View Full Version : Potential Ledgie of the Month Award

Alright- I was reading through a House MD Board, and they had a thing called "Doctor of the Month". The administration selected a member a month who best followed the rules and displayed certain qualities and things- and I thought it was kind of a cool idea. Don't know how you all would feel about something like this, but I thought it might be a neat idea to throw out to you all!

Much Love,
Ethan

Sounds like a popularity contest... bad can of worms to open up. I'm not sure if I like rewarding perfection in etiquette and behavior either... I rather like pushing people's buttons, and seeing how everyone reacts. What the hell kinda fun is adhering to rules anyway???

Don't you think it's kinda funny that a board dedicated to House, a show about a doctor who stubbornly won't follow the rules and takes delight in provoking people, rewards following rules and conforming?

I think Ethan has brought up this idea of having a regular popularity contest a few times now.

How about an ANNUAL awards with 10-20 "catagories" . I.e. "Most Posts", "Dumbest Posts", "Threadkiller of the Year", "Threadstarter of the Year", "Thread Hijacker of The Year", "Most Tangents to thread subject", etc. Get 5 nominations per catagory, open up voting for a month.

Oh, and I'd gladly accept the nomination for "Lifetime Achievement".

Maybe it's just me, but I enjoy reading the thoughts of people who have something interesting to say rather than a bunch of posts that just say "I agree", "that's cool" or "let's have a monthly popularity contest" for the tenth time, in order to raise their post count.
Seriously though, I just think a monthly popularity contest is a bad, bad idea.

Seriously though, I just think a monthly popularity contest is a bad, bad idea. It's a good, good idea any time we implement a contest here that has the potential to sow dissension & discord, & to release pent-up & deep-seated animosity & perhaps even disgust among forum users. That's the sort of thing that keeps me entertained while I wait for tomorrow's broadcast of "Judge Judy."

I think mines set up to receive the first reply after a post from me here, anymore than that I have to visit the board to read all replies. Now from 7W my aol email could have 300 replies sometimes and I'll have to go delete my aol notifications one by one. It can get a little crazy sometimes.

I don't think I was around for all the drama between the Tribute bands. And gladly so. I don't even watch or get into any of that or think one is better than the other really. To me, this world's so big there's room enough for everyone to pay their own personal homage to Stevie without us ever feeling cramped or bumping into each other ever. I find it silly really when impersonators get so upset at one another over who's better. You're paying homage in your little corner of the world your way, and I'm paying homage in mine. That's just how I look at all that stuff.

I could see getting rid of any bad seeds or problem causers. But when people leave whom I feel actually contributed to a board and helped move it along daily with positive fresh ideas and posts, that is when it saddens me to see them go.

Yes, that was when I took my couple year hiatus from the Ledge. Everyone just went completely nuts... it was an online version of Mean Girls. The only reason I started posting again was because those self-congratulating "cool crowd" people left. A popularity contest wouldn't be good, but encouraging a culture of being pleasant with one another and acknowledging when someone makes us laugh or brightens up our day with their posts certainly would be.

Barbara & Ocie got into a big fight, & Michelle Tyler doesn't like fights, so she actually just shut down the entire Yahoo group (instead of kicking off the two offenders!).

Touche!

I truly have no problem with spirited discussion... I thrive on it actually:thumbsup:. But a couple of years back, it ceased being about the music on this board... and became one big pissing contest on who was "cool" and who fell into which clique. Stupid crap like that. And then it just got nastier and snippier. Now I'll vehemently debate with another person until the cows come home... but I will NOT be a part of the junior high school childishness that was so prevalent her a couple of years back. I come on here to debate the band I'm passionate about, and to try and expand mine and others minds. I guess some of those people back then didn't have lives outside of online message boards, but I sure do. And if I don't have patience for immature cliques, name calling, and gossiping in my REAL life I'm sure as hell not interested in participating in it on an online message board! :p

Come on Louie, you have to admit your posts going on about this are kinda gossipy and name-calling too. Personally, for me, I thought one of the worst eras of the board was the Arizona Ranger incident but we all have different perspectives I guess. I also think the board needs its LukeAs (smart and cool but can be rude as anything) as much as its Betsys (one of the sweetest posters ever). It keeps things interesting. The Ledge has always been known for being edgier and meaner than the other boards. Hell, I read the board but didn't join for over a year because I was scared of the people here and that was almost 10 years ago! Same old, same old really. Or all the same, as Stevie would say.

I'm only impatient and testy with those who lack common sense or who are otherwise obliviously obnoxious. I may seem opinionated/confident, but I can assure you that I always feel terrible if its apparent I was unduly harsh. I've befriended way too many people over the past 10+ years here for anyone to conclude I'm an unmitigated jerk.

Speaking in general terms, I have no patience for those who argue nonsense (things that don't fall into matters of opinion), and any forum worth its salt should condemn such comments as such. Personality conflicts tend to resolve themselves, provided they are between people with adult-level intelligence.

Come on Louie, you have to admit your posts going on about this are kinda gossipy and name-calling too.

But I've named no names, called no one out, hurt no feelings. I've always roped my posts on this subject back to the music too. All of this is the complete opposite of what I disliked about the '06-'07 era... when it was nothing but name calling, popularity contests and cliques, and the board seemingly ceased to be about the music. I've got no interest in cliques or popularity... I'm just here to talk about the band. The reason I responded to this thread in the first place was because I felt it was the beginnings of this board heading back down the wrong path and becoming a divisive place again. I like this board. I like the people who are currently here. I like the current atmosphere. I like all of the varied viewpoints. I think creating "Ledgie of the Month" and stuff like that could quickly erode the good thing this board has going for it, and to shift the focus away from why we're all here in the first place. Anyway, I'll gladly do my part and bow out of this thread now :wavey:.
