Wow, that was impressive....

Although, was it just me, or did anyone else get kind of annoyed when she said "this is for you daddy" at the beginning of this???? I don't know, but it didn't sit too well with me, and kind of turned me off. But she does have the look down pat!

So THAT'S what she would look like with a rack. Interesting.:D

If she can get the voice down, she could be the main attraction at Night of 1000 Stevies.

Alright, I watched this again, and did anyone notice the 1:06- 1:10 mark? Looked EXACTLY like Stevie!

I thought the Stand Back was the weakest song musically.

Speaking of that performance, am I the only person who thinks Stevie freakin rocked it? Many people, including herself, hated the Street Angel era, but looking back it seems like she was still on top of her game.

I freaking LOVE her Street Angel performances! It's like she came out breathing fire after spending nearly a decade on Klonopin, and like she felt she had to make it up to her fans for gaining weight, and putting out what she felt like was a subpar album. I still kick myself for not going to see that tour (I saw the Time lineup of FM instead ). That tour was one last glimpse of that Rock A Little and pre-Betty Ford passion. Oh well, at least we have some clips on youtube .

I also didn't much care for the daddy dedication at the beginning...

I think she looks like Stevie at a certain time in her life...

The voice isn't TOO bad...I mean, it's a good voice but it isn't too bad in terms of strictly a Stevie impersonator...I've seen others whose voices are nowhere near as close in terms of the Stevie sound.

Uh, and one FM cover band that was around my local area, *cough* the "Stevie" in it had this weird bulging eye. LMAO. I couldn't go and see their show. I just couldn't.

As I recall she knocked the entire mic stand over that night.

She actually did that at the 3/5 Chicago show this year during I believe Stand Back. She was swinging her big red cape and it knocked the mic out of the clip. the funny part is Stevie was laughing and looking around like "roadies...are you going to fix this **** or what???" She eventually got the mic back in the clip herself but it was very funny to watch. Alicia was up front so she probably got a better view. :D

No, I don't think she was breathing fire in 1994. People go overboard with their descriptions; their memories are spotty or they're in a revisionist, adulatory mood.

In 1994 on tour, the big difference was that Stevie had vibrato in her singing once again, & she was able to hit & maintain pitch -- quite well, actually (so that the various a cappella bits worked properly). But she wasn't Rock a Littling. She was still big & lumbering. It's just that she could sing clearly & tonefully, so it was pleasurable hearing her again. She wasn't dragging her pitch south in that trumpetlike fashion that she had in 1989, 1990, 1991.

OH MY GOD!!! When she said "This is for you daddy" she really sounds like Stevie BUT I totally agree with you that she shouldn't have said that...because it's very personal for Stevie...but however, this impersonator is really good! The voice I agree isn't that great but she really looks like Stevie most of the time, particularly from a distance :D

Although the album wasn't her best, the tour was fantastic. I prefer the earlier version of Edge before she slowed it down like this. And "No Spoken Word" and "Talk To Me" on SA were fantastic! Some of her best!

I agree. It's too personal to imitate. I don't like that either.Yeah I think there's a fine line between having fun imitating and becoming too eerily similar that it puts people off. I think she does resemble an older Stevie now. I do not think with all the work in the world that she could ever have Stevie's voice. It's just not there and that's something one cannot change about themself. I give her props for at least trying and singing her own songs but I think she'd do better just lip synching and leave it at that. She does look the most like Stevie that I've seen out of everyone and I'll like her more if her hair was all hers. Stuff like that just gains extra points with me.

lilwing80

RoseGarden - I think she may be early to mid 40's. :-)

IMO, I think if you are going to be an impersonator, you should look and sound as closely like the person you are impersonating/paying tribute to as possible. At the same time, I must say, being that I am also one, in my time of doing this, I have grown to believe everyone of us has their own way of doing things, each have their own strengths and we all have our own interpretations. I do believe Julie to be one of the best. As impersonators, we all continue to grow and hopefully become better with time.... Believe it or not, there is a market out there, and there are many who do this for a living, and make a good living at it...not just as Stevie..but others too ... making people happy... That's the main reason I do it ...because to see people happy... that's the best thing...

It takes more than a resemblance to rock 'n' roll royalty to be a good tribute act

By: Carolin Vesely

AT a stage of life when most people have finally figured out who they are, Larry Cariou and Julie Myers adopted alter egos and inadvertently launched mid-life careers.

Cariou, 52, is a native Winnipegger who moved to Toronto at age 11. Myers, 50, grew up in Memphis and moved to Winkler two years ago to be with her new husband.

Both will be counting on Manitobans' love for a couple of middle-aged music icons when they perform their respective tribute acts this summer.

Cariou, an animator by trade, insists he had bushy sideburns, scruffy hair, a fondness for plaid shirts and a high-pitched, nasal voice long before he became the frontman of the Neil Young'uns, a Toronto-based Neil Young tribute band he founded with four friends from the animation and film industry about four years ago.

"I always kind of looked like him anyway. I'm Neil in the late '80s or early '90s, I think, although I'm starting to look more and more like him now. Gotta lose some weight," Cariou says with a laugh during a phone interview.

His friend's dad taught him to play guitar in high school, and when they got together with other musicians to jam, Young's tunes would inevitably pop up, along with songs by Bob Dylan and John Prine.

"We'd all play along and sing, and then whenever a Neil Young song would come along, they'd all sort of stop and look at me and go 'What the hell?' recalls Cariou, a father of three and nephew of Winnipeg-born theatre star Len Cariou.

"My natural singing voice is also very much like his. So I just have to 'Neil' it up a bit and there we go."

Music was never a professional goal, and he hadn't picked up his guitar for more than a decade when the opportunity to play arose at a party.

"All I could remember how to play was the Neil Young stuff," says Cariou. A friend, who was impressed by what he heard, encouraged him to form a tribute band.

The Neil Young'uns, who have a repertoire of more than 130 songs spanning Young's four-decade, cross-genre career, will play three shows in Winnipeg this month. The band will also make an appearance at the Victoria Beach Summer Winds Festival.

As for Myers, a performer since childhood, she'd already worked as a backup singer and dancer for the Las Vegas live celebrity tribute show Legends in Concert, and for Playboy's Girls of Rock and Roll when she decided to dye her hair, cut her bangs, amass a collection of gypsy gowns and long gloves and master the ethereal stylings of Fleetwood Mac rock goddess Stevie Nicks.

"The last six years, all I've done is study her and vocal-train and build my costume wardrobe and try to market the show. It's a full-time job," says the tribute artist known as Nearly Nicks.

Myers bears an uncanny resemblance to the artist, whom Rolling Stone magazine included on its list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. Shortly after they put up a website to sell T-shirts and merchandise, Myers and her husband, Winkler businessman Ralph Fehr, received a letter from an attorney warning them to stop using Stevie Nicks' image.

Meyers performs her Nearly Nicks act several times a year in the United States -- she missed Fleetwood Mac's May 13 concert at the MTS Centre because of a corporate gig in Florida -- but she also wants to tour in Canada, starting with her adopted hometown.

The brand-new steampunk-inspired show she's bringing to PW Enns Centennial Concert Hall in Winkler on Sept. 6 and 7 will take tribute artistry to a whole other level, she says.

"It's not just me and a bunch of guys standing on a stage singing Stevie Nicks songs. It's a full spectacle with lights and video. And the whole show is set in a dream state, so there are just all kinds of crazy possibilities," she says of Dreams: A Rock Fantasy, which will also showcase her band, Raff Haze Atlantis Airship (a.k.a. the Alchemist Symphony).

Her mother went to school with Elvis Presley, and her high school boyfriend was a Gene Simmons impersonator in a Kiss tribute band, so Meyers' performing path might seem somewhat preordained. But she says the work chose her.

After a fall from some scaffolding sidelined her dancing career at age 29, she spent most of her 30s in Florida, helping her mother care for her ailing father, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

"All the while, I was praying really hard to get back into show business," Meyers recalls.

She lightened her hair and got bangs to cover forehead wrinkles, she says, but soon people were stopping her on the street and in restaurants, asking if she'd pose for a photo.

Having grown up a "classic rock child," she knew and liked Fleetwood Mac's music, and while never a devoted Nicks fan, she saw all the attention she was getting as a sign and started to nurture her inner Nicks. Still, Meyers admits she had to challenge some of her own impressions about impersonators.

"I always thought the tribute artists were a little strange when I worked at Legends, especially the ones who were impersonating artists who are still alive," she recalls of her Vegas days. "I kept thinking, 'Why don't you just want to be yourself?'"

The tribute business has gotten a bad rap, Myers says, mostly because it got so saturated at one point that you couldn't walk down the street in Las Vegas without bumping into someone dressed like Elvis. But its profile has been raised among the performing arts in recent years, she adds, if only for economic reasons. Like the name suggests, in other words, Nearly Nicks is the next best thing to the real thing.

"A lot of people can't afford $300 to go see Fleetwood Mac. That's an expensive evening."

Myers points out that a big part of her act is to remind audiences that Nicks' talent and appeal extended well beyond the scope of a British-American rock band that just happened to put out one of the bestselling albums (1977's Rumours) of all time. Nicks, who launched her solo career in 1981 with the album Bella Donna, and was once deemed the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll by Rolling Stone, is still going strong at age 65. New York Magazine recently referred to her as the "Fairy Godmother of Rock."

"My goal is to have Stevie recognized as much as a solo artist as that girl from Fleetwood Mac," says Myers.

Nearly Nicks, you hit it on the nail, girl. We need to get those Lori and Sharona impersonators up to speed, but they are on their way. As previously stated, the first rule of thumb for a Stevie Nicks impersonator is to NEVER, EVER take to microphone off the stand. That is blasphemous! However, I have NEVER seen a Stevie Nicks impersonator who gets the look and mannerisms down as well as you. You rock!!

I live in Texas and we have our own version of The Stevie Nicks impersonator. Her name is Brooke Allison and she fronts a band called "NIGHTBIRD". Check our her website.

But she does have the look down. Almost eerily so. If you showed me a still shot, I'd probably think it was Stevie (not film, though, because I actually don't think her mannerisms are all that on point - she's actually doing a little too much, in my eyes. I guess I'm picky).

I think that if FLEETWOOD MAC should ever play a show on April 1st (April Fools Day), they should have NEARLY NICKS or one of these impersonators come out at the beginning of the set. She would be playing tambourine and harmonizing on "Second Hand News"..........THEN, see how long it would take the crowd to start throwing a fit........How long would it take mutiny to ensue????

Dreams: A Rock Fantasy comes to Winkler Morden Times

Thursday, September 5, 2013 2:04:09 CDT PM

It wasn’t the real Stevie Nicks on the phone, yet her voice, well, it was hauntingly familiar.

It was Julie Myers, and she was telling me the origin of her Nearly Nicks tribute act.

“I didn’t pick this life, it picked me,” she said from Winkler, where she moved two years ago to be with her husband, Ralph Fehr.

Myers, who grew up as an entertainer in Memphis, brings her new show Dreams: A Rock Fantasy to Winkler for performances this weekend on September 6 and 7.

She was a dancer and backup singer for Legends in Concert in Las Vegas, but that came to a sudden halt one night in the early 1990s in Lake Tahoe. She was working a show Girls of Rock and Roll when she was injured after falling off some scaffolding.

She had a lengthy recovery and spent much of her 30s in Florida, where she helped her mom care for her ailing father.

She missed the stage, though, and an idea came in the most unusual way after her father died.

She was at the airport in Florida and frantically trying to catch a flight to Memphis for her father’s memorial. Passengers and staff tried to help her, all the while thinking she was Stevie Nicks.

She caught the flight and eventually launched a career as Nearly Nicks.

“Then it started happening all the time. People were coming up to me in restaurants and asking to have their picture taken with me,” she said.

The idea took time to grow on her.

“I always thought the people who did the tribute stuff were weird,” she recalled of the Vegas shows. “And some of them really were weird. The Judy Garland one really thought she had the yellow brick road in her back yard, and some of the Elvises ...”

Closing in on her 50th birthday, Myers does several shows a year, mostly American tours.

A gig in Florida meant she wasn’t able to see Nicks and Fleetwood Mac Sunday at MTS Centre.

Fehr, who owns Elias Woodwork in Winkler, has been constructing a new stage that “will blow everybody’s mind,” Myers said.

She’s hoping to land more Canadian gigs, including one at Winkler’s P.W. Centennial Concert Hall in September.

“I love what I do,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun and if you’re going to be in the business, who better to tribute than the queen of rock and roll?”

And who better to do it than a woman whose mom went to high school with the king of rock and roll?

“It’s a family joke whenever we take mom out to dinner,” she said, adding they will guess how long it will take before their mom informs the server of her claim to fame.

“It doesn’t even matter if the waitress can’t speak English or doesn’t know who Elvis Presley is.”

It’s not easy to capture Nicks’ unique and powerful voice, especially when it has changed so much over the years, Myers said.

Nicks began her solo career in 1981 with the album Bella Donna and is in her 60s, but is going strong after overcoming a cocaine addiction.

“She’s lucky to have a voice and a life at all, so more power to her,” Myers said. “Stevie will never retire unless she is physically unable to walk on the stage.”

As for Myers, who was once chased near Times Square in New York by fans who thought she was Nicks, she’s content to have a regular life out of the spotlight.

“I wouldn’t want to be a rock star, I just want to play one,” she said with a chuckle.

Celebrity impersonators shine in new documentary film

By CHELSEA HUANG

One stranger's exclamation changed Shannon Michael's life forever.

"Oh my God, you look like Bret Michaels!"

A cheap wig and a few swipes of eyeliner later, a star was born.

"We get in the parking lot, and it was just like, 'Hey Bret get out of the car!' People were screaming. Some guy was like who would've thought Bret would be driving a PT Cruiser," he said.

Michaels (no relation to his famous counterpart) is just one of many celebrity impersonators finally getting their shot at the spotlight in a new documentary film.

"Just About Famous" takes a look on the overlooked side of celebrity -- the lookalikes who take advantage of the culture celebrity worship.

"People go crazy. They love seeing them, they love taking pictures and then Facebooking or tweeting about 'who' they just 'met.' It's both surreal and fascinating to be in their company," co-director Jason Kovacsev said.

With a "star-studded" cast that includes Elvis, Obama, Lady Gaga, Robin Williams and more, the film takes a trip into the enlightening -- and surreal -- life of impersonators as they enter one of the premiere celebrity tribute artist conventions.

Check out an exclusive clip starring Bret Michaels, Stevie Nicks, Robin Williams and Sean Connery above.

"Just About Famous" is now available on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon. Visit justaboutfamous.com for more information.
