D: Okay I'm like seriously distressed here, because the Ledge is now BANNED at my school. It just happened yesterday, because I go on the Ledge every Tuesday/Thursday during study hall. I am now convinced that my school only bans websites because they are fun/enjoyable. EVERYTHING IS BANNED. They banned Youtube last year (Well ok, I can see the reasoning behind that one), MLIA was banned within the past two weeks, along with all forms of social networking sites. If they see a pattern of people going onto websites, they ban them. @$!^#!

And also, IT'S HOMECOMING WEEK! YAAAAAAAY! The TPers will be out tonight, and sadly, I will not be joining them. I will however be hiding out in my bushes with a hose, car alarm, and silly string. Hohohohoho yesss. And of course, there's the dress up days and various games and mischeif going on. It's pretty awesome.

Soooo tell me Ledgies, how is/was your homecoming!? Care to share embarrassing pictures of your 80s hair? I want to see them, and I know you've got them!

Rhiya,

It's likely that you're the only person at your school surfing the Ledge.

Therefore, you've got a pretty anal "IT Dept Guy" at your school who has probably been monitoring your web surf-age.

Suggestion... You could possibly have a chat with him about it and have him to remove the block.

It was bound to happen, with all that discussion of tusking, hands slipping into gloves, gates and gardens, shaking rattlesnakes, shacking up, night tangoing, and still nights, going on day after day.

ha ha.. what a nightmare! It's banned at my job too, but I have free access to anything (I'm a manager), though I try not to enter frequently at job time.

Do they ban it specifically, or have they banned by category? (entertainment, adult, media, etc..)

It's amazing how much internet time is allowed here in NZ. As long as you don't abuse it (porn, etc) then it seems to be okay. I have my Gmail browser open all day so I can chat with my wife...! It's great!

My office is good about it too. You need a break from dry work stuff now and then to keep your head on straight. Some of us need more straightening. :p

My school is just as bad, if not worse... students often call it St. Fascist instead of St. Francis. They have blocked EVERYTHING. And at private school, you basically sign your rights away by accepting enrollment.... we can have our cars searched by administration at any time without due cause, etc. It sucks.

I'm pretty sure my school's I.T guy is a Fleetwood Mac fan so i don't imagine it will be going the way of Youtube and Facebook anytime soon.

Usually if it doesn't use much bandwidth they don't seem to care

I went to a public high school and they still searched your locker, car, backpack etc.... Also, we didn't have study hall and our computers were like these IBMs from 1981 or 1982. (This was the late '80s/early '90s) I am surprised that students can use internet access at school for anything other than educational purposes.

i graduated in 1986 & there was only 1 computer class in the whole school & there was no internet access~ it was strictly for educational purpose~ i also graduated during a time when NO ONE had cell phones, & texting?, what was that?~ there was no GPS, you had to actually look stuff up on a paper map~ we bought all our mac & stevie music on vinyl or cassette & maybe an 8 track or two, & seeing stevie in 1986 front row cost me 14.50~ there was no cable tv until i was 13~ we had 3 channels to watch & 2 pbs channels~ i remember being 13 & seeing mtv first air~

the internet is a great tool, but i don't want my son to use it as a crutch either~ he is home-schooled & i take him to the library to use actual books & learning tools to teach also~ we both like taking the time to read an actual book & do science type stuff outside & not always sitting in front of a screen~

how did we make it thru?:rolleyes:~

And your Camaro was powered by Fred's two feet too? They've had those clicker remote control things since the 1970's at least... and it seemed that everyone had a Commodore 64 or an Apple IIe/IIc. Yeah, we had it rough compared to the kids of today... but it wasn't that bad. Liam.. is this really necessary? I'm sorry... but putting someone down, who's trying to be "positive" doesn't belong here.. and that goes for other's who feel they have to be negative, un-needlessly. I'm not by far the Ledge police, nor do I want to be, but for those of us, who try to be positive and upbeat about life in general and to see stuff like this.. well.. let's just say it doesn't put you in a good light, ok?

Call me fascist, but color me surprised by the notion of a school (during school hours) allowing internet access for purposes other than for assignments. I don't necessarily oppose the idea- but a case could be made that its unnecessarily permissive and a huge distraction.

I also say this as someone 27 years old and who has used the Internet for nearly twenty of those.

Hey Lu..

Exactly! And this doesn't just go for him.. it goes for several other's who feel they have to do this to "try" and make themselves look good by putting other's down. Sorry to come on with my soapbox, but I can tell you that this is the very reason that a "LOT" of us who go back a way's on here don't come on a post, due to obnoxious, posts like that one..:(

Love you,

lol. I went to an independent boarding school and none of my friends had cars. It doesn't sound like any public school I know (they are the private ones in the uk). I'm picturing everyone driving there little hatchbacks to Eton with the music blasting.

20?! I didn't know it existed way back in 89. But yeah I went to boarding school and there's no way that we could use the school computers for browsing just anything we liked. But the access in the dorms was the same so there was really no fun in the internet until I left school.

How on earth is the business of this forum what you consider to be appropriate internet use at school? At least this thread began with a specific mention of The Ledge....

Newsgroups (USENET) have been around since 1980. My elementary school's gifted program communicated with other schools across the country via a controlled BBS for a project we were all working on- this was 1989-90. I also started using Prodigy (a long defunct online service provider) on a regular basis at home that year.

Wooo, I was surprised at all of the replies on this.

They really don't let us use the internet for anything non-educational anymore. They're banned everything that has any type of video on it too, because it used up too much bandwith (?I think?) or something. There is a filter that bans social networking sites/ other things not appropriate for school, but they do ban websites that they see a pattern of us going on. And though I may be the only one, they don't know what I'm posting. It cold be dangerous. -gasp- Either that, or someone hates Fleetwood Mac.

And Luke -- I got your PMs yesterday, I'm sorry! It takes me forever to think of / revise my replies, so expect it sometime soon! :o

At my school, Facebook, Hotmail (there's a trick of getting round this, just type in .co.uk instead), MySpace, YouTube -- generally most social networking sites -- are banned. If I try and access things that aren't banned but I'm not supposed to be on them (Last.fm for instance) I'll be able to go on the site for about fifteen minutes before the page is closed automatically.

The Ledge is banned on at my school too. I tried to go on and it was banned - so they must have some way of blocking groups of sites...cause I'm sure no one was trying to get on here before me.

One thing I can get to is the Q&A sessions from a link I've saved in my e-mail inbox. There is down time at school where I have nothing to do and sometimes I have a computer in front of me. I'll surf around during those times if all my work is completed.

I had to rescue my Merlin from my mom's 'give away' bag many times:) As for the Atari 2600, there was no way anyone was tossing it! I got it for Christmas of '84 and I still think it's one of the best presents I ever received. In the early '90s, I bought an Atari 7800. I still play them. I think we had apples in school. They were huge and we used cassette players and floppy discs to record data. I had a Texas Instruments computer at home, and remember how exciting it was that I could program it to make a rainbow on the screen. It took about two hours and 40 commands to do it, but it was exciting back then.

My sister had Merlin, but she hardly ever let me play with it. When I did, I used to mostly pretend it was a phone!

Seriously, my family did not have a remote control! We had a cable box on top of the TV and you had to get up and change the channels. Also, I am certain there were no computers in my school. Of course, I am from a teeny town out on Long Island, so maybe we were a bit behind the times.

we didn't have a remote either jannie & the only way we had a vcr was because of my stepdad's company~ because when i was a kid they weren't commercially available, where i lived at least~ his company used them for meetings & they were the same type used in schools that were absolutely huge & the tape went in the top & you had to use 2 hands to push the monstrous thing down to play~ we had one of those, but you could only use it to tape off of tv, renting videos hadn't happened yet~

and my school had plenty of computers, even computer courses for those who at that time may have been interested. I was on a computer in high school from '86-'88, learning all there was to know, and thanks to a cool Drafting teached at the vo-tech many of us were ahead of the curve when the internet sprang wide open.

As for me, I could still live without many of the modern 'luxeries' in life (I'm not a cell phone person)

We didn't have cable until I was a teen and at first there was no remote control. No such thing as channel surfing.

I took a programming class in '89 but I hated it and learned nothing. I used my Mom's computer to write my college papers but this was pre-Windows so it was all DOS. I lost an entire paper one year. Fortunately my professor was understanding, gave me an incomplete, I just had to get the paper in by end of the next semester. But when I got a job in '95 that required computer knowledge and I had access to the Internet I was hooked right away. I've always been so glad I learned to type-it has served me well.

I had a Merlin too and Atari. I was never particularly good at video games though and my little brother would kick my ass. That's not fun.

I don't have cable still!

Are they Republicans?

Hahaha. At my school yes.

But anyway, the one site (practically) that isn't blocked is the ledge. They block so many pages that they deem "uncategorized" whatever that means.

It's obvious I was gypped. No wonder I was a late bloomer in life.

Not that anyone (but me) cares, but I took this issue to Facebook. Apparently we not only had computers, but a computer LAB. I honestly have no memory of this. What else don't I remember!
