It sounds like Stevie is listening to the playback of the track, demands her piano and gets it overdubbed on, and then starts over-dubbing her own vocals.

Anyway, I love this version, with Stevie's on-fire vocals and the "sparkling" piano!

Rock a little,
Mike

Fascinating little outtake... thanks for sharing! "If You Were My Love" has always been one of my favorite unreleased Stevie songs. I hate it never made it on one of her or the Mac's albums. So much passion... this song could have made for one hell of a live performance back in Stevie's coked out glory days! :woohoo:

It does ~ as she's wailing away and dancing to it on her Rolling Stone photo shoot!!! :]

It's almost like having an actual video for "If You Were My Love"!

It's one of my favorites too. It has such a cool vibe to it, and would have been a great Fleetwood Mac track. There were so many recording attempts with this song, both with the band and solo. Obviously she saw its potential, and given all the time and effort to realize it, you think that she would have revisited it somewhere down the road. There are many songs that she was hyped about, yet they never saw the light of day. I remember when Rolling Stone wrote about her impending album 'The Other Side of the Mirror,' they mentioned the tracks 'Don't Treat Me Like a Stranger' and...memory loss...but they didn't even get released as as b-sides. What others do you like? 'Something Exquisite' is another favorite of mine.

That interview mentioned "Don't Treat Me Like A Stranger", "Dial The Number" and "Tragedy of One's Own Soul". All three are incredible songs and would have added greatly to The Other Side of The Mirror.

I was always haunted by the Bay Area Music interview from November 1981 when Stevie was talking about her finished songs for the upcoming Mirage: "If You Were My Love", "That's Alright", and "Smile At You", although she thought that "Smile At You" might be replaced because when she first wrote and recorded it, she was very angry, and she wasn't any longer. Really, Stevie??? "My heart... My heart was BROKEN!!!"

No anger there! :p

I love the Bella Donna and Mirage versions of "If You Were My Love", but I remain in the minority with the Street Angel outtake being my favourite. Yes, the fire and anger of the earlier versions is exciting, but the looking-back-wistfulness of the Street Angel version just breaks my heart. Just my feelings...

"Now, now if I were the one who watched over your sleeping, you would never have been frightened at all... at all..."

Is the SA version the one with the slow country style vibe?

I think some called it the "bossa nova" or "tropical" version. That is, assuming there is only one SA version. But perhaps you're referring to the pedal steel that is featured prominently, which I guess lends it a bit of a country vibe as well  . It's an interesting take on the song but comes nowhere close to the original Mirage take. Speaking of the Mirage version, does anyone have a high(er)-quality version of IYWML playing in the background at the Rolling Stone photo shoot? That version is definitely different from the other versions I have heard/downloaded over the years...

Yes, John, and it's directly from the studio Master of the original, completed, finished-and-turned-in Street Angel from February 1993.

I love how the piano clinks away at the end when Stevie & The 3 Girls sing at the end:

"They say everyone... everyone... must remain... faithful..."

This version sort of reminds me of something Norah Jones would do in a few years in that first big album of hers

The RS photo session is epic. Not only does a killer version of IYWML play in the background; but Stevie sings along to it as the camera snaps away. Her voice was so good then it makes me weep.

Wird on that bird! I also love it when she sings along to "Gold Dust Woman." I don't know if it was the drugs or what... but the woman was fearless back in the day. It seemed like she would sing to anyone willing to listen.

Can someone post all versions of the song? It's a song that has had quite a journey over time, yet never having been released!

Wow, what a vocal on this. Love it.
I'd only previously heard the 'Street Angel' session of it, and it left me cold, didn't like it a bit, mostly the 'tropico' musical setting to it was what I found really bad, I thought it dragged and sounded like a long tv commercial for an air-freshener. But this Mirage out-take, what a voice on her.
Recently, I read that there is an alternate version (said to be better than the released version) of 'Listen To The Rain' recorded 3 years earlier, in 1991. Would anybody be willing to share it? I always liked the Street Angel version of it, and felt it had a lot of potential beyond what we heard on 'Street Angel'. Is this rare, earlier 'Listen To The Rain' widely known, or has it been widely heard?
Pre-Ledge, a long long time ago, I bought this 4cd set called 'Enchanted Dreams'- I remember it was $60, and all over the cds there's 'Much Love, Robin' written by the gal I got the cds from. How she missed this version of 'If You Were My Love' and an alternate 'Listen to the Rain' seems odd. Wonder if she ever became a Ledgie. Wonder if she resented Ledgies sharing for free what she sold!
I do have to say, after about 4 purchases from her, she agreed to alter one of her cds and, per my request, opened the cd with 'At Last' which she warned me repeatedly she didn't think I'd like. It was mad-love at first listen. She also sent me a cpl. refrigerator magnets as bonuses.
Well, anyway, thanks for sharing this version of 'If You Were My Love'... Might we all be able to listen to 'Listen To The Rain' next? I searched YouTube and didn't see anything.

Listen To The Rain was a widely circulated demo. Lots of us have it. It is wayyyyyyyyy better than the album version as are MOST of Stevie's songs. I've always said that she spends thousands of dollars to go into the studio to destroy her songs.
As for the lady who sells these demos. She should be shot. It's because people like her that artists get pissed off. Nobody should have to pay for these songs. Plenty of fans will gladly post them if you ask.

It was a long time ago, probably '98 or '99. I doubt she's still selling them. She must have been an eBay seller, it definitely wasn't any Stevie or Mac site that I bought them from. I bought them, my choice, I don't think she shoulda been shot :) The sound quality was dreadful on a lot of the songs on 'Enchanted Dreams', but 'China Doll' and 'Smile At You' were awesome and I found '24 Karat Gold' very trancey in it's own way.

"Listen To The Rain" was fully recorded, mixed and mastered in the studio in 1991 to be the first single from TimeSpace. "Listen To The Rain"/"Desert Angel" even had its own official listing number from Atlantic as a single.

However, apparently "Listen To The Rain" didn't quite achieve what Atlantic wanted at the time, trying to shoe-horn Stevie into the hair bands sound, so it got shelved, and Stevie was forced to do the Poison/Bon Jovi songs.

"Listen To The Rain" was leaked almost immediately in 1991 after recorded in the studio.

Sure you're not thinking of "Love Is Like A River"?

That demo is from Rock A Little.

The lyrics are Stevie's, but the music to "Listen To The Rain" is written by the band Venice, and Stevie didn't meet those guys until 1989. Also, the government copyright for the lyrics is 1991.

You're probably right about "Love is like a river"...that might have been it. Thanks!!

Now I really want to hear the 1991 version of LTTR!!! :)

That's funny. Cause I also have a demo of Love Is Like A River labeled as RAL. But I guess it was labeled wrong all this time? I'm not sure what era this is from now. :distress:

This is taken from the Street Angel wiki page:

Nicks has tended to look upon the album's lack of success as a result of her dependency on Klonopin, and, due to the resultant onset of writer's block from which she suffered until 1995, most of the songs used were outtakes from previous solo albums. "Greta," "Love Is Like a River", and "Listen to the Rain" date back to the Rock A Little era.

Now I'm really confused.

mikebise

Stevie did not meet the members of Venice until 1989. They wrote the music for "Listen To The Rain".

I've never possessed or heard a demo of "Listen To The Rain" from the Rock A Little era. It was not copyrighted until 1991, and Stevie turns in songs/lyrics/poetry immediately upon writing them, after the "Sara" fiasco.

Street Angel songs actually from the Rock A Little era are "I Call You Missing", "Greta", "Thousand Days" and "Love Is Like A River".

Of course, I'm most likely completely wrong about this. All apologies. Not trying to be snarky.

I don't mean to change the subject but THIS is the best version of If You Were My Love. I wish I had a better copy of it.
