I wish Stevie would record Space Needle to be used on an episode of Grey's Anatomy. It would be perfect! Recorded really simply and beautifully, in a style similar to a lot of the music featured on the show. I can just picture some epic scene with a line like "Now we are dying, just like them/It's a stranger deja vu".

If it was released on itunes I bet it would even drum up some new interest in her. It'd be a smart move...ie. it will never happen. But I can dream can't I

Well I approve of everything "Space Needle" related.... especially since I'm super bitter that for some unknown, mysterious reason, it didn't show up on Trouble in Shangri-La.

But that is an excellent idea. It would be awesome exposure and also fit sooo well into the show.

I like the song too but I think it would be wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too depressing for the general public.

I too hate it didn't see light of day on TISL. I think unfortunately though, the timeframe for Stevie releasing this one has passed. It's just too dark... and it wouldn't be relevant since it's been 15 years since she was in rehab. That's probably why it didn't make it on TISL in the first place... it was a dark song from another time. I think the Grey's/I-tunes idea is fantastic... but we know how traditional Stevie is in regards to the way she releases music, and how her music reaches the public. I'd kinda hate to see this song get sent out into the vacuum of entertainment soundtracks, and be lost forever like Touched By An Angel. Maybe it'll rear it's head along with the New Orleans song on her next release... bit it Mac or solo. :woohoo:

There's just as dark and even darker music being thrown out into the world every day-- just not on pop albums, generally.

Fine, Stevie. We can compromise: If you don't want to actually release my favorite demo from the last 10 years, you can just record a beautifully mastered version for me for my birthday. I'll be 18 in January. You can throw in some sweet "Rhiannon"s, too.

Dream on silly dreamer....

Haha but I do agree, it would be amazing, and a very smart move. I don't even watch Grey's Anatomy tho, but I do believe today's shows are in dire need of stevie.

Its a droning demo. Let's not let a dearth of material from Stevie elevate meandering to genius.

Plus, both Seattle & "Grey's Anatomy" suck :wavey:

I can't tell from your post if you've seen Stevie talk about this or not... but she has a big thing about the songs she releases being positive, and she doesn't like to release songs devoid of hope. That's why she'll never release a song like Space Needle... because the song is about dark material... and doesn't really ever swing back to the positive. Agreed, the song is kiddie stuff compared to what's out in the music this day and age... but I suppose I do have to admire Stevie for sticking to what she feels is right regarding her art.

I'd guess the reason this was left off TISL was just because it was too long.

I know she says this, but I don't buy it! A bunch of her songs have no hope or happy ending, more or less depending on how you see the song yourself. She says Dreams has hope, but that's the only example she has ever given. POTU is a not hopeful for a positive ending, and it made the cut.

We just have to get used to the fact that not all the songs will make an album, this is true for every artist...I am happy that we at least have the song as a demo.

Yeah, she cites POTU, FFG and Smile at You as angry, but many of her songs are not hopeful, even if they aren't angry. Zillions of them are about loss and the ongoing pain that it leaves behind.

You're totally right. I personally suspect the real reason why she left Space Needle off TISL was because it was a very time sensitive song. I just don't think the Stevie who was in rehab for Klonopin in 1994 was the same person who recorded TISL in 2001. 7 years had passed since her rehab stint; she recorded Street Angel, Fleetwood Mac reconvened for The Dance, she released Enchanted, she entered into her 50s... so much had happened in her life. If she were to record and release Space Needle, I think it would have had to of been sometime within a few years following her rehab stint. How would she have explained the song to the press? How would it have worked into the rest of TISL, which was mainly about love lost? I certainly can't see her releasing the song now. But I too am glad we at least have the demo. It's like being a fly on the wall during a very dark time of Stevie's life.

I began a thread about this, but nobody answered me... :distress: Ok, I'll try again here:
Do you know who's the guy singing with Stevie these lines of the song: It is always black, there is always a shadow?
I don't care this song being depressing or what. I love it. Much more than half the songs on TISL.

I think that "Planets of the Universe" is debatably more depressing than "Space Needle." Her version on Trouble in Shangri-La just had the tempo to compensate. But seriously...

Now I know
Well, I was wrong
To live for a dream
If I had my life to live over
I would never dream
I still wish you gone
And I will live alone

"Space Needle" is more cryptic/metaphorical and therefore less blatantly hopeless... but the song lacks both hope AND a distracting upbeat tempo to mask the true meaning. I feel like Stevie did that a bit on "Planets of the Universe," especially when you listen to all of the demos from back in the day.... I mean, that piano demo is basically clinical depression served up on a little plate and handed straight to the listener. And for that reason, I f*cking love it.
