Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers beat The Boss in the last round.
Next up Guns N Roses vs Nirvana.
Once again please vote and post who you voted for and why.

I voted for Nevermind. It's one of those albums where each of the songs are consistently brilliant.

I'm kind of against Nirvana in principle..... so Guns & Roses it is.

:distress: Am I really supposed to choose between those two? I'd rather not.

I picked the lesser of the two evils (in my opinion... I don't like either album... or band, for that matter): G&R's AFD.

 I'm surprised at the reaction because these are two albums pretty much everyone I know, regardless of their musical tastes, own. I've been choosing albums from Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time list. I guess I should do one with more poppy albums too.

I'm kind of against Nirvana in principle..... so Guns & Roses it is.

How come?

Guns n Roses, all the way. I remember when AFD came out- I saw them play just before they hit it big with Welcome to the Jungle, at a very small bar out on Long Island- and then again (after they were more well known) at The Ritz in NYC.

Oh wow! What was it like seeing them back then? I saw them after they became successful in the early 90s, but it was so huge. It's one of only two stadium shows I've ever been to.

I've never liked their music, ever. I don't know what it is.... just one of those bands that I don't understand. :/

They were always my least favourite grunge band but it's worth giving their Unplugged CD a listen. The songs are surprisingly strong stripped of all the distortion and a lot of people become converts through that. That said their cover of Where Did You Sleep Last Night pales in comparison to Mark Lanegan's version.

ARGH!

I remember a couple of months ago, I was listening to a local classic rock station, and they played "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and I was all, "WTF!"

The fact that bands that were new/popular when I was a young'un are now referred to as classic rock freaks me out, man.

That said, both albums are great, and while I've always been a fan of Nirvana, Appetite era Axl Rose was all sorts of bat**** insane, so GNR it is. If Cobain had insisted on wearing tiny bike shorts, made a regular habit of leaping into the crowd at shows to knock the crap out of fans, and threw tantrums of epic proportions, then it'd be tougher to choose.

Also, Slash is my small son's idol:

It was fun. I was heavily into the local metal scene then and they really did explode onto that scene quite quickly. In retrospect, when I see the Ritz video, I see that they were pretty sloppy musicians, but at the time, I thought they were exciting and incredible. Fun times.

Interesting, I love Nirvana's cover of WDYSLN, but I've never heard of Lanegan. I love Nirvana's Unplugged CD. I think it came out about 6 months to a year after he died, right? At the time I thought I would have liked them better if they always played like that. I appreciate them more now than I did at 15 when Kurt died. My high school was in mourning, and I thought everybody was nuts. I still only own the Unplugged album, and for GnR I only own the greatest hits album, so I guess I can't vote!

Kurt actually sings back-up on Mark Lanegan's version which was recorded in 1989 and released on Lanegan's 1990 album The Winding Sheet, years before Nirvana's version. I believe that's where he got the idea to cover the song for Unplugged.

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with how he's turning out. He still wears the top hat around at least once a week, but the wig makes him itch, so he only wears it occasionally.

Never really liked either band  but my dislike of GnR is far more intense than it is for Nirvana. I never understood how a bunch of overhyped, screeching second-raters got anywhere.. but then it was the 80s

I love the music of both these bands but I'm gonna go with GnR because as tough as this world is, they chose to survive whereas Kurt was a coward and murdered himself.

Ugh... I bought AFD years ago and it is the only CD that I own that has not made it onto my mp3 player because I can't be bothered with it. I found it profoundly boring. I don't like Nevermind much more either. I can't say I like either of these albums much so I'm voting for neither.

But that doesn't make the music of one band better than that of the other. Some people just can't cope with the world and whether or not the creator of the music is dead or alive or killed themselves or lives to be 150 years old I don't think should change how the music is viewed. For me it's about the music, not the personalities behind it. It's sad that Kurt killed himself but it doesn't make me like or dislike his music any more or less.

Nirvana. That was easy haha. My Chem teacher has a bad story about Axl. And I think he's a butt. But I do like some of GnR's music. I just like Nirvana a little bit more.

I loved Nevermind and Kurt Cobain's turn of phrase.
Tori Amos was the one who opened that door for me when she sang "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and I actually learned what the words were.

GnR sure tried their best to kill themselves with the amount of drugs they put away.

Just found this thread!!

I have to go for GnR. It's an absolute classic, no filler at all and was at least something a bit different. LA Guns etc were around but weren't quite as grimy as GnR, they were a bit glam/punk-ish.

Nevermind is a great record but it wasn't new. That scene was huge, it's just that Nirvana broke it into the mainstream. That has led to grunge being entirely associated with one band, which really bugs me! Nirvana are actually one of the worst bands to have come from that Seattle grunge scene. You want Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney etc...
