On the eve of Fleetwood Mac's reunion, Stevie Nicks tells how their wild past still inspires them

When they open their Unleashed tour in Glasgow next Thursday, Fleetwood Mac will be putting the emphasis on a set of superb tunes that have truly stood the test of time.
Drawing heavily on 1977's Rumours, a record that has sold more than 40 million copies around the world, the Anglo-American rockers will surely delight thousands as they breathe fresh life into standards like Go Your Own Way and Dreams.
But that will be only part of the story.

With a career riddled by cocaine-addled excess and the pitfalls of superstardom, Fleetwood Mac have often resembled a celebrity soap opera. Their biggest hits pulled few punches in laying bare their tangled love lives.
Even now, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham regularly peppers the group's stage show with wry asides about their 'fairly convoluted emotional history' - a contender for understatement of the century.
And singer Stevie Nicks, Buckingham's former lover, agrees that their turbulent past can only add to the intrigue as Mac get ready to roll back the years once more.

'If you think you know the truth about this band, you can think again,' says Nicks, 61. 'Other than the people involved, nobody knows what really went on.
'One day, when I'm an old lady, I'm going to tell the whole tale and people will be amazed. The truth will blow your mind.
'The story is deep, dark and heavy. But it's also beautiful, sexy and more romantic than you could ever imagine. Now's not the time, though. You'll have to wait ten years for that one.'
Despite her reticence to reveal all, Nicks is refreshingly chatty and candid as she looks forward to the iconic band's latest get together. She is keen, too, to dispel a few of the myths that have built up around Rumours, an LP that topped the U.S. chart for seven months.
As the year-long album sessions got underway in 1976, she and Buckingham were breaking up, while the marriage of keyboardist Christine and bassist John McVie was also on the rocks.
Meanwhile, drummer Mick Fleetwood (who went on to have a twoyear affair with Nicks) was in the throes of a divorce from his first wife, Jenny Boyd. Are you keeping up at the back?

For all the turmoil and paranoia, though, the band were not constantly at each other's throats in the studio. 'The reality of Rumours was different to the mythology,' says Stevie.

'Of course, there were days when none of us were speaking to each other. There were angry moments and sarcastic ones, too, but it wasn't always like that. If we came up with a great piece of music, we'd all be friends.'
Rather than fight openly, the warring band washed their dirty linen in song. Buckingham's Go Your Own Way was a bitter parting shot at Nicks, who responded with the more philosophical Dreams.
Christine McVie then took aim at erstwhile hubby John with Don't Stop, prompting the aggrieved bassist to suggest that the album they were making should be called Rumours because they were all writing songs about one another without actually admitting it.

Stevie continues: 'I remember the night I wrote Dreams. I walked in and handed a cassette of the song to Lindsey. It was a rough take, just me singing solo and playing piano. Even though he was mad with me at the time, Lindsey played it and then looked up at me and smiled.
'What was going on between us was sad. We were couples who couldn't make it through. But, as musicians, we still respected each other - and we got some brilliant songs out of it.'
The current incarnation of Fleetwood Mac - which features Nicks, Buckingham, Fleetwood and John McVie - is, according to Stevie, 'very different' from the band of the late Seventies.
With drugs no longer part of the equation, the group are considerably more stable off stage, though
Christine McVie, who announced her sudden departure after the group had played at the Grammy Awards in 1998, is sorely missed.
'Christine had been having panic attacks before gigs and was developing a fear of flying, but she kept everything bottled up inside,' Stevie says. 'Then, on the night of the Grammys, she told me she simply couldn't go on any more.

'When you love someone as much as I love Christine, you know instantly when they are serious. Her big green eyes filled with tears as she spoke, and I started welling up, too.
'I told her she needed to go home immediately, and she did. She flew home to England and she hasn't been back to the States since.
'Without Christine, the band is more of a boys' club. When there were two women, we had a certain feminine power. Christine was brilliant at standing up to the boys - she'd march across the floor and tell them when she was unhappy with their playing.
'I'm more of a mediator. I'll sometimes go along with things to keep the peace. But I still think we're a great group. I'm proud to walk out every night and sing those songs.'

Having moved to LA from Arizona as a schoolgirl, Nicks joined the band with Buckingham at the start of 1975.
The couple had been bit-part players on the vibrant West Coast rock scene, and their inspired songwriting added a radio-friendly Californian sheen to an outfit whose roots lay in the British blues boom.
Stevie's mystical image - billowing skirts, riding jackets, suede platform boots and a Victorian top hat - gave the band an exciting visual dimension. This 'uniform', she explains, was inspired by her teenage years as a Californian hippy chick.
'Before we joined Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey and I played gigs all along the West Coast,' she says.

'On our first tour, I wore my street clothes and it was a nightmare. Then, one day in Santa Monica, I saw this beautiful girl in a flowing pink outfit and high suede boots. Apart from the pink, I knew I wanted to look exactly like her. So I turned myself into this little Dickensian wharf rat in a raggedy skirt.
'I later found a top hat in an antiques store in Buffalo. And that was my uniform - the jacket, skirt, boots and hat. The hat changed everything.'
That trademark costume will, of course, be dusted down before next week's first night in Scotland.

But beyond the current tour, Nicks is uncertain as to what the future holds for the band. She also has a thriving solo career and a recent DVD, Live In Chicago, featured an elaborately staged gig from her last U.S. tour.
Despite her solo plans, though, she refuses to rule out the prospect of another Mac studio album.
'When we're on the road, we barely have time to go and have a meal, let alone write new material,' she says. 'But in January we'll have a meeting and decide what to do.
'Fleetwood Mac still presents some amazing opportunities. Thirty years ago, we were all so self-absorbed that we couldn't see out of our own corner. Things are a lot more fun now.'

• The Unleashed Tour opens at the SECC in Glasgow on Thursday. The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac is out on Rhino on Monday.

FINALLY we get Mama's take on the future. I can just imagine that meeting in January- Mick is grinning ear-to-ear, John is snoozing quietly in his corner, Lindsey is staring at the floor and Stevie is busy writing a list of demands.

If that meeting ever takes place! Who knows what terrible arguments will occur over the course of the European tour. We'll hear about them in a few years time of course but for now it's all "Things are a lot more fun now."
I wonder what solo plans she supposedly has unless it just means more shows.

Well, she's a mediator, I tell you. Surely, she doesn't strike you as the demanding type.

I'm sure she was just "mediating" when she handed Lindsey his ass when he dared to question the grammar in her lyrics! Yeah, that's "treading on gossamer wings" for ya!

I assume it's from one of the Rock a Little sessions. It's the fried hair. It's the schmatta on her head. It's the sloppy lipstick job.

'When we're on the road, we barely have time to go and have a meal, let alone write new material,' she says.

Earlier in the year she said...

"I think the world should have one more kickass Fleetwood Mac record. This tour could go on for 135 shows, but when we come off the road we will be a finely tuned, well-rehearsed band, which is the best thing to be when you go into the studio because you’re already hot. Your chops are up, you’re singing great, you’ve been playing fantastic music for a year. And writing on the road is really fun. Not to mention that we already both have enough songs to do a record now. But it all depends on if we’re having fun and enjoying each other." - Stevie Nicks (Boston Herald, March 2009)

What in the devil would she be mediating anyway? Except for her, who is Lindsey fighting with? Are he and John brawling? Except for her and Lindsey, who is fighting within the band anyway?

I guess she might mediate between Karen and Liindsey. "Lindsey, you know that she is dead honest."

Other than that, unless she's doing some marriage counseling for Lindsey and Kristen on the side, I have a feeling her mediation skills are going to waste.

I personally think she's got a point. Really, how much do we know besides what we're told and what Fleetwood Mac and she herself want to be perceived as? Not that much. Basically, they tell us all the skeleton of the story but nothing more.

Especially since we hear the shame **** over and over and over again.... and have for thirty-something years.

On a different note, we have seen the following idea a thousand times since the making of Rumours, but for some reason, it sparked an idea in me tonight:

Rather than fight openly, the warring band washed their dirty linen in song. Buckingham's Go Your Own Way was a bitter parting shot at Nicks, who responded with the more philosophical Dreams.

There's a sort of bitter irony in a more current interpretation of "Go Your Own Way". While Lindsey is married with kids, Stevie isn't. He's constantly reminding her what she could have had (and what she lost)... its sad to think that they perform a thirty-two year-old song on stage together every night and Stevie may still "call it another lonely day."

I think I'm thinking too much about any and all possible sources of depression for Stevie after Michele and I discussed her potential insecurities onstage... or maybe I'm just way too focused on tragedy in general right now-- I still have a King Lear essay to finish!! :distress:

I personally think she's got a point. Really, how much do we know besides what we're told and what Fleetwood Mac and she herself want to be perceived as? Not that much. Basically, they tell us all the skeleton of the story but nothing more. But that's true of everyone, in all times & places. All any of us knows about others is what we're told. In that regard, Stevie's comment is nothing but a pointless truism & sheds no light whatsoever on the nature of knowing, let alone the facts of Fleetwood Mac.

Moreover, how would Stevie's grand idea for a book change the situation for any of us? It wouldn't -- any more than any of Stevie's arcane song lyrics provide an objectively realistic image of Stevie herself. Fans may think those lyrics provide that very thing, but they're only projecting. Everything is interpretation, which is always personal, subjective, & idiosyncratic.

However, my original point was that Stevie's belief that none of us knows any facts about Fleetwood Mac was idiotic, given the fact that we have been exposed to more information about Fleetwood Mac than just about anything else in our lives, especially if we've been fanatics for years or even decades. The information flow has been continual, thanks in part to the band members themselves (Stevie included, naturally). (To respond to your point about how much we know beyond what she chooses to tell us, we have also observed Fleetwood Mac in action on stages & in interviews & in other public settings firsthand, so we know that.) We may not know every angle, every contextual effect, & every emotion, but we certainly have the general outline.

Michele, what do you think?

Brilliant thought on how Go Your Own Way can be applied to their current dynamic. It's true because they live it. Perhaps if they performed it differently or emphasized the line differently (the way Lindsey does during The Dance dvd/cd), it would be more impactful. In other words, it's true because it's true, but do Lindsey and Stevie know it?

michelej1
10-16-2009, 11:37 AM
Michele, what do you think?

I think your absence from the board earlier this week was somewhat depressing.

Yes, it would have been more accurate to say we don't know "everything". Of course, even after we read her book, we still won't know everything, but we do know a lot and -- unless she's got some serial killer secrets to divulge -- we can probably infer the rest.

The funny thing is, even when we get more "facts," most of our time will be spent debating whether or not they are true. For instance, these days she likes to say that Christine was having panic attacks and I don't doubt that Christine had some, but I'm having quite a chortle at the way Stevie's been building the story up dramatically these last months.

And her big green eyes welled up in tears, when you love someone as much as I love her, you just know . . . Know what? That Christine is allergic to chiffon and the Benadryl just wasn't working anymore?

New Fleetwood Mac Album Coming Soon

Fleetwood Mac, legendary party band from the 70’s and singers of “Don’t Stop”, are planning a new album. The band starts their new “Unleashed” tour in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday (10-22).

Lead singer and Blonde Bombshell Stevie Nicks talked of being on the road again when she said, “When we’re on the road, we barely have time to go and have a meal, let alone write new material. But in January we’ll have a meeting and decide what to do.” Stevie also talked of how the band has settled down and given up their wild party ways of the 70’s. Nicks claims touring is actually fun now and she added, “Fleetwood Mac still presents some amazing opportunities. Around thirty years ago, we were all so self-absorbed that we couldn’t see out of our own corner. Things are a lot more fun now.”

The band will hopefully go back to the studio next year to work on their first album since the 2003 release of “’Say You Will.”

If nothing else, maybe the people who keep track of these things (Irving? Howard? McManus?) will notice how much attention even the whisper of a new album got on the wires and they will know that there is interest out there. So, it benefits us, either way.

True! I'm just betting since the cd/dvd thing was previously announced that they have something already in the can...Stevie even said that in March - that she and Lindsey had enough of material for an album so they really didn't even need to "write on the road"...

I found an article today maybe SYW time period where LB was more direct about a BN release and how they would definitely have to wait until the right timing for proper promotion - he alluded to it being part of a "retrospective" boxed set even...

Absolutely!!! Plus, I had heard it from a "inside RELIABLE" source a couple of months ago, and now it's confirmed! I don't think that several sources would come across with something if it weren't true.. just sayin'...

This is in another thread, and I really don't think we should have a thread that says "New Fleetwood Mac Album!!!!" Because they never said there would be a new album. Stevie just said they would talk in Jan. So those talks could mean anything. It's an exciting thought, but we can't say there's going to be a new album for sure.

Oh really? Actually, a very reliable inside source had told me about this a few months ago, and now, with SEVERAL other sources reporting it, be in convincing or not.. it's a go!

But in that quote all she says is that they are meeting in January to decide what to do. Am I missing something?

"When we're on the road, we barely have time to go and have a meal, let alone write new material. But in January we'll have a meeting and decide what to do."

Are all the other media reports just quoting this as their source? Mick Fleetwood in The Sun interview from last week just said he hoped it would happen. It sounds like nothing is confirmed to me, just that they are talking about it and to be fair they've been talking about it for a long time.

I can't share with you who my source is, but it's a very RELIABLE inside source who did "confirm" this was going to happen for sure! They will be getting it all together when they get home in January..

I'm reading clips from News now, the Irish Examiner, Virgin Media, etc.

It's funny to me how all the headlines are saying Fleetwood Mac plans to release a new album and all Stevie says that they're going to meet to talk about it in January. It's not like she said they were going into the studio in January. This is how rumours get started.

Michele

I agree, I see Vivfox has posted other articles using the same quote. It's the same source they are all getting the story from. Plus, in that quote she says that haven't even had time to write new material, so really they are going to meet in January to discuss whether it's worth writing new material if they do decide to make one.

Actually there were materials that were already written for Say You Will that didn't get to make the cut to that album, so there's already material to add.. And it's more than a meet up to discuss whether it's "WORTH" doing... It's definitely a meetup, from what I understood, to decide what all is going in the new album, and when it's to be done, etc.. along with other details.. it already has the "green light" status..

I might smack them both in the face if they end up just using old SYW tracks that got axed. If neither of them were actually happy with the album and they still turn to use the old material, I feel like they're just taking the easy path so they can get an album done with less effort and then call it a day. As said in the Destiny Rules Doc, Stevie was writing with old Fleetwood Mac in mind while the oters (read: Lindsey) were trying to stop "being [them]selves." They need to establish what they actually want in an album-- not the old Mac, not something totally different-- and write with the SAME band in mind.

Dani, a lot of that is just bunk. Come on - Stevie isn't going to put her name on something she doesn't want out. She scrapped the entire RAL album to re-do it, held up the release, etc. I think when she starts spouting that stuff about SYW, there's more than meets the eye going on. She may be mad about other stuff... but when it first came out she was singing its praises, and how great their album was and how great this and that and Lindsey was the love of her life - blah, blah, blah... So, uh-uh, Mama. Ain't buying it. That album was stellar and she knows it.

Eh, I think she liked HER parts of it... not so sure about Lindsey's. I donno, its definitely an interesting issue to consider. Either way, I think that they should focus on making completely new material and refer to the SYW era stuff after they've established what they want for an entirely new project.

It's not so "compartmentalized" to them, to borrow a term from Lindsey. It's not "SYW" songs vs. "new" material. Anything that hasn't been recorded and finalized to them would be "new". Ya know? (And technically to us as well.)

I'm sure it will all mesh out accordingly.

Oh...and might I add she sure sang the hell out of some harmony on Lindsey's songs...

I donno, I just have issues with the inconsistency of SYW. It just feels like a bunch of solo work put into one album to me. I LOVE almost every track on the entire thing but as an album, it feels a bit.... well, almost discordant at times, IMO.

My point is, though, that most of Lindsey's stuff for SYW was already recorded when they first went into the studio. They added Stevie's vocals and that was it. I agree-- if the material we're talking about from SYW has only been roughly worked with, then it is totally fair game and I'd love to see it. But I also think that they recorded enough songs for a double album and a lot of stuff got scratched, meaning they have some songs that are basically complete.... I don't know if I want to see those unless they actually fit and aren't just kinda forced in.

I'm sure Stevie loves some of Lindsey's tracks on the album. Every one? No. And I don't think she'd pin any of her dissatisfaction on SYW as a project (tour and studio) on just the album itself if there wasn't some truth to it.... I just don't see why she'd bring it on the album itself if her issues really were totally elsewhere.

I see your point about SYW, I just don't believe the majority of LB's songs were meant for a solo album. They knew back to "The Dance" they were doing another album. Stevie is on video saying that. I read an interview of Lindsey's today where he admitted only a couple of songs from SYW was he thinking of saving for solo. I just don't think they throw things together quite so haphazardly as they sometimes like to paint in the press.

Reason? It makes for great press to be able to talk sh** about each other, the dissatisfaction, etc. Why would Stevie bitch about the album and not about the real issues? Because it's stuff she can't/won't mention in public...so, she gets her point across another way...it's a game.

But, you're right - she didn't like "Come" and she didn't sing on it. But, Lindsey made a point of saying she "left the stage" when he did it on tour. Well, duh - she wasn't singing!

I guess SYW does feel a little disjointed, but I tend to think all the albums after Rumours feel that way. Plus, if Stevie sequenced it, as she always likes to point out that she does, then I feel she puts thought into the overall concept. Eh - JMO. :)

Murrow, Miranda, Red Rover, Come, Steal Your Heart Away, Bleed to Love Her, & Say Goodbye were ALL ready to go in summer 2001 for a fourth solo album, & all those same tracks were ported over onto Say You Will in 2003 with nothing different except a bunch of new guys dicking around with the mixes & the mastering.

I've said it before: If you look at the recorded track time frame covered on the 2003 Fleetwood Mac album, it is by far the longest ever in the band's history, approaching ten years. It's ridiculous.

I know, right. That was stupid. As if she doesn't leave the stage every chance she gets. Why was he making it sound like she left the stage during Come to take a stand?

In fact, it's the other way around. I was impressed by the fact that she did not leave the stage for Red Rover. Well, obviously she had lines to sing, so she had to stay, but somehow, I just took her being there as a show of support -- since the audience snoozed during that song.

I agree, 10 years is a ridiculous time span for an album, but things like that don't bother me. I think it's a great collection of work, despite all the dynamics. The politics interest me, sure - but when I hear those harmonies - everything else fades away and seems so - unimportant.

Did she sing on Red Rover on SYW? Admittedly, I don't listen to that track much, but I can't remember hearing her. I did read several reviews from the tour where she would stay onstage and mouth the lyrics while he sang, which I thought meant she must deem the song to be of some value.

I think she did sing on it. On stage she sings and Brett and Neale do the "Red Rover" parts.

Yes, she seems to have had a very troubled life and wasn't mentally healthy back then. Yet, so many people seemed to have fallen really hard for her, including Steve Martin and Ellen Degeneres. I'm not sure what her hidden charms are, but she certainly captured their hearts.
