Ok, so do any of you have a Stevie song you like that is really super bad? Or maybe one that's just wildly unpopular?

Ok, I'll admit it... I like Alice :o. From it's corny calliope esque sound, to Kenny G's awesomely bad saxophone solos, and Stevie's ultra foggy tranquilized lyrics... I freaking love it all! I've always had a problem really pinpointing what exactly about this song I like. It's more than the sum of it's terrible Adult Contemporary parts. Despite all of it, I guess "it's just a feeling"... it's a thoroughly-Stevie escapist song, and that's probably why I like it. It takes you to the other side of the mirror to the fairytale Stevie realm. And I think any of her songs that transport you there are ok by me.

It's reall up to you on how you grade Mama's songs. Some people think Street Angel is good others don't. In the end we all have our own tastes - and hey Stevie's not the only artist who has changed style and sound.

But, if i did have to choose - I would go The Nightmare :D (I know, I know - but think of that tune)

I guess the two that I really like that I've noticed a lot of people can't stand are Welcome To The Room Sara... and Silver Girl.

I like Silver Girl up until Stevie sings "She was a Golden Girl...."

I then get visions of Sophia, Dorothy, Blanche and Rose sitting at the table eating cheesecake.

Welcome to the Room...Sara - I think it's horrendously underrated, myself. I've always loved the spoken, 'this is a dream, right?' bit.

I actually like her version of "Just Like a Woman" (ducks). I think it's cute when she does those Dylan-esque affectations with her voice, and I like the fact that she really connects with the lyrics; she's not just simply going through it note-for-note. This is one song for which I will sing along. Every time.

The Nightmare. Most of you seem to hate this song, but not me, I LOVE it. Right off the bat from the opening music that seems to cascade down a ladder at you to her singing about the ivory morning which always reminds me of Tusk. And she paled in the wake of what some call a dream, but you cannot know a dream till you've known the nightmare. True, true, oh how true.
More Tusk album references: so about the moon and her sister's, how dare he take them prisoner. and then the cascading music that falls right after these words.

From a night persons perspective: blinded by the light of the day, ooh she has known the nightbird.......

I actually really like The Nightmare too. I especially like the verse:

Somewhere in her ancient ways, she walks through the night...

I guess because I can kinda relate to it. To me it's about being different, and not always liking the modern way of life... but still going nonetheless!

Is Running Through The Garden a guilty pleasure song ? (I know some people say that it's a horrible song.)

If it is, it would be mine ! NEVER DID I MEAN TO (never did I mean to) IMPRISON YOU (imprison youuu) ... I absolutely LOVE this song, and I'm going crazy when I hear it :).

Oh God. Now I'll never be able to listen to this song again without that image coming to mind.

It's just like with Beautiful Child. Someone commented on the, "You say it will be harder in the morning" line. I haven't been able to listen to it seriously since.

I'm not even ashamed to say I like most of the Street Angel album! I love it's straightforward back to basics rock and roll style... just what she needed to do after the impossibly airy fairy Other Side Of The Mirror. Most everybody around here seems to hate Love Is Like A River... which is one of my all time favs. Such an angry rocking powerhouse of a song! Love, love, love it!!!

I totally, totally, totally agree!!!!

Except I would go even further and say that The Other Side Of The Mirror was trying hard to be "airy fairy", but didn't even quite make that!

Not that these are guilty pleasures for me personally, I love these songs and would defend them to the death (and often do!):

When I See You Again

Welcome To The Room... Sara

Jane

BUT... as for When I See You Again, it has to be the outtake version where Stevie sings all the lead vocals and it has all the extra "whatsamaddahbabies". I cannot stomach the version on the album where Lindsey sings at the end. I love Lindsey to death, I really, really do (I have all his albums and have seen all his tours, I even saw him on the OOTC tour), but he always has to mark his territory and put his "vocal stink" on everything like a male cat in a forest. His vocals are always on Stevie's and Chris' songs (except maybe one... Songbird?), yet their vocals are not always on his.

i bow down to your great insight
I like Mirror because of it's airy fairy-ness
it's Stevie being a Barbie princess and living in her fairytale land
it is a nice escapism and i probably like it because it's not rock and roll
it's just different

Street Angel on the other hand ... could have been a killer piece of work

what's not to love about... You can't say no in the middle of the night :D

i think you're uptight lady. outta sight outta sight baby

it needs to be played LOUD

Anything too 80s is considered a guilty pleasure for me-- all of Rock a Little and The Other Side of the Mirror. I agree with "The Nightmare," and also "Long Way To Go."

This made me laugh, although on that song she said he didn't even want to do it and she is the one who took her vocal off and left his on. She said he would have been too shy to close the song on his own. Stevie said it was her that would grab him and have him sing on Christine's songs a lot of the time too.

I don't know that he's all that shy, but When I See You Again doesn't seem to be the type of song he'd be into anyway. I bet he would have been glad not to sing on it. Angel is a different story. You could see from the clips that he was excited about that and wanted to sing on it, asking for the lyrics that Stevie hadn't even planned on giving him. Michele

Yeah, RAL and OSOTM are so guilty pleasure it's ridiculous. But I have a thing for over the top 80's music so it's all good!

I think my faves would have to be I Can't Wait, (this has to be considered guilty pleasure, right??), If I Were You, Ooh My Love, Welcome to the Room.. Sara.
