...when you've only ever listened to an album once and haven't given it much thought as you presumed on the first listen it wasn't all that it's cracked up to be...?
Well I fancied listening to abit of solo Stevie and thought I'd give Street Angel another try and I'm only currently on Listen To The Rain and I am lovin' the album!
I don't know why I wasn't all that keen on it on the first listen, but it has suddenly really grown on me. I especially love Blue Demin and Gretta at the momento.

this is SO strange that you should say this. I've done EXACTLY the same thing tonight with the same album. I always thought it was a bit of a bummer and as long as I've been a Stevie fan, for going on 10 years or more now. I still don't like "Docklands", "Unconditional Love", "Just Like A Woman" or "Jane", and I have made my own playlist which has taken those 4 tracks out and added "Thousand Days", "Inspiration" and "Gods Garden" and the single edits of "Blue Denim" and "Maybe Love" and it REALLY works. Like this:
Blue Denim (single version)
Greta
Street Angel (enchanted version)
Listen To The Rain
Destiny
Thousand Days
Love Is Like A River
Rose Garden
Maybe Love (single version)
Inspiration
Kick It
Gods Garden
I've listened to it twice tonight. Something has really clicked.

Great minds think alike! Lol.
I don't mind Docklands"". I think "Unconditional Love" would be better if it didn't have as much backing vocal, it makes the song sound cheesy. And I've got to admit that "Just Like A Woman" is abit of a strange song, lol.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I think the reason behind why I didn't think much of it when I first got it was because it didn't have any "major" Stevie songs on it that really stuck out, like "Rooms On Fire", "Stand Back" etc as examples.
But I'm actually really starting to like it and appreciate it.

I've always loved the singles - Blue Denim and Maybe Love. Greta is a sweet song, always liked it. Listen To The Rain and Love Is Like A River I have always enjoyed. But tonight, I dunno..the whole thing just seemed to click for me. Strange.
Well, I've never been a fan of Stevie doing covers - "I Still Miss Someone" for example. So "Just Like A Woman" never felt like a Stevie song. I think she NAILS "I Need To Know" and her version of "It's Only Love" is great - but others were just DIRE.
I really wish "Gods Garden" and "Inspiration" had actually been ON the album - I love them both!
PS. I see you're a UK fan - where abouts are u from?

Street Angel is probably not my favorite, but it deserves more credit than what it gets. I like most of the songs- with the exception of "Jane". I've heard people put down "Docklands" a lot, but I played it often. I guess liking it has to do with circumstances. A lot of people talk badly about the line about the 'laundromat". It fit me well! At the time, I had my first apartment alone and I lived above a laundromat!! Also, I lived in a town with a river. We often did go walk by it because we didn't have a lot of money and going to a picnic by the river was a virtually free activity.

I've always felt people need to give Street Angel way more credit, because it really is a solid little album for the most part. It's just straight forward guitar driven rock and roll... a style she desperately needed to go back to after OSOTM, and given the grunge climate in the mid '90s. There really is some good stuff on the album... Blue Denim is textbook Stevie. Greta is spunky and fun. The title track is moody and atmospheric. Listen To The Rain, Love Is Like A River (a personal fav), and Kick It all totally rock. I even don't mind the country tinged Rose Garden... perhaps because it's a full circle kinda song. Yes, there are some stinkers present. I don't care for the Adult Contemporary vibe of Maybe Love and Destiny. Jane is just awful, which is sad... because the first 30 odd seconds of it had such great promise. I wish songs like If You Were My Love made it on instead of some of the clunkers. The album absolutely stands on it's own merits, but it definitely could have been in another league with some tweaking.

Street Angel definitely deserves more credit, it's probably the Stevie album that I hear the least about.
And "Jane" isn't all that bad a song, I neither love it or hate it.

*sigh* im so glad uve given it another listen
Love Is Like a River and Kick it are two grossly under-rated songs
Street Angel & Blue Denim deserve listening as well
Jane i don't mind. i think people just don't like the chimp reference
likewise with Docklands and the laundromat and wtf would Stevie be doing. doing her own laundry imagery :D
Songs i pretty much skip are Just like a Woman and Unconditional Love and Greta...the demo just rocks it outta the water. It's not bad, I just don't like it. Swap those songs with Thousand Days and God's Garden would have made me happy
Blue Denim (single version)
HELL YAH!!!!! i love that version! there are a few versions that are really good. i get them confused tho. but there's one outtake that's great!
Street Angel (enchanted version)
noooooooooo really? the SA version has the wicked intro
that makes it all eerie and depressing... it just sounds like a dark day
and Enchanted version is a bit flat
you might inspire me to post my version of SA...
we shall dub them the Palatable SA for those who detest SA
