I thought this would be a really fun cool thread to start modeled on one of my favorite tv shows of all time. So here's the concept. Think of some cool funky really good places to eat wherever you are from. Maybe when I or other ledgies come to your city we might partake in one of the establishments reccomended. There are no real limitations on this list. The resturants cam be expensive or cheap, as long as you find the food to be exceptional and the ambiance good too. I'll start off with some in the Minneapolis-St Paul area that I really enjoy.

Boca Chica: This is a resturant in St Paul's hispanic neighborhood that has been rated the #1 Mexican resturant in the Twin Cities for almost 30 years. They make a F**KIN KILLER Enchilada Suiza.

The Nook: This is one of those hole in the wall places that was actually featured on the real Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and they are known for theier AMAZING hamburgers. You wanna talk about a heart attack on a plate, this is the place for you. My favorite item on the menu is a Nookie supreme a double burger with Thousand Island dressing, Lettuce, Tomatoes, and whatever else you might want. The meat is of course alwaysf resh never frozen here. It is right next to Cretin-Derham hall highschool in St Paul

Emily's Lebanese Deli: A true gem on Minneapolis' northeast side that has been a staple of the Neighborhood for almost 40 years. my reccomendations here are the Meat Pies and Stuffed Grape leaves MMMMMMMM:nod:

Stella's Fish Cafe: this is moer of an upscale place in Minneapolis Uptown area near the corner of Lake street and Hennepin Avenue. my favorite dish here is an item called Scallops benedict. Sea Scallops, which I have to confess are my favorite food on the face of this earth, are placed on top of small pieces of Brioche bread and aplle smoked bacon and topped with Hollandaise sauce. The only way I can describe this dish is beyond heavenly.

Ok there's a few from my area. Lets hear of some from where my fellow Ledgies are.

If anyone is ever in Pittsburgh, you need to check out an Eat N Park. Don't worry, you won't have to drive more than five minutes to run into one wherever you are. It's basically a Denny's, but with much better food, and, of course, the famous smiley cookie.

If you want real authentic Buffalo Wings, Anchor Bar is where the tourists go because they "invented" them. They're OK I hear (never been there - like I said, it's for tourists.) But locals usually go to Duff's or order takeout from LaNova.

Also worth mentioning are Milton's in Cheektowaga or Pete & Paul's in South Buffalo for their homemade pita wraps. Delicious. I highly recommend the chicken philly.

In Evansville, we have a place called the Hilltop Inn. I think Alton Brown from the Food Network did a thing on it before. It was also recently voted the "Manliest Restaurant in America"....I don't know what that says about me loving to eat there, but I'll move on...

they have the BEST fried chicken livers...EVER.
they also have burgoo, brain sandwiches, fried chicken, dumplings, etc.

so friggin' good.

In little ole' Athens, Tennessee there is a great pizza place called The Gondolier. It's right across the street from my high school.

Best Mexican food in Orlando, Florida... Maria Bonitas.

Oh, & favorite places to eat in Wellington... Indus (Curry place), Monsoon Poon, and Flying Burrito Brothers ;)

I love watching Triple 'D' its such a fun show to watch. I did get to go to one of the resturants in LV last yr that was on the program. It was ok. The 3 Kegs. We had there stromboli that Guy had also. It is a really small place though. They had a board on the wall of the whole world and all these pins were people have come from all over the world to visit this place. Theres tons of places on that show I wish I could visit. Really its all a matter of taste....sometimes you love it sometimes you don't. Theres another place that the show Man Vs Food went to in LV that I hope to visit also....another one that has way too much food....anyway, just some thoughts......:D

If you ever get to my neck of the woods and you're a meat eater (Hello, if you eat BRAINS, you probably eat MEAT :p) you can find some great barbecue. And that's a noun, not an adjective.

For the best vegetarian fare around, Boba House in downtown Greensboro is amazing.

Falafel's Drive-In in San Jose is amazing. It's been on the Food Network and a bunch of other random shows. It's been around since the 50s and feels like it-- neon light-up signs, the full deal. The best $7.50 you can ever spend: large falafel sandwich and a banana shake, their famous special.

Also in San Jose/suburbs:
Straits (http://www.straitsrestaurants.com/index.php?section=13): I usually go to the Santana Row location. I seriously think that you can order anything off of this menu and leave super happy.
Dio Deka (http://www.diodeka.com): awesome Greek food in my home town. :)

In San Francisco, EVERYWHERE is good. But if you want some awesome Cuban food and a fantastic atmosphere, go to Cha Cha Cha. Their fried plantains are magic. But expect a RIDICULOUS wait at either location (even on any given weekday-- I was there tonight and the wait was an hour and a half for a table for two when we walked in at 8) so reservations are a must. So delicious.

I drove by the Buffalo Bew Pub last night & realized that I was remiss in leaving it off my list. :( Then I see that Cammie yelled at me for it. So yes, great wings as well as burgers & sandwiches & salads & stuff. It's in the 'burbs, in Williamsville/Amherst area.

Also, Seabar downtown for great Asian fusion/sushi place.

Thai food? Saigon Bangkok or Thai Orchid Cafe.

Steakhouse? Fiamma. Hands down.

Burgers? Grover's, a littel dive bar/restaurant that was just recently featured on some Food Network show, can't recalll which.

I don't know why I'm listing so many, it's not like anyone visits Buffalo unless they have family here or they are coming in for a show or sporting event.

The ambiance sucks, the people there are rednecks, but damn I love me some Mann's Grill. This place is a **** hole if I've ever seen one, but the portions are huge and they serve everything that screams mamma's cookin'. Turkey Manhattans are awesome. I love their omlettes. They have to use 5 eggs and a pound of bacon.

And Grey's Cafeteria. Now, I absolutely hate cafeterias, but this place has a line all the way out the door, and sometimes, halfway wrapped outside. Every.Damn.Night. Best food ever.

Is Grey's the one in Mooresville? I think so, anyway. They opened one down here, 5-6 years ago. It only lasted about 2 years, though. I remember hearing that their rent was astronomical.
I never ate there....I'm not much on "home cooking". While I like it, my food dollars almost always go to Mexican, Chinese, or steakhouses(love me some Texas Roadhouse).

I wouldn't call Cha Cha Cha a Cuban restaurant, but more Caribbean style food. Their Sangria puts Spain to shame. Their Jamaican Jerk Chicken rules my world.

Also, the Haight Street location (original location) does not take reservations at all. Get drunk and wait. It's all about the experience, rather than the food at Cha Cha Cha's in the Haight-Ashbury district.

Yeah, the one in Mooresville. They make tons of money! I don't know how they couldn't afford the rent. It's family owned, and I know a niece of the owners. They make good money there for what they do.

Have you been on that stretch of Haight anytime in the last 6-8 months? It used to be just incredibly f'ing annoying- its now legitimately unnerving. A new crowd has moved in and taken over the sidewalks, literally pushing people (including tourists) around.

Eat n' Park smiley cookies FTW! One time I moved away from PA and had no access to smiley cookies and it was just SAD. And WRONG. Fortunately, I moved back and can now eat them with abandon again.

I also enjoy a good Frownie from King's (more for the Frownie's attitude than its taste, true, but nonetheless) as well as their cheesy hashbrown casserole. Drool.

If you are ever in Oil City, PA (I can't think of a reason why you WOULD be there, but if it happens somehow), then you need to go to this hole in the wall place called Tobey's. Do not order their pizza, as I think it is made of cardboard, but do absolutely order their hot ham and cheese sub, because THAT, my friends, is made of sunshine, rainbows and a f*ck ton of mayo. Their wedgies are also delicious.

If you ever find yourself in Youngstown, OH, get yourself immediately to Antone's. It has a drive-thru, but do not let this deter you. This place has some of the best marinara sauce I have EVER had in my life. And not only do they make a lovely eggplant or chicken parm, they make a FRIED CHEESE parm - as in, they will put delicious, gooey mozzarella cheese in where the eggplant or chicken should be, and you will die from love and hardened arteries. Deep in the middle of the night, Antone's, I think about you. Indeed, I know what it smells like.

Good idea for a thread - food is love, especially good food in unexpected places.

Carrie is right. One should never go to Youngstown on purpose. But sometimes one finds oneself traveling through Youngstown while en route to somewhere else. In such a case, it is acceptable to make a brief stop for amazing pasta.

the reason i no longer aspire to fun is because it almost got me killed. hence the "or worse" part.

stopping by a vacant field, picking up stalks of wheat and the roots beating on the side of carrie's mother's car would fall under "trouble". getting the chicken pattie sandwich at bob evans would be "trouble". getting a letter from my neighbor discussing his critter trap adventures is "trouble". getting blocked in a parking lot by a 60 y/o mafia leader for sure falls under "or worse". yeah. i'm certain of it.

but walking up and getting 3rd row center at the stevie concert is fun. and sliding into 2end row is even more fun!

A Tale Of Two Cities:

In Sunset Beach, California...Harbor House Cafe' (open 24/7) on Pacific Coast Highway....great food...specializes in breakfasts, but they have great food for ANY time of day. (second location down PCH about 25 miles in Dana Point)

Sushi "Hog Trough": Todai Japanese Buffet Restaurant (many locations around the US, but my fave location is in Orange, CA)...like sushi? This is the place where "quantity & quality" meet. You'll definitely be in some "overstuffed pain" upon leaving...but it's a GOOD "overstuffed pain".

In Denver, Colorado....Annie's Cafe (on Colfax). Just moved to a new & larger location after 50 years at their previous spot. New digs keep the "funky" vibe in a larger, more modern setting. Parking is still a bitch, though. The menu takes about an hour to decide from, so many choices.

For dinner, there's "The Affordable French Restaurant"....Le' Central on 8th & Lincoln. Great food, great service, great atmosphere, more than reasonable prices. (gets busy out of the blue, so reservations are a good thing to have)

if anyone is ever..in..erm...henderson kentucky  i think the only thing we have good here, is rookies. dining room/sports bar/club all in one. great food imo.

but for evansville (10 minutes away) my favorite is hacienda. there are a few scattered throughout indiana. mmmmmmm....
Why would anyone intentionally go to Henderson, KY? I mean, other than to gum some hillbilly teat?

And believe me, Bloomington is an OASIS, in the middle of all these cornfields!

My favorite and greatest Minneapolis haunts for dining....

Duplex; Uptown Minneapolis: the former Pandora's coffee shop, has a very limited menu, but everything on it is great. Fresh, mostly local ingredients, their sweet potato fries, pasta, soup, and salad is all to die for.

Quang; Nicollet Ave, Uptown Minneapolis: BEST VIETNAMESE FOOD, EVER. Their Pho is the best I've ever had, and is enough for 3 meals.

True Thai; Seward Neighborhood; South Minneapolis: Yum. One of my favorites is the fried yams. Delicious!

Gangchen; Nicollet Ave; Downtown Minneapolis: I've heard this is the only Tibetan bar in the U.S. Their food, a combination of traditional Tibetan, Chinese, and Vietnamese, is always good. I love the cranberry curry puffs.

There are so many good places... I'll probably think of more, later.

I spent 4 years as a Hoosier going to school Bloomington from 1993-1997. I hear it's really different now. Although i still miss a few of the campus delivery places. Best cheese sticks! And there was a place that would deliver ice cream sundaes.

Let's see... in Lexington, KY, we've got Malone's, which is a really good steakhouse. If you want good "Southern" food (like fried green tomatoes)...Ramsey's is the place. Lexington is hosting the World Equestrian Games this year, so come out and visit. :wavey:

Hey!!! I'm an IU alum, class of '92! BA in psych.
Bloomington has changed some. But I don't really think for the worse. The biggest thing is all the HIGH DOLLAR apartments, that they've built downtown. There are a few(what I'd call for here) high rise apt buildings. Rent is like $1500.....that's alot for here, I think.
Ever go to the Bluebird? I do sound there, and was doing it also, during your tenure at IU.

Nope- just spent a fair amount of time in the Lexington/Richmond corridor in the mid-late 90's.

I did some checking- it looks like some of the same people who were involved in Jozo's have a new mini-chain (two locations) - http://www.gumboyayaky.com/ Looks delicious!

I minored in Psych so I spent some time in that crazy mazelike Psych building. Wow...high rises in downtown. I remember when they built a 3 or 4 story hotel and that seemed like a lot. I remember a little bit about downtown. I can't remember exactly, but down Kirkwood was it? 1500 sounds like a lot for Indiana for rent. Now where I currently live....

Don't think I ever went ot the Bluebird. If I did, it was once or twice. Nicks, Kilroy's...your basic college hangouts were where i ended up. And a lot of house parties for the perpetual broke college student. I worked at Mr D's supermarket one year. I used to hate telling people that they couldn't buy wine on Sundays. I still think that is strange, but hey, I'm from a state where it's illegal to pump your own gas.

I've recently reconnected with my best friend from school who lives just north of Indy so hopefully I'll make it out there this spring and I can see B-town for myself.

Is Dagwoods still there? Can't remember what else was unique to that area that I would frequent to eat.

Best overall menu - excellent steaks, fish and gumbo - Eastside Bar and Grill Northampton, MA

Great fish - New England Style: Snow's Restaurant Ware, MA

Honorable mention: the Monkey Bar/Bistro - Amherst MA

Pub Faire: Amherst Brewing Company - excellent brews too.

And if in New England - try those little lobster/fish stands along the coast - the are the best.

I used to live in Lexington a long time ago and used to go to Cheapside, commongrounds, I loved Ramsey's
(there was a restaurant that was outside of a really nice bookstore overlooking a manmade pond the Regatta maybe- that was really good too)
there is a local breakfast diner that is in Georgetown - where all the local horse people go it so good I can't remember the name of it...

my friends and I used to party at a bar called Rosebuds too - I loved it there (some really good live music) .

I live in Massachusetts now - and there are sssoooo many but some of my favorites are Dali's for topas (so good) !!! 3's for Greek and Davio's (don't even know New Bedford or Fall River where there are even better restaurants - I have to get there soon)!!!!

in RI (where I grew up - haha right) I am craving O Cha or Thai Star for Thai, Don Jose, Andrea's for Greek - Red Ginger, Oaki's, Olga's ....too many - now I'm hungry:(

He grew up in Seymour, but has lived here in Bloomington, since he was young(I'm guessing about 18...there's a very young pic of him, at my club, where he doesn't look like he could be over 20). Yeah, Kirkwood leads to downtown, with Walnut and College Ave being the "main drag".

High rises...I think the biggest one, is like 8 stories tall.

Yeah, Nicks and Kilroys are still here(both Kilroys, were there two, when you were here? I forget how long "Kilroy's Sports Bar" has been here....It's downtown, between the Bluebird and Jakes[Jakes was called either Mars or Axis, when you were here]). Kilroy's business is so-so. Nick's will always be here. It's an IU institution. On football weekends, you can't even get in the door!

And yeah, IN's Sunday liquor laws are archaic! Although now, at least all bars CAN be open on Sunday, if they choose. Until about 5 years ago, a bar had to do a certain percentage of food sales, to be open. At least they changed that! But yeah, no carryout on Sundays!

Dagwood's is still there. A friend of my best friend in high school, is the one who started Dagwoods. I remember thinking, "oh, he'll never make it", and he's STILL in business!

Hmmmm...the Long Island I know is kinda boring, but I think I got a few things from the depths of deepest, darkest Suffolk County.

J&R Steakhouse in Stony Brook is an interesting little chain. Me and my friend Sam had dinner there 9:00 at night after we had seen Avatar at the AMC down the road and the only thing I really remember is that their steaks are really good.

Ralph's Italian Ices in Farmingville (there's also ones in Stony Brook right by J&R and in Lake Ronkonkoma) have some pretty kickass ices in some very interesting flavors, such as rainbow cookie (my current favorite), Milky Way, Snickers...I could go on and on.

Of course, this is New York, and we do have pizza and bagel places. For pizza, check out Village Pizza in Farmingville. It took over for this other place called Michael's, but it's the best pizza in town, not to mention they have a little specialty my family in Queens knows and loves: garlic knot crust pizza.

Onto bagels, most people I know are nuts for Strathmore in Selden, but I prefer Bagel N' A Hole Lot More up in Port Jefferson. If you want a true New York bagel, go there. You'll be in for a real treat.

I probably have more, but gimme some time.

I'll be listening when you do! (BTW, re: pizza- ever check out Carlo's Pizza Oven in Holbrook? I know they have another location in the area. You have no idea how hard it is to find meatball as a topping outside Tri-State area. gahh!)

One thing I got spoiled with by growing up on Long Island was the glorious overabundance of Jewish delicatessens. Its right up there at the tip top in terms of the culture shocks experienced after moving to suburban Phoenix.. I was so spoiled.

I grew up loving Benkert's Bakery (on Middle Country in Centereach - http://www.benkerts.com/ ), and now I see that they added a deli next door??!? Cassie, if anything about baked goods/deli foods interests you, I beg/implore you to check this place out and tell me if its any good!

I've been to Benkert's many times and you don't get what you paid for IMO. You spend a ton of money on a gorgeous cake, but it just doesn't taste half as good as it looks. If you ask me, a Costco cake gives you mucxh more bang for your buck (spend 20 bucks for half a sheet cake that tastes delicious).

Yeah, the deli was added recently and it took over this restaurant-thingy that gave a Thanksgiving dinner to people who didn't have anybody.

I've never been to Carlo's, but whatever you do, don't go to Pauly's, which is in this shopping center right across from Cancos Tiles in Farmingville. Before we got Village, we used to have Michael's, and when that was closed for a few months, we needed a new pizza place, Pauly's being one of them. All I can say is their pizza is just nasty. The sauce is sweet, the cheese has a weird texture, but they do have a good Sicilian crust.

And as for Jewish deli, I can tell you 2 things: Ben's is garbage (and the one by the mall on 347 is now a Zan's, which is still garbage) and the best deli around is one way over on whatever-they-call-Middle-Country-Road-in-Western-Suffolk in Commack that's just called a Kosher deil that's small, in a shopping ceneter with Waldbaum's, and is probably the bets deli you'll ever have.
