UPDATE: WZLX deejay Chuck Nowlin just checked in to say that he spoke to Joe Perry and he'll be running the interview during the 4 o'clock hour.
Has lead singer Steven Tyler quit Aerosmith? It sure looks that way, as far as lead guitarist Joe Perry can tell.
The latest rumors began when Tyler gave an interview to a British magazine called Classic Rock last week after Aerosmith's performance in Abu Dhabi. Tyler said he has pulled out of a band tour of South America and that his upcoming plans will focus on "brand Tyler." In that same interview, guitarist Brad Whitford mused on the wisdom of trying to replace Tyler but concluded "if somebody was willing to do it and the chemistry was right, why not?”
Although Tyler did not definitively state that he was quitting the band, Perry apparently interpreted his words as such. Perry told the Las Vegas Sun last week: "Steven quit, as far as I can tell."
Perry also issued a series of Twitter posts that paint a picture of a band divided, including one that says the last time the pair spoke on the phone, Tyler hung up on him. "What about [the] fans?" Perry said. "The people that also love him and put him where he is after 40 years? And I gotta read it on line?"
Efforts to reach Tyler, Perry, and other band members were unsuccessful.
This latest flurry of activity comes after the band played a few make-up dates in Hawaii after their ill-fated summer tour and the Grand Prix concert in Abu Dhabi. Tyler, according to Perry's tweets, was feeling better following a fall from the stage in South Dakota in August that left him with a broken shoulder among other maladies.
Although the Classic Rock story stated that the band's Abu Dhabi performance was filled with "bonhomie," that is clearly not the case offstage. Other band members admit they see Tyler only onstage.
Local Aerosmith fans may get one of the first glimpses of "brand Tyler" in January when the singer appears at an event at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, N.H. The event, called "Dream On: An Intimate Evening With Steven Tyler," is billed as a multimedia presentation that will include video, a two-song presentation, and a Q&A with the singer that promises "a revealing look at the intimate details of Tyler's life." The evening will benefit Child and Family Services' adolescent substance abuse treatment and child abuse prevention initiatives.
While Perry continues to tour in support of his recent solo effort "Have Guitar, Will Travel," including a gig next Saturday at the House of Blues, just last month he seemed hopeful, if not confident, that the band would reconvene with Tyler. In an interview at his home in Duxbury, Perry told the Globe "the band is not breaking up." He also dismissed the notion that the singer in his solo band -- Perry's You Tube discovery German vocalist Hagen -- was in the running to replace Tyler in Aerosmith.
In the Las Vegas Sun story, Perry changed his tune, however. “As far as replacing Steve, it’s not just about that. It’s also four guys that play extremely well together, and I’m not going to see that go to waste. I really don’t know what path it’s going to take at this point, but we’ll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we’ll be able to move Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch.”

I can't believe it either just read this on yahoo news according to Joe Perry he says Steven Tyler has not talked to him or the rest of the band for a very long time and says he assumes he has quit the band so it sounds official coming from Joe Perry.:(

Aerosmith just isn't Aerosmith without Steven Tyler. If he has quit, the rest of them are screwed!
It sucks too, because Aerosmith is definitely in my top five fave bands :(

This sounds really cool. Haven't we all at one time or another wished Stevie would do something like this?

Is Steven Tyler quitting Aerosmith?
File under: Who Cares?
Someone once told Journey that there would be no Journey without Steve Perry.
Just sayin'.
You can never say never...

Yes, and I agree... there is no Journey w/out Steve Perry! ha!
But anyway - I think Joe is just pissed with Steve's actions and made a comment out of disgust and frustration... I dont think he "quit". If you read the quote he basically says in a nutshell 'He wont return any calls, so I assume he quit the band' . It just sounds like a little bit of a resentful swipe at Tyler IMHO

Based on previous reports, I think its pretty clear that he has.

Based on previous reports, I think its pretty clear that he has.
My concern would be if he were taking pain pills for his injury and that triggered a relapse.

If he did repase, I don't think its just happened. He's been acting strange for a while now. Very sad :(

Stupid move on Tyler's part. They've been Aerosmith for decades, and if you ask me, they still had another album or two left in them.

STEVEN TYLER Performs With THE JOE PERRY PROJECT, Video Footage Available - "I Am Not Quitting AEROSMITH"
Vocalist Steven Tyler seems to have quashed the rumours and assorted babble that he had quit AEROSMITH by joining THE JOE PERRY PROJECT on stage on November 9th in New York City at the Fillmore. They performed the Aerosmith classic 'Walk This Way', preceeded by an announcement from Tyler that he has not left the band.

Even with my volume turned up loud I still couldn't understand a single word he said.

Sooo, I went to see Joe Perry last night at Irving Plaza, totally randomly (won the tix). I like Aerosmith but I knew nothing of his solo music, so it wouldn't have been something I attended had I not won the tix but I was interested enough to enter the contest. The show was pretty great, it was awesome to see Joe in the flesh, dude's a total rock star and he looks awesome. The idiot moment? I left after the "last" song because I was exhausted and had quite a commute home and I totally miss the whole Tyler thing! Needless to say, I'm never leaving a show until it's totally over ever again. I'm kicking myself so hard!

Joe was just pissed that he hadn't been able to get in touch with Steven, so he put the press out on him. End of story. It's good that he's "back" however, because I don't think that Aerosmith would have survived without him.

AEROSMITH SPLIT STILL ONJOE PERRY insists AEROSMITH's problems are far from over - he's not convinced bandmate STEVEN TYLER is still a part of the band, even though he joined the guitarist onstage in New York on Tuesday (10Nov09) and dismissed reports he had quit the rockers.
Perry admits he was stunned when Tyler turned up for his solo show, asked to join him onstage and then told fans he hadn't left Aerosmith.
He said, "I just want New York to know that I'm not leaving Aerosmith. The break-up - it just ain't true."
But he didn't hang around to talk to Perry after the show and discuss recent reports suggesting he wanted to go solo.
And now the guitarist admits Tyler's appearance onstage with him is a blur.
He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "There was all this commotion during our encore break and somebody said, ‘Steven is here.’ I was like, 'What?'"
Tyler asked to sit in with the group on the final encore of Walk This Way and Perry agreed, adding, "So he came up and sang and that was the last I saw of him."
Despite the latest news about the band turmoil, Perry insists Aerosmith is still considering touring and recording with a new singer: "He (Tyler) wants to take two years off from the band. The rest of the band wants to keep on working. We have so many different options to fill up that time. Anything is possible at this point."

From what I've read/heard, Steven jumped off the wagon quite a while ago, which has been a contentious point among the rest of the bandmembers. The "fall off the stage" thing was just tip of the iceberg. Also, if Tyler HAS left the band, it most likely would be met with a few "good riddance" remarks from his soon to be ex-bandmates.

Can a band still rock after losing their lead singer?
Recently, the rock band Aerosmith announced that it was “positively” seeking a new lead singer to replace Steven Tyler. Immediately following the news, sites like Yahoo! and Twitter saw a spike in searches for Steven Tyler, Aerosmith, and their hits. Joe Perry, lead guitarist for Aerosmith, vows to continue the band and is considering replacing Tyler with another lead vocalist.
