There was a thread somewhere in one of the other forums about your top 10 Fleetwood Mac tracks, but what about the rest of the music on your iTunes/iPod?

Now mine might be a bit weird - partly because of my musical taste and partly because I have only changed over to iTunes from Media Player in the past few months after my wife received an iPod for her birthday back in October (and I received one for Xmas).

These are currently my top 10 most played songs according to iTunes

Heavy Cross - Gossip
My! My! Honeycomb - Bonnie Tyler
The Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys - Jim Capaldi with Dave Mason
One Sided Love - Fleetwood Mac
By The Sun - Idle Race (Dave Walker)
Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez
Mohammed's Radio - Warren Zevon
Stay Down in New Orleans - Bekka Bramlett
Early Morning Come - Fleetwood Mac
Trinity - Fleetwood Mac

Do you use itunes? I enabled the Play Count column in itunes (it was hidden, right click on any column to select which columns you want to see). I can also see the most played on my ipod if I go to Music / Playlist /Top 25 Most played.

My two top 25 lists are different (I don't sync my ipod with itunes).

My father is a huge Joan Baez fan, and as I said to him the other day, for a Joan Baez song it is actually pretty good

The one I like is from the 40,000 Headmen tour (Jim and Dave). To my mind it is a much better song than the original Traffic version.

Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez

I get a professional massage bi-weekly and he comes to my house. Each time I play a different set of oldies. This was on last weeks list. I've heard this track thousands of times but this was the first time I said to myself, "she's trying too hard to sound like Bob Dylan." Trying to rush those words into each phrasing ending.

Could be intentional. It's blatantly about Dylan.

Diamonds and Rust? Nooo. Dylan called Joan from the famous "booth in the Midwest" to read, I think, the lyrics of another song to her. After the call, and the emotions it brought up, she wrote Diamonds and Rust about their relationship and the feelings she still had for him.

"Diamonds & Rust" is a 1975 song written and performed by Joan Baez. In the song, Baez recounts an out-of-the-blue phone call from an old lover, which sends her a decade back in time, to a seedy hotel in Greenwich Village. She recalls giving him a pair of cuff links, and summarizes that memories bring "diamonds and rust" (time both turns dirty charcoal into beautiful diamonds and shiny metal into ugly rust).

The song, which was a top-forty hit for Baez on the U.S. pop singles chart, is regarded by a number of critics, as well as by Baez fans, as one of her best compositions. It served as the title song on Baez's gold-selling Diamonds & Rust album in 1975.

For her 1995 live recording Ring Them Bells, Baez performed the song as a duet with Mary Chapin Carpenter. In that performance, she changed the end lines: "And if you're / offering me diamonds and rust / I've already paid," to: "And if you... well I'll take the diamonds." And also : "I bought you some cuff links, you brought me something" turned out to be "I bought you some cuff links, you brought me troubles" And on 25 February 2009, in Austin, she sang it, "And if you... well I'll take the Grammy."

[edit] About Bob Dylan?
It is often said [1] that the song describes Baez's relationship with Bob Dylan, ten years prior. In Baez's memoir, And a Voice to Sing With, she recounted how she told Dylan that the song was actually about her husband David Harris, thereby countering the claim that the song was about Dylan and Baez. Although Dylan is not specifically named in the song, Baez has admitted in her memoir as well as in a number of interviews that he is the inspiration for the song.

The following excerpt shows Baez's rendition of this conversation between her and Dylan:

"You gonna sing that song about robin's eggs and diamonds?" Bob had asked me on the first day of rehearsals.
"Which one?"
"You know, that one about blue eyes and diamonds..."
"Oh", I said, "you must mean 'Diamonds And Rust', the song I wrote for my husband, David. I wrote it while he was in prison."
"For your husband?" Bob said.
"Yeah. Who did you think it was about?" I stonewalled.
"Oh, hey, what the f*** do I know?"
"Never mind. Yeah, I'll sing it, if you like."

- Joan Baez, And a Voice to Sing With (1987)

In an interview [2] with music writer Mike Ragogna, Joan admitted that the character in the song is Dylan:

MR: "Diamonds And Rust" was another magic moment. You've said when you began writing the song, it started as something else until Dylan phoned you. Then it became about him. That must have been one helluva call.
JB: He read me the entire lyrics to "Lily, Rosemary, And The Jack Of Hearts" that he'd just finished from a phone booth in the Midwest.
MR: What was the song about originally?
JB: I don't remember what I'd been writing about, but it had nothing to do with what it ended up as.

I don't think I've heard that version. I will have to track it down.

I inherited the original Traffic album on vinyl from my mother back in the day, and it was one of the ones I played to death before it got ruined in a flood.

Man, I miss those records.

She had a lot of awesome stuff and I treasured all of it. I remember sitting on the floor after the flood with a hair dryer, sobbing and trying desperately to salvage what I could.

That must have been a long phone call. Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts is nearly a 9 minute song (and his misses out a verse).

Certainly one of my favourite Dylan songs too...

Billie Jean to me is one of those movies you can watch a million times and never get tired of and each time I watch it it's like seeing it again for the first time. It never gets old to me. And whenever I hear Rebel Yell, I so wanna run through a mall while being chased and drop a bag of marbles everywhere.

There's not much variety to mine:

1. "Treason' - Lindsey Buckingham
2. "Underground" - Lindsey Buckingham
3. "D.W. Suite" - Lindsey Buckingham
4. "How I Could Just Kill A Man" - Charlotte Sometimes (I'm a bit suprised by this one)
5. "Time Precious Time" - Lindsey Buckingham
6. "Monday Morning" - Fleetwood Mac
7. "The Right Place to Fade" - Lindsey Buckingham
8. "Without A Leg To Stand On" - Buckingham Nicks
9. "Don't Let Me Down Again" - Buckingham Nicks
10. "What's The World Coming To" - Fleetwood Mac

Hmm...

For the record, LB's not my favorite artist. Tom Petty is, but I guess I listen to more of a variety of Petty songs (and there are a lot more Petty songs than LB songs to listen to) so there isn't any one particular song that would show up here.

That actually makes a lot of sense, considering I have like hundreds of Tom Petty songs myself and almost all are so freaking consistently great that I want to hear them all and can't really decide on a favorite because I love way too many. Whereas with LB, I have definite loves (and not-so-loves). But TP trumps Lindsey in the output department, no question.

Yeah Petty is pretty consistent. Actually there are only two of his that I don't like - "Joe" from The Last DJ and "Jammin' Me" from Let Me Up (I've Had Enough). Some artists are consistent like that though...
