Looks like something out of Cronenberg's remake of "The Fly" -- or one of Ed Wood's movies.
Anyone who thinks Stevie Nicks isn't still using drugs, look long & hard at that footwear. Nobody who is sober would wear THAT in front of 10,000 people.
MacMan

Granted the shin guards make the footwear look a little better... But yeah, not all that attractive. I still find it stunning with all her resources that she can't find someone to make her some comfy all in one boots. even if they looked similar to this two piece get-up, it would be a lot better looking then wearing reboks.
Those thick shin guards, this close almost give the impression of a tenser type band, or those thick wrap things you put around your knees because of aches and pains - is Stevie possibly suffering with arthritis on a grand scale?? That coupled with the ortho type runners almost give that impression.

She is obviously experiencing foot pain and discomfort in a big way. She has rocked out in boots for many many years, and she has tried to continue to do that, but it seems to me she has the need for comfort, and if she has to wear sneakers, or orthodic shoes to achieve that comfort, rock on. I know we would rather see the boots at every show, but I'm just glad to still be able to see Stevie rock out period.

Why are you all acting like this is some big horrible revelation. Shes been wearing those for the last 3/4s of the tour. She wears them start of the show until she leaves for Big Love. She comes back in red boots, then she has her new actual boot boots Stand Back til the end of the show.
And I'm think im the only person on this board who doesnt care if she wore those flat things all concert. it really doesnt matter to me, as long as shes comfortable and continues to sing like an angel as she has on the unleashed tour.

I've been saying that this entire tour. I believe she is wearing arm braces too. Everything points to Stevie dealing with arthritis. Also, it's probably more than just a coincidence that she befriended Reese Witherspoon's mom, Betty, who is an arthritis sufferer and very involved with the Tennesse Arthritis Foundation. The machine (Power Plate) Stevie has talked about that she used prior to going on tour to "get in shape" is also used for arthritis treatments.
As for the Reeboks, hey maybe she's had other options and had boots or shoes made and these just work best for her - or are the most comfortable. Stevie doesn't strike me as the type of performer who would intentionally screw up her well-crafted Margi Kent image to cruise a couple of hours onstage in some butt ugly tennis shoes for no good reason....

Poor Stevie :( If she really does have arthritis I feel terrible for her. I hope that she is able to find some kind of therapy that provides relief. I know that it's a very painful condition. If its true though, I wish she would just come out and say it. She's told us about things much more personal than that :p

Even if she had to stick with the reboks, she could make them work so much better. There's gotta be a way to achieve the same physical effect and yet have those things look a lot less like sneakers. And as an extra bonus, I think she should wear legwarmers over the boots she's been finishing shows in (the ankle high ones).

It's possible that Stevie is wearing some compression sleeves on her legs and arms to help with circulation and fatigue. A lot of endurance athletes wear compression socks to help with blood circulation and performance, and they also help combat soreness after workouts and races. I would think wearing them during performances would provide the same type of benefits.
It's also possible that she needs to wear lace up shoes to accommodate custom orthotics. I agree that it's not the most fashionable footwear, but whatever works to keep her comfortable on stage.

I think you are totally right about the arm brace. I thought I even saw it up her sleeve at the last concert I attended. Also, I think one arm is worse than the other. That's why she does the one glove thing sometimes.
Now, looking at her move her arms and fingers, I don't necessarily see stiffness in those motions, but she's padded.
As for the boot, it certainly does have an orthopedic look to it.

Maybe, because I notice that Lindsey seems to grab her arm however he wants and she doesn't seem to be particularly in pain when he does it. So, maybe whatever she's got on isn't for pain necessarily.
This reminds me of one of those Discovery Channel shows where they discuss all the diseases Lincoln could have had. We need a doctor here, so we can better investigate Stevie's ailments.

How can all that traveling -- & no matter how pampered you are, that entails a lot of walking -- be good for her condition? Too much walking -- to & from hotels, on & off planes, in & out of green rooms in all those arenas -- & constant change in air pressure, elevation, temperature, & all that. Up & down, up & down in an airplane. In & out of limousines, month after month, year after year.
If her health is deteriorating but she still wants to perform, she ought to park herself at Caesar's in Vegas for six weeks twice a year & play there. Or play 2 months in Vegas & then 2 months in Atlantic City. Something could be figured out, I'm sure, that would be easier on her old bones & joints.

You know during The Dance tour and also on The Today show, when they promoted SYW, Lindsey always had this moment when he grabbed Stevie and kind of burrowed his head into her neck. She really did not seem to like it. And I don't mean that she looked annoyed with Lindsey. She looked physically uncomfortable. Like she had to brace herself for the contact.
On the Today Show she was actually wearing a scarf at the time, but she still kind of hunched up her shoulders defensively as zeroed in.
I always wondered if she had neck join pain. But then during the SYW tour, for Don't Stop, she didn't have a problem throwing back her neck and holding the pose at the end of the song, so . . .

I don't think they are THAT bad. I mean I'd much rather see Stevie rock her boots anytime, but these are still platform and they are very black and she wears the little black legging things to make it look less like a shoe and more like a boot. I know lot's of 20 year old girls who complain about wearing heels for one night, I can only imagine what it's like to rock out for 2 and a half hours, several nights a week in 5-7 inch platforms, when you are in your 60s! I say cut her some slack! She still looks good, and she isn't dancing with a walker, so if it makes her feel comfortable, I say go for it! I know I'd rather see Stevie put on a kick ass pain free show in her reeboks than one she does in her boots where she is in a lot of pain and can only do a half ass show. And I'm not saying she does a half ass show when she wears her boots, but I imagine they do hinder her some if they cause her pain.

This picture was taken in Nashville during her recording sessions for Soundstage. I can't think of any other reason for her to be wearing these things on her arms besides some condition. Also, remember this is where she met up with Betty Witherspoon...

Because it's very important to keep moving. If you allow yourself to just be still, you get all stoved up and it's really worse for you than moving around. However, it would explain why she is much more subdued in the shows now. I have to give her props if she is keeping on trucking with arthritis. Kudos to her for that.

Is that Today Show you're talking about the rehearsal? I wish I could see that...
Anyway, I'm sure she would be on medication for it. And, how about her limp? I'm just sayin' - evidence is there to support the theory. I hope it's all good and it's something else not quite so debilitating or that it is a mild case. But, it seems that she is using her resources to do whatever she can to overcome her obstacles. I would expect nothing less really.

Could all of this have been caused by her wearing those boots all these years? I know that it could have caused severe back problems, which perhaps could have caused neck problems as well...I never thought about arthritis though. Imagine all the stress walking around in those things for so long has caused her joints. Suddenly I'm starting to resent the damn boots :(

The only "condition" I can think of in that studio pic is just a severe case of very, very bad taste- I suspect those gloves are intended to be some kind of fashion statement- kind of like when she was wearing those awful black leather gloves with her frilly dresses . As for that top... as Tim Gunn would say, "that's a lot of look." It's sheer and has those gold faux-Asian embellishments on it... . I mean, really- that's something only Blanche Devereaux on the Golden Girls would wear- definitely not rock n roll.
On stage I do suspect that her fingerless sleeves are masking some kind of a support brace/bandage. She did mention in an article earlier this year that she had a bad case of tendonitis, which made playing the tambo painful, so perhaps this is being done to help prevent it from getting worse. I know that tendonitis can be very painful and it can last a very, very long time. As for the shoes, I tend to think that more than anything else she wears the Frankenboks because they are lightweight and springy; by contrast, those boots look very, very heavy. So I can understand why she has switched back to the 'boks for the first half of the show. I think it's just laziness more than anything . She isn't exactly wincing in pain when she's in the boots, and if anything, she seems to do her most physical performances in the boots, e.g., "Stand Back."

I don't think there is anything about her movements on stage that is consistent with back pain or arthritis, e.g., bending down at the microphone, the homage to Martha Graham at the end of GDW, windmilling her tambo around in the air, etc. And if you listen to her tambo playing off-mic, you can hear that she is going at it very seriously in time with the music, e.g., "World Turning." A person with arthritis and/or back pain would not be so nimble, flexible and smooth. Yes, her movements are gentle, slow and graceful... but if you think about it, she has been this way ever since she detoxed from coke in her late 30's. Yes, our best memories of Mama are of her doing high kicks, chicken dancing, running in place and thrashing her head around. But that had more to do with the marching powder than inspiration.

yup...she also wore them occassionally for Sara (the red ones) during the 2004 leg and she wore the ankle boots with the skinny heel for the encores on the 2004 leg as well. I thought the skinny heeled ankle boots looked great but we haven't seem them since. I hate the reeboks but I hate them twice as much with those horrible leather/spandex things she's wearing with them. And that burgundy outfit is so beautiful that anything other than the boots with it just doesn't cut it.

I'm sure she has some lingering problems from wearing high boots all those years. It's not uncommon for women to experience (and men I suppose) plantar fasciitis, achilles pain, and deformities in the ball of the foot and toes from wearing high heels regularly. They are really bad for your feet. In addition, I'm sure she gets hip and knee pain from improper support, especially if she has low arches.

This is true...makes me feel a bit better :)
But this:
I don't know if you guys know this but Stevie has a lift at the back of the stage, that is just for her, because she finds it difficult to climb the stairs to and from the stage, so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that she has arthritis.
I'd never heard this before.

yup...she also wore them occassionally for Sara (the red ones) during the 2004 leg and she wore the ankle boots with the skinny heel for the encores on the 2004 leg as well. I thought the skinny heeled ankle boots looked great but we haven't seem them since.
Are you talking about those stiletto looking shoes she wore for the encores? I was at the '04 Irvine show (have the AUD shot DVD as well) and at the end of World Turning Stevie came out in what looked like stiletto heels to me. She's also wearing them on an AUD shot DVD from the '05 Two Voices tour which I have...not sure which city though. I remember thinking "you can't wear the boots because they hurt your feet but you can march around on those super tiny heels??? I'll try to upload a clip when I get home so you can see the shoes I'm referring to.

yes they're the ones...and I have that Irvine DVD too. I didn't know she wore them on the '05 tour. I thought they looked great. Did you notice she put on a shorter skirt with the stiletto boots for the encore? It took me a little time to pick up on that.

I though it was a shirt she was wearing first, when I saw them...when I saw her in Stokholm, but then when I got home and showed the pics and videos I'd taken/filmed my mum said "I like those fingerless long gloves she's wearing" and I was like "Isn't that a shirt??? Aww it isn't, I thought that!"
And now I can see that it isn't a shirt...
I really like them! They are cool...
And she weared them on GYOW when she held my hand, lol :D
They sell them in Islamic clothing boutiques for ladies. They conceal the arms for modesty.

I remember seeing a woman wearing them too when I was in Egypt. I was walking along the Nile, it was night time and very hot. This young woman and her husband were taking a stroll, and I saw her reach for a soft drink she purchased from a street vendor. Her black cloak briefly parted and out came a slender, long arm wrapped in a tight black sleeve. I remember feeling sorry for her, how hot she must have been. But, I don't think the women feel the same way. I think they feel safer concealed under layers.

I think she's wearing these boot/shoe things to try to please US (the fans). I remember reading an interview where she couldn't believe what a big deal the boots were to people. So, I think it is very sweet she goes to such extremes for us!! I also love the fingerless glove things--they're awesome. Stevie will always rock her fashion imo.
As far as the arthritic disease, I did read where she had Epstein Barr syndrome (not sure of spelling). This may have bearing on how she feels from time to time. It's not arthritic, but it's a chronic fatigue-type illness.

[SIZE="4"][COLOR="Blue"]I think she's wearing these boot/shoe things to try to please US (the fans).
That's silly. Why would she think that a thick sole like that would please her fans? They aren't even close to the real thing. A regular-sized heeled boot (with a separate, distinct heel) would make more sense if she were trying to pay homage to the platforms.
If her problems are due to mobility, then she should wear a flat boot. Better yet, give up the the uptempo numbers and perform introspective, deep, poignant ballads on a stool while telling stories. She could strum some chords now and then, look pretty and chit chat with Waddy or some other accompanist.
I was thinking maybe she has rheumatoid arthritis or some other degenerative bone issue as I was walking home from work tonight. Ever notice Stevie's crookedy-looking fingers? Also, I thought that her skin looked very dry (especially in her decollatage area) when I saw her at Barnes and Noble for her DVD signing. I worked with a lady with severe, severe RA and the steroids she took made her skin leathery.

I was just popped in Soundstage while cleaning my house, and she looks GREAT in that... I'm not just talking about the boots, but the whole outfits, hair, and she is moving around great (high leg kicks and all)...
Such a good DVD, makes cleaning more tolerable for sure...

If you watch her entrance on the Jimmy Fallon show, when she's walking out towards him, she's got the boots on, and she puts her hand out towards Jimmy, and says (read her lips) "help me up". That first step up onto the stage looked a little strenuous for her.. So I can see her having a lift... there's a good half flight of stairs to the stage I'm sure.

It was someone who works for Live Nation who told me about the special "Stevie lift" (as he called it). He was backstage and at the rehearsals at The O2 in Dublin and saw it first hand. He also told me they use a special soft focus on her close-ups on the big screens at the shows, which amused me.

There are various types of arthritis, not just one kind. Osteoarthritis is degenerative and most closely associated with old age or excessive wear and tear on the joints. There are a couple of famous ballet dancers for instance who have had to have hip or knee replacements while still in their 40's and 50's for example. I could easily see how she could have developed it from banging the hell out of that tamborine and dancing like a woman possessed while balanced on platform boots!
But that doesn't necessarily rule out other types of arthritis that are categorized as "inflammatory" and are autoimmune in nature. This means that the body attacks itself and the body reacts with inflammation. Common types of inflammatory arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter’s Syndrome, psoriatic arthritis, etc.
Some types of arthritis can cycle or "flare" where the associated pain and limitation to mobility are worse than at other times. Essentially you could feel fine some times and exhibit no real symptoms or at least managable pain levels but at other times you could be in a great deal of pain. They are not curable but many are managable with anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, etc.
Arthritis is also not an "old-person's" disease. Kids can be diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis for instance. I was still in my 20's when I was diagnosed with a form of inflammatory arthritis. Yeah, I don't wear my high heels anymore either and Stevie is like 15 years older than I am now. Whatever she's comfortable wearing and is still on stage I'm good with even if I do think it's uglier than homemade sin.

I also have severe rheumatoid arthritis. I give myself shots every two weeks, and have undergone many physical therapy sessions. My specialists give me a grim outlook about my mobility in the future, but, I'm only 31 years old. Maybe if Stevie does have arthritis, it's just osteoarthritis from normal wear and tear to the joints.
It doesn't matter to me what she wears. I still love her, and I agree with those who said this thread makes them sad:distress:

Let's not be sad. She's not crippled, she may be going through some physical struggles, but it is part of life. I think she's doing great - if she wasn't she wouldn't be able to tour. As you get older, the body just doesn't do what it used to do. I'm 39 and this year was the first year I went - "what the crap?!" - and I've had years of back pain. So, turn those frowns upside down and everytime you see her wearing those ugly shoes or arm braces - just know she's doing it cause she still wants to "Rock n Roll!" and that she still can!

First of all, I love her boots. LOVE THEM. But lets be honest, when she wears them these days, she doesn't move around in them well and they cause her pain. I would rather have her in the boks rockin out than in painful boots.
Second, it really PISSES ME OFF when people say she needs to throw in the towel because shes not the Stevie she was in the 70s and 80s. Especially the people that are OLDER and had the oppurtunity to see Stevie and FM in their hey day. Thats great, im so happy for you. I would give the world to time travel back and see her, but I can't. When I see Stevie today and she does Rhiannon for the 1,000th time, I don't care. The woman's music has helped me in ways I couldn't even begin to describe to you all. When Im at their concerts, I am the happiest person in the world. People who say shes a hack now, what about storms? That was unbelieveable.

AI have plantars fasciitis in both feet/heel spurs in both heels/a couple of neuroma's (sorry sp?) in a couple of my toes in my left foot as well. I've been having left foot heel pain for sometime now......its not pleasant. I have went to the Dr & had many injections in my heels....which I totally hate.....I'd have a shot in my arm anyday compared to a shot in my heels. I just don't want to have surgery at all. So I'm kinda dealing with the pain but it is painful. After I get home from work & standing alot all of the time....I can't even walk at night. Usually , Monday night is the worest really cause thats the day that I'm on them the most. I do have orthotics but they haven't helped much of late either. I actually see the Dr on Monday. I'm sure its arthitis as well in some form or another. When it rains or is damp that doesn't help either. I try not to take pills cause well.....you just can't keep taking pain pills all of the time....until I'm crawling on the ground & can't walk than I'll think surgery but....thats only a last resort really. I'll do everything but that.....At least I have tomorrow & all of next week off so that will help....the rest that is. Plus I wear a night splint at night in bed. Which is a pain but if it helps than I'll wear it. Anyway, if Stevie does have that kind of pain I can totally understand it all....and its not fun either......pain of any kind isn't fun......:distress:

I agree with you. When I began this thread with the boots picture, it wasn’t my intention (at all) to make any fun of her. I thought it was an interesting picture cause it shows very well the shoes. I think they are cute, too. Maybe the line “now I understand why she’s not dancing anymore” was an unfortunate remark. It wasn’t my intention, cause I don’t care about her shoes.
I really hate when people talk about her pains (do they really know anything about her?), about her weight, about the way she looks now cause she’s not the girl she was 35 years ago… Common!, the lady is 61. She looks GREAT, to be 61. I’d like to see all those people at her age. Nobody cares if Dylan looks like a silly gnome, or Patti Smith a homeless junkie. But everybody talks about Stevie cause she was a beauty when she was young. This is a very sexist way to see things, specially coming from you, ladies out there. She was a beauty, but she was one of the best songwriters, singers and musicians of her time. And maybe she’s not that beauty anymore, but she’s still that singer and that writer, and that’s what is all about: her music.
And OK, she’s not singing Rhiannon with the passion she used to, or dancing and twirling to Stand Back as she did, but, who really cares? She’s singing better than she did 20 years ago, listen to all those RAL-period concerts and most of the 80’s concerts: she sounds like a drunken bulldog, most of the times. And listen what she does with Landslide right now, it brings tears to my eyes every, every time.
I think we’re lucky she’s still there singing and rock’n’rolling.
I’ve been very lucky this year I could travel to see her in NY and Dublin, cause we went to see HER. Maybe Lindsey is a guitar genius, Mick a funky great drummer and John the backbone of FM. But we went there to see and hear Stevie.
And like you said, I can’t describe what her music means to me, I have no words in this poor English of mine.
Sorry for this long message.

I mean, when you watch the pro-shot video of the 1991 Mountain View performance, you think to yourself that this thing couldn't possibly be the same person who sang Insider with Tom Petty in 1981 at the Forum.

This really makes me nuts. I'm embarassed for her. It's the shoelaces -c'mon. Send Karen out or something, please. It's like wearing Vera Wang w/ WalMart shoes.

I know, right!!! And to think that I could have seen that live! The concert for Tom's documentary Runnin' Down A Dream was filmed at my college and due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to go...everytime I think about the fact that I missed seeing Stevie and Tom on stage together, about three minutes from my house, I literally feel sick...like I've been punched in the stomach or something :(
Yeah, there's the dvd that I can watch, but it just isn't the same. There is so much that I missed that you just HAVE to see live.
