Well, it's been over a year, and we've shared some absolutely stellar photos!!! We have finally made it full circle, and have covered all of Stevie's solo tours and such. For those who have Rock A Little pics, this is it baby- the last of the bunch!!!!

I actually really don't have any Rock A Little pics on my comp, which is highly bizarre.... :(

Hope this series has been fun, and that we've all gotten some stellar pics out of the deal!!!

Lisa, is that one with Mick really RAL? I think it's Mirage. Also, the big pic where she is wearing a red top and a shawl over that (second pic) I think might be Wild Heart era? I'm not positive, but I think it could be.

Also, does anyone know how to ID an early (live) RAL pic from a later RAL pic? Stevie doesn't look as wasted in all of these pics...there is a difference.

The early RAL pics are like the ones with the sunglasses Priestofnothing posted which are actually from a benefitshow she did in 1985, so way before her Rock A Little tour started, and how she looked like in the ICW-video, which was filmed early '85 and most of the RAL-promos. Basically the lower part of her hair is dark, and overall she looks less messy than other RAL-era pics.

Thank you Sanne. The 2nd and 3rd pics you posted show the difference I'm seeing. In the 3rd pic, she looks much healither. Would the 3rd be early on, and the 2nd later on in the tour? Or can we not really tell?

It's hard to tell, I agree there's a difference between the pics, but I think the 3rd pic is actually from later in the tour, because she looks a lot like she did in the Red Rocks video (and I'm not talking about the later added close-ups)
These are from the Red Rocks-video:

The Red Rocks concert was late in the tour, it doesn't really support the theory that she got messier as the tour progressed, I don't know, I guess she just had good days and bad days?

I think you're right about the red top picture being WH. Maybe late WH, but it's hard to tell with the hair.

Mick pic - I've always assumed it was RAL because her face is fuller and she looks a little heavier overall. Maybe it's one of those in-betweeny pics from 1984?

If those aren't wasted eyes, I don't know what they are. Mine get the same way when I've had a few too many cocktails. What strikes me the most about these pictures is how OLD Stevie looks. How old was she at this time, in her mid-30's? She looked pretty rough.

And she's never looked older than her age a day in her life. These pictures show how f**ked she was.

That's what makes it so wonderful, Rock A Little is the pinnacle of 80's Stevie,

Personally i think she looks better in some of these pictures (SOME being the key word) than she did in the pictures from TOSOTM Tour,

I just hated the masses of hair and puffy dresses from that tour...:(

I'm not a fan of anything TOSOTM, basically. If we're talking coke vs. klonopin in terms of Stevie's appearance and performance quality, blow is the lesser of two evils. That being said.... Ack! I still can't get over those cowboy hat pictures.

And yet, Rock A Little is probably my favourite era, despite Stevie looking completely wasted on all of these pictures. There's something about it -- the excess, the eightiesness, the best haircut ever, her voice. It's like she'd totally succumb to the power ballad thing that was coming in around that time.

I think it can be both a criticism and a positive. Of course, the power-ballad thing was cliché and tacky, but it kept Stevie relevant. The reason Rock A Little did well in terms of sales was because it was fashionable. No matter how outdated it sounds now, it fit into the era in a massive way.

Are you all serious?? As much as everyone complains about her not switching up what she wears?? She had some seriously awesome clothes for this tour in my opinion :D

she seriously brought something to & rocked the 80's look IMO~

It's hard to tell, I agree there's a difference between the pics, but I think the 3rd pic is actually from later in the tour, because she looks a lot like she did in the Red Rocks video (and I'm not talking about the later added close-ups)
These are from the Red Rocks-video:

The Red Rocks concert was late in the tour, it doesn't really support the theory that she got messier as the tour progressed, I don't know, I guess she just had good days and bad days?As silly as that whole dove bit was in that video, I have to give it a thumbs up for the major boobage Stevie is showing. No such thing as too much boobage from Stevie as far as I'm concerned.

I always thought these were from the close-up retakes, else this was staged specifically for the cameras. Her makeup here is 100% opposite of what she was typically wearing on stage for that tour. Gone is the kohl liner, and the misty brown eyeshadow. I wonder if her assistants took her backstage, hosed her down and fluffed her hair back up, gave her a quick toot and pushed her back out on stage. "Stevie, they are going to give you a tranquilized white pigeon. Hold out your hands and DON'T DROP IT."

I don't think so cause in the close-up retakes she has that red streak in her hair:D

I had never seen those pics in the cowboy hat of her from RAL tour. Could it be that horrid hat was given to her by some fan during the song and she threw it on? That is a possibility so I wouldn't get too upset about the photo.

But still, she doesn't look that great.:(She doesn't. And the style of makeup didn't do her any justice. But she was very sick during that time and well, dying really and I believe her. As dramatic as she is sometimes, I think we fans really do believe that. I just glad she came through it all.

I bought the lace top Stevie is wearing in this picture from It's Only Rock and Roll memorabilia brokers some years back when they auctioned off a whole bunch of Stevie's concert outfits. How I wished I were a millionaire at that time! I've only come across one other picture of her wearing this top. This picture is far better.

Early on someone posted the picture of Stevie and Mick, that is from the Mirage tour. There's video somewhere from the Mirage tour of Stevie putting that monkey on the drum set. It's from the same video as the Mirage tour video, but from one of the songs that was cut??
Also someone mentioned that one of the photos looks like it was from the I Can't Wait video from early '85. The videos for "Talk To Me" and "I Can't Wait" were shot at the end of 1985 about a week apart. The video for TTM premiered right around Christmas. ICW came later on. I taped the premiere of the video when it aired on MTV and Mark Goodman goes on to say "There you have the new one from Stevie Nicks. Talk To Me already a top ten hit for Stevie as well it should be." Then he goes to say something about the production of the song, saying he thinks he hears a glockenspiel on the track and that the song sounds like a Phil Spector wall of sound production. He ends by saying "Stevie does plan to tour for Rock A Little sometime in the sprint, so keep it here for dates."
For some reason people think she toured in '85 for the album, she didn't. The tour began around March of '86.

I can't believe she sold off any of her clothes? I just want the skirt

It's Only R&R is a consignment place and the tag on the blouse had an inventory number on it that started with KOZ, which made me wonder if she gave the blouse to Dave Koz or his wife and they consigned it to It's Only R&R. "They" do that a lot, give their stage worn clothing to people as gifts. What I really wanted was that blue and green burn out velvet paisly skirt and blouse outfit they had for sale from the Tango/Rock the Cage tour, but it was $4,000 or $5,000. I'm not that rich! But, yeah... I want one of those skirts too!

Wonder who was doing Stevie's make up for some of the RAL shows. The hat photos... make up isn't very flattering. I'm glad she didn't stick with that look for long.

But, Pete, i still feel that her greatest live vocals (solo) were in 1983, not 1986 (however fine those were). I think '83 was a tour with more coke consumed than in '86, which seems to have been primarily alcohol. Hence the changes in the face.

Some of Stevie's WORST vocals were on the RAL tour. The radio broadcast of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" with Peter Frampton from New York is horrible. She just sort of slurs her way thru. There are several boots from the RAL tour where she's slurring rather than singing. The Wild Heart tour has some great stuff, things hadn't gotten too far out of control yet.
She was still very much doing coke on the RAL tour, she has said in interviews that she knew she wouldn't be able to get thru the tour without it, so she limited herself. At the show I saw in Hartford in '86 she was wiping her nose an awful lot in between songs. Right after the tour she checked herself into Betty Ford.

There are several boots from the RAL tour where she's slurring rather than singing. But that's what Pete & I liked about it. We consider that slurring aesthetically superior to singing (like today). As strandinthewind once told me, the violent & corrosive bowing of the strings in Beethoven's Grosse Fuge is aesthetically preferable to the traditional formalism of technique required in Haydn's early quartets.

She was still very much doing coke on the RAL tour, she has said in interviews that she knew she wouldn't be able to get thru the tour without it, so she limited herself. At the show I saw in Hartford in '86 she was wiping her nose an awful lot in between songs. In 1983, the cocaine made Stevie hypomanic: grandiose, flights-of-ideas, press-of-speech, giddy.

By 1986 on tour, the cocaine effect was dulled or dampened, possibly by a lot of alcohol, which is a depressant on the central nervous system. I think I also attribute Stevie's weight gain in late 1985 & throughout 1986 to "alcohol bloat" & increased caloric consumption.

I think what I hear in the '86 shows is more alcohol too, now that I think of it. But, I think lines of coke were keeping her "up" instead of the alcohol drag that happens as it hits the CNS. So she was a combo of drunk and wired. You are right, her press and on stage banter from '83 is much different (like the uncomfortable and odd story she blabbed on stage about The Beast getting "totally bummed out" by Beauty, for example)

I usually go to just one show a tour these days, though I did skip the tour she did a few years back with the unicorn backdrop and Cocteau BATB footage (can't remember the name of the tour). If I were to read other people's reviews of contemporary shows and they said "OMG, she was like Reagan from The Exorcist, her head flipped around and she was using a babbling, bellowy, barky voice to croak out the lyrics she could remember. She scared me", man I would RUN to get tickets.

It looks even more beautiful in this picture than any other I've ever seen of it. Thanks for posting it. I had my lace blouse framed a la Hard Rock in the rare event I should ever want to part with it, figuring they might want to buy it. Had to deframe it because the lace was so fragile it was stretching. Wish I could talk Hard Rock into trading. :D

Wish I still had that catalog with all the outfits that were up for auction. They were showcasing Fleetwood Mac so they had more merchandise of theirs than normal. I thought her brother Chris must have gone through one of her closets. Most of the outfits were from the Tango, OSOTM and Mask era tours. There were a few WH tops and some personal wardrobe items from the Rumours era. RRHOF has a few of her outfits from WH and Rumours eras. A few of those outfits ended up on Christie's auction site after It's Only Rock and Roll auction ended, including this one you and I drool over. I'd say if she ever did let any of her costumes go, she's most likely had more than one of the same outfit made. Stevie likes to hold onto all her beautiful clothes and I don't see her ever getting rid of such a beautiful ensemble as that. Yes I love her clothes ;)

what were the years that she gained all her weightSummer 1985. I saw the Mulholland Tomorrow performance on Sept. 17, & Stevie was already hefty-hefty.

Her weight yo-yo'd in the following years: She was flabby on the 1986 tour, slimmed down again somewhat for 1987 Fleetwood Mac videos & start of 1987 tour, flabby again for end of 1987 tour, etc.

It's been a weight roller-coaster for Stevie since then, as it is for so many people once they hit middle age.

good point. It always surprised me when I saw actual Stevie wardrobe items being auctioned. The tour began around March of '86.

Didn't she go to Australia at the end of '85 to tour with tom petty and bob dylan?( I know this isn't actually an official RAL tour, but did she perform new songs?)

Cause she got threatened to leave cause she didn't have a working visa, it would be so awesome to hear bootlegs from that part of the tour:)

She sang very little -- she did maybe two or three nights onstage. Had nothing to do with her own tour, other than pissing her organization off that she wasn't marketing her own new album at the time.

Stevie started her own tour on April 11.

Cause she got threatened to leave cause she didn't have a working visa, it would be so awesome to hear bootlegs from that part of the tour:)There is some audio & even a little video bootlegged from those two or three onstage appearances (including "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" & "Blowin' in the Wind") as well as some audio of Stevie & Tom singing in a hotel bar in Melbourne.

It's funny how RAL tour pictures generate such reactions. It seems like the tour photos and recordings are free passes for people to rag on Stevie's so-called horrible appearance and sound, since she was doing coke and booze of her own choice. Where are these same strong opinions when someone posts a photo from the 'Whole Lotta Trouble' tour? Or the 'Behind The Mask Tour', or TOSOTM tour? Instead, the usual reaction is "tsk-tsk, oh poor Stevie she was so ill, oh how sad that she was 'forced' by her doctors to take 5 times the daily dose of Klonopin, oh she was only trying to help herself, oh she couldn't help it that she was fat but at least she wasn't partying and gloating over her excesses like in 1986, oh I've been heavy and I know what it's like to have all those health issues, well at least she still had a pretty face," etc etc.

Those pictures really are heartbreaking for anyone who really loves her the way we do. She looks so sad. I can't imagine what she must have been going through at that time in her life. It must have been awful. I'm so happy that she finally got the help that she needed.

Me too...I love her and am so glad she came through that time and decided to get help instead of getting to the point where she would have died. She did seem to play on the whole thing with the eye makeup though...I mean she literally put brown shadow all around her eyes..like 360 degrees...????? Maybe she was making a point to everyone that she wasn't doing well....

She used the Sennheiser 441 at the KC show. I was in the front row.

An excellent recording and stage mic. I had two at the time.

2 mics or 2 recordings? If I recall, the KC show was one of the best bootlegs from the RAL tour.

Oh no, I'll say she looks like crap in a lot of pics from those eras too. I'm an equal opportunity basher.

Nah, she looked like hell at least a couple of times in every era. Even in her sex kitten days, she still took a bad photo or two. Half the time she had a mustache.

Is it just me or does this look nothing like Stevie. I mean, obviously its her...but there is something about her here that looks SO different...and I don't know what it is exactly. Every time I see them I just kind of have a "what is up with these pictures??" sort of reaction.

That was end of February & beginning of March 1986. She sang very little -- she did maybe two or three nights onstage. Had nothing to do with her own tour, other than pissing her organization off that she wasn't marketing her own new album at the time.

don't forget she was plagued with her stalker!husband David Letterman around this period

Itīs not about the hair, I think her face expression or.. you know what I mean. She was on Klonopin when Lindsey was leaving the band, so definitely during all Tango shows too. Klonopin changed her face too, sometimes itīs not so seen, but sometimes very much - maybe like in these photos from Grammy in 1987...

It may be a combination of the suntan and the outfit?

I think we're just not used to seeing Stevie in such a revealing outfit. I don't recall seeing her in strapless other than this event, so we are seeing shoulders and her entire chest sans boobs so I think our eye is elongating her somehow.

But her face does have some sort of a strange cackle to it.

^ I was going to agree w/ the idea that she looks different because of the outfit, but she wore more revealing outfits before, even if they weren't strapless. She looks weird in this one too:

I'm thinking the light shade of face-makeup is making her teeth & shoulder tone look odd.

She just looks cackley. I don't like smiling Stevie. I like serious, mouth slightly-agape Stevie in her timeless outfits. These 80's outfits date her immensely. It's like looking at an 80's high school yearbook.

I once saw the video from Australian TV (or maybe it was American MTV) of Stevie & Chris presenting an award at this Video Music Awards show.

Isn't that video on YouTube?

I never liked the big gold floral embellishments on her outfits from the 1987 era either like that black dress up there ^ from the awards show.

I do think Stevie looked good with some glow to her and a tan back then. We all do really, but I know it's healthier just to stay pale.

I think Stevie looks amazing in the pictures from the MTV awards, but she's made a big mistake in terms of makeup, in that her foundation is too light for her because she's got a tan. It's as bad as having orange tide-lines around the jaw. That's why you're supposed to have two sets of makeup for winter and summer. She certainly had enough money to do so!

At the time, I had two of those mics for recording piano in stereo.

Never saw any of her bootleg stuff.

Alas, Lucy, I wish I could have a reason to have two sets of makeup. I stay one color all year long. :distress:

I think that may be the case too. Or maybe it was just bad lighting? We everyday folks know better than to make that mistake, so I'm hoping Stevie or any professional makeup artist she used would know that. But makeup looks different in different light, so it depends really.

and yes, poor Stevie's face is far too light for the rest of her body.
she is otherwise smokin' in those pics.

MTV Video Music Awards held in 1988 in Australia.

The 1987 MTV awards were not held in Australia??!!!?? The photos of Stevie at the MTV awards were either in LA or New York. Stevie and Christine presented an award and when they were intro'd they got up out of the audience and walked to the stage. I taped the show that year because I knew Stevie was going to be there somewhere.
