GAGALUPE of course! I LOVE Lady Gaga. she's the most exciting thing to happen to pop music and music videos in a long-ass time. Bad Romance is an amazingly catchy song and it's so unique. Gaga's way of working in Gothic elements, darker undertones into a catchy pop song with a great hook is genious.

I think Lady Gaga is the WORST thing to happen to pop music in a long time (and that's saying a lot). She removes meaning from everything. She just operates on arbitrary outrage and excitation. She appropriates performance art -- you know: that pretentious NY East Village trend that went out in the 80s and that Madonna (God help us) already perfected.

OK. So some of her songs got hooks. But what does she do with them?

ETA: For me the definitive Lady Gaga moment is in the Joseph Kahn-directed Paparazzi video: she's so corrupt and evil that she eats poison -- and lives.

ETA: A friend of mine, the playwright Ben Kessler, recently wrote this about Lady Gaga's new single: (http://rateyourmusic.com/release/single/lady_gaga/bad_romance/)

A friend balked at my use of the word "dirges" to describe Lady Gaga's music. A semi-defender of Gaga, he stated that her songs are too lively to deserve that epithet. I think this song proves us both right. Lady Gaga makes pop dirges that aspire to liveliness, i.e. dirges in denial.

The perspective of "Bad Romance" blends no-way-out, airless pathology with the vast remove of someone who has never had a romance, much less loved. Here, pretension, naivete and detachment combine to form a four-minute miniature of contemporary nihilism. Lady Gaga's grotesque guises & tunes provide a veritable runway show displaying the latest wares of a hyperactive, unmoored capitalist culture.

The Fame Monster, indeed.

Now now truefaith, I appreicate the Shakira vote but let's not get nasty. :o

Jazz, I hate that we are disagreeing on this because usually we are on par with each other.

I was diggin’ Gaga in the beginning (first two singles) but then I started to see her in interviews and she was turning me off. Then I saw her live and that sealed the deal. She talked more than she sang, “me me me me me.” (Sorry John L, I feel bad for being in a funk that night but I blame the Lady). I’ve always been a casual fan of Shakira’s but now I’m totally into her. She is bad ass without trying. She has a natural gift whereas Lady Gaga comes across affected. As a DJ, I still play Gaga (have to) and I can bounce along but... Shakira gets my vote.

"can we still be friends Jazz"? :)

I dunno...gimme a day or two to think it over. lol. I think Gaga is one of those love or hate artists, but I'm so excited by her music (especially the new 8 songs) and her whole image. I like Shakira a lot too though so...

I called her "evil" and "corrupt" before. But "disgusting" is extreme? Evil and Corruption disgust me. And that MTV Awards performance. And the costume changes. And "OBAMAAAA ARE YOU LISTENING"... and, of course, the music. Yes. Disgusting.

I posted this somewhere else on Chit Chat but I'm gonna repost because this is related. Gaga is my favorite guilty pleasure. For all of you who dislike Lady Gaga on the premise that she has no talent, watch this. At the very least, Shakira couldn't do this:

I know that there are many artists who couldn't go acoustic and they are still excellent at what they do-- but I do think its cool that Gaga isn't one of those people, especially since her pop recording quality is at debate in this thread. It's nice that she has both.

"Teeth", meanwhile, is the most sonically intriguing thing GaGa's put her name to, an ode to rough sex conducted over an intense, tribal production that recalls Cher's "Half Breed" and Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk". Oh, and the ballad? ...

Yes, I remember this.

My comment was directed at those who point at the fact that since Gaga can play the piano, her success isn't- as widely believed- predicated on her purloined spectacle. Of course, in reality, if it wasn't for all the costumes/overproduced records, she's be a poor man's Nellie McKay AT BEST.

GypsySorcerer

Oh I know that, it was just you mentioned MTV Unplugged and I remembered watching Shakira's episode. Shakira can play the guitar, so she can definitely do the acoustic thing if it all boils down to that. But I agree that Lady GaGa is all spectacle, I find nothing unique about her actual music. I do find Lady GaGa fascinating from an image point of view and I think the way she's marketed herself is brilliant but musically I would take Shakira any day. I mean when Whenever, Wherever first came out it really did sound like nothing else on the radio, love it or hate it.
Btw, I love Nellie McKay. Her new Doris Day album is fantastic.

I am not a big fan of Gaga or Shakira, but I picked up Shakira's Laundry Service album when it came out and listened to it quite a bit at that time. But mercy - some of her lyrics. "Lucky that my breasts are small and humble, so you don't confuse them with mountains." Oy.

GypsySorcerer
11-21-2009, 02:40 PM
 That's true but still better than the Poker Face lyrics imo! I do think part of the quirkiness is the translation from the Spanish to the English. Didn't Gloria Estefan help translate those lyrics for the English version? I'm not saying I'm a huge fan of Shakira but I just prefer her over Lady GaGa, I understand the appeal more.

I think Gloria was involved, if I remember correctly. I see the appeal of both GaGa and Shakira, even though I'm not crazy about either one. As you said, GaGa has marketed herself brilliantly.

daniellaaarisen
11-21-2009, 03:00 PM
I see the appeal of Lady GaGa too, for sure, it's just less about the music and more about how completely insane she seems.

I hated her for a really long time, and then I began to like the catchiness of a few of her songs (namely "Love Games"-- "Just Dance" irritates the crap out of me). But yeah, for her it is TOTALLY about being as weird as possible. Usually, I love that about her-- as long as its in moderation. She needs to be weird enough to be interesting but not so much that she crosses the line.

Have any of you seen the "Bad Romance" video? I'm 75% petrified of it, 25% in awe of it.

Thanks for all that posted videos to see who Lady GA GA is.
Now I know why I never bothered spending more than 20 secs on her.

Shakira is far more the talent with her writing, producing , singing and dancing. Crossing over the latino to america is a huge deal and Shakira has nothing left to prove.
Class act all the way!

My bet is Shakira will be around 10 years from now and many other performers will fade .

I don't like either of them and I dont have an opinion to contribute, but I had just read that Lady GaGa had 80 pizzas (2 meal deliveries of 40 pies) delivered to fans who camped out for one of her CD signings and I thought that was pretty cool. I have given Gaga's music a try recently & while it's catchy I don't think it's brilliant. Of course I rarely (if ever) feel that dance pop music is brilliant. Just not my thing.

I see the appeal of Lady GaGa too, for sure, it's just less about the music and more about how completely insane she seems. She's a good singer though, I will give her that. But she's only really been around for five minutes, it will be interesting to see how she develops as an artist, if she's around for that long.

ITA, Sharon. it's like she suddenly popped up out of nowhere & she's huge. The negative thing about her freakiness is that most people (myself included) wrote her off immediately because of it. Well, I take that back - I wrote her off because I assumed she was run-of-the-mill fluffy dance pop crap. I assumed she was overcompensating for lack of talent and/or inability to sing. I assumed she wasn't writing her own songs.

Shame on me, because it's obvious she is talented and CAN sing. Very well, actually. I don't have to like her, but I get her. Now I'm just torn between thinking she's the next Bowie, Madonna or Britney. I've ruled out Britney I think. I saw her Barbara Walters interview & I'm actually most reminded of Marilyn Manson. :D

Completely agreed.

I'm a huge music snob and kinda ashamed of it-- I'm the type of person who will subconsciously judge you by the music you listen to. I have over 15,000 songs on my computer. Music is just my thing. So when I told my friends that I was obsessing over GaGa, they were really confused.... especially since I used to RIP HER when "Just Dance" first came out. I simply didn't understand her appeal.

Then The Fame Monster was released and somewhere, I heard "Speechless" and "Monster." These are both incredible songs. I then went out and bought the double disk with both The Fame and The Fame Monster and honestly, they are two of the very few CDs that never leave my car, in the company of a few Fleetwood Mac records and Bon Iver alone.

Her real name is Stefani Germanotta. She was accepted to Juilliard's pre-college program at 11 years old but chose a more traditional education instead, enrolling in a private Catholic school. She’s known piano by ear since she was 4 years old, wrote her first ballad at 13, and gained early admissions to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts at 17, but later withdrew to fulfill her music career. She's talented, guys. I agree that her music doesn't always show her musical capability, but you gotta realize that its there..... and live, its unavoidable. Plus, I bet 95% of you haven't heard her newest album, The Fame Monster. It is almost a concept album in the sense that she intentionally saved her darker songs for this record, keeping them off of The Fame. So lyrically, there's just a lot more substance on The Fame Monster... you can even see it in "Bad Romance" with all of her Alfred Hitchcock references.

You're sooooo right. I really hope you've seen her do Paparazzi acoustic on YouTube, though, because its magical.

I was blown away when I heard that, the other day.
At first, I thought Lady Gaga was just one more stupid singing-blonde, like Britney Spears or something, but I really do think she's talented. Then, I heard Poker Face, and was kind of ashamed to adore this song...not my type at all, though.
In fact, I still don't know if I love her, or if I hate her. She doesn't leave me indifferent, and that's why I voted for her :).

There are two things that really annoy me about Gaga, 01) her association with Perez Hilton. She claims to be about “love” yet, I don’t put Perez into that category at all. What is wrong with a person that thinks he can say anything he wants about somebody else just because they are a celebrity? He makes a living saying hateful things about people, and what is worse is that people give him a platform to do so. 02) There is no humor with GaGa – it’s all so serious and self indulgent. The clip that Luke posted of her performing on SNL is exactly how her concert was when I saw her last April in FL. Imagine Stevie getting the crowd worked up, she starts to play Stand Back then immediately stops the song to go sit at the piano to sing the ballad version of Rhiannon, WTF?

Oh, but that's just her being creative and original! I mean- she went to a performing arts school! She can play the piano! *That's* why she's popular!

Okay- you're Lady Gaga. Your popularity continues to rise as you're touring North America. Problem is, you're booked into smaller theater-sized venues that have long since sold out, and there's no room on the schedule to add additional dates to capitalize on the fad that is your career.

What do you do, Gags, what DO you do?

Add some new props/make the existing ones bigger to necessitate a move across town to a larger venue with less than 72 hours notice, of course! A win win! More money for LG, and more people get to see the FIERCE glittery sparkly things!! and hear some music or something... UNLESS you're one of the hundreds of fans who missed the email/news (over Christmas/New Years holidays) that you needed to purchase your tickets again! (again, these announcements were made on very short notice)

What a ****ty way to treat your fans. LG's folks are swearing up and down that this was all unforeseen- which, long story short, I know as a fact to be complete BS.

I hear ya Luke. I really hate to be a Debbie Downer. I know people like her, they enjoy her so, to each their own. I just can’t get over the self absorbed nonsense that she puts out. I’m at work right now so I can’t watch any you tube clips that are posted – but I think it was in this thread actually (maybe the clip that Daniella posted) Gaga talking about air conditioning .. then how she’s beginning to meet people and their like “oh, you’re Lady Gaga – you make dance music”, in which she replies “you’re telling me what I do.”, as if there is any real story there. It is like she is making controversy over nothing – to get the crowd to scream. She couldn’t be more annoying. As a DJ I play her music and I can get into it while at the club, but because of her, I like the music less and less, and it’s nothing I ever reach for. I change the dial fast anytime I hear her on the radio – that is how annoying I find her to be – and I hate to say that because I’m a true music lover but man, get over yourself Lady.

Somehow I suspect that self-absorbed and nonsensical is how Lady Gaga rolls/rolled, regardless of her stardom. She's definitely talented, if not more than a bit derivative (hello, Madonna Jr.). But she's definitely on another planet. On last night's "Launch My Line" on Bravo, LGG was asked about her fashion sense. And she basically replied something to the effect of, "well, it's all about shape, like, walking through a doorway... and coming through the other side... and you take on the shape of the door- that's who you are..." Huh? She's either a brilliant eccentric or just plain goofy. I suspect it's the latter moreso than the former...

the poll is closed, so i can't vote. but if it WEREN'T closed, i'd vote lady gaga. it's completely irrational and goes against everything i believe in, but i'm obsessed with her. i do like that she writes her own music and plays piano etc. but i'm connecting with her songs more than i have any other artist in a long time-excluding nicks, of course. honestly, sometimes i find myself listening to gaga more than nicks, lately, and it kinda scares me. i'm sure it's just a phase.

I saw that too. WTF? And how cliche of her to choose red vinyl as her "inspiration" fabric for them.

I remember reading one time that someone commented on Interpol, stating something along the lines of: "Didn't Joy Division do this twenty years ago, and better?". And that is how I feel about Lady Gaga, because Madonna will always have that eccentric shocking place in pop music history, imo. Plus, i do believe there is a difference between creativity and trying everything you can to be different. Shakira on the other hand, :D, is one of favorite music artists. She is highly underrated as a simple belly dancer. But her last cd "Oral Fixation", is absolutely incredible (sans Hips Don't Lie). Shakira's lyrics are much more realistic and relate-able than Lady Gaga, who found popularity with the random spurts of English within her hit singles from her debut album. However, as previously stated, Lady Gaga is definitely great to dance to, outside of the dancefloor it is excessive and mostly commotion, imo.

gah! it pains me that so many people don't like her. oh well. I've moved on to a GaGa board anyway. lol. she really makes me happy in the same way Stevie does so that's all that matters. I think she's great.

Which Gaga board? I'll totally join. I love her. She's a total guilty pleasure for me but I just can't get enough of The Fame Monster.

my husband just turned 49 this fall~ never listens to top 40~ i am lucky to ever get him to listen to someone new~ there are only 3 bands that when they came out new he actually liked & plays~ matchbox 20, wallflowers & oasis~

but he totally floored me when he was watching the grammys w./ me & watched gaga w/ elton john~ we are both long time elton fans, so he thought he would actually stay in the room & listen~

he loved gaga, i was dying~ if you new or even saw my hubby, you would never peg him as someone who'd even know who gaga is:laugh:~

Gaga wins my vote hands down. Shakira definitely has some moves but her warbly vocals kill it for me everytime. Painful to listen to really...whereas Gaga has a great voice. I also dismissed Gaga immediately as mere pop fluff but was pleasantly surprised when I heard her sing live on the VMAs and realized this whack chick can sing!
