Ok so I wake up yesterday morning and theres this message on my phone from fraud detection servies for my bank, Accociated Bank, saying that there was unusual activity on my account. So I call the people up and sure enough I thought I had $700 in my account, well, miss automated computer voice said my account was $400 OVERDRAWN! I get on the Line and there were 2 charges at some place called Lord and Taylor which Ive never heard of in New Jersey. One was for $800 and the other $300. I almost dropped the F***ING phone! Plus they tried to do another charge for $500 but that one was denied thank god! The good news is I called Fraud Services and they immideately cancelled my card, which is only a bank checking account debit Mastercard anyway, and I went to the bank and filled out a couple forms and the money should eb credited back into my account in a couple days. But I mean COME ON, I mean right before Christmas?!?!:shocked: I just thank god I had gotten all my Xmas shopping done! am very happy though how everyone, from the fraud people to my personal banker handled everything. You really realize how much you appreciate doing business with a good company when something bad happens and they come through like that. Oh and one more thing, the fraud dude told me only my card # was compromised, not my account. Have any of you ever had anything like this happen to you and if so, what was the outcome?

I have had this before. My card number was compromised from an old card that I has previously stopped because I lost it. However, this didn't happen and several months later that card was used over the weekend cfor £5000 of online transactions! There were flights all over the world! It took days for all of them to show up on my statement.
They did it over the weekend because, technically, this could have been me and I could have rushed into the bank first thing monday morning and deposited enough cash to cover all of it. These people know what they're doing.
I called the bank and they were great about it. They knew immediately that it wasn;t me from looking at my account history. What they advised me was to wait until all of the transactins had come off my account and then they would refund my account with the £100 that had originally been in there (my money) and that this would not effect my credit rating at all. This is exactly what happened.
So, this happened at the weekend and II had no access to cash until the following Thursday when it was all sorted. In the meantime though, my mortgage and other direct debits were due to come off. The bank said not to worry and that they would refund any charges I incurred for missed payments - and they did.
It was very stressful at first but once I know that I wasn't liable and it would be sorted it actually became really funny/ridiculous to look at my statement every day and see these crazy transactions!
Surely they must have caught the people who did it. I mean, you have to proide a name for a travel ticket!

someone attempt to illegally take funds from my checking account awhile ago (The amount they TRIED for was $1100) but I never keep more than about $300 in it, so this person never received the funds and all I lost was my debit card (Whoever they were, they TRIED to hack my debit card, but being that I DON'T live in Africa my bank caught the fraudulent charge very quickly.)
Nothing in the world I hate more than a THIEF!

i had somebody steal my husband's debit account number somehow and buy $170 worth of pizza last year and i remember we had to go to the bank and fill out a form and it took a few months to get our money back. i remember i was so annoyed because i really needed that money. we never found out how his numbers were stolen but now when we go to a bar we use our credit card to start a tab because we noticed that most bars put leave the credit cards out in the open even though they are behind the bar. anybody that works there could easily have access to anybody's credit card. its scary stuff though! i hope everything works out well for you!!

Over the summer, someone had some fun with my debit\mastercard. I called my bank for something else, and that's how I found out. They over-nighted a new card to me, credited my account like within a day, and mailed me the forms to fill out. Case closed right? Wrong last week the same thing happened. I am now convinced that this information was stolen from my computer. Scary sh!t! Once again they credited my account and over-nighted a new card. The bank I'm dealing with has been great about everything. The purchaces that were placed were all from other countries, and all internet purchaces that I never even heard of. Just try to be aware I guess. You can never be to careful.
I've never anything like this happen to me (knock wood), but one of my sisters has had it happen to her twice. Once someone used her debit card number (an employee where she had her hair done) & recently someone stole her credit card number. She just happened to check her balance on-line & saw some charges from NY, $100 here, $200 there. She called the bank who issued her card & immediately had her card closed. She's only responsible for the first $50. Now my dad has been scared of this type of thing for years & he got rid of ALL his credit cards. He uses Paypal for everything on-line. I still use my credit card which he thinks is a dangerous thing. Of course, if it ever happens to me, I'll never tell him. :o

Hey David! Long time no see. Sorry to hear of this unfortunate situation! I hope everything is taken care of and that it never happens again... it must be a scary thing...
Lord and Taylor is a department store. My grandmother (who lived in New Jersey) used to get all of my Christmas and birthday gifts there.

Good to hear the bank took care of the matter.
This happened to me as well, but not for the amounts that your account was charged.
I found out that many of these scammers use a random number generator to generate the last 12 digits of a card. You are probably aware that most credit and debit cards use the same first string of four digits. That makes it a bit easier for the criminals.
They try these generated numbers out by making very small purchases on-line. Sometimes totaling less than a couple of dollars just to see if the card hits. They may then continue to make modest purchases as they did with my card in hopes that you don't notice it either on your balance or even your statement if you don't go through it every month.
Unfortunately, as in your case, they hit you hard with a couple of large charges all at once.
Check your statement and see if there isn't a charge for under two dollars somewhere in the listings.
This is only one example of how criminals are able to obtain a valid credit card number.
