View Full Version : Let's Talk About...KICK IT
...because I can't stop listening to it!
I finally bought Street Angel last weekend and I found the first listen sort of unfulfilling, but I stuck it in my car stereo anyway. The other night I was driving to meet some friends and Kick It came on...and the first verse and chorus kind of grabbed my heart and pulled it out of my chest. A pleasant analogy, I know. But you know when you totally miss how good a song is, and then in the right context, it totally makes sense? I was having lunch with my sister the other day and she was talking about the really vague idea of moving away at some point...and I always struggle between really wanting to tell her never to do that, and KNOWING that I love her enough that I want her to be happy, whatever and wherever. Anyway, the song was sort of inspiring to me...bittersweet, but positive.
I'm guessing for Stevie, this was sort of half about relationships that didn't work out and half about drugs. Oddly, this one doesn't strike me as being about Lindsey (this goes against my typical response that EVERYTHING is about Lindsey...go figure).
Tell me more...

Kick It was the first song from Street Angel to really grab me as well :). It's just good, straightforward rock and roll. I believe the song to be about comparing unhealthy relationships to other addictions... and how she needs to kick the habit of whichever relationship she was in at the time. It's an interesting way to look at love, especially given the context of the times. This one came out 15 years before Rihanna's Rehab, which is a similar concept. Overall, it's a great little song. Congrats on joining the darkside and buying Street Angel. As more time passes, you'll find you like the album more and more... there's really some good stuff on there!

I love Kick It.
Catchy too - how she uses a phrase associated with getting off a drug or overcoming a habit to parallel a love relationship. She becomes a little more specific in her writing here - a little more transparent by revealing how this relationship is like an addiction.
Other than that, it's her usual themes - leaving, waiting, darkness, light, giving up, giving in...
Great song.

this song helpled me quit smoking..."well i loved you more than life itself...and i'm prepared to kick it..." i still utilize that line today...havent smoked since 1994 and i smoked for 24 years....so thanks stevie...i do kno people who have faster life ending addictions and i think the words.."i loved you more than life itself" is a safe thing to say about any addiction to ANYTHING..as that is how an addict feels..be it cigarettes, gambling, sex, heroin, coke, porn...the choice to choose the addiction over living becomes a choice no more....a true addict WOULD choose their fix over one last breath...so sad but i am convinced now true..and the older u get the harder it is to kick it...but with commitment and preparation..it can be done...not preaching...just sharing an experience.....thanks

I have been listening to it non-stop for the past 3 days
...and I can't quite make up my mind if it's because I like it or I'm just THAT starved for new (to me) Stevie material. It definitely has it's moments...and then there's forgotten chimpanzees...

By a stroke of luck, this song popped up on my iPod while I was driving.... in the one week of my entire life when I would've powerfully related to it (aka last week). It helped me realize that the two primary "addictions" of my life were interchangable in a sense.
Rock on, Stevie. I love how I keep discovering new songs to be completely floored by, even after being such an avid fan my whole life.

It's a brilliant feeling. I'm doing that with Tusk at the moment...
Kick It is a great little song... 'declaration of war' and 'I love you more than life itself' are great moments.
