View Full Version : What's your LEAST favorite Stevie album, and why?

So we're always talking about our favorites and the bests... but what's the worst of the worst for you? What album do you play the least, or not at all? Why does that particular one give you the creeps?

For me, it's without a doubt The Wild Heart. It's just so cheesy, dated, uber girlie, and over the top melodramatic. From her screaming about enchanted children on the title track, to the epically sappy Beauty and the Beast, the whole thing is a study in nails on chalkboard for me . Nightbird has the be the very definition of Stevie at her gawd awful worst to me. Nothing Ever Changes is superbad as well, and has to rank up there among the top of Stevie's most self indulging, nailing herself to her own cross songs .

However, it isn't all bad. I do really like I Will Run To You. I'm always a sucker for a good Stevie-Tom Petty duo. And even tho Sable On Blond has a cheesy-porno-ebony-on-ivory kinda vibe to it, I do like it for some reason .

If I was dead, I'd be turning in my grave right now. I love love love LOVE everything about The Wild Heart.

For me, it's Street Angel. It has some really great songs on it, but as an album it's lacking IMO. Don't get me wrong, I do like it. But it just doesn't compare to BD, WH, RAL and OSOTM which are all fabulous. Stevie seems very absent on a lot tracks and I think her lack of involvement is obvious. But I do love a fair few tracks on it.

Ha, funny how we all have different likes and dislikes...Wild Heart is my favorite, except I have to agree that Nothing Ever Changes is not her finest hour, she should have included Violet and Blue instead. And B&B in concert usually drags on and on.

My least favorite is TOSOTM. The whole album just has a boring sheen over it. Production values put me to sleep - keyboards especially are too heavy and weigh the whole thing down. Fire Burning and I Still Miss Someone are the worst songs. Not much fire or heartfelt emotion on this album as a whole. The exception would possibly be the lyrics for Doing the Best I Can.

But Stevie is uber girlie and over the top melodramatic so The Wild Heart makes perfect sense. I do respect your opinion but couldn't disagree with you more. That said, my least fav solo album would probably be Street Angel, although I enjoy it a great deal, just not as much as her others. My biggest problems are the lifeless, klonopined out vocals and the lackluster production. There are, however, some great moments: Blue Denim, Rose Garden and Destiny are among my favorite tunes. It, like all her solo albums, captures a moment in her life, maybe not the best moment but a moment nonethless. The thing I like about her solo records are that they're all so different from each other, in terms of style, sound and energy. I don't feel she's ever made the same record twice or repeated herself, as some artists have been accused of doing.

As for me, it's definitely Street Angel. I just can't get into it for some reason.
Her first three are her best three, imo. Then it's TISL followed by OSOTM then SA.

It has to be the Other Side Of The Mirror for me. Rooms on Fire, Long Way To Go, and Whole Lotta Trouble are the only really amazing songs on the album.

I actually like a few Street Angel songs, Blue Denim, Greta, Street Angel - all fabulous. But for me, OSOTM is the album that, overall, lacks a lot of the wow factor and just seems to drag on and on and on.

definitely Street Angel. although I don't dislike it at all, if I have to pick a least favorite, it would be SA. and the reason, is simple. while I like most all the songs in one way or another, none (except for Rose Garden) really touch me or leave a lasting impression. no, not even Jane and all her chimps...

I think, if I have to chose my least favourite album, it has to be Street Angel...or OSOTM...though I like most of the songs on Street Angel. Love Jane :) And for OSOTM I like most of the songs too but I have never listen to I still miss someone...so, well, love to sing the songs on SA and OSOTM because it fits my voice, you know :) But if I had to chose, those 2 are the ones I chose :)

It really is a coin flip between SA and TOSOTM for very different reasons. For TOSOTM, Mama veered way off into cheeseland, e.g., Kenny G., Bruce Hornsby, etc. And she relied way too much on the distractingly untalented hack Mike Campbell. But at least the album glistened in a mystical way- it managed to transport the listener to another place. And it was an album that took lots of heart and imagination to create. But I thought for every one gem like "Ghosts" there were two lumps of coal like "Fire Burning."

By contrast, SA was much less cheesy (although "Docklands" has quite an eau de fromage about it). But it just lacked any kind of creativity whatsoever- the kind of drama and fantasy that made even songs like "Desert Angel" bearable. I do love Stevie's vocals on this album though (some of her best ever), but the songs are just so utterly derivative and bland. There is a string of songs, namely "Kick It," "Love Is Like a River," and "Listen to the Rain," that are so hopelessly mundane and uninspired that it makes me sad to listen to them; it makes me sad to realize just how much of her creative spark had been snuffed out by the tranquilizers. This wasn't the Stevie I had known and loved; it was a bad Bob Seger impersonation.

In the end, I think this dubious honor has to go to Street Angel.

This is so easy. TISL. Only a couple of songs on there are anywhere near the caliber she is capable of doing. The editing is poor. The production is third rate. Talk about cheesy. Some of her worst lyrics ever are on this record. Her voice is very monotone and boring. I just hope she doesn't end her solo career on this dud. Masterpiece my ass.

I always love seeing how everyone views things from differing lenses. To me, those three songs are part of the handful that made Street Angel a really decent, solid album. I like how they're all really upbeat, kinda hard edged, and forceful. Agreed, they're not very "Stevie" per se, but maybe that's why I appreciate them... for their difference?

Agree 100%. Like me you probably enjoy the songs produced by John Shanks. I did like this whole album for about 5 minutes earlier this year but that's just because I was desperate for a NEW Stevie solo album and have been waiting since 1994 to get one. I love all of her solo albums from the past. There are a two tracks from SA I don't care for like Jane and Just Like A Woman. I love every song on TOSOTM except Two Kinds of Love. RAL is my favorite of all her solo albums. I bought ALL her solo albums the very day they were released. July 17,1981-Bella Donna, June 1983-Wild Heart-The took forever to arive after being delayed and delayed RAL-Nov. 1985, the I didn't even know she was recording a new album-TOSOTM-May,1989 and Street Angel-1994-I actually can't remember when in 1994.

If it wasnt for Rooms on Fire, it would be OSOTM. However, since Rooms was included, the worst Stevie album is Street Angel. IMO.

I know some people love this album, but i've tried and tried and can't get into it.

This is a toss up between Street Angel and The Other Side of the Mirror for me but TOSOTM is my least favorite, I think. There's only one song I genuinely love on that album ("Long Way To Go") although I LOVE the "Doing the Best That I Can" piano demo. I either tolerate or loathe the rest of the album. For Street Angel, I at least tolerate 95% of it and there's a handful of songs I like. It doesn't stand out to me, but I don't have any real hate for it, either.

STREET ANGEL.

"Listen to the Rain" has got to be one of her worst songs, ever....
You're a frontliner/you put it all on the line
Oh, you're consistent/hey, and that's good!

No, There's no beauty and beast here!

"Love is Like a River" isn't much better.
Everything around me is electric now
But I haven't burned a candle in a real long time

Crikey.

And "Docklands" is just terrible. And "Jane"....Children of the world...the forgotten chimpanzee.

I agree 100%...this album lacks everything stevie nicks is about...it has absolutely NO magic...and production??? waaaayyyyy over produced...although i love cheryl crow..stevie should not have used her at all on this record...it sound like a "new artist" that if it actually was...no one would have bought this album..her vocals suck big time on this...there wasnt even a top 20 hit on it...and they call this her comeback? i use this CD as a coaster for my beer while i listen to wild heart....street angel has this beaten by a long shot..street angel only got a bad wrap because stevie was at her lowest point in her life personally and that was obvious so they nailed her by nailing her work...wat they should do for her "final album" (as i agree w/age old..hoping she doent end her career w/this piece of crap) is go thru alllll her un released recordings...put them on a CD ...she'll hit multi platnium again..guarenteed!! but hey...i am not in the business so that aint gonna happen

Street Angel is easily my least favorite - it's a big mess, like I said on the other thread. TOSOTM is my next least favorite. The overall feel of it is very cheesy and most of the songs aren't very good, IMO. Rooms on Fire and Ooh My Love are great - the rest is...meh.

I'm a bit surprised at all the TISL hate. Aside from Too Far from Texas and That Made Me Stronger, I think it's great.

IMO. Some of my favorite Stevie solo songs ever are on this record......SOB, Nightbird ( I absolutely love the synth on this...so Stevie to me),Wild Heart, GnG ,IAF.....
For me it would be a toss up between OSOTM and SA.....though Alice is one of my favorite solo songs ever , so its the only song (and DTBTIC )that save this record for me. I do like Kick it from SA but this album would have to get the vote for me cause it just has that lackluster to it....even the photos and album design were less than memorable and just seem thrown together....I have grown to like Docklands a little more as time has gone on but when I first got this album I seriously thought Stevie was in for it after hearing that song...I wanted to cry out of pity. I thought she'd never pull herself back out of the hole after this record....though I enjoyed the tour for this album ( she was very personable and I loved the hair )!I was very proud of Stevie with the whole Dance reunion, Enchanted , and TISL efforts....I felt that we had a little piece of the old Stevie back just much evolved:nod:

Well for me its also Street Angel too. Its just not her best really. Plus the LPCover is so boring and un Stevie like....(unlike the outtakes that we saw up on ebay at one time)....Now I love WH/BD....RAL was the turn down point too me. Now if it had been the pre-RAL LP/Mirror, Mirror...with Jimmy Iovine on full production mode it might have been much better than the chopped up mess it became...not that I don't like some of it but too me some of the unreleased songs were better than the released songs or outtakes too. I do like OSOTM much better than SA.....like others have said the production made it more cohisive LP even if there might be a couple I don't like (like 2 Kinds of Love)....but it was when I started collecting Stevie so that does make it special for me. Now I will say that I loved the Street Angel tour cause of the set list/and Stevie's voice was wonderful (better than TISL tour!!)....plus it was my first time seeing Stevie solo (with out Mac) so even if the LP wasn't my favorite the tour will always be funny huh....TISL is ok as well but I do like many of the demos/ext/outtakes/unreleased songs from the TISL period than what was actually released to us the public.......Stevie could give us much even if she never wanted to release anything 'new' ever again....just give us those UNreleased songs/demos/outtakes/extended versions with rare DVD's/rare pics...with little booklets included from those periods.....she does have options but she isn't opening herself to those options. Very closed minded. Which is sad cause as fans we lose.....but she does as well $$ wise even if she only offered up so many at a time....as true fans we'd purchase them....same for posters/shirts/limited edition/or signed items......same for Mac too.....but well....its a bummer but it is what it is....right......:nod:

She has said it tons and tons of times. Even to quote what someone said earlier about her father saying it was the worst album shes ever done, right after that she said, "but it happens to be my favorite." Of course this was before TISL, but even in 2007 she said in an interview that she wrote all the songs for OSOTM before she was on Klonopin and loved the way they turned out and STILL DID.

Yeah, well then I would like to ask her how she managed to write the lyrics and melodies to the music tracks that were written by Rupert Hine, whom she didn't meet until just before recording the album, while she was on Klonopin.

I just remember how shockingly "out-of-place" musically this album was when it came out in 1989. When RAL came out, yeah, it was full of cheesey loud synths, but as bad as that was, at least it fit into what was going on in the music world at the time. OSOTM wasn't even close to what was happening musically at the time. By 1989, no rock artists were using those soft, layered synths that resembeled elevator music (think of other albums that came out that summer like those from U2 and Tom Petty). That "sound" was really only used by the Michael Bolton/Mariah Carey "easy-listening" types, and even that was a couple of years earlier. I remember thinking sarcastically that maybe the album was actually recorded two years earlier and that now maybe Stevie thought she was Whitney Houston or something. Remember, nobody knew that she was on Klonopin at the time; we didn't know that until years later. I was devestated to think that Stevie seemed to be migrating toward "easy-listening queen" and away from "the queen of rock and roll". The only songs that didn't seem to be that way were "Whole Lotta Trouble" and "Doing The Best I Can", and to this day, these are the only songs I like from OSOTM.

Was anyone else a fan in 1989 and as shocked as I was when OSOTM came out?

I was a fan (started being one in late 1983) but no, I wasn't shocked in the least, in fact, I recall first hearing ROF on the radio and I had this big smile on my face. I know Stevie said that she let the mystic thing go on this record but I don't hear or get that at all - if it's her "magic" album wouldn't that be somewhat mystical? In any event, depsite it had more synths than her previous albums, it sounded every bit a Stevie Nicks record to me. I love it to this day and I find it to be the best sequenced of all her albums.

I was only shocked because I had no idea she had even recorded an album! In May,1989 a friend asked me if I heard the new Stevie Nicks single being played on the radio. I told her there was no new single. She said there is. So I called the radio station and they confirmed it. I heard Rooms on Fire for the first time at night looking out the window at a full moon in the sky. I loved the song from first listen and I love it to this day. I absolutely love the album. I often rank on Two Kinds of Life but even that song has some good points to it.

Color me a shocked 1989 fan.

My least favorite has to be The Soundstage Sessions. I like all of Stevie's albums and the only one that I never really get in the mood to listen to is Soundstage. My problem with Soundstage is that it has been advertised as Stevie's "new album" which I don't think is an accurate description. And don't get me wrong, I like the cd, and I think it has some great stuff of on it, but I feel it is just lacking. It only has 10 songs on it and I think they could have thrown in several others from the DVD. Also, I feel that Stevie has so many amazing songs she could have done for this that she didn't, and it's sad. Why did she not do Outside the Rain or Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You? Or Bella Donna, The Highwayman, Doing the Best I Can, Alice, Nightbird, Angel, Trouble In Shangri-La?? I would kill for those on a live CD. I think she could have made this really amazing. And I know its not a standalone album really, but I always find myself listening to one of her albums, including her greatest hits, and I can't help but think "Wow, I forgot how amazing this was" but I never get that feeling with Soundstage.

Least favorite album: Mirror. I don't think the songs are bad -- I don't think most of the songs on any of her albums are bad. But I don't like the vocals she laid down. Her voice doesn't sound good to me when she strips it of her trademark warble. Her early '80s albums were always favorites of mine because she warbled all over the scale. She had such elasticity, too, taking big leaps with intervals & creating a much wider range in dynamics -- all attributable to youth, I suppose.

I have just about nothing good to say of the album's engineering or orchestrations, except that Hornsby's acoustic piano on one of the tracks at least gets my foot tapping (the way that Roy Bittan did on Gold & Braid). I'm particularly irked by the way the drums were recorded throughout -- with virtually no bottom end. The whole album leaves me panting for a Mick Fleetwood kick drum sound, deep & full & satisfying.

Yeh, you and the rest of us Chiffon heads :p

Seriously though, she hasn't played some of those songs, if at all, in YEARS.

Outside The Rain - last played Gold Dust Tour 2005
Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You? - played every tour from 85 - 01 until it was replaced by "Beauty And The Beast" in Las Vegas 2005.
Bella Donna - last played Bella Donna Tour 1981
The Highwayman - Never played
Doing The Best I Can - played once on a TV interview, never played on tour
Alice - last played Other Side Of The Mirror tour 1989
Nightbird - performed live twice, both TV appearances, never played on tour
Angel - last played at US Fest in 1983
Trouble In Shangri-La - Played accapella as an opening song on TISL tour, but was a recording, not live and only a few lines.

I'd love to see Stevie pull some of these tracks out of the wood work, but I doubt it will happen. I'd really like to see Talk To Me, WLT, Rooms On Fire, Blue Denim, No Spoken Word, Think About It and Loves A Hard Game To Play all put back in the set, but I highly doubt they will.

Out of the soundstage songs, I really wish "Gold Dust Woman" was on the CD, because I think it was her best in YEARS. I'm glad "Sara" made it on though, and "Stand Back" is totally rockin! Love the new version of "How Still My Love" too but it goes on and on and on and on and on and on and zzzzzzzzzzzz fallen asleep.....

Hey, don't be so harsh on her. ;) She played both of these songs in 2008.

Haha I know!
But I feel she really had an opportunity to pull some of these out and do something really amazing with soundstage.
I mean how many live versions of Landslide do we need?!
I thought she should have done some live stuff we hadn't seen in years, or ever.
And thats why it kinda disappointed me.

THANK YOU for mentioning this! I totally forgot about that. I just had the excitement of hearing those first few lines flood back to me... I was nine, so I barely remember the show but I remember LOVING that.

lisjdlkfjsdhgjkhsfkgh!!! :blob2::blob1:

Is it still available?

I am so jealous of you in the US who can download the iTunes version with GDW and Edge. And also, the amazon version with Enchanted! It was SO unfair when Crystal Visions came out that you guys got Stand Back live and we didn't :(

You are most welcome. If I remember correctly, someone mentioned the lights sort of "built up" as the TISL intro was playing and then the stage went full on when Stop Draggin' kicked in.
