Hi guys,
Since Stevie has said so many times, especially a few years ago, that she has always wanted and planned to do an album of old jazz/swing/big band type numbers I thought it would be interesting if we could think what songs she would be best at. Which ones would you love to see her do? Of course, I have absolutely no illusions that the album will actually happen but never mind, this could be fun anyway! By the way, I'll usually just put the writers by the songs since they've been recorded so many times:
1. At Last - Etta James (A no brainer since we already know she kicks ASS at it)
2. Someone To Watch Over Me (Gershwin)
3. I've Got A Crush On You (Gershwin)
4. Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (Rogers and Hart)
5. Love Me Or Loeave Me (Donaldson/Kahn. Have to say it wouldn't beat Dors Day's version but I'd love to hear her tackle this one)
I thought I'd start with 5 and see what anyone else adds...
Let the compilation making begin!

"What' ll I Do"- it was in the Great Gatsby film.. I know its from the 20s ish era.. but I know.. Stevie could take the song to a whole other level with the proper arrangements behind her! :)

Great thread idea Dodfather!
Billie Holiday's God Bless The Child. One of the best songs ever. I'd love to hear Stevie backed by a lush, smooth orchestra, but with a nice gritty edge to her voice, please.

Who'd do the male part? My mind immediately went to Chris Isaak.

Something Stupid
Oh god, I hate that song! Those lyrics were indeed something stupid. (IMO)
If we want a Sinatra song, I think The Autumn Of My Life could be interesting, reminiscing on the lovely (past) ages of the songwriter's life. It's most definitely written from a male POV -- but I know Stevie could find a way to re-work the words to celebrate a woman's 'conquests'.......;)
But please no Something Stupid, I Did It My Way, or Strangers In The Night!

If we want a Sinatra song,
If we want another Sinatra song, how about "These Boots were Made for Walking."
Well, I know that's not swing, but . . .

I'd love to hear her do a cover of "The Man I Love", I reckon she could pull it off and well.

The version I love is recorded by Andy Williams and it's not sung as a duet. Frank and Nancy may have made the song famous, but Frank did not write his own songs.

I know Frank didn't write his own material, very few successful singers did at that time. I haven't heard this sung as anything but a duet though so the thought hadn't occured to me. Could be interesting though...

Just thought, and I know this isn't big band at all, but how about Walkin' After Midnight? I think she'd be great at this! We know she can sing that kind of material so maybe the album could just be "standards" of various genres... that might sound weird though.

An album like this would have been incredibly inspired about ten years ago, before the faded-80's-pop-star-does-a-standards-album-because-new-songs-don't-sell business model became cliche.

I have to agree. I'd still love the album to be recorded and released now but it would have been better even a few years ago.
