I have one version of this song, sounds like a demo labelled Outtake 1. This makes me think there are other versions, maybe with better quality.

I love this song, would like to see if anyone has it in any other forms?

Thanks!

Or alternate versions of Joan of Arc, for that matter? Both really great, dark songs.

I've only heard one Joan of Arc, if there are alternates around I'd love to hear them too. I think it's her most intense song.

In my mind, I hear Tango-recording era FM. I am imaging Lindsey just going nuts making all kinds of weird, ghostly sounds in the studio and playing and recording all the parts himself. But I'm probably wrong, Mike Bise probably knows the whole story of Joan of Arc. I created my own myth about Joan of Arc being about Betty Ford, it would be disappointing if it turns out Stevie wrote it in 1973, LOL!

Thanks, I'll check out that ATBW. As for Joan of Arc, it was definitely recorded for Tango, and there are two versions at least. They're both on youtube.

And definitely, her most intense song. I think it's also her most desperate. Not much to it besides pain. I imagine Stevie recorded it coked out of her mind, it's just raw emotion, it's not like the others, very stripped down.

In short it kicks ass.

yup. That's exactly how I feel, it can just knock you over with how dementedly sad and fragile she sounds on this track.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I heard ATBW on buckinghamnicks.net today and was reminded of what an amazingly powerful song it is. One of my top 3 outtakes. How could this have not made an album solo or FM? Even if there's a 1% chance she will ever release this song it won't be the same voice as this and that truly saddens me :(. Well I feel I need a little sympathy .
I also agree it sounds like TINT era. If you haven't heard this song listen to it immediately! I've never really given thought as to what it's about. Will have to think hard and get back to you.

Just some nobody.

"Joan of Arc" is pre-Betty Ford. I have three completely different recordings, all from Early 1986. Maureen Loftus was the first person to leak the Tango outtake version, and it was given to her as a batch of Tango outtakes.

The other two I have are simpler demos, but Stevie's voice is even better than on the Tango version.

As I wrote extensively about in the "Julia" thread, "All The Beautiful Worlds" is a fully-recorded outtake from The Wild Heart, recorded here in Dallas in 1982. I interviewed my fellow Dallasite Gordon Perry about this song in 1996. He produced "All The Beautiful Worlds", "Julia", "Gate and Garden", "Destiny" and "Wild Heart" here in Dallas, but Iovine was the Executive Producer for The Wild Heart and decided which songs made it on the album. Gordon's two favourite songs are "Julia" and "All The Beautiful Worlds" and was shocked when Jimmy cut them from the disc.

I have "two" versions of "All The Beautiful Worlds", but they are the same. I recently got a perfect Master-quality copy.

So there are 2 different recordings of ATBW? One during TWH era and one from the TINT outtakes? Can you please post the master quality copy you have? This song means the world to me. That Jimmy Iovine made a huge mistake but cutting it . This song could have been a great part of Stevie's legacy.

No, only one "All The Beautiful Worlds", and that's from The Wild Heart, recorded here in Dallas in 1982.

I was referencing "Joan of Arc" that someone else mentioned, that's why Tango was referred to.

I hope to post my Master-level quality recording of "All The Beautiful Worlds" very soon when I move and have new high-speed Internet.

For years I only heard the version of ALL THE BEAUTIFUL WORLDS on the "Demos & Outtakes" CDs that Anne Strikwerda used to sell many years ago overseas. Most of the demos on these CDs were terrible quality. Most cassette players were slightly different speeds and when people dubbed these demos from a tape recorded on one player to another player - there were lots of variances.

The versions I've heard online and on the "Demos & Outtakes" CDs were slightly lower and slower than the Master Sessions version that finally surfaced online. BUT, I feel the Masters Sessions I have MAY have been transferred from a cassette itself and NOT master tapes like many other songs have been. There's some tape hiss/noise on there that is not on other Masters I've heard like DIAL THE NUMBER. Because of this, the older less quality ALL THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD's may have been the correct pitch and speed. I actually lowered the Masters version to the pitch and speed of the version I've listened to for years and I swear it sounds more RIGHT than leaving it unchanged. Normally I would say it's just because I've heard it so long in that key. But I swear there's just something not right about Stevie's voice in that version, just like in PRETTIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD, which I feel is probably in the wrong key on the "Demos & Outtakes" CDs. Anyone else ever notice this?

Thanks for sharing. I never really paid much attention to this song because of the quality of the demo I had, but since I've heard better quality versions from this thread, I've grown to love it.

Stviebilly (as astute as always) noticed the other day that the song shares lyrics with You Won't Forget Me (from the Buckingham Nicks days.)

And here is the master quality version paleshadow posted, but I have changed the key and tempo to match the version that circulated for years. I still swear it sounds more correct. Compare the two - listen at Stevie's vibratto. It's too fast in the unaltered version. I still believe this mp3, which says it's from a 01/02/86 Master Compilation Reel, is transferred from a cassette. There's more tape hiss than other Master Reel recordings I've heard. The other Master Reel mp3s also do not say COMPILATION REEL. You decide.

After hearing the one paleshoadow posted it's hard to listen to this one with inferior quality. But, I still like it much better in the higher pitch/speed/key. It's too slow IMO but it could be because I'm just used to the other one.

I've changed my mind. This one is better! She sounds a little too mickey mouseie in paleshadow's version compared to this although I do like them both.
Now the questions is - are there 2 different time periods she recorded this? Only one in 1982 like MikeBise said or 1982 and 1986 like yours is labeled? I'm totally confused.

Grinnygog
03-14-2010, 11:01 AM
EXACTLY! Here we have this "masters compilation reel" studio quality version released, but it has lesser quality sound than the other "masters" I've heard. AND the date is listed as 1986, but the song was supposed to be 1982. SO - I really believe this "masters compilation reel" source is a cassette copy of the master (or who knows, it could be a copy of a copy) and the speed & pitch are incorrect. I think the slower tempo and lower key is correct. I'm glad to see others agree. I really wish Stevie would release some of these great outtakes - she has enough to fill a boxset!!!

Does anyone know the source of all these "masters" that have surfaced last decade? I once read that someone found them in a warehouse - but who IS this person and how can we get actually CD copies or download the full .wavs versus all the inferior compressed mp3s that have surfaced of these for the last decade? I know there was a torrent website awhile back dedicated to sharing Stevie rarities in full quality - is it still around?

The "masters" I've heard are great. DIAL THE NUMBER is phenomenal. I remember a song titled LILY GIRL was also from those sessions. And someone apparantly has SMILE AT YOU Fleetwood Mac masters because they released various mixes of the vocals and such.

The person who got the Master Reels (actual reel-to-reels, old school stuff, kiddos!) sold them to a group of Stevie Fans who paid for studio time to have the Reels "baked" (a studio term for processing and transferring), mixed, mastered and put on CD. This was very, very expensive, and took 3 years to complete.

"All The Beautiful Worlds" is not from those Master Reels that were transferred in 2002-2005. It came from elsewhere.

But it was only fully-recorded once, here in Dallas, in 1982, produced by Gordon Perry, who personally told me all about it in 1996. It's not from 1986.

What does it involve to have songs mixed and mastered to improve the quality? I ask because I know someone who has access to all of the latest studio equipment and programs and there's a good chance I could get him to work on some Stevie stuff for us. Is there copyright issues involved? Do you need permission to make changes to the tracks and make them public?

mikebise
03-14-2010, 11:56 AM
Yeah, it is illegal, of course.

Anyway, the process isn't taking CDs or normal cassettes and making them sound better. These Reels sound perfect on ancient reel-to-reel players, the kind you can see working when Stevie's recording "Angel" in the studio.

None of us have these at home. Making copies required a very intricate studio process (called "baking") and mixing and mastering for optimum sound. Yes, mixing was involved on some tracks. The "a capaella" and "stripped down" versions you might see here and there were not on the Masters; they were achieved in the studio, taking off the various instruments. That's how MOST of the many Stevie dance remixes made by fans were able to be done, stripping things down to just Stevie & the girls so that dance music could be added to them.

All distribution of Stevie's unreleased songs is illegal without her permission. Same as making a burned CD copy of Trouble in Shangri-la and giving it to a friend.

Studio time on the Master Reels was to transfer the delicate, fragile tape of the reels.

I read your question wrong, sorry! Things can be done with studio equipment to improve the sound quality of some demos, yes indeed. I've heard some studio-improved versions of "Beautiful Ghost" and "Thousand Days" that are huge improvements. Other attempts, like "What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You?" do not sound much better to my old ears.

But it is possible and definitely worth trying if your friend has access!!! Go for it!! :)

i've always thought that "child-like" could refer to somebody being naive or fragile, like a child. He's a "victim" because he's been caught up in this whole mess of cheating on Stevie with another woman, though it may not have been his fault. He may have been so naive and innocent that he was seduced and now Stevie is saying that he should be loving her, instead of this other woman.

i absolutely agree! The whole concept of "Welcome to the room...Sara" is "Welcome to Reality...Stevie". Now she must control her life. Just some background: there are many parallels to "Gone With The Wind". Tara is the mansion in Gone with the Wind ("it's not home, and it's not Tara"), meaning that Betty Ford is not luxurious at all, and it's not like home. "Scarlett" was a main character in the story, and, in typical Stevie fashion, she uses her as another character for herself.

Also, Stevie checked into Betty Ford as "SARA Anderson", her married last name and her best friend's name.

"Oooh
Missionary
Well, I will be different
When I get back
And you can take all of the credit"

she is saying that when she gets out of Betty Ford, she will be coke-free and that the people at Betty Ford (missionary-like people) can "take all of the credit" for it.

Stevie then says, blatantly, that "of course it was a problem" that she was so heavily on coke.

so, all in all, yes it of course is all about Betty Ford.

Well, the lyrics are also very angry in parts. Stevie spits at Frontline Management, the ones who "forced" her into rehab, "Frontline baby, well, you held her prisoner..."

"Affairs of The Heart" has Stevie describing the colours of the doors, "One set of doors was the colour of honey, one set of doors was pink and grey... Well, I wonder which set of rooms are mine, said she, as she walked down the long hallway... Well, I wonder which set of rooms are mine?"

The OSOTM demo has some extra lyrics:

"Well, I wonder which set of rooms are mine
And I wonder who waits inside...
It's my choice now to choose between
In these rooms she would live and die..."

Yes, it is, as is "Affairs of The Heart".

Wow, this gives the song a new perspective for me. I never considered it was written about her Betty Ford experience. I always thought it was widely known that "Welcome to the room...Sara" was. Especially with the bitter line she throws at her former management "Frontline", who she fired..."when you hang up that phone, you cease to exist" Yikes!!

But I always felt knowing the experience/message Stevie was writing about in WTTRS, that the musical arrangement should have been a bit darker...ala "Joan of Arc" but in a mid-tempo range. However, Lindsey arranged it to fit in with the upbeat feeling of the rest of the songs on "Tango"...and that is why I feel a disconnect with this song, And probably why most fans do not connect with this song as well. Goes to show you how important it is to have the right producer for a song.

And now that I know "Affairs of the Heart" was written about this experience as well ( it makes sense upon reflecting on the lyrics), this song also comes across incredibly chirpy! However, I have a problem with the production on "Behind The Mask" overall. The whole production lacks something.... sounds tinny w. too much treble, lost in a sonic vacuum. Where is the rich rhythm section that FM is famous for to flesh out the bottom range?? Stevie's songs especially fall victim to this production, her voice seems to be mixed low and in an echo chamber. Oh well, I digress.....just venting.

mikebise

There are three alternate mixes of the BTM version of "Affairs of The Heart" which sound better, IMO. I also prefer the OSOTM demo than the official version.

Still, I like the up tempo sound to the song. And I think it actually gets kinda sad at the end, the final time Stevie sings:

"Well, I knew that this was just for now,
And that time would take its toll upon us all...
Well, it would break our hearts...
Tear us apart!
But NO ONE understood
The affairs of the heart... OOH!!!"

I just love that song!

SapphireSister

IMO BTM is Fleetwood Mac's equivalent of Street Angel (although I much prefer Street Angel). There are really no songs on there that I love and even Stevie's songs are mediocre at best. Not feeling the whole Billy Burnette/Rick Vito thing. That's just not Fleetwood Mac to me.

Whoa, there is a OSOTM demo of AOTH out there!? I would love to hear that....nudge, nudge.. wink wink.

I have heard at least one or two alt. mixes of the BTM version, and agree they are better. But it still seems to me that the production on this song is lacking some bass. Stevie is definitely singing her heart out in the second half of the song, just wish they mixed her vocal more prominently and the harmony louder.

I love this song too, and think it is underrated. I love it even more now that I know it's inspiration...Thanks for shedding the light on this. Those lyrics take on a more literal punch for me now!

It's from a reel titled 'Master Reel Compilation Dated 1/20/86'. You are right, it was not one of the reels from eBay.

Stevie talks a lot about how she made demo tapes for various friends - I've always thought this might be one of those. Another possibility is that this was a compilation of demos she took in to the Tango sessions for consideration, but I'm not sure the timing is right for that.

Guys please let me know when you listen to it on the master reels. I don't have time to dl them all right now but I'd really like to know how this song was meant to be and that should tell us, right?
