View Full Version : An Emotional Life- Divorce, Emotions, and Past Relationships- A Mini Vent By: Ethan

Alrighty guys- I know these threads have never been terribly popular, but it has probably been almost a year since I've done one, and this has been on my mind- so I thought I'd share.
As you all know, my parents have been going through separation, and in addition my mothers parents are no longer in communication with us because of a financial disagreement my parents got into with their adopted son (by blood he's my cousin). This cutting of contacts happened during the summer, so Needless to say, things have been hard. Going through a divorce hasn't been easy, and to not have any grandparents or familial support has been rough. But I have managed. I have learned to emotionally detach myself from a lot of it, and it has helped get me through. This being said, I feel like I haven't felt as emotionally tied to people as I once have. I have been very focused on my studies, and my future as a choral educator, but feel like I have been distancing myself from some people along the way.
I know in the past, I would always ramble on and on about said girl and whatever. I know it was ANNOYING AS HELL (yes, I really do realize that), but part of that tumult and back and forth, and loving someone unrequitedly was kind of nice, and I miss it. Reason I say I miss it is because there hasn't been anyone who I have had THAT feeling for. That feeling where you are constantly thinking about the person, wanting to be with them and so on. There has only been one girl since I have been in college, but that obviously didn't pan out. This year though, there has been nobody, and in a weird sort of way I miss it.
And then I worry if I have distanced and disconnected myself from people too much. Because of the divorce, I wonder if I have detached emotion from interaction with some people. And it's like.... I'm not happy with what is in front of me. Tying that into the girl situation- there is nobody that I am acquaintances with right now that I am interested in. It's like that feeling that I used to have for said women is totally gone from my life, and for awhile it was a GREAT thing. But now it has been so long that I am beginning to wonder if I am either tooooo picky in my choice of girls (I REFUSE to settle) or if in fact I have started distancing myself.
This leads us to the present. I am not going to lie, I have a tendency to NOT delete old facebook messages. I have been having some flashback feelings to someone who was once very special to me, and reading these old communications, and the change in them as time went on has got me feeling kind of..... I don't know- sad in a way...... kind of the same flustered feeling I've felt that comes with rejection. I know a lot of you have seen the pictures I posted recently, from my high school Madrigal Dinners. One of the pictures was with me with someone who meant a lot to me my senior year- (she's the girl with the short brown hair). Since she at one point was special and a good friend at one point, I decided to use the picture as my desktop background. Not only did I think it was a nice picture, but I wanted to see if I could potentially feel again. See if I would have some sort of feeling of "memory lane" if you will- that feeling that she used to give me. Know what I mean? She was unlike anyone that I had tried to get to know in my life. She was very beautiful to me, but even more than that, she would approach ME and seemed interested in me. She seemed interested in ME! This being said- YES, the picture has brought back a lot.... maybe too much? The first time we really got the chance to talk was at a football game- and we talked for HOURS!!! The entire game. I couldn't even tell you who we were playing, because we were so into it. We had the same principles and beliefs, and viewpoints on life. We had the EXACT same sense of humor. I could be my goofy sarcastic self, and she was the first person who I had ever met who TOTALLY got it, and could throw it RIGHT back at me.
For about a couple of months after that game we saw each other all the time. And like I said, she was unlike anything I had ever know. She would stop MEEEE when she saw me in the halls to talk. She was always smiling, and I was completely natural around her. We also had an ongoing Facebook dialogue during this time. We would see each other and talk to each other almost every day before school, and she was in choir as well, so we often saw each other after school as well. I still remember the time one morning before school where I walked past her 1st period class and she was in the room. I was more than halfway down the next hallway when I hear my name above the crowds..... and it was her, wanting to do our morning walk and talk. She was amazing.
Like I said earlier, I've gone through some old communications and have been reminded again of how this girl has changed- sadly. Like I said, for about a month and a half, (September through late October) she was seriously (in my mind), totally going to be the first girl I asked out. Then- during the homecoming dance, I could notice a change. She wouldn't come after me- she had stopped the little things she used to always do, and there was definitely distance, and a change in positive tone in her FB messages. She then for a short period of time liked another guy, but nothing materialized. I tried to get things started back up again because I was at a New Years Party with her- but she was distant. It terribly broke me.
Early in the next year she began dating an older guy. He was much different than she. Long story short, this sweetheart, almost soul mate of a girl has completely changed. She is still with the guy- who really was and is her first relationship. The second semester of my senior year, I really never saw her. It was like, this girl was 100% a part of my life- and then literally overnight it was like the rug was completely pulled out from under me.
After I graduated, we would share a couple pleasantries on Facebook for the first semester or so of college- mostly of her answering some question I asked her about how she got through her parents' divorce.
Then one night we had a conversation. We were chatting, and for whatever reason we got onto the topic of relationships. She of course is happy in hers, and knows that I have had trouble in that particular field in my life. We had talked about it before, and how things were going in college, so she totally knew the stories. We were talking vaguely about the girls who meant something to me my senior year, and I think she then asked who they were. I firstly informed her about the one who came after her, and then I kind of paused...... And I told her that she was the other girl.
(paraphrase)
"Ethan... I am so sorry."
"You have nothing to be sorry about, why would you be sorry?"
"Because I have caused you pain, and I feel like I am the reason you are so upset."
"I could never be upset with you."
It was a really sweet moment- she was the first person that I ever told upright- even if it was after the fact. She told me that she had always seen me as a great friend- but not particularly like that. Unfortunately, this changed a LOT of things.
I saw this girl not too long thereafter in person at the Madrigal Dinners LAST year. During the meet and greet in the middle, she came up and talked to me, and things were really sweet. It was cool, knowing she knew and everything. But that night was really a turning point.
Since then, she hasn't replied to any message I've sent her on Facebook. Doesn't matter what it's about, she hasn't replied- and this is coming from a girl who would always reply within hours. We have had a couple 20 second chat sessions dealing with some question I would have about ticket sales, or something obsolete, but that is as far as it has gone via facebook. I remember one time, and I can't remember exactly when last year this was, but her boyfriend randomly started chatting with me, telling me that the girl doesn't appreciate how I'm overly complimentary with her. I then told him that if she had a problem with me, I needed to hear it from her.
I have seen this girl a few times as I visit my old high school choir friends, but when I send her a message saying that it was nice seeing her- I hear nothing back.
And so that is where I am right now. I'm kind of looking back at it with sadness. For a couple of months, this girl was really EVERYTHING. She meant a lot to me for more than that couple of months, but for that time, it was really heavy. In one way, I am glad that I have been able to feel again for someone, looking back at things. But it is kind of upsetting to see how things changed between the two of us. I know it is not my fault- I did nothing wrong, but it is still sad. Then I think about how she's going to be graduating and going to college next year, and how there is a chance that I really very well may never see her (or those people I went to school with) again.....
This is hard, because it is not that I still have feelings for this girl- this whole thing has just kind of stirred up old emotions. Does that make any sense? So in once sense I am glad that I can feel for a person, but I am just waiting and wondering if/when it will happen again, because it has been awhile and I am worried that maybe I have lost my touch. I don't know, it is something that runs around in my head.
Guys, thank you for listening to my ramble a bit here- I'm just thinking about the great days of my senior year of high school, and really- the fall of 2007, and how everything seemed sooooo right. I believed that I was going to experience something that I had never experienced before, but obviously that wasn't meant to be. But it just makes you wonder WHAT IN THE WORLD have I done wrong. If I couldn't even get together with someone who at the time had SOOOO much in common with me, who in the world will I be able to get together with. The two girls that came after the girl of tonight's discussion were much different. We never had the same chemistry, and natural connection. I had to try very hard to figure out what it was that I was going to say. Every day was a battle. It was difficult because I could never read them, and didn't have the opportunity to spend as much natural time with them as I was this one girl. Things were just different. And sometimes I just get flustered and wonder why there hasn't been someone who I've felt as natural and attracted to as that one special girl. Why was she so different.... or rather, why does everyone else have to be different, and what can I do to make myself stand out, and be different. She wasn't my first love- but the whole situation was different.
Fall 2007 was excellently different
Alex was different~

Ethan, I believe I had the exact same issue as you back when I was in school. There was a girl I was madly in love with who shared my interests, my sense of humour, taste in music, etc. For a few months she was all I could think about, I was just constantly waiting for the next time I could see her. She lived about 5 miles away but just about every weekend we would meet with some other friends, and if for any reason I couldn't meet her on the weekend I would be heartbroken until I next saw her. But then she changed and began having an attitude. She would criticize mine and my friends' ideas, humour, find ways to excuse herself from spending time with us in and out of school. She started to ignore my calls. Then one night I tried called her and she picked up, before telling me that she'd asked nicely and could I please stop calling her for f***'s sake  I was extremely upset that night but from the next day on I grew to hate her. I was in school with her for another year, trying to ignore her as much as possible. I guess in retrospect that wasn't the right thing to do, but I still can't see what I did wrong. I haven't seen her since, but I've maintained a great relationship with one of her friends. Having said that the whole experience made me rethink my priorities and concentrate on what was important at the time, school, friends and family. I started to enjoy myself a lot more from there on. Thank you Ethan, I thought I was the only one who'd gone through something like this

Hang on, just reading through a second time...
(I hope this reply doesn't sound too much like it's all about me!)
"This being said, I feel like I haven't felt as emotionally tied to people as I once have. I have been very focused on my studies, and my future as a choral educator, but feel like I have been distancing myself from some people along the way."
Okay, this is probably going to sound either deeply regressive or just plain cold, but... I wouldn't worry too much about feeling a bit less emotionally tied to people. (Aren't I egocentric and mean?!) I've noticed that for quite a while now, perhaps the past year or more, I've seemed a bit emotionally distant. Perhaps it's a result of the pessimism I have for the workings of the world, and the effort I empty into trying to get people to think philosophically, scientifically, skeptically and rationally. It always feels like I'm trying to fill a leaking bucket! But I realised within the past few months that my mild emotional coldness can be channeled into renewing my focus on encouraging people to think in said ways, and to reserve my emotional feelings for... wait for it... enjoying music! Yes, I listen to music and let myself be moved to tears by the likes of "Brown Eyes", ready to take on the world again with my cold, rationalistic ways! Anyway, moving on...
Okay, there's no short quotes for this comment, but nonetheless...
Well, I've never had a perfect girl to admire as you have. So in that respect, count yourself lucky! I doubt many people would experience that in their lifetimes (in the western world, that is... everywhere else is so impoverished that it seems highly improbable anyone elsewhere would have the chance... but that's another ramble, and I shan't go into that here)! (Ooh, "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush just came on the radio! How appropriate! :)) But I have had two serious interests (let's call it love for simplicity) in girls... once at primary school, grade five/six, and another at university last year. However, I never told either of them how I felt... although the first girl probably knew. Surprisingly, whenever either of them are mentioned, for whatever reason, I still feel a bit self-conscious. It's remarkably odd, wouldn't you say? I mean, it's not as if I'm still interested in either of them! Then again...
"This is hard, because it is not that I still have feelings for this girl- this whole thing has just kind of stirred up old emotions. Does that make any sense?"
Perfect sense! That's exactly what I mean about how I feel!
Personally I've somewhat tried to avoid relationships though, to concentrate more on other things (I'm easily distracted as it is!) like uni. However, I have other reasons... one being that, if a woman wanted to survive with me, they'd seriously want to like Fleetwood Mac, Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music, Sting & The Police, and other "old people's" music (my tastes extend back into the fifties)! Another is my strict rationalism (some would say I'm just highly opinionated and rigid, but I disagree ). While you don't have to agree with what I say (especially if you're a friend of mine... I'm always up for a friendly intellectual debate), you'd want to if you don't enjoy debating, and/or don't like analyzing everything under the sun and the rest of the universe! :D Oh, and there's one last reason... I have a fetish for rubber/latex gloves and stockings (but that's as weird and obscure as it gets). Shh!!!
Is this relevant anymore? Or have I gone on a tangent? Yep, it's a tangent! :sorry: Maybe I should summarize...
1. Don't worry about being a bit emotionally cold towards people. Just be rational and respectful! And be sure to find something to be emotional about, like I am with music and Fleetwood Mac! Emptying your thoughts on this thread isn't a bad start though, but I'm sure there's something else you can attach to as well. Actually, that's another thing - many people often say that you shouldn't obsess over certain things, or moreover that obsession is bad. Interests are apparently okay, but not obsession. Personally, I think it's important to find something, or indeed multiple things, to really commit to and obsess about. It's what helps us be individuals, able to think for ourselves! But something that shouldn't be obsessed over, among other things, is people. Like I just said, don't worry about being a bit emotionally cold towards people.
2. The experience you had with that girl was something very special - I personally think really quite out of the ordinary! So don't be too concerned if you don't experience that again. Btw, imo, I don't think either perfect matches or opposites can last forever. Part of an extended relationship is, I'm guessing, each person trying to shape and mold the parts (i.e. interests, opinions etc.) of each other that differ, while enjoying the parts that you share and wouldn't want to change.
3. Politically, I'm an anarchist. For those who appreciate what that actually means, rather than the commonplace stereotypes of anarchism, you'll probably notice that shining through a little in this post.
4. If it wasn't already obvious enough, I'm a scientist and philosophical skeptic.
This is probably one of the more... controversial... posts that I'll make on this forum. I'm already eagerly awaiting the refutations of this post people will give!
Oh, and btw, as far as I can tell by the evidence of your post, you are indeed a really nice and friendly person Ethan! :) Don't ever forget that!
(Wow, what a long post! And, funnily enough, it was all about me... :sorry:)

I want to thank you all for your complimentary comments! It is really appreciated. It is great to know that i am not the only person who has gone through stuff like this.
A little clarification- Alex and I never dated. We were never an item.
The thing that made Alex different was that at the time, she didn't have a boyfriend, and never really had. The girls before her either had had a boyfriend at the time I was interested, or they were remarkably different than I was.
Also, the two girls after her, again either had a boyfriend- or like the one in college, she just was NOT into me..... Just throwing that out there for clarification. So, with that being said, I do have faith that the feeling I had with Alex will definitely happen again- all we need is someone with similar interests, but more importantly, interest in me, so that I am not the only one doing all of the pursuing. Make sense?
The thing that is hard about this whole situation is that I know I would have been the best boyfriend that this girl could have ever needed. I take care of people, and am interesting, funny and humorous. It's just sad that I never got the chance to show her what I would have meant.

Maybe this is a dumb thing to say, but maybe Alex changed toward you because she thought you didn't feel the way she felt for you. It's obvious to me that she liked you a lot! :) If I had acted that way with a guy who I thought liked me and then he never acted on it, I would have backed off too. Hopefully you'll get another chance with her. Yet, don't let the past blind you to others who you may meet who could be even more right for you. You will eventually find the right person for you. I know people say that a lot, but it does happen. I was almost 26 before I met the right person. We've been together almost 10 years now!! (Maybe you're looking in the wrong place, because I met him online!) :)

I see what you're saying and agree with you- but since Alex was so different, she made me different- as in I really was outgoing and stuff with her. I think that the one guy she became interested in, she was probably interested in the whole time, but just didn't show it. Like I said, she eventually told me that she only viewed me as a really good friend. I would have eventually asked her out, but first I wanted to build a relationship, and right when things I thought couldn't have been better, things instantly started going downhill. I acted the same way toward her as she acted with me, so if there was something there, she would have shown it more. Plus, she has since told me that she wasn't interested.
I want to find someone who makes me feel like that. She has since changed and is definitely no longer the girl I once knew which is sad.... but very true.

Ethan, I think it's pretty normal that you're having a harder time connecting to people lately. You've been going through a rough time with your parents, and I know that when I'm having trouble at home, my first coping mechanism is to shut down. Sometimes, there's nothing you can do except ride it out and know that things are going to get better again.
As far as this girl Alex goes, my honest opinion is that when she realized you were interested in her, she felt guilty for leading you on and decided to blow you off instead. It isn't right, but it's a pattern of behavior I've seen over and over.

Thank you for your words. Yeah, I am hoping you are right about the shutting down thing- I do see it, and think that that is definitely a possibility.
As for Alex, it is not that I am wanting to go back to her or anything- furthest from it, because she really is no longer the girl that I once knew. Just thinking about the time though, and how it went from soooo good, something that I hadn't experienced before, to the same old rejection thing and then seeing her change, is kind of hard. Also, seeing how this cycle with past girls has gone is rough too. Getting to know them, becoming interested in them, and then nothing ever working out is hard. Having that happen 5 times in a row is just kind of....
Unfortunate~
The big thing though is just the fact that I never had the chance to show her what I could have meant to her. I look at her now and just think that if she had given me the chance, we could be a happy couple today, and things would be great. But we'll never know- and though I have moved on, the thought still sometimes comes across my mind. I know I really could have meant a lot to her and loved her unconditionally and made her very happy!

An Emotional Life- Divorce, Emotions, and Past Relationships
this sounds like a lifetime movie begging to be made.
i suggest you substitute a different adjective for "emotional," though. the title is redundant.
how about "a turbulent life"? "tortuous"? what if we shake things up completely and work your musical interests and whatnot into it? "an emotional melisma: ethan kinkle's brave journey through bull****"?

Ethan, welcome to life. All this BS you're going through is the stuff your parents can't really prepare you for as you're growing up in your "child bubble." Just remember, whatever it is you're going through... it isn't all that bad compared to what's going on in the rest of the world. Let that put your personal anguish into perspective.

my feelings for ethan aside, this advice is terrible. "welcome to life"? "it's not that bad compared to what's going on in the rest of the world"? come on. people who think they've seen it all say crap like that in an attempt to invalidate somebody else's struggles and it's bull. when your dad died, did it make you feel better to tell yourself that it's not as bad as what some AIDS orphan in africa is going through? it's always good to have some perspective on your own struggles, but when the first and only advice out of someone's mouth is that somebody else has it worse, that's when it's time to find a better source of wisdom.
as for his parents not being able to prepare him for this bull****, of course they can't, since they're causing much of it.

Still looking at this picture from the dinners and it's still bringing back some feelings. I miss this girl- WHYYYY is it that she would totally stop responding to me???? WTH?
Dude. Really. If you act in real life the way you act on here, I have a guess as to why she would stop responding to you. From reading your posts and threads, you seem to be about 14 or 15 years old, not the 19 or 20 years that you are.
Maybe you should get some advice from some real life friends or a school counselor instead of seeking the answers to life's great mysteries on a Fleetwood Mac message board.

Now remember, the rules are simple, and fair. 1) Appearance of helpfulness gets you zero points. 2) If you fail, you'll get a cantankerous debunking of your post in which the replying Ledgie is under no obligation to back up his/her lampooning of your advice (or lack thereof) with a solution of their own.
I'll help you step up to the plate by giving you a nudge in the right direction... Perhaps a chat with the young man when he's down in the Cayman's? That's just it. You weren't sincerely asking for advice on how to deal with your parent's divorce. You were pondering why some girl stopped talking to you - over a year and a half ago. Double check the post of yours that I quoted - you'll see.
So, you proved my point. Discussing why some girl stopped talking to you in high school is not deep, substantive conversation.

& to add that some folks don't know what you are going thru, IE you're parents divorce, is very rude~ like what you said to pip~ i was gonna chime in, that she knows what she was talking about~ if you had been around long enough, or could get your head out of your own little world for awhile, you would know, that she has gone thru seperation & divorce & alot of us were wishing her the best~ but i knew she would & could speak on that herself~

But the divorce was a part of the original thought process. If we just isolate and choose to look at the only question in a conversation, that wouldn't be looking at the whole picture.

Come down off the cross already. Isn't it time for your 23rd date with Juan R.? I was discussing this with Ethan. No need for you to get involved, he doesn't need your protection. Go look back through all of the inane threads Ethan has started. Whenever they got heated, Ethan would pop in and say, "oh don't fight over me you all" and then abandon the thread. I will be keeping this post for future cut & pastes. ;) It applies to so many posts I've read here over the years, so I'm sure it will apply in the future.
Ethan wants to know why "veteran ledgies" didn't find this thread thought-provoking. He thinks it's a post of "substance" that will jump-start conversation here. Well, it's because nobody wants to read a long-assed story about you & your life without being asked to share something about theirs. It would have been different if you had posted that your parents are divorcing & it sucks, and you wanted to know what are other ledgie's experiences with divorce have been. But you never do that. Ever.
The reason you turn people off is that you never show any interest in any other members' threads, posts, lives. You frequently ask for "yours guys alls" advice & then never return to read it (or if you do, you don't bother to acknowledge that you've done so.) It's rude, and it's a waste of my (and many other posters') time to bother to read & respond to any your threads because it's obvious you don't WANT to know what yous guys all think.
I can't believe you're still here pulling the same ****. Seriously. Either you get off on baiting people into bitching at/about you (see, you got me again!) or you're ridiculously socially immature for your age with a touch of ADHD. You're either a mad genius or developmentally disabled. I still can't figure out which, so shame on me. :distress:

First of all, I asked you all if this thread was thought provoking.
I have asked about other peoples' lives and have started many threads involving others lives, but they often go undetected. That is not my problem. To say that I don't care about other peoples' lives is a complete crock of bull.
This was a completely legitimate thread- not filled with "****" as you called it. People post about personal thoughts all the time- but it seems as though I am the ONLY one that ever hears about it. There is no baiting or BS involved. The reason people have a problem with me is because a select few people get turned off by my posts (which is totally fine) and then decide to blow it up- disturbing the peace. It is this disturbing of peace that causes people issues, not my "****". This is why when things get out of hand I ask for them to stop and then stop posting, because I refuse to perpetuate it.
I know you have a deal with me but you don't need to get things worked up because of it. Feel free to take it up with me in PM.

i find you very insensitive ethan, here's one point why~ you used to pm me alot, w/ well wishes & such~ i don't know why, as we haven't a close friendship, but i am not mean by nature & i would reply back~ at one time i didn't reply right away because i had just had to put my 4 year old dog to sleep~ it was sudden & heartbreaking & i wasn't in the pming mood~
when i did finally get back to you & told you why i hadn't responded, your answer to me was~ "well yeah, my greyhound has cancer, so you know, you'll get over it"~ i thought that was horribly insensitive & hurtful~ i didn't expect you to bend over backwards & send me a card or flowers or anything~ but coming from someone who post all the time like he is this super sensitive guy, to seem so cold & uncaring just rubbed me the wrong way~ i got the feeling that because it wasn't about you, your feelings & life, you just didn't care~
so when people feel the same about what goes on in your little world can you see why?~

I'm curious though, the title of this thead says it all. For those people who are over the Ethan-centred threads why do you even bother reading it? I like Ethan, I do, but I don't bother reading these theads any more. I'll sometimes quickly skim (as I'm doing now) to see if there is anything I want to read then move on. (Personally I tend to do this with most of the Chit Chat forum not just Ethan related threads).
I would understand the concern if Ethan was hijacking other threads and talking about himself (and maybe he has done this in the past I don't know) but really he can talk about himself to his hearts content in a thread clearly marked so and those who care can contribute and those that don't can ignore it.
So, I'm finished skimming, going back to reading the thread about Paper Doll now... ;)

Ethan -
At the risk of repeating what others have said (I got cross-eyed trying to make it through this thread, so I didn't actually read every post), the reason why so many Ledgies have a problem with your posts is that, even after nearly 4 years of being here, you haven't matured a bit.
You constantly profess that you have changed, but absolutely nothing has changed. Why, in the very first post of this thread you said this:
I know in the past, I would always ramble on and on about said girl and whatever. I know it was ANNOYING AS HELL (yes, I really do realize that)
and you then proceeded to ramble on and on and ON about some girl you liked in HIGH SCHOOL but never had the balls to ask out or even express your feelings to until it was too late.
And you wonder why people got annoyed as hell and started mocking you, criticizing you, etc.?
Clearly you either don't actually realize just how annoying you truly are or you take glee in irritating the hell out of people. If the latter is the case, just own it already. If the former is the case, then you are undoubtedly socially "disabled" and beyond hope. Either way, please, please stop posting this crap.

God damn, Ethan... how old are you now?
Want to talk emotional life? Find your mother screwing another man - not your father. While they're still married.
Give birth to a 2 lb. baby. Go home without her. Visit her in the hospital everyday for 2 months.
Survive the suicide of your husband at 25 years old. Then explain it to the 4 year old.
IDK, maybe I'm a hardened bitch, but seriously? Emotional life? Then you go on and on about some girl? I know I don't have it that bad. I'm not even complaining. But there is my "emotional life" summed up in 50 words or less. I guess my point is that you're a grown man. Suck it up and move on, or get some professional therapy.

But there is my "emotional life" summed up in 50 words or less. I guess my point is that you're a grown man. Suck it up and move on, or get some professional therapy.

Want to talk emotional life? Find your mother screwing another man - not your father. While they're still married.
Give birth to a 2 lb. baby. Go home without her. Visit her in the hospital everyday for 2 months.

I read this whole thread. Because I'm a masochist. And I figured something interesting was going on due to all the replies. D'oh.
Ethan, everyone goes through hard times. Some, like Maria, go through harder times than others. And maybe some, like Maria, have more tools in the mental toolbox to handle hard times than others do - whether they have tools already due to natural tendencies or they figured out how to build new tools to suit - but you can either get some new tools so you can work with what you've got or you can spend the rest of your life unhappy and Kermit-flailing to strangers on the Ledge.
If you need professional therapy, I can provide invaluable life advice for a mere 5 cents. Like Lucy.

"Alrighty" Ethan, well here's some thoughts.
This might be a little disjointed, but to be honest I don't have time to make it a work of art:
First up, realize that you're young. And the girl is young. You're human, she's human, mistakes are going to be made. If she's thinking anything at all it's probably "I wish I hadn't led him on."
Things work a certain way. They have for millions of years. But society has changed - a great deal. You seem to not understand the implications of that, especially when dealing with young people. I think that that's something you need to spend a great deal of time thinking about.
Also - and I'm not trying to be mean here - You strike me as someone who doesn't realize - or doesn't want to accept - that certain actions in social relationships have permanent consequences. Some of your language in this post may be a perfect example of that. You say, "AND I KNOW I WAS ANNOYING AS HELL" and then go on to ask those very same people that you've "annoyed" about this. As others have said, however, anyone who didn't want to read this thread didn't have to. But somehow, you seem to just not GET this, and I feel that it's very important that you do - -
SOME THINGS CAN NEVER, NEVER BE UNDONE.
I admit that's something that took me a long time to get, personally. But it's one of those "hard truths of life" that you have to accept if you're going to grow up.
One reason that it's very important that you "get" that is because some people have perceived your behavior towards some of these women - and that includes Stevie - as stalking. Ethan, this seems to be more of the same, at least to a point. And you have to be "very careful" in this day and age. COOL YOUR ENGINES. STOP TRYING TO FORCE THINGS. And that IS what you've continued to try to do, with a young woman who had already labelled you as a "Friend." I've said it before and I and MANY others will try to get this across to you again - once you're labelled as a "Friend," it's over.
That's almost ALWAYS true. And no, the friendship almost certainly can't be saved after it reaches that stage. Certainly when she told you that she's Not Interested, you made things much worse by continuing to pursue her; and that IS what you were doing and you knew it and she knew that you knew it.
Now, you're an intelligent person. You KNOW that the family issues you're going through are triggering this, or at least making it worse. You're feeling sentimental and nostalgic for a simpler past; and you're maybe feeling some pressure to get into a serious relationship because your home life is changing significantly. It's natural and normal to feel that way; and I'm sorry if some have been unsympathetic to those feelings. But SINCE you DO understand those feelings, you should ACT ACCORDINGLY. DON'T BOTHER THE GIRL. IF she's going to come back to you at all, let HER do that. I'll tell you once again, you HAVE to get the concept of the Chinese Finger Puzzle, because until you get that you are going to have very serious problems in your social life. And Ethan, people TALK about these things. How do you know somebody didn't give this girl a heads-up that you have a History of getting over-attached to women who just want to be friends and then stalking them?
Just THINK about these things, that's all I'm saying. I wouldn't bother if you weren't worth it; you VERY much are. I think you have a LOT of love to give and you're eager to do so; 300 years ago young women probably would have considered you "romantic." But you need to get that it's not 300 years ago. Women have a lot of choices and young women - I hope I won't offend anyone here - have a tendency to choose young men that they find physically attractive. In some ways you're probably MORE mature than most of these other guys, in SOME ways you're more ready for a "serious relationship" than the young women and their attractive, athletic boyfriends may be (in general). So work what you've got and stop allowing it to get in your way by over and over trying to force things to progress faster than their natural pace or in a different way than they're "meant to." It really does seem to be a consistent pattern of behavior that's repeating itself over and over and over again.
Be patient with life, be patient with the young women and be patient with yourself. I have no doubt that if you just simply
have faith - in the young women and in yourself - and in life -
then things will work out great for you. And so I'm gonna just
say it flat-out - - - There's people you marry, and there's people you f*ck. You're probably the kind of guy who - once he grows up - will end up happily married. But right now most of the young women in your age group aren't mature enough for that. "Girls just want to have fun."
Obviously I'm stereotyping and generalizing, but I think maybe you should think about some of these things. And for god's sake, as I and others have told you before, get some self-help books on relationships with women and read them. Definitely take those with a grain of salt too, but the more you start to learn about this NOW, the better off you're gonna be. And why not watch some romantic comedies on tv? You might be surprised what you can learn.
See yourself the way you are - - A "young bird" who's just starting to flap his wings, and maybe having a bit of trouble flying - as many of us do in one form or another. But get those wings flapping, and keep them flapping even when the rug's been pulled out from under you. Sooner or later another young bird will notice, and will like the way you flap your wings.

You know what- thank you. I really appreciate this. The first thought that comes to mind with the posting on here is that I really needn't post EVERY thought that comes to mind, and I have the tendency that when I am thinking or feeling something, I feel the need to post it here. And I really SHOULD NOT do that. Because I think about a lot of things, and all it would do is bombard all of you all.
As for the sentimental situation with the girl- it has since passed, so it's alright. I really do hear you out though, and appreciate you taking the time to let me know what you think! I just.... for some reason don't constrain myself as much online vs. in person. Why. You always illicit a negative response and yet you act like we are your personal therapists. You're not <i>bombarding</i>, you're goading. Or, as someone else mentioned, you're emotionally unbalanced. Personally, I think it's a nice little balance of the two. But who asked me- I find you amusing.

i have nothing against people who talk too much, but i think, ethan, you should be much more respectful. nor only for the topic you chose, but specially for the way you talk about it.
thank God i can't complain about my life, but some people have serious, real problems, and talking about "yours", really...sounds ridiculous. it'd be very different, as some people have pointed, if we were discussing something, and we would have been exchanging experiences...
nevertheless, your "tendency" is not even original. there's a lot of examples in literature or movies, characters that summarize well the way you are. i bet most of us had a classmate like you, or what's worse, an uncle, or a sister-in-law, or a neighbour...if you were one and only maybe i'd be even complacent with you, but u don't have a bit of grace.
this thread is like a tabloid talk show...but the difference is that in the jerry springer show some explain terrible matters.

I am not Ethan's biggest fan, trust.
But: WHO THE FUKC DO YOU THREE THINK YOU ARE?
The other posters complaining about Ethan have been posting on this board before ANY of you even knew a song by Fleetwood Mac. They've tolerated him for MUCH longer than any of you have.
Lucy - you've been posting on this board for less than EIGHT MONTHS. You're a ****ing joke.
Shawna - same to you. You and Lucy should be absolutely ****ing crestfallen that you can turn something this emotionally honest into a personal joke.
Marina - Who the are you to say that Ethan's parent's divorce isn't a "real" problem? He may handle his emotions poorly, but this issue is as legitimate as any.
The weight of an individual's problem is determined by their ability to cope, not another's assessment.
Here's an article written by an American psychologist discussing his experiences with language barriers. Maybe some of this is being lost in translation for you.
http://shrinktalk.net/?p=368
Bottom line: Does Ethan handle himself poorly? ABSOLUTELY. But you three should be ASHAMED for your blatant shamelessness, insensitivity and intolerance.

You have no idea about me. None whatsoever. I'd happily be willing to give advice on dealing with the divorce of parents (I've experienced it) but when the problem is just a facade so as to discuss girl "problems" of something that happened years ago? Not okay. I find it to be an excuse to post yet another self-obsessed thread, poorly masked by something that is far more serious.
A ****ing joke? Really, is that the best you can come up with? I've been lurked this board about a year before I joined, and I think the time I've been on a Fleetwood Mac board is completely irrelevant when discussing life experience. It's foolish to even think it has anything to do with it.

ORLY? Once again - only defending Ethan to make my point. Where is this facade you speak of? Where in the title of this thread is it stated that divorce would be the only topic of conversation? In-fact! "Past Relationships" is even in the title! Seems pretty out-right to me. Oh, that's right. I'm not retarded.
Yet another self-obsessed thread, huh? Poorly masked by what? "An Emotional Life - Divorce, Emotions, and Past Relationships - A Mini Vent By: Ethan". Oh - you're right, I see the masking there. None of those things were blatantly discussed. I must not know how to read. Shocking, considering I'm reading, AND writing, at this very moment.
A ****ing joke is all I care to call you, I'd feel bad being anymore insulting. Dunce, ignoramus, dolt, all equally fitting, however.
Oh - and your time on this message board has nothing to do with your all-knowing of life experiences. Although - where exactly was your wisdom and comprehension of the human psyche displayed in this thread? Somewhere in your banter with golddustdrummer or brazlianbeauty? Yeah, right.

"Past relationships" is ambiguous, I read this thread expecting something serious, not a brief interaction with a girl two years ago disguised as something more to portray a thread of some real worth. I guess I overestimated Ethan. :sorry: I guess that also makes me an ignoramous for not realising, or a dunce, or what other absolute drivel you called me - someone you don't even know.
You really have no idea. Whatsoever. Perhaps it was in poor judgement to express how pissed of I was with this entire thing, and call Ethan an emotional trainwreck. Sorry, but he is, in my opinion. He's 19, and hasn't learned from his mistakes that he makes over and over.
I didn't say I was "all-knowing". I didn't say I had a vast "wisdom and comprehension of the human psyche" either. All I said was, my time on the Ledge doesn't have anything to do with life-experience. Although, putting words in other people's mouths really shows off your maturity, doesn't it?

this thread isn't about a problem like a divorce, divorce is just an excuse to introduce the whole cheap drama...i give a f*ck about what people tell about their lifes, i just say that u can't complain when people comment and all that btching about past relationships is unrespectful when other people have real problems, like for example, a divorce. when ethan talks about it, i will be the first one to give him my support.

Before Ethan comes back and begs Y'all To Stop Fighting About Him, I'm telling you now- stop fighting about him. It is not important. And Liam really, coming to this thread to defend him is ridiculous and you know it. It's an excuse to start something with posters you obviously have other issues with. Let it go.
Reactions to life's experiences are relative. What's horribly stressful for one may not be such a big deal to someone else. The suffering I see every day in my work makes the bickering on this board seem humorous and trivial. Let. It. Go.

I could give less of a **** about how people speak to me 'cause of my age, unless it's condescending, like you're being now. My age has nothing to do with this. You're two or three years older than me? My maturity, however is greater than yours times about a million. You must seriously have the biggest inferiority complex going. I pity the fact you still use arguments like "I've posted much more than you". Maybe you have, but the fact the vast majority is obnoxious remarks doesn't make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. Oh, and referring to your first post - I've known about Fleetwood Mac since I was tiny. 15 years or so? Yep, that just shows who really is the ignoramous around here.
By the way, a point is an "opinion or fact". None of what you spoke was fact, but instead it was an attack. Don't pretend that you had good intentions, really.

I guess I'm insensitive. I've been through a HELL of a life. When I say hell I mean it. Sorry if I'm not compassionate about girl problems and divorce.
Once Ethan tries growing up experiencing emotional abuse, watching physical abuse, going through a life threatening illness and almost dying as a result (twice), being told you are a mistake, and various loads of other bull**** that I don't think is APPROPRIATE TO SHARE WITH STRANGERS ON AN INTERNET MESSAGEBOARD....only after he goes through this, will I give him an ounce of sympathy.

And for this very reason, I am not remotely ashamed at my "shamelessness" - although how I could be crestfallen because of this I'll never know when according to what you've said I'm basically evil - "intolerance and insensitivity". There's no reason for me to have any compassion for Ethan, considering he's more of a drama queen than any 13 year old girl could hope to be.
Also, I'm pretty sure Shawna and Marina are older than you. Which means, your patronising manner is completely pointless. You're actually going through your mid-life crisis about 35 years early, congratulations! :D

From my impartial, objective take on this ****storm of a thread, I have concluded that everyone is missing the point. I don't think Ethan is intentionally whining about his parents divorcing or some chick ignorning him in an effort to evoke pity. I think what he is really trying to communicate (albeit not very articulately or concisely) is his fear of becoming emotionally dead inside, i.e., building up an emotional barrier and becoming distant from people in his life. It wasn't a pleasant read by any means, but I suppose he has a right, as a young adult, to share his story and then ask the world what this all means. Since he obviously does not have any close confidents that he feels comfortable sharing such intimate knowledge with, he probably felt comforted by the anonymity of the Ledge and hoped to compare notes with others who may have been in his situation. Obviously it didn't pan out as expected! I don't think it was a competition over who has it rougher, nor was it a blatant attempt to evince sympathy or a cry for help. Admittedly he has engaged in rather narcisstic and/or annoying posting behavior in the past, but I don't think this is one of those episodes to get riled up about. If anything I think Ethan's biggest fault here was simply not being able to express himself well.
If nobody had anything constructive to say, I think this thread should have died a quick, painless death on its own. The personal attacks were unnecessary.

this is my last post in this thread. even if i'm called names, insulted or whatever, i won't take a part in this nonsense anymore. the remedy is being worse than the problem itself, and i think we are cooperating with something i find obscure an boring as egocentrism (it is ok when someone is the sh*t, like an artist or something).
i already said what i think and i want to spend the rest of my time on this board discussing interesting stuff, like the FM, LB, SN or enjoying the chit chat as a way to get to meet nice people, because I am sure most of the users are worth to be known. and i am saying this from the experience.
so if anybody wants to get more attention, i suggest they might start a personal board, or a blog or whatever. this way, there won't be any reason to criticize any self-centered attitude.
i hope u all are happy. i am, maybe my existence is not perfect, but i try to be in the right path. that's the most important thing, to be contented with the way u act and let the others be in peace :)

i find this rhetoric difficult to swallow.
i don't know you or your story. i want to make it clear that i'm not defending ethan, i'm just interested in addressing a broader issue you brought up.
in this situation you could justify being unsympathetic for a number of reasons. you could say ethan's irritating, or that he posts the same thing over and over again, or that he's fishing for attention. any of those would be defensible. but to turn it into a pissing contest about whose life is more difficult is silly and it makes you look petulant. that's the irony of indulging in this kind of oneupsmanship.
i have no reason to doubt that you've been through hell, but your experience is not the official standard unit of suffering, and to say that the only people who get your sympathy are those who have had it just as bad or worse than you've had it is just goofy.

I think JS's initial stance on protecting him, is much akin to Bush's stand on Iraq. There's no way he'll ever admit that he was wrong. No matter what.

I think your two cents are worth more than most peoples..........
The turmoil to some extent passes me by cos I don't read his threads.......unless I see there are over a hundred replies - then I'm as curious as other people:). What is frustrating is that there is no obvious attempt to moderate or control what he posts. I'm all for people posting some rubbish, I do myself on occasion. But seriously, there has to be a limit on the number of self indulgent threads that one member creates and when it is exceeded, the threads should be deleted in my view.

Ethan has been gone from this thread (as is the usual MO) long enough for everyone to stop bickering about it. Ethan is not creating the turmoil anymore, everyone else is. It amazes me (still) how Ethan can bring people out of the woodwork and that people really are calling each other names,as well as being judgmental and rude to one another based on this thread. I really didn't mind people telling Ethan how silly his story was. When you put your personal business up on a public message board, you're fair game. But the fact that now members are attacking EACH OTHER over it...this thread is getting tiresome.

How can we moderate that- if Ethan posts a self indulgent thread, is there somewhere in the Ledge rules that says I can delete it? As it stands now, I figure he can post them and people can respond (within REASON and within the rules) or just ignore him.

I could debate the inconsistent ways in which the ledge rules are applied all day but that would be tiresome and I have better things to do.
How about telling him that he can't create more than one thread a week or that he can't create the same thread within a year of posting a similar one?

Obviously the first one is out of the question, as it would have to apply to everyone. The second one, I can get behind. What I could do is merge the new post with an old thread and ask him (and everyone) to please remember to find their old threads and bring them back to life rather than starting a new one. The problem there is that the subject matter is still going to irritateand offend, and Ledgies are still going to respond.
I'm going to say this and if it makes me a "bad" moderator, oh well. I can't STAND Ethan's posts. If I were not a moderator for the forums he spends so much time in, I would have him on ignore. I bite my tongue and suck it up and try not to encourage him to post further either by complimenting him OR criticizing him. I can't believe people are saying that because they have had worse things happen to them in their lives that he's not allow to complain about his (relatively) small problems.
I never said he wasn't allowed to complain. A small, random post would suffice. His consistant 500-1000 word posts about this girl and that girl are terribly annoying. He's been told time and again, and he doesn't give a ****. I feel bad for him about his folks divorcing, but I don't think that's the huge issue to him here... it was a gateway to start in about "boy didn't get girl". I've held my tongue about his postings for years, and for me, personally, people who whine and complain about petty **** need to be told there are worse things to complain about. Everyone's had something go bad in their lives, but do we keep hashing and rehashing these things on an internet message board? Healthyminded people will find someone to talk to in real life, figure out the problem, or come to terms with it, and count other blessings. In hindsight, I suppose right now these are the worst things to him, but then, to go on and on about the same subjects over and over again warrants professional help. We are not the people, and this is not the place.

it's like the lyrics to a Joni Mitchell song (The Circle Game), "and the seasons-they go round and round." This sort of discussion is re-occuring, the same reactions, the same advice, the same sympathy, the same outrage. I see my same response in two other similar threads by you, Ethan:
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpost.php?p=826424&postcount=3
Many folks have given you the same advice. Before, now . . . but it's not clear if you follow it, or if you just use The Ledge to emote. Emoting is fine, but then you have to expect a response from members of The Ledge, as they are intended to read it. It's an open message board. Who are your messages to? Who do you think your reader is? What do you want the reader to do in response to your writings? Is it possible the girl in question has read your comments? It's a public place, and your first and last names have appeared here. Everyone googles.
Ethan,
Was your package to Cheryl ever delivered?

ABSOLUTELY. But you three should be ASHAMED for your blatant shamelessness, insensitivity and intolerance.
um excuse me that was a little bit rude.
And the "I've been here longer than you & have more posts" argument? If that gives anyone any clout, you should be bowing at my feet little boy. Doesn't mean ****.
Let. It. Go.
Very true. I want to make it clear that I don't want to trivialize Ethan's experiences. But if he (or anyone else) asks for advice & they get the advice of "too bad, suck it up" then that's OK. People shouldn't freak out & rush to protect him.
Who the "FUKC" do I think I am?
I guess I'm insensitive. I've been through a HELL of a life. When I say hell I mean it. Sorry if I'm not compassionate about girl problems and divorce.
Once Ethan tries growing up experiencing emotional abuse, watching physical abuse, going through a life threatening illness and almost dying as a result (twice), being told you are a mistake, and various loads of other bull**** that I don't think is APPROPRIATE TO SHARE WITH STRANGERS ON AN INTERNET MESSAGEBOARD....only after he goes through this, will I give him an ounce of sympathy.
I'm not out for sympathy and attention. Unlike some other veteran posters.
If you'll excuse me, I'll go be "crestfallen".
not.
I need to agree with some other posters in saying this isn't a contest about who's had it worse. The fact that you feel that you've had a tougher life than Ethan doesn't mean he can't feel bad about what's happening in his life. Someone who went through the Holocaust had it worse that you did, but that doesn't mean your experiences weren't awful for you.
But I must agree with the parts of your statement I bolded. Many people here post very intimate, personal details about their lives. In the past, sexual issues have come up, illnesses, lists of medications people take, mental health problems,,,the list goes on. People are free to share what they want to. BUT, when they do, they need to be prepared for the consequences, especially if they ask for opionions or advice.
Some people might make fun of you.
Some might think you're disgusting.
Some might judge you.
Some might think you deserve whatever happened to you.
Some people might think you're a psycho.
Some might hate you.
Some might call you names.
It's each person's decision how much they want to put out there. If you only want compliments & coddling & postive thoughts & comments, this is probably not the place. Go start a blog.
so if anybody wants to get more attention, i suggest they might start a personal board, or a blog or whatever. this way, there won't be any reason to criticize any self-centered attitude.
There ya go.
Great post. :wavey:

i think the "ethan" threads get so heated, that everyone thinks it's fair game to start venting about things that bother them about each other. ethan is just the platform that allows it all to go down. I was stuck in a long line at the market the other day. The cashier was a numnutz, apparently. So I just blamed Ethan! I was ready to KILL him, as I watched my ice-cream sandwiches melt.
Ethan, I think you troll the board. It's nothing to be ashamed of -- I myself troll the Ledge frequently. The point is to troll entertainingly. This is not Twitter or Twatter (or whatever they call it).

Honestly it's when people start telling each other how stupid they are and to fkcu off that it becomes a problem!
Sorry I missed your reply - I'm in prison! :)- to clarify I'm rebuilding one rather than being incarcerated myself. The reply is helpful - thanks.

And, did you read my post? I never used that argument to validate my point. I used that fact to justify senior posters getting pissed at Ethan.

was this post intended to be a complete non sequitur? cuz it doesn't really make any sense in relation/reaction to what i said ... sarcastically ... to a friend ... who is not you.
am i supposed to feel bitchslapped?
just let me know how i should feel, since your heavy handed attempt to sound esoteric has resulted in my not being able to follow your logic, were any present.
Whoops. Forgot all about this thread. Umm... no it wasn't a bitch slap, it was a complete joke.

Yeah, I got it. People who have been here longer don't have more of a "right" to be annoyed with Ethan than newcomers. He can annoy everyone equally.
