Just a heads up for UK Ledgies, BBC One is airing a hour-long documentary called Don't Stop on Sunday 1 November. The following Friday (6 November) BBC Four is also having a Fleetwood Mac night, showing this documentary again, Rock Family Trees and the excellent Peter Green documentary, Man Of The World.

Supeer-dooper. Lovely!!

Be nice to see this new documentary, lets hope it has some new stuff not previously shown in the BBC's Rock Family Tree's episode and also their 1988 'FM at 21' programme. :]

What's on the box this week?

'Fleetwood Mac: Don't Stop' (BBC 1, Sunday) - Almost everything that ever happens to a rock band has happened to Fleetwood Mac. One of the greatest and most enduring acts in popular music, they began in the 1960s and can still sell out stadiums in 2009, surviving countless personnel changes and inter-band meltdowns.

Featuring new interviews with Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, this documentary delves deep into the heart of the band, tracing the relationships, turmoil and changes and unwinding the complex love story between Nicks and former partner Buckingham.

Now, Fleetwood, McVie, Buckingham and Nicks are back onstage together, singing the songs that were fuelled by their 1970s relationships and their fall-out. Together they are Fleetwood Mac, one of the biggest names in rock. But it still hurts.

Does anyone know whether they are going to be making any appearances on Shows like the One show or BBC breakfast or even Jools Holland or Jonathan Ross i seem to remember the Eagles appearing on the One Show last year?

Going to see them in Sheffield on Monday night, can't wait as i saw them last on the Behind The Mask tour nearly 20 years ago so really looking forward to seeing Mr Buckingham!

Welcome!

I think if they were going to do TV spots, they'd have done them by now  it's quite odd that they haven't, really, particularly Mick.

I think the One show goes out live at 7pm so the timing might not be right for them. Mick was on it a while back when he was plugging his other band (and also mentioned touring with FM again)

Just remember that if you're in the UK and you miss the TV or radio shows you can catch them later on the BBC Iplayer.

I'll record the TV show and will no doubt have to record the radio show later from the BBC Iplayer and then save as MP3 to listen to later on my ipod.

The documentary was just on and while there was nothing really new they concentrated a lot on Tusk, which was pretty cool. There was also footage from backstage during the Tusk tour and of them getting off a plane that I had never seen before. Stevie is still adamant that she and Lindsey will never be friends. It did make me chuckle when she complained she had never been to his house.

I enjoyed it. I love Lindsey saying about how GOYW was just a truthful observation and then his cheeky smile afterwards. I think he's just trying to wind people up. I thought that in all of the interviews Lindsey, John and Mick seemed very happy. Lindsey was pretty smily the whole time. I didn't know what to think when Stevie said that it's more stressful now than ever being in Fleetwood Mac. I thought they were just having fun this tour? It worries me because she is the one who will decide if there is a new FM album.

She still seemed pretty pissed off about GYOW and the shackin' up line: "Because I'm prudish and ladylike I found it very disrespectful" lol

She was also pretty honest about the fact she was hardly there for Tango In The Night. I'm not surprised really that Lindsey quit after that album.

She's been saying this a lot this tour and of course there were quite a few quotes and interviews with the complete opposite viewpoint on the last tour.

Makes me wonder what her definition of them being friends is. It's not like Lindsey is going to roll up the jeans and park himself next to her in the pedicure chair.

I agree, it's weird. I mean, does she really expect to be a frequent house guest of Lindsey's? Given he's on tour with her for months and months each year I'd say it's pretty understandable now he has a family that he'd want his time off to concentrate on them.

Also, since someone was asking this recently, in the documentary she says that she ended the relationship with Lindsey (the line in Dreams "well there you go again, you say you want your freedom" is about herself she explained) and it ended for good on the last day of the making of Rumours.

...or ended in 1987 when she says she didn't really consider them broken up till then...or the other more recent quote where she says she knew it was really over when Lindsey's first child was born.

I know. This reminds me of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny when they were being interviewed someone asked if they kept in touch and she started saying something about occasional emails and David just said, 'Frankly, she's had enough. We spent 12 hours together, every day for 9 years. She's had enough of me.' And she laughed and said that's more time than she ever spent growing up with her own brother and sister. And he added, "Or any of your many husbands."

I mean, after awhile, there's just not much room for "friendship." It's beyond that, too late for that, too much for that.

I mean, I know I did feel depressed when I watched a documentary on the Andrews sisters and learned that after they disbanded, they didn't even keep in touch. I didn't like to think that that could happen between sisters. But I hope that Lindsey and Stevie will never be out of touch more than a year or so, no matter what happens to FM. Even if they're in touch and bickering, I don't want them to become strangers.

Yet, friendship takes a certain amount of letting your guard down and trust that the other person is not looking for a weak spot and won't exploit one. Lindsey and Stevie can never find that with each other, because they just are not disinterested enough. She can't really have dinner with him and talk about being 170 pounds and not having the confidence to write songs anymore, without feeling vulnerable and embarassed, and minding. She doesn't mind feeling that way with Tom.

There are some people that you just don't let your walls down with, but it's not really an indication of the depth of the relationship. In fact, it may be proof of its depth.

But Kristen, invite that gal over some day and show off your decorating skills. Take her into the master bedroom. It ain't a mattress on the floor, but it's pretty spiffy.

To bad they couldn't get Chris down for a new interview, and like always the time lineup goes un-mentioned, loved Mick and John on the balcony though. Seeing that Rhiannon performance (was it the rosebud thing? not sure) again makes me wanna have it on dvd, that is one powerful performance of that song. and i liked the line "I was just looking for some spring air. I was looking to breath again" (stevie about Dreams, the constant poet even in interviews)
Nicely flowing documentary overall.

I thought it was a nice documentary. Cool to see Lindsey in a classic pose int he studio and hear him say that GOYW was inspired by the riff of Streetfighting Man. never knew that.

Also a very open minded Stevie about the coke and Klonokopin.

Not much ' new' information, but some cool footage.

Also cool to see them briefly on that tourist-boat. It was a Dutch harbour-tourboat from Rotterdam (Spido), wonder if there is more footage from that Dutch trip available somewhere....

Both BTM and Time didn't get a mention. No mention of Rick and Billy. Which is kind of annoying really. I love BTM and as much as I don't like 'Time', it's still a part of Fleetwood Mac history and should have at least been mentioned as an unsuccessful point in their career. Lets not forget BTM was a #1 in the UK, so I was suprised to see this go unmentioned. LOVE the "Bella Donna" mention though and the clips from Stevie's HBO special. Lack of mention of "Mirage" too - only that it was shaddowed by Bella Donna. LOVED Stevie describing Lindsey on the bathroom floor recording Tusk and how the rest of the band were just like "......oh ok..whatever..." LOL

Stevie impersonating Lindsey on the bathroom floor was one of the highlights for me, her faces and the noises she was making, it was HILARIOUS!

I was so totally smiling when she almost shouted "shackin'up!!". It underlined the reason why I chose that screenname, I thought she was over that for years now, but it still plays a role- that was completely clear!

It was a good doc. It really flowed. Lindsey playing the rhiannon riff and stevie humming her pianodemo for it was pretty cool....

And the Lindey-on-the-tile-floor-impersonation was hilarious, although she also said: "but then he took those recordings and sped them up, slowed them down, played it though a certain amp" that sounded very respectful and proud.

And Stevie moaned that they were just waiting around all the time for Lindsey to give them something to do  According to the Carol Ann Harris book they filled their time up in other ways, and I'm pretty certain that was true given how wild they were back then. I thought it was a poor documentary. By far the worst of the three shows made to date by the BBC. Rock Family Tree's is still the best one and even the 'FM at 21' show from '88 (where they took the Chris interviews from) was better.

I could see why they concentrated on the Rumours line up but to totally ignore Mirage seemed strange. All a bit sloppy in my opinion. Whereas FM at 21 and RFT's get repeated quite often in my house I wouldnt bother watching this one again.

Have recorded the Johnny Walker BBC Radio 2 interview and will give a listen tomorrow.

To be fair theres only so much they can cover in an hours television. I don't really think it gave the hardcore fans anything they didn't already know (unless 2009 interview footage of the band floats your boat) and it would be wrong to assume that every Joe Public wants a drawn out 2 hour programme on the band. However, for the casual fan it was nigh on perfect.

I do kinda,

But also I do feel a bit sorry for Stevie who sits there after all these talking about this, Lindsey who has married (a younger woman and had children).

Somthing about it to me seems like she is the one member of the band who still hasn't really been able to move on.

I also think that part of the relationship difficulies between Stevie and Lindsey throughout the 80's and beyond was as much to do with his jealousy of her solo career as their LONG over romance.

That's what I got from it. She still sound bitter but Lindsey seems to talk about because he has to "play the game" and keep people coming back for the drama. And it means he can give the same answers he's been giving for 30 years rather than having to engage his brain at any point and come up with something new to say.

I know that I am! That is the only thing I don't like about FMac-going on about the relationship that has been over practically since I've been alive. (I'm 35) I think I hear even more about it now than I did when I first became a fan (1987). It seems to always be some battle between Lindsey and Stevie, Not getting along, so then they don't want to work together. I wish they would never talk about it again unless they are talking about it in the context of being in Fritz together or about the Buckingham Nicks album. After that, the topic should be closed.

The thing is that along with the whole Rumours saga isn't even the most interesting thing about Fleetwood Mac, at least in my opinion. What about the founding member of the band going crazy? What about Jeremy Spencer inexplicably leaving the band? What about Bob Weston wooing Mick's wife? What about the band having their name stolen and the creation of a bogus Fleetwood Mac? Everyone knows Rumours and the story about what was happening within the band at that time. It's been told time and time and time again. There's more to this band than that single album. As was posted above, the Rock Family Trees documentary is definitely the best one because it provides the most insight on the band. The only thing it lacks is more information about what happened between 1988-1996.

The funniest part to me is that she said their reaction was, "Ok that was great. Take two." When they were alone by themselves, did they talk about how crazy he was? Well, I guess they still do that today.

Thanks for uploading. Michele

I think Stevie is very talented, in that she has the ability to look quite sane and rational, especially these days. When she was still on drugs, she couldn't perfect that illusion as successfully, but nowadays, she can really be a measured wit.

Divorce and women: which way does the wind blow? Nov 03
Fleetwood Mac and a divorce lawyer’s Rumours
Coping With Divorce

I have succumbed to the “lurgy” (aka swine flu), which I think I picked up in London last week. Fortunately the symptoms have been relatively mild and here I am, back on my PC. When I am back up to speed I plan to write about the Court of Appeal’s latest judgement on the Hildebrand cases, which has repercussions for all lawyers.

Stuck at home in the meantime, I watched an incredibly personal interview with the band Fleetwood Mac on the BBC the other night, in advance of their forthcoming British tour. The band members are clearly older and wiser than they were in the late 1970s. They had stories to tell about the emotional turbulence in their lives when arguably they were at the height of their success. It made fascinating viewing for me, a fan who keeps The Very Best Of close by in my bedroom.

I love the music and I love their voices, but I must admit that the words haven’t always made sense to me. I’ve just been conscious that these are world-class artists producing world-class timeless music. Now I understand how their tumultuous lives have contributed so much to their art.

Many clients begin their meetings with me, assuming that what I am about to hear is new. It isn’t. I’ve already heard the account of the breakdown of their marriage or relationship, over and over again. Different faces, different people – but fundamentally the same story. What is interesting is that when a relationship does break down, the parties don’t always have the same tale to tell. One will blame the other. One may blame a third party. The other may say it wasn’t the third party. Perhaps he or she will insist that the relationship has simply run its course.

And so it was last night, watching and listening to the band members. Here were the same accounts of relationship breakdown – but this time set to fabulous music, and given by some of the biggest names in the music world.

Rumours was Fleetwood Mac’s greatest album. It sold millions of copies around the world. Apparently it was conceived and named to correct the rumours about the relationships of the band members with one another. As a divorce lawyer, I was fascinated to hear the story behind the album.

There was Stevie Nicks of the haunting voice and West Coast melodies. There was Lindsey Buckingham, famous for his incredible abilities on the rock guitar. They had started off as young unknowns: “Buckingham and Nicks”. Mick Fleetwood heard Buckingham playing guitar on a demo album, and immediately invited him to join. So closely attached were Buckingham and Nicks, it was a condition that she had to join too. Mick Fleetwood described them as “joined at the hip” – and yet their close relationship deteriorated. Eventually they split.

Buckingham and Nicks each wrote an iconic song about the reasons for their parting. For Buckingham in Go Your Own Way, the relationship ended in grief and anger. Loving you isn’t the right thing to do, he sang, bitterly. He would have given her the world but…..you can go your own way. He accused her of shacking up with another. It was not what he wanted. And all the world had to know it.

Nicks, on the other hand, wrote Dreams: a gentler assessment. She said she had sought a different parting, a recognition that their relationship had come to the end of the road. In her song, she focused on his responsibility for the breakup. You say you want your freedom…who am I to keep you down? Her account in Dreams seems to suggest that he was responsible for the breakup – and that he would realise it only when she was gone. She imagines him in the stillness of remembering what you had. And what you lost.

However Buckingham, thrashing away on his guitar in Go Your Own Way, was having none of it.

For me, as a lawyer who listens to both sides of such stories daily, these songs remain as relevant today as they were thirty years ago. They remind all of us that we are human and fallible.

Here are two different beliefs, genuinely held, as to what has gone wrong. Probably there is a whole lot more that could be said, about why this relationship ended as it did.

But that wasn’t the end. After Buckingham and Nicks split, Nicks began an illicit relationship with married Mick Fleetwood. He divorced his wife. His relationship with Nicks ended after he betrayed her for her best friend, Sara.

The song Sara, from the album Tusk, is my favourite of all. I never tire of it. I never tire of the emotion in her voice that until recently, I hadn’t understood. But what does it mean? I have read many interpretations, but I think it was her way of coming to terms with the loss of her great love and accepting it – or pretending that she had.

She was drowning in a sea of love. She was protected under a great dark wing. She thought she had met [her] match. Then she lost him. He betrayed her.

Now it’s gone it doesn’t matter any more. Doesn’t it? When she sings you can hear her despair as she sings of Sara: the woman who stole her lover.

In an apparent act of acceptance and forgiveness (or perhaps because she doesn’t want to her reveal her true feelings), she sings, when you build your house I’ll come by.

I have tried to imagine everything she felt when she wrote and sang that song, Mick Fleetwood playing the drums behind her and Lindsey Buckingham on the guitar alongside. It can’t have been easy.

Stevie Nicks later checked herself into a rehabilitation clinic using her former friend’s name, Sara, as a pseudonym.

I downloaded and watched this documentary on torrent last night. I must say I really enjoyed it! While there was a large emphasis on Rumours, time was also given to the Peter Green and Bob Welch years as well. I think this is probably the best and most inclusive Mac documentary outside of the Disney Going Home special. It seems the band members were much less guarded and robotic in their answers as well. Stevie seemed to cut up a little, and it appears Lindsey is finally admitting some of his wrongdoings from the past. I got the biggest smiles of the night from John and Mick though. They just seem so utterly happy, content, and wise. They obviously get the point of the whole journey... it seems maybe that Stevie (and to a much lesser extent, Lindsey) never will LOL. Just hearing John say "hey, we ain't done yet" made me so happy! This documentary definitely had a full circle vibe to it... but it's good to know the circle isn't completed yet! :)

'He accused her of shacking up with another.'

I don't really think that is what "packin' up, shackin' up's all you want to do" means though. I always thought it was him saying that all she wanted to do was travel around and "live in sin" with him as opposed to eventually getting married (although, I don't he wanted to get married anymore than she did at that time). That made sense to me because he wrote it after they'd begun traveling the world together as part of Fleetwood Mac. I thought the "packin' up" part was in reference to that and the "shackin' up" part was in reference to their relationship.

Have you figured out the Torrent phenomena yet? I had 2 friends sit me down this past weekend and show me how to download, install, and run utorrent... and how to download torrents, and play them. If you want, one night we can chat online and I can see if I can help you. I'm not terribly abreast in the whole torrent thing, and I have a Mac... so I might not be of much help. But once you get set up with the whole torrent thing, you won't believe what all is out there. The throwndown.net site alone is just a gold mine...

Yes, I can see how the meaning can go both ways. But I weigh in favor of "shackin' up" as in sleeping around. I don't think she would have gotten as upset about it, if she didn't think he meant promiscuous sex. That's why we have to listen to how prudish and ladylike she is, even all these years later. As for marriage, Stevie said Lindsey never really wanted to get married, but that all changed when he had his 'beautiful baby boy.' I just don't think they had marriage on the brain, not because the relationship wasn't serious enough for it, just because maybe young, artsy Californians didn't think a piece of paper was necessary in the early seventies. They just thought that living together as if married was good enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed this doc. It was a bit more refreshing than what we normally hear. They spent a lot of time talking about Tusk, I thought. (Won't be surprised if these sound bites end up as the radio special someone posted about to air this month).

Anyway, the way the whole thing ended, still focusing on how SnL are still yet trying to resolve and heal their relationship just rings hollow. Me thinks thou doth protest too much... But, I admit it was a humourous ending - the whole "Landslide" will bring you down thing. The FM story has become the saga of perpetual tenseness between Stevie and Lindsey?! Yawn. Get some new material, please!! ...

So, Stevie had some classic comedic moments as normal. She's just funny without trying to be sometimes. For instance, the way she looked at the camera when she was thinking how she was going to talk about the Tango fight. Oh! I did think it was touching how she sort of took up for Lindsey's complaint about her being absent from the work on the Tango album.

Great to hear "Stephanie" being played in the background too. Nice touch. And, it was especially cool to hear Lindsey talk about Stevie's writing and then playing the Rhiannon riff. Very sweet surprise! He didn't seem to be as much on the defensive as usual.

Loved seeing and hearing from John!! That was a really nice treat. And, Margi Kent's segment was neat too.

Btw, Stevie's new fav word is "done". "We're done, done." "He's done." LOL. Love that.

I just don't get why Stevie was so inflamed by that lyric, especially still in 2009! It's been 32 freakin' years already! Not to mention, her own liaisons and escapades are very well documented. Really? Even though she died early, I am pretty sure Janis had Stevie beat by a long mile.

In fairness, Stevie's gripe is that she says Lindsey knows that she didn't shack up with anyone when she was with him. Now, I don't think that's true, but that's what she's saying. She's not talking about what she did as a single gal afterwards. She also thinks that Lindsey just wrote it to annoy her, which is probably true. Thirty-two years later, he's still getting his money's worth out of that one. I wish I could do one thing that would get on someone's nerves for that long!

On the other hand, like Dee said, maybe they doth protest too much. They smiled at each other when singing that line during the SYW tour.

Fun fact: my good friend's dad is in Janis' collection of men. She taught him a song on her guitar and he still remembers how to play it this day.

Anyway, I'm watching Don't Stop right now (thanks Louie!). During the entire "ladylike" comment, I literally spit out my water when Stevie paused and then felt the need to clarify, "...that I am." Sure, Stephanie. Always.

I swear it would not shock me at all if that line wasn't her idea!!

And, one more point I would like to make about how ridiculous they sound concerning their non-friendship/friendship: Stevie said they would have to wait until they were 75 now to be friends - after his kids are grown. ROFLOL!!!! Because? Oh, that's right - I'm supposed to believe there's tension there due to his wife even though SnL were DONE in 1976. She screwed that up though even in this doc and said '77, forgetting her own diary quote of '78 and her claim of '87 and her recent claim of '98. No wonder she's got a teleprompter! Whew!

Its already saying that they yanked part 5 due to copyright, so youtube is probably gunna screw us soon.

Things I like:

A. John McVie's interviews, he seems happy.
B. Witnessing that footage if stevie stoned out of her mind, laying on lindseys shoulder passing a joint.
C. The fact that (part 6) Stevie finally admits that her participation in Tango was limited because of HER. I don't think Ive ever heard her admit that she was very absent from this record because of her own choices.

Christine said it took her 5 years to actually move to England after The Dance. I was surprised by that. The way it's sounded to me is that she practically packed up and moved immediately after that tour was over. This means she was still in LA in 2002-03?

Also, I wonder why they totally skipped over Mirage??

That's not the way I interpreted it. If you listen to that entire interview from 2004, I think she decided early in the '90s that she wanted to return to England, but it took her quite a while to actually shut down her LA life and move. I actually do think she was back in England pretty shortly after the Dance.

Yeah, i was surprised to hear an admission like that.

And then she said something about people say time heals wounds so maybe someday those wounds will be healed. 30-something years later with open wounds that still need to be tended to. Hmm. Maybe they are more recent wounds.

Yeah, these two will never have closure. I don't think they'd know what to do with each other if they ever got to that point.

"A world within a world as Lindsey would say" --- That breathes new life into LB's "Say Goodbye" -- How heartbreaking for them to sing that to each other everynight for like two years.

And, this just confirms, to me at least, that Dreams is LB speaking to La Nicks. He is telling her "her your go again, you say you want your freedom . . . . " Dreams, to me, is much more poignant and sadder from that vantage point.

Thanks for posting these

Yeah, it is a shame. I guess they feel it's too out of date now but it was the first documentary I ever saw on the band. There's a few clips from it in the Don't Stop doc, all those old Christine interviews are from Fleetwood Mac At 21.

And the Lindey-on-the-tile-floor-impersonation was hilarious, although she also said: "but then he took those recordings and sped them up, slowed them down, played it though a certain amp" that sounded very respectful and proud.

She went on to say something after that about ....After his kids are older, after they are grown and gone. I thought that was a little strange.

Basically what I took away from this Doc is that they are lying, they have been lying FOREVER. They can't tell you the really real story for whatever reason. Sorry, by "they" I mean Stevie and Lindsey. So they just keep regurgiatating the same ole stories. She lashes out and he sits there like a lump of coal, taking the higher road? Eh whatever. I think he was a real pain in the ass when they were younger, listen to how Ken Calliatt talks about him, I don't think Lindsey was a particularly fun guy to be around. Stevie alluded to it last night with the comment about their relationship becoming too dark, too obsessive. She needed air and light..etc.

Bottom line for me is they were madly in love, obsessed with each other but it was not a healthy relationship and so it ended. I think they never got over each other, he managed to break away from the group as a whole and carve out some semblance of a normal life, found a woman who could tolerate/manage him, have three beautiful children....and Stevie sees the man she'd always hoped he would become, with another woman, and personally I think it pisses her off. Remember her "Oh Stevie you made a mistake comment?" Whatev's.

I'm just tired of the media lumping the Stevie and Lindsey soap opera saga, into every doc done about the band. I wanted to hear more about John, lets see Julie and Molly, let's see Lynn and the twins. How is Mick's daughter doing after the near drowning. But I suppose that is really not "about" Fleetwood Mac. So we are left with endless tales of the same sad story. One more gripe before I crawl back into my hole. It's great how they can get up there and make fun of Lindsey for his bathroom antics and endless takes....we all know he is a crazy genius. Roll your eyes and say take three hundred, but if it weren't for that musical genius, most of us would never have heard of FM at least on this side of the pond.

I am unsure that is the correct way to look at it. I just cannot see CM taking that point of view given her comments in the Tusk doc about her songs and LB. I also think John did not have that point of view because it was mentioned back then that John took offense (or similar language) at LB's telling John how to play (or something like that). I think La Nicks trusted LB with her songs because up until Tusk, he had made them to her liking. I also think she liked the final product of her songs on Tusk and thereafter until SYW, and even then, she liked some of them. So, I think that rather than them conceding they would be nothing without LB, I think they started Tusk with the expectation of another mainstream album. Then, LB went in another direction, which ultimately lead to Tusk and its quirky sounds not selling very well in terms of how much and long it cost to make it coupled with the comparative lack of sales. So, I think they saw Tusk somewhat as a betrayal of their trust at the time. In hindsight, I think they now see his point. But, I just do not think the other four ever thought that LB was the be all and end all of FM and its sole vehicle to popularity. It was the five (then) that put FM on the mega stardom map.

Note - LB was a creative genius then. But, he had some great material to begin with and four other musicians that significantly added to the pot

I thought that was a very telling comment from her. It would not surprise me if she believes that once the children are older, she and he will live out their lives together as they were 'meant to do' but couldn't manage in the usual way.
Equally, who's to say they won't????/

Also, I think the doc was a great prmotion for the band. I'vehad several people talk to me about it who hadn't followed the band since Tango in the night. So, good or lightweight, it did the group a lot of good to be remembered for an audience that doesn't follow fan forums but likes them.

Actually, you did when you said "I know and they must have known it too, otherwise they wouldn't have indulged him and allowed him (and the bathroom oohs) to create the most critically acclaimed album the band has ever generated, even if it's not the most popular."

Who is the "they" in your sentence? Presumably, you meant the band knowing that LB was the be all and end all. Or, "if it weren't for that musical genius, most of us would never have heard of FM at least on this side of the pond" to quote the original source you referred to and I paraphrased.

Maybe you are objecting to me equating "the be all and end all" with "if it weren't for that musical genius, most of us would never have heard of FM at least on this side of the pond." They sound the same to me. But, if it makes my point clear and if you want, substitute the latter for the former in all my posts in this thread

I disagreed and said most of us would never have heard of FM without the sum of the contribution of all the members. LB was just one part of that and I was pointing out that I do not think the band would take the point of view that "if it weren't for that musical genius, most of us would never have heard of FM at least on this side of the pond."

But that's not the same as "be all and end all." For example, I think the same statement could be said of SN and probably CM: "if it weren't for that musical genius, most of us would never have heard of FM at least on this side of the pond." The point is, given that understanding, how do the members accomadate each others' needs. The issue here was how the other band members accomodated LB (who is essential to the group), but we could also have a discussion about how LB and CM accomodated SN's needs because she, too, is essential.

What's really important here is that of these three arguably essential elements, the most needy is LB.

I did not say that and I actually was not responding to the pond comment, because I didn't know that Tusk made them famous on this side of the pond. I wasn't here then. In fact, if I'd been asked to guess, I would think they like Peter Green first, then Rumours and then Tango In the Night. I was responding to the idea that the band recognized Lindsey's genius and thought him to be a large part of the reason for Rumours' success. More than 20% of the reason for it, which is why they chose to indulge him on Tusk, even though they didn't agree with his musical outlook.

As for the band being more than the sum of its part, I've always thought so, which is why I've missed Christine since she left.

Thats exactly what I thought the second she said it. I don't know exactly what she meant by it though...but it is obvious that she's got something particular in mind.

I do have a question though. The narration says that Christine was the "female songwriter reluctant to front the band." Are there any quotes from her or anyone else in FM that support this? I would be interested to know if that were true and, if so, why she was reluctant to be the face of FM as it were at that time?

I guess I always just took that to mean that she wouldn't have wanted to front Fleetwood Mac as it became after Stevie and Lindsey joined and they all became super famous. In my mind, when imagining what it must have been like before Stevie & Lindsey, I always thought a bluesy FM fronted by Christine...maybe not literally out front as Stevie and Lindsey did...but just there to the side with her keyboard would have made a pretty great show. It would have been a perfect setup for smaller venues with smaller stages. I definitely would have paid to see it!

So, let's think about her statement. When Will was born she knew "it" was over... not when Lindsey was dating Kristen, or became serious with her (remember the backstage comment she made to a fan how Lindsey was practically married), not the day she found out Kristen was pregnant or even the other nine months of said pregnancy...but the day Will was born.

I think I've said this before - or something similar, at least - on the board, but the reason I feel that Stevie says Joe Walsh is the love of her life is for the same reason Dani put forward: emotional distance. Nobody wants to look as though they're still enamoured with their ex-boyfriend while he's in another relationship. It makes them feel vulnerable and desparate. However, I think Stevie thinks that if she keeps saying she loved Joe Walsh the most that Lindsey might get jealous, despite being married with children. After all, one of the main goals for both them still is to score points of one another.

However, I think that Lindsey, like the rest of us, thinks Stevie doth protest too much.

After all, one of the main goals for both them still is to score points of one another.

I totally agree with this. I think this defines their relationship today. Seems to me that would make great fodder for new songs. (but i digress)

As for the kids, I actually find it strange that Stevie hasn't taken an interest. The kids are what could tie them together; if they can't agree on the music, surely she could relish being the magical fairy aunt who spoils the kids and entertains their fancies in ways parents just can't (and, thus, score more points against Lindsey). Although, now that I just wrote that out, I guess I know why Lindsey (or Kristen?!) has banned Stevie from the house. But all these mentions of Lindsey's kids (and her keeping count on house visits) suggests that the decision is NOT hers.

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but when Stevie mentioned never visiting Lindsey's house, I was pretty surprised, because I'm sure, sure, sure I read/heard somewhere that she'd said around the SYW tour that she was so close to Lindsey now, got on so well with him, that she'd gone in vacation with him and his family. I hope I'm not going mental, and will try and find the quote, but I'm sure I read that. And, if it is true, she was either lying then. Or she's lying now. How can she go on holiday with him, but never pop to his house?

On BBC4 last night there was a Rock Tree special on them that followed the repeat of the doc, and it was so old that a) Stevie had just quit the band and b) (for those who knew of him) John Peel was alive. Either way, the interesting thing I took from it was that she sounded just as bitter now as she did then. She still had a scathing tone when she spoke about him, and, aside for that thing that she wore on her head back then, I wouldn't have known so long had passed. Her attitude towards him is still the same.

I love her an' all, but she needs to get over it now.

Stevie knows exactly what it's like to be around Lindsey and his children.

"It's girl world...he has a little boy - he's very quiet and so he and Lindsey are like definitely you know, in the corner."

She's also talked about him taking his girls to ballet and basketball practice.

And, this is a great quote about how the kids perceive her...

TCR: What do Lindsey’s kids think of you? Are you like the crazy aunt?

SN: They like me a lot. They totally get it. You know, they’re in the dressing room saying, “Can I wear that cape?” or “I need to put on those boots!”

That is friggen adorable. I bet it's those daughters. They look like little divas-in-training. I imagine the son probably couldn't be bothered but the girls, Leelee in particular, will probably break out into a full-blown chiffon head in a year or two if she hasn't already.

Yeah, Stevie. Quote that line to LB again from that song of yours: "You'll never get away from the sound of the woman who loves you..." Now he's living with a bunch of mini Stevies every day.

No, she never said she went on vacation with Lindsey and his family. She did say that about Mick and Lynn though. I think she said she goes shopping with Lynn too. During SYW she did say that even though she's not their aunt, she insists on having a relationship with Lindsey's children. I think she did spend time with Lee Lee back then during the tour and I'm sure she's spending time with Stella and Lee Lee now, while they are on tour.

Totally OT, but is it Leelee or Lee Lee? Either way it's not the most typical name. Lindsey must have named that one for sure, so his "cutting-edge" reputation would be in tact. :)

In Lindsey's booklets, it is spelled Leelee. I've always been under the impression it's a nickname or a variation of her given name.

Oh bull. I'm sure we have all heard various stories over the years that would put Stevie in anything but a prudish light. A serious rock & roll light but certainly not prudish. It really does bug me that Stevie seems to want to ignore what a great rockin out life she has had. I've always loved the fact that this beautiful woman surrounded herself with other beautiful women and then went out and played the boys game of rock & roll without trying to butch herself up. I really wish she would take more pride in her past.

^I think its an important distinction to make that under normal circumstances she's never been someone that we know slept around a lot. It was only after her breakup with Lindsey and during the years of heavy drug use that her behavior could be questioned...and we all know that there were a lot of men in her life then...there is no denying that. Even she admits it. In the 2001 Downtown segment, Cynthia McFadden stated that Stevie readily admitted that there had been many men in her life. When she says "prudish" she's talking about the person that she is now and was when she was with Lindsey & before she became addicted to cocaine...something that most definitely altered her normal behavior. If it hadn't been for the drugs, she may never have become as wild as she did. Is there even a count of how many men she's been with since she got clean? I just don't think that who she is as a person should solely be defined by a time when drugs and addiction ruled her every decision. So is she really as prudish as she says...I've no idea...but at the time when those lyrics were written and she and Lindsey were still essentially still together...I don't think its fair to say she wasn't.

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I know at one point it was discussed that maybe they hadn't told the truth in the beginning about when they actually got together because of her parents. That could be true. I was also thinking, though, that it could have something to do with the fact that there was this rule while they were in Fritz that she was off limits...maybe they ignored that rule and actually got together then but had to keep it a secret from the other guys. Afterwards, just like the idea of lying to her parents, it was just easier to keep up with the lie than to tell the truth. Does anyone think this is possible??? I mean, we can't deny that the length of time they were together keeps getting longer. There's got to be some explanation for that

Old age and lapsed memory:laugh:.

Stevie is hilarious to me the way she tries to put a date or time to everything anyway. Whether she means it or not, it always seems rather sinister to me. It's like she said she was on cocaine from 1977 - 1985 and then she says, 'I can't tell you about anyone else. I'm the only one who went to rehab. I'm the only one who has it documented. I don't know when the others stopped using it.' Something about the way she says that makes me think, "Man, her bandmates are probably huge cokeheads to this day!"

Or when she was promoting SYW, she said what time they got to the studio and what time they left and she also said what time Lindsey got in and what time he left and I was just thinking, "she keeps track of that stuff just in case she needs an alibi!"

That is why she called Dreams Dreams, isn't it? I'm pretty confused about the timeline of their relationship. I used to think that they were together as a couple from 1968 - 1976, only to change into "Friends with benefits" from 1977 until 1987. They managed to keep from each other from 1987 until 1997. Then came The Dance and there is no freakin' way that they did not start their relationship again (Stevies point of view) or had a more discreet fling behind Kristens back (Lindseys point of view) until' Lindseys and Kristens son was born and Stevie pulled a stop to it. Now after that? Excuse my dirty mind, but they did what they are used to do for awhile even after that. Nowadays, I think that they are over romantically, but on the other hand old habbits don't die. I guess we'll never know.

That is of course only my own opinion, maybe filled with rumours I heard, but no known facts.

Anyone with other opinions?

I was bored with it 18 years ago. It was rather pathetic then, and now it's just blatent pandering, mostly on Stevie's part. Since their break up in 1977 has there not been a single thing for her to talk about from an artistic aspect? Has her life been so stunted? Can you imagine your life and focus of conversation being dominated by a relationship that died so long ago? I don't know of any other artists who are so rooted in their past. It's not a good thing. Get over and on with it.

I thought that was strange too. As if... part of the reason she hasn't visited is because his kids are there (which strikes me as GOOD reason to visit).

or more like there is a reason [read: wife] STOPPING her

I thought that was a very telling comment from her. It would not surprise me if she believes that once the children are older, she and he will live out their lives together as they were 'meant to do' but couldn't manage in the usual way.

Stevie is also a little confused.

She moved to SF in '65 and met Lindsey then graduated in '66. She joined Fritz in '67 and was living in Los Gatos with Lindsey by '69.

I'd get home from my waitress job and we'd have dinner and then we'd start working at nine at night, and we'd work till three, go to bed, get back up and he'd work on the music and I'd go and be a waitress. So that's really what went on through 1974 till the last day of 1974. It was about a year and three months from when it came out till the day that Mick Fleetwood called us. MICK: Met a guy in a supermarket who I knew vaguely. He said, "What are you doing?" I said, "Actually, I'm looking for a studio." He said, "I've started working at Sound City." Whish is the studio in the valley. And we drove to Sound City and walked into the studio. And Keith Olson was an engineer and I literally just was saying, "Well, what does the room sound like?" Keith put Buckingham Nicks, the master tape, on, which he'd produced with Lindsey and Stevie, just for something to play. And that's where I heard Lindsey's guitar playing. ELECTRIC GUITAR SOLO PLAYS I just happened to walk in to Studio A. I walked in right in the middle of this blistering guitar solo at the end and here's this really tall, skinny guy in the room just kind of... doing this and I really didn't know who it was. And then a week later I got a call form Mick and he said, "Our guitarist Bob Welch is leaving and would you like to join the band?" I didn't think about Stevie one way or the other because I was looking for a guitar player. Stevie's, quote, "never forgiven me". It was like, "Oh, you didn't want me, "you wanted Lindsey, right?" Which, right at the beginning, was true. And very quickly we realised that they were totally joined at the hip. And I said, "Well, I'll have to... I'll have to talk to my girlfriend "about that but, if we do, "you're going to have to take my girlfriend too." A meeting was arranged that would define the future of Fleetwood Mac. So we all met at a Mexican restaurant on Third Street in Los Angeles and we all got on like a house on fire. Everyone thought that it was a little unique that there were two women. It was certainly unique that there were two couples. And the only criteria with Christine was, "We have to meet, "because I just want to know that I get on with her "because there can be nothing worse that two cat-calling women "that don't get on in a band." And she was right. CHRISTINE: In the musical environment I hadn't worked with another girl. When I met her, I instantly liked her, not because she was like me, quite the contrary - we were totally unalike, me and Stevie. We were complete opposites at opposite ends of the personality spectrum. STEVIE: I said, "You know, I think "this woman Christine McVie is pretty fantastic "and this would give me somebody to hang out with." ...

We were complete opposites at opposite ends of the personality spectrum. STEVIE: I said, "You know, I think "this woman Christine McVie is pretty fantastic "and this would give me somebody to hang out with." In 1975, the new line-up gathered at Sound City to record their first album together and figure out how to marry a laid-back British blues trio to a folk/rock duo with Californian ambition. LINDSEY: We had songs that were probably being tooled up to be maybe another Buckingham Nicks album. Some of those songs went on to the first album they recorded with Fleetwood Mac, and Rhiannon was one of them. She writes on the piano in a very, very rudimentary manner. It's very much like this. It's... MIMICS PIANO KEYS IN RHIANNON My tendency is to add rhythm and to rock it up so just... bringing that thumb style that I have which is sort of somewhere between classical and folk. PLAYS RHIANNON I didn't know anything about Wales at the time but I always thought it was kind of like a Welsh country song, you know? PLAYS BASS LINE # Rhiannon rings like the bells in the night # And wouldn't you love to love her? # She goes through life like a bird in flight # And who will be her lover? # All your life you've never seen A woman # Taken by the wind # Would you stay... # MICK: We rehearsed before we went in the studio and my sense was, "My God, we're home and dry." Lindsey's a great performer and Stevie was IMMEDIATELY in charge of her arena. The whole spell that she put over audiences with all the movement and all the lovely stuff. # ..Oh, now you know # That your dreams unwind Love's a state of mind... # CHRIS SALEWICZ: She had the two voices, one of which is the kind of archetypal West Coast, female singer/songwriter, er, er, lilt - very sweet, very girly. # ..Still a state of mind # I know, I know # Dreams unwind Love is all you find... # But then there's also the almost Janis Joplin-like blues belting, both of which she uses to fine effect in Rhiannon, which, of course, was her stage tour de force. # ..Take me like the wind now # Take me like the wind, baby Take me with the sky... # KEN CAILLAT: I'll never forget that one. It was a 1976 performance and she was just screaming Rhiannon. I can remember her vocal cords were just stretching out, you know, the muscles were stretching and she went a complete octave above where anybody could take that song. # ..All that's left, all that's left # All that's left, all that's left All that's left # R-r-r-rhiannon # Can't leave her Rhiannon, you can't leave her # You're a dreamer, you're a dreamer IMPROVISED BLUESY LYRIC # ..Dreamer, dreamer # A-a-a-ah... # The woman who had been the plus one in the new line-up gave the band the hit single that propelled their album up the US charts. MUSIC: "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac The band also realised that the key to their success was a luxurious, simple sound. "Less is more" dictated the sound of the then Stevie and Lindsey incarnation of Fleetwood Mac. it was kind of an exercise in paring down. It was a kick and a snare and a bass. So keep it simple and just...and let the voices and Lindsey's guitars layer the rest of it. We didn't even know what a harmony was with Peter Green and then, bingo! The blend of the vocals - you know, Chris's voice is slightly husky and Stevie's and Lindsey's - that blend was... Wow! It was like, "Yeah, this is gonna happen." # Listen to the wind blow # Watch the sun rise. # ...

I don't understand what Ken Caillat means when he says that Lindsey wouldn't sing his lyrics, and that it would make Stevie mad.

well, he was getting at the fact that Lindsey didn't want to sing the lyrics to GYOW in front of Stevie because he knew they'd make her mad ("packing up/shacking up" and all that).

She probably could sense that he was holding back not singing the lyrics in front of her, coz after awhile when a song gets to a certain point in development you have to figure the guy's got lyrics..... and THAT probably made her mad....who knows why...feeling left out? like everyone else must know but her? that WOULD, I'd think, make you feel a little weird.... but, then again, who knows?
