So, I've come across a lot of cover songs in the past, but most of them suck. So I was wondering what covers have yall heard that are actually good?
I'd say Ari Hest's cover of "Little Lies" is my favorite.
And then some guy on YouTube covered Stand Back, and I like the way he changed it up and did an acoustic version of it.

I just recently watched Ari Hest's cover of Little Lies and I actually loved what he did with it even though I usually believe you don't mess with gems or masterpieces, and leave well enough alone. It was a new take on that song and something Lindsey and Stevie could do up on stage, toned down and simplified just like Ari's version (since Chris isn't there). I think that would sound great and totally surprise us fans and most of us would fall over from hearing the song.

I have not liked, generally, any Fleetwood Mac covers that I've heard.
The Cranberries version of GYOW wasnt too bad... and I liked some of the stuff on Camper Van's version of Tusk

See I never thought the Cranberries sounded good live. And that's only from watching them on tv ever. You don't think Stevie and Lindsey could do a stripped down version of Little Lies like Ari Hest did and it go over well with fans? Cause I do. I think it'd be a hit with them!

Not really, because it's a Christine McVie vocal. ;)

One of the worst was Wilson Phillips cover of GYOW. It was way too happy and "pretty". It lost all of its intensity!
People will probably get on me for this, but I did actually like Billy Corgans' version of Landslide. I know alot of people didn't though. It's just me! *waits for the pie-throwing!!*lol

True, and all the more reason they should do it exactly as Ari Hest had done. A stripped down vocal of them two just singing Little Lies for us. I think the fans would go wild and we'd still get to hear the song, cause it looks like Chris isn't coming back anytime soon. I think Stevie and Lindsey could pull it off well. And it would probably sound better stripped down, than the full instrumental live version they used to do (with Christine).

I love that cover version. It's by far the best song on the Legacy album and I still listen to it regularly. For a great Mac cover though then check out Nora O'Connor's version of That's Alright from her album 'Til The Dawn. Also Sara Watikins' Steal Your Heart Away.

This guy has a real nice voice. He is Barratt Waugh singing "Songbird".

Does anybody have a cover of Rhiannon sung by an Asian woman? You can tell she probably doesn't speak English. I used to have it and another version of Rhiannon before my computer crashed a while back.

I disagree. I don't think Stevie and Lindsey have pulled off any of Christine's songs (pulled them off well anyway). Just my opinion though. ;)

I won't get on you for it. Billy singing that song is one of the things that got me into the Mac so I adore it. Smashing Pumpkins got me through my teenage years so I had trust in Billy that he was on to something. ;)

I wonder what the biggest cover was? I reckon it was [I]Black Magic Woman[I] when it was covered by Santana. Most people recognise it as his song.

Either that, Judas Priest's Green Manalishi, or Eva Cassidy's Songbird. I've gotten a fair amount of grief over the years for my dislike of anything and everything Eva Cassidy. I absolutely cannot stand Eva Cassidy.
On a more positive note, I love Status Quo's Don't Stop and Black Crowes/Jimmy Page's Oh Well! Would have loved to have heard Robert Plant singing it!

 I love this cover. I'm a huge fan of Nickel Creek, and now Sara's solo stuff, too.
Also like the Smashing Pumpkins' Landslide, but I can't stand the Dixie Chicks version. Which is weird, cause I'm a bluegrass freak. I think they just missed the point of the song.

Btw, hi everybody, I'm new here, and also pretty new to Fleetwood Mac. Can't get enough of 'em at the moment, I've spent way too much time blasting the Tusk album and rolling around on the floor.
Anyhow, great place y'all've got goin' here. Very informative. :D

Better than the original, IMHO

I seriously doubt that any FMac cover has come close to the sales numbers of Santana's cover of BMW. Probably the Dixie Chicks' cover of "Landslide" would come in #2.
I've gotten a fair amount of grief over the years for my dislike of anything and everything Eva Cassidy.
And, from the tone of your post, the grief is well-deserved.

Hmmmm, Robert Plant singing "Oh Well"??? You mean their rewrite of "Oh Well" that turned into "Black Dog" doesn't suffice?? Just like the Beatles took "Albatross" and turned it into "Sun King".
Some of my fave FMac covers:
The Melvins - Green Manalishi
Annie McLoone - Spare Me A Little Of Your Love
Chaka Khan - Everywhere
KC & The Sunshine Band (?!?!?) - Don't Stop
Rod Stewart - Stand Back
Cyndi Lauper - You Make Loving Fun
Goo Goo Dolls - I Don't Want To Know
Kick Axe - The Chain
Rusty Wier - Don't Let Me Down Again (he also covered Lindsey's "Lola (My Love)" and Stevie's "Think About It" on the same album)
Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson - Gold Dust Woman
Pamela Stanley - Rhiannon
Matchbox 20 - Never Going Back Again
Pointer Sisters - Hypnotized
the aforementioned Eva Cassidy - Songbird

I know I'll get a lot of flack for this, but I actually halfway like Lohan's version of Edge... to me the production is more in line with the subject matter of the song. Stevie's version seems to be made a harder edged rock song for the sake of the album having a harder edged rock song. I know Paul Fishkin and Jimmy Iovine wanted to throw Stevie's airy fairy image out the window and prove she was just as much of a rocker as a man for her debut album. To me, Edge was a casualty of this policy.
I actually don't mind Wilson Phillips Go Your Own Way either. It was a wholly new take on the song... and I respect that. The layered harmonies are very Fleetwood Mac. And I detest Wilson Phillips... so it takes a LOT for me to admit I like their version of GYOW .
I really like Matchbox Twenty's version of Never Going Back Again too, again, because it's such an entirely different take on the original. And it really works. I know Lindsey feels the song's subject matter is about coming out of the darkness, thus his prosaic approach to it on Rumours. But there's a definite dark undertone to the lyrics, which Matchbox Twenty totally cashed in upon. I like it!

Yes, I agree. Lindsey claims that he meant finding joy and never going back to that pain again. I don't think the lyrics necessarily say that. Matchbox Twenty says never going to put myself in a position to be hurt again and their arrangement has a detached, robotic tone that brings that sentiment to life. I like hearing the hard shell that forms when you've been hurt once too often. I like Rob's voice. I want Lindsey to work with him.

I'm really surprised you know who he is! I thought he was just a local Austin attraction. He actually lived around the corner from me in Austin when I was a kid. I had no idea he did those covers... I'll have to track them down!

This board is great for learning something new about F Mac! I never knew that Cyndi Lauper covered You Make Loving Fun. I need to go look for that!
I love both Tori Amos's and The Dixie's Chicks' version of Landslide. I hate most of that Rumours cover CD.
But, I heard a great version of I Know I'm Not Wrong. I posted about it in another place, but I should have put that post here! They are called the 1900's and below is a link to them doing it live. I'm still trying to get the version their studio version that I heard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pWcVFAQfmY
Also, Tom Petty does a live version of Oh Well on his new 4 disc live Anthology collection. I kind of like it.
Finally, Lucy Wainwright Roche does a decent cover of Everywhere.
How about a thread where we talk about who we would like to cover some Mac songs????
I'd love to hear ...
Dolly Parton do That's Alright
Patty Griffin do Storms
Teddy Thompson do Love in Store
Counting Crows do Save Me a Place
Mary Chapin Carpenter do Honey Hi
Heart do Smile at You
OK, I'm off to hunt down Cyndi's YMLF!

Some channel (TV ONE, I think) has a musician biography series called Unsung, which is really good. The subjects are usually lesser-known black artists and groups. Anyways, I just watched one on Melbe Moore, which led me to do some searching where I found that she covered "Dreams" on a 1985 album. I really want to hear it!

It's true that I think this band can do little/no wrong, but I love Steel Train's cover of "Tusk". Doesn't vary too heavily from the original but has a nice ST stamp on it. Love the drums and Jack Antonoff's take on the vocals doesn't disappoint.

Oh, sorry, just noticed your reply. I actually have an audio of a live concert, great quality, where they do both! I'll hafta get that uploaded and then send ya the link. It's a two parter, like 30 minutes apiece, so ya gotta jes' sit through the whole concert for them, but it was a great show. Did an insane version of House Carpenter and some gorgeous harmony on All This Time before Sara recorded it for her solo album. Good stuff.
As for a cover I'd wanna hear.. uh, I'm not very imaginative, so I'll go with yet another cover of That's Alright.. by She & Him! Love their first album, and That's Alright is a kinda obscure FM song from the Rumours line-up, so they could pretty much avoid any negative comparison.

Thanks :). But I won't buy a Pointer Sisters' CD just to listen to a Fleetwood Mac song, so I guess I'll never hear it.
It's the only Pointer Sisters album I own...or WOULD own...the whole album is great. They also cover Bruce Springsteen's "Fire", Redbone's "Come & Get Your Love", Loggins & Messina's "Angry Eyes", the Doobie Bros' "Echoes Of Love", Sly Stone's "Everybody Is A Star", Stephen Stills' "As I Come Of Age" and Steely Dan's "Dirty Work"....the CD even has a couple of bonus tracks.

Yessssss. The Melvins are awesome.
In case anyone hasn't heard it, I rustled it up on teh YouTubes fer ya:

I also love this guy covering "Dreams" and I don't even really like "Dreams" all that much. But I could listen to him do it all day:

He is awesome.
Also, I'm glad to see someone posted Tori's cover of "Landslide," but it's the oddest thing for me. I am a major Tori fan, and I usually adore her covers - I think she has an incredible knack for taking someone else's song and paying tribute to it respectfully while still making it totally her own - but I can't quite get behind the "Landslide" cover. But then, I am not sure what would be a better Mac/Stevie song for her to cover, either.

Here's John Frusciante's version of Songbird. I like it, but I actually LOVE John Frusciante, he's my favorite artist after Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks. He also covered Landslide, with Bob Forrest (not great, though).

I like it!
ITA. The song is very bitter in its undertone. If it really is about moving on out of the darkness, why is it addressed to his ex, flinging his new relationship in her face? "YOU don't know what it means to win... so come on down and see ME again..."
Plus, the integration of The Chain is brilliant, as is Rob Thomas' anguished vocal.

On NGBA, Rob Thomas' voice has a mechanical sound. It easily belongs to someone who feels alienated and distanced, whose been hurt, cut himself off from emotion and really is never going back again.
It works very well and I'd love Lindsey's thoughts on it. Michele

- I think Sister Hazel's Gold Dust Woman is just awesome. Their performance of it reminds me a lot of a live version of "I'm So Afraid" with its power and pacing. Probably the best F-Mac cover, as far as I'm concerned.
- I also like Tonic's "Second Hand News" because it amps up the power at the end of the song. I always felt like SHN is great but it needed something extra, this cover did it for me. I feel like most of the song we're driving around a neighborhood and then when the end comes we merge onto the highway, haha. Tonic was such an underrated band, now almost trapped in the one-hit-wonder category!
- Matchbox Twenty's "NGBA" and Goo Goo Dolls "I Don't Wanna Know" work really well because they change the emotional delivery of the song. They're both songs with dark content but are delivered so casual and upbeat that they don't really make sense to me -- but the cover versions tap into the right vibe.
I have a live version of "Dreams" by Whiskeytown which is VERY good - but the one I see on I-Tunes doesn't live up to it. Don't remember how I came across mine though, so that doesn't really help in this discussion :-)

Despite her unfortunate choice to wear formal shorts, that was pretty good.
Perhaps more unfortunate, though, was my stupid idea to check out what other stuff that show might have, and got this cover of "When Doves Cry" for my troubles:

So, I've come across a lot of cover songs in the past, but most of them suck. So I was wondering what covers have yall heard that are actually good?
I'd say Ari Hest's cover of "Little Lies" is my favorite.
And then some guy on YouTube covered Stand Back, and I like the way he changed it up and did an acoustic version of it.
I love this! He performed a very tasteful arrangement of the song. Great voice too. Is he a recording artist? I've never heard of him.

I agree. Unfortuntately, they really don't think that way.

I just found this cover of That's Alright.
Kinda what it'd sound like if Patsy Cline could've covered it.
I commend them for covering the song, and the way it was arranged. The band was good, but the vocals were horrible. That girl doesn't know how to sing or perform.

Didn't notice the bass player, that is awesome! I expected him to sing Christine or Lindsey's part of the chorus since they're the highest... as for the histrionics, you're basically guaranteed them every time Adam opens his mouth(Life on Mars? not included) :p I like 'em though!

Res, a musician i like quite a bit for her song "They Say Vision" did an EP called "Refried Mac" where she covered a handful of Fleetwood Mac's hits and a Stevie song (Eo17)....
now, usually i'm not the biggest fan of "covers" - but i really liked it because it was a pretty different rendering/interpretation and i felt like it kept with the root of what the songs were. so, i thought i'd post some of her live performances of it here!

"Shee ruleserr lyfe lika berd in flyte.."
While it's definitely not the same (and in no way better) than Stevie's performance, I've always liked Waylon's version. He does a very credible take on Bob Seger's "Turn The Page" on the album of the same name.
He also covered "Gold Dust Woman" on the original "Waylon & Willie" album, I think Willie does backing vocal on that one but not sure. I know it's not a duet.
Willie covered Christine's "Songbird" a couple of years ago and it was a totally different arrangement. Not saying it was the best thing I ever heard, but it was interesting at the very least. I like it, but it's not one of my favourite things to listen to.

Also, Tom Petty does a live version of Oh Well on his new 4 disc live Anthology collection. I kind of like it.
Finally, Lucy Wainwright Roche does a decent cover of Everywhere.
How about a thread where we talk about who we would like to cover some Mac songs????
I'd love to hear ...
Dolly Parton do That's Alright
Patty Griffin do Storms
Teddy Thompson do Love in Store
Counting Crows do Save Me a Place
Mary Chapin Carpenter do Honey Hi
Heart do Smile at You
OK, I'm off to hunt down Cyndi's YMLF!

[Kool Kovers blog 3/15/2014, by Bill Sammon About Kottke's cover of World Turning]
http://koolkovers.blogspot.com/2014/03/world-turning.html
Another artist who feels a kinship with unusual rhythms is the widely acknowledged master of the 12 string guitar, Leo Kottke. I first heard his astounding work in the early 70's, in an ad for a show he was playing at a local Folk-oriented coffeehouse in suburban Philadelphia known as The Main Point. Kottke's guitar playing sounded to me like it was everywhere, yet right there at the same time. His technique and skill were such that the sound he created was nothing short of arresting.
Much of Kottke's work is instrumental, though he has recorded many noteworthy vocals. His discography is extensive, to say the least, and is spread out over multiple decades and record labels. The concept of compiling a cross-label, comprehensive boxed set of Leo's recordings would be daunting. Nonetheless, Leo is the rare sort of skilled musician where the popularity of one of his recordings over another is a poor barometer of the quality contained therein. There's plenty of gold to be found.
As a comparison to Kottke's seeming reluctance to sing, which can be construed as his saying that his instrument is more eloquent than himself, Kottke's music is its own best definition. Leo Kottke is best heard, rather than described second hand, as attempts at description of his music are often futile. Suffice it to say, as I already have, that he is a master musician. If you enjoy acoustic music at all, and acoustic guitar in particular, you owe it to yourself to look into the world of Leo Kottke.
From Leo's 1997 album, "Standing In My Shoes", here is his version of "World Turning". Enjoy.
