View Full Version : new John Mayer - FM -related
Hey guys! I stumbled upon this song from John Mayer's new album, it's titled "Half OF My Heart" and i've seen many people commenting on how it's very fleetwoodmac-esque. :) it's really lovely and DOES in fact fit FM style. take a listen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iYqf4V0ZlU

I listened to this yesterday. Its alright. If your listening to it because of Taylor Swift you might be disappointed because she doesn't even sing that much on it. Anyway, what I read was that it's "Fleetwood Mac inspired" but that was all the info given so I figured it was BS. I didn't know there were other people making an FM connection.
I do remember a while back when Taylor was first becoming popular that he was interested in working with her, saying that she would be "the Stevie Nicks to his Tom Petty"...and then I immediately felt ill

well, john mayer is a joker :) that would be quite a stretch. :)
but i love the song.

What makes me ill is that gawd-awful cover of Free Falling that he somehow has gained an audience for. His version is utter crap. I totally hate it when people cover brilliant songs and their covers sound like soft rock atrocities.
However, he is a very talented performer and for the most part I can't deny he's made some really enjoyable music, lyrically and musically. I think his reputation is ridiculous, but I somewhat like his sense of humor and the fact that he makes fun of himself.
So put that all together and John Mayer is OK. He lost quite a few notches when he touched the T. Petty song, so he needs to work hard to earn those back.

I def thought the intro was very "Dreams" inspired

Taylor's backing vocals are absolutely very Stevie-esque. You can definitely tell she drew her inspiration from songs like Stop Dragin' and I Will Run To You. The song has kinda a Fleetwood Mac-Eagles vibe to it for sure... but is a bit too country-ish to be Fleetwood Mac. The intro does seem kinda like a country-fied version of the wall of sound Thrown Down. Cute little song... thanks for sharing!

Wow- this sounds SOOOOOO much like "Say You Will". I've got to say that really is a popular chord progression. It's a decent enough song though.
I'm just done listening to the whole album. I highly recommend it! Great songs. "War of my life" also sounds like something a MAC fan would love.
I'm going to go out and buy it tomorrow. Two people I know have heard and praised this album and prior to hearing hated JM completely.

Just out of curiosity, why do people not like John Mayer? I have a slight crush on him, but then again I don't know too much about him.

Well then, can't be too bad! :woohoo:
I bought the album. I really kinda adore it. He's an excellent songwriter and I don't hate his voice at all. I recommend it to those who aren't repulsed by JM.

Look at what he is playing, to give it that extra FM sound:

I think some people just think he's succumbed to the machine. I became a fan of his back in 2001, before he was JOHN MAYER and I still love his music. He's kind of a douche, he pretty much admits it (see "Who Says") but he's got a lot of genuine talent. I think people also think he's overhyped and he tends to get a lot of credit for having certain qualities that are far more present in lesser known artists. I think the thing that bothers me the most about him is that he got so famous that I can't get tickets to see him in arena, let alone go see him in a small venue like I could have back when I was in college and a new fan. Buuut, that's kind of selfish of me. I say crush away!

That was unbelievably dull.

Bitch magazine (feminist mag) had a write-up about him saying something very sexist to an interviewer. I can't even remember what he said I just recall agreeing with the writer that it was douchey. He said he was joking. So I guess he has a snarky sense of humor or whatever. Didn't he date Jessica Simpson? He had some crappy things to say about her I thought and stopped liking him then.
This song is a real snooze, have to agree with those who said that. It's not unpleasant sounding it just has nothing to gain your attention. Except that it resembles an FM song. Like a pale shadow of one.

WOW. Never heard that song before. What a kick ass guitar solo. Very cool.
I guess some of his music could be called dull, but then there are so many people I adore whose music has been referred to in the same way. It's either too soft or too acoustic or whatever...anyway, a friend of mine said the same thing about Nick Drake and I had to slap him. I mean honestly.
I know you mean it in the best possible way but it kinda pains me to see Nick Drake compared to John Mayer. I just don't see the lyrical genius or sad beauty in his music that there is in Nick Drake's.
I wasn't comparing them in any way other than the reference to being "dull." I adore ND in so many ways that have zilch to do w/JM. I've only recently learned to appreciate the latter's music and ignore his douche-like personality as best can be expected. He's humorous, notwithstanding, but a serial dater who attracts the paparazzi and seems to enjoy it. So there are things I don't like or get about him, but good music is good music and that's how I've always felt.
Of course I realise that. Their music couldn't be more different. I just meant in terms of two artists that could be perceived as being dull. Nick Drake's music has a depth, imo, that John Mayer's lacks.
As for the personality thing, well a lot of my favourite artists don't come across as the nicest people but on the whole, for me, it's all about the music and I just don't get it with Mayer.
But of course, like all these things, it's just my opinion.
Of course. Keep in mind, though, that I slapped the idiot who called Nick Drake dull.

Someone on Youtube ingeniously overlapped Peter Green's FM "I Need Your Love So Bad" over John Mayer's "I'm Gonna Find Another You". If anyone has heard the original Little Willie John version it doesn't have the same arrangement as Peter Green. Therefore Mayer was "borrowing" from Green's version, not the original.
Here's the proof:

I find his music very dull plus he just comes across as a bit of a douche in the interviews I've read. The only reason he's known in the UK is because of all the celebrities he's dated.
I've found an amusing interview for you!

I think the intro of Half of My Heart sounds more like Say You Will than Thrown Down.
Pretty little song though, I can definitely hear the Fleetwood Mac influence.
