I live in NJ but just on the other side of the Hudson River about 2 miles south of the GW Bridge. Not exactly NY, I know.

A wonderful, small, apple-orchard laden town by the name of Marlboro. Howdy neighbor!
Have you done the walkway bridge yet? I was there opening day. Glad I'm not the only Ledgie here in the HV!

Wow, that's close! Right now I'm actually living in Fishkill/Beacon because there was a fire in my co-op last year. Will be moving back at the end of the month. Didn't get a chance to do the walkway bridge yet. I see people walking on it now, but I'll wait till it's warm out! How was it?

Oh no. Hope you didn't lose any stuff. Beacon has really become a nice little town lately. I remember when it was in pretty rough shape years ago.
Anyway, was only on the walkway bridge once. It was definately very cool and worth checking out.
I used to live in Brentwood (LI) back in '79-81. Pretty sure that's a not-so-good area these days.
I remember the old Edgewood Hospital located in nearby Deer Park. I think it was originally an offshoot of Pilgrim State way back when. Anyway, the building was vacant and stood in the middle of a huge field. Gave me the heebie jeebies just lookin at it way in the distance from whatever highway in Commack or Deer Park. And, then there was Pilgrim State. There were rumours back then that they used to let some of the patients walk around. We, as tweens, thought we saw some walking down our street and used to tease each other and run and hide if we saw them coming. It was actually pretty fun!
Here's a pic of that old Edgewood Hospital if any of you are old enough to remember. It was levelled in 1989.

Thank you for reminding me about Edgewood. I grew up not too far away (in Holbrook), and I clearly remember seeing this building on multiple occasions. In retrospect, it was probably the precursor that led to my fascination of urban ruins (especially those large and/or ornate). I'm thankful that I got to see Coney Island & Asbury Park, NJ around the same time (mid-late '80's) before they started to turn.

I used to wander around Pilgrim, back before they knocked a lot of the smaller buildings. I had t a mental movie playing in my head of what it was like in the 1930's, 40's and 50's when 10,000 patients were housed there. Edgewood was knocked down before I ever had the chance to explore it, though I definitely do remember seeing it in the distance and always thought how spooky it looked.
I spent the most time at Kings Park, and used to 'find my way' into the abandoned buildings to look around. I guess I was hoping to find the lobotomy chamber, lol.
They are amazing, amazing places. And so unique that Long Island had FOUR huge state psychiatric facilities.

I went to Marist in Poughkeepsie and the huge abandoned psychiatric hospital across from campus (maybe the Mid-Hudson?) is pretty creeptastic now too. I remember the school was considering purchasing the building/property around the time I was there, which really would be very convenient but if they had turned it into dorms? Whoa.

Wow. I didn't think anyone here would've been familiar with that place. I was never brave enough to go wandering around those places. Now, I would. I loved horror movies back when i was a kid so these places were the perfect things to get creeped out by.
Someone else posted about a place near Marist in Pok. Am gonna go have to check it out...

If you haven't already, you should also check out Bannerman's Castle. Part of the tower collapsed a few weeks ago. Sad to think that something unique to the area like that will be completely gone one day. They give tours of the island from May through October, so if you have a chance and haven't already you should check it out.
