(CNN) -- Actress Mackenzie Phillips reveals she had a long-term incestuous relationship with her famous father, musician John Philips, in a tell-all memoir, according to People.com, which obtained an advance copy of her book.
Actress Mackenzie Phillips reportedly reveals a family secret to Oprah Winfrey.
Phillips, the 49-year-old former child star and daughter of the Mamas and the Papas founder John Phillips, says she had sex with her father the night before she was to marry Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage, in 1979, according to People.com.
"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it," writes Phillips, who was 19 at the time and a heavy drug user, according to People.com. "I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed."
Phillips, best known as Julie Cooper on the sitcom "One Day at a Time," says the sexual relationship became consensual as her life began to spiral out of control.
During her time on the hit CBS comedy, which ran from 1975 to 1984, she battled drug addiction and underwent drug rehabilitation. She later was fired from the show in 1980 because of her drug abuse. Watch Phillips discuss her arrest »
Eventually, she and her father went to rehab together and she later toured with him in a band called the New Mamas and the Papas, according to People.com.
"I was a fragment of a person, and my secret isolated me," she writes, according to People.com. "One night Dad said, 'We could just run away to a country where no one would look down on us. There are countries where this is an accepted practice. Maybe Fiji.' "
Phillips will reportedly unleash the secret she has kept to herself for 31 years in an interview on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Wednesday. Phillips' book, "High on Arrival," comes out the same day.
Phillips has led a troubled life that has included substance abuse and a 2008 arrest at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of cocaine and heroin possession.
She later pleaded guilty to one count of cocaine possession and was ordered to a drug rehab program.
The interview features Phillips discussing the time she spent hiding in her home, compulsively purchasing items from a television shopping channel as well as the events surrounding her arrest.
In a promotional clip for "The Oprah Winfrey Show," Phillips also says her father shot her up with drugs. John Phillips, who died in 2001, had a well-documented drug problem and was convicted of drug trafficking in 1981. He told many stories of his drug abuse in his memoir, "Papa John."
Mackenzie Phillips also tells Winfrey about an encounter she purportedly had with rock 'n' roll legend Mick Jagger.
"One Day at a Time" co-star Valerie Bertinelli also appears on the Winfrey show in support of Phillips.
Phillips' career as an actress took off when, as a teen, she performed the role of Carol Morrison in the 1973 film "American Graffiti."
In the late 1990s, her career experienced a revival when she began co-starring on "So Weird," a Disney Channel program.

Shocking at first... but, ultimately, I'm not exactly surprised. Its not like we didn't already know John Phillips was a piece of ****.
I wonder what Michelle, Bijou, and Chynna think.

i saw a brief clip of an interview w/ makenzie yesterday & like luke said, it is sad, but it doesn't surprise me one bit~ i always felt bad for mackenzie that she was introduced & encouraged to do drugs at such a young age~ she has led quite a sad, yet somewhat interesting life & i will be buying the book~
she also said when she was 18 yrs old mick jagger came into her room to seduce her & mick comes in, locks the door & tells mackenzie he has been waiting for this moment since she was 10 years old~ i say ewwwwww~

Oh wow guys...I just googled Makenzie cus I wasn't sure what she looked like and I was shocked that SHE is John Phillips daughter. Gosh, I have been under a rock. Totally have seen her everywhere and had no idea. Not to mention....this is horrific. Poor girl. Poor everyone. It's crazy what drugs can do to people.
So, Chyna is her sister, right? Michelle is her mom too? This is terrible. NOT what I wanted to read at the crack of dawn, haha. But thanks for posting.

Pretty brave to admit publicly something that is actually somewhat common in an incestuous (EDIT: there is no such word as "incestual", I don't think...lol) situation.
However it needs to get out and talked about is fine with me. My agency has an entire division devoted to Child Advocacy (children who are victim's of sexual and physical assault) and we just lost a huge chunk of funding. People need to open their eyes and realize what is happening. It IS happening,. I am one of only three therapists in my agency who has been trained to do Trauma Focused CBT therapy, so I see this first hand. I hope that Mackenzie is listened to and recognized as a victim and that this book opens eyes and hearts.

Thanks for the "Amen" in spite of the many typos and grammatical errors. I was at work and typing very fast- :o!
I wanted to add that while her story isn't "new", it is offering another perspective. She wasn't really "consensual" in the way we define it. I didn't get to see Oprah, but I hope this was handled well.

The way it was phrased made me wonder exactly what it was that Jagger actually did. It was a very troubling choice of words, for me.

Anyway, personally I think a lot of things that have gone down for her make a helluva lot more sense now. It's not exactly a nine-days wonder why she would be having these sorts of problems.

Statuatory rape, especially involving incest, is never consensual. For example there's automatically "power issues" involved - the father is a trusted "authority figure," etc.
Anyway i.m.o. it's six of one, half-dozen of the other - I'm totally neutral about whether the temperature of his room in hell will be one million degrees, or ten million........ ;)

She went on to say she did have sex with him that night... her dad ran out for some mayonnaise for tuna salad (weird I know) and thats when Mick 'seduced' her and they locked John out when he came back and spent the night together. She said that was consensual as well...she was 18 at the time

I don't think it could be seen as statutory rape.
she was what? 18 or 19?
the age of consent in California is 18.
she was "legally" an adult.
but consensual or not...it is all kinds of nasty.

Michelle Phillips says she thinks Mackenzie is lying:
“John was a bad parent, and a drug addict. But [expletive deleted] his daughter? If she thinks it’s true, why isn’t she with a good psychiatrist on a couch? I think it’s unconscionable that Oprah would let her do her show. I have every reason to believe it’s untrue. Oprah should be more judicious about who she has on her show.”
Michelle added: “Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She’s had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years. She was arrested for heroin and coke just recently. She did ‘Celebrity Rehab’ and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed.”
http://showbiz411.blogs.thr.com/michelle-phillips-mackenzie-john-phillips-lying-incest/
And his third wife Genevieve Waïte, who he was married to at the time of the alleged affair, also says she believes it isn't true:
"John was a good man who had the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction," Waite said in the statement. "He was incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, of having such a relationship with his own child."
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20090923/ten-uk-phillips-90f61ed.html
But his daughter Chynna believes Mackenzie:
"Somebody could have dropped a piano on my head and I probably wouldn't have felt it," the singer tells Us Weekly. "But I knew it was true. I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?"

So I don't know. I don't think it's as cut and dry as all that. I find it weird to reveal something so awful on a TV talk show I must admit.

It was. Oprah let her tell her story uninterrupted and didn't dig for salacious details. Michelle has come out today and said she is mentally ill. I think it is sad for Michelle just to reject the story out of hand that way. :( But then again, I don't know what is in the bo0k ( which I will be purchasing in a few hours) about Michelle or what her and Mackenzie's relationship is like.

I was wondering what kind of backlash there would be. I'm not surprised that 2 of the stepmothers think she is lying. Who would want to admit that they married that kind of a man?
Although I do think it is weird that she revealed this on Oprah, and it was awkward to watch, I do tend to believe her. Why would someone make that up? The photos they showed of her and John during the timeframe this was going on were kind of creepy. Like boyfriend-girlfriend photos, not father-daughter.
The only reason I can figure for her revealing the secret on Oprah (aside from promoting the book) was to bring awareness to these types of situations and maybe encourage people in those situations to speak out or get help. Also, she may have wanted people to see and hear her talk about it to gauge her credibility. It's easier to gauge when you're watching her rather that only reading her words. She seemed credible to me.
Oh, and how does Michelle Phillips know that Mackenzie is NOT receiving psychatric treatment?

Michelle is the only surviving Mama/Papa, so I'm sure she feels some need to defend the group's legacy- even if it means she has to defend John. I don't mean to be cynical, but she WAS the co-author of California Dreamin' and Creeque Alley- she may very well be envisioning royalties and potential song licensing deals flying out the window, now that a whole new generation mostly associates the band (because of the alleged actions of its primary creative force) with incest.
By the way, has Spanky McFarlane weighed in on this yet? Seems to me she might have a unique perspective on this.

I agree with this. I'd forgotten Denny had died. I certainly won't be listening to their music in the same way. I'm not sure how I feel about listening to them at all to be honest. I suppose I should let the music stand as is.

I do agree with you but I have to admit I'm still on the fence about it all. She was out of her mind on drugs for a long time and she's most probably broke and has a book to sell, but at the same time it's such an awful thing to say you'd have to be ill or twisted to make that kind of accusation without it being true. As I don't know Mackenzie as a person I can't say either way. I do know someone, who was ill, who made such a claim once and later said it wasn't true after he died. I'd be interested to hear what his other children think. If they don't say anything, I'd tend to think they believe her and there must be something to it. So we'll see I guess!

I'm on the fence also. Unfortunately her credibility is a big issue. If she had just released a book that detailed her well publicized drug addiction, it might sell alright, but disclosing details of incest gets you on Oprah and sells tons of books.
I don't necessarily think she would be ill or twisted to make it up. At this stage in her life, being addicted to drugs for decades, having success and set backs, what else does she have to lose? In addition to the publicity, and money it will generate she is also gaining tons of public sympathy. Again, I'm not saying it's not true, but just pointing out some reasons why I would have doubts.

You have a good point. I guess I just project my morals into the situation, i.e. I would NEVER make accusations like that if they weren't true. Doesn't mean other people wouldn't.
I am curious about what her siblings have to say. From your earlier posted quotes, it looks like Chynna believes it. I think she's going to be on Oprah Friday to comment.

I'm compartmentalizing all of this for now- trying not to think about it. "I Saw Her Again" has always been one of my very favorite (top 10 or 20 at least) songs by any artist. A segment of the song is actually my earliest memory of music, and has always given me chills- gives me one right now.

Here's Bijou Phillips statement about it, she pretty much denies it while trying not to alienate Mackenzie:
"When I was 13, Mackenzie told me that she had a consensual sexual relationship with our father. This news was confusing and scary, as I lived alone with my father since I was 3. I didn't know what to believe, and it didn't help that shortly there after Mackenzie told me it didn't happen. Mackenzie’s history with our father is hers, but also clouded with 30 years of drug abuse. I hope she can come to terms with this and find peace. The life I had with my father was very different. He was Mr. Mom, encouraging and loving. The man that raised me would never be capable of doing such things, and if he was, it is heartbreaking to me to think that my family would leave me alone with him. I understand Mackenzie's need to come clean with a history she feels will help others, but it's devastating to have the world watch as we try and mend broken fences, especially when the man in question isn’t here to defend himself."
^ I thought she worded herself well. I can't help but like Bijou. She's been a train wreck and then some. But when I read the account of Mick Jagger discovering her and her brother in her home, decayed teeth and living in a squalor-like mansion, and feeling terrible (MICK JACGGER of all people)...then her heroin addiction at age 15.:distress: So sad and disturbing. I don't have much to say about all this. John Phillips and his poor family were/are all so screwed up. I think Chynna may be the only normal one, though Bijou will always be the cutest in my book. Mackenzie just has my sympathy all the way. What a mess.
camchristo

^Where did you read that about Jagger finding them? I'd like to read that.
I read Bijou's wiki article. I know they are not always accurate, but it said that both John and Genevieve were found unfit to raise the Bijou and Tamerlane and they were put in foster care. After some period of time, I think it said when Bijou was in third grade, John won custody. And then it said she moved to NYC to model when she was 13. So, if that is true, she only lived with John between the ages of 9 and 13. Not from the time she was 3.
I am bothered by the fact that Mackenzie would allow Bijou to be with John alone for any period of time if the allegations were true. But hell, maybe she was still totally screwed up at the time.
Something that bothers me about Bijou's statement. If John was so encouraging and loving, and "Mr. Mom", how did her and her brother end up living in squalor-like mansion with rotten teeth? And how did Bijou and Tamerlane both end up being drug addicts at such young ages? That just smacks of John continuing to be a poor father.
Has anyone seen Tamerlane's you-tube "statement" about this whole thing? (can't remember if it was posted here). Obviously, the family was still f'ed up. He said his family is a bowl of dog urine.
I find it hard to believe that John went from a completely irresponsible derelict father to father of the year between Mackenzie and Bijou. The reason Chynna probably turned out to be the most normal one is that she didn't live with her father and only saw him twice a year (according to her statement on Oprah). The rest of them, the ones that lived with him, all turned out to be drug addicts (except Jeffrey - I don't know anything about him). Pretty telling, I think.

Cammie there's absolutely no doubt John Phillips was a terrible, awful, scummy parent. I'm not sure what happened that the courts awarded him custody of Bijou in the 80s but maybe he had sorted himself out briefly. There are definitely holes in her statement but I still wonder why she would write a statement like that if she thought he was guilty.
Here's the Tamerland clip, he basically says he doesn't know if it's true or not because he went to boarding school growing up, he says the allegations "are very surprising to me" and just endorses the Indian guru he follows, and says his family is a bowl of "dog urine" compared the guru:
"My family is a bowl of dog urine compared to Nityananda of Ganeshpuri. That is how wealthy, beautiful, intelligent, famous and genius he is compared to us."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3z9CF2LCtQ
Weird. Also, apparently he's broke. Mackenzie is in the same position.Who is getting all John Phillips' royalties then?
So I'm still on the fence really. I'm saying this as someone who isn't really much of a fan of John Phillips. They are definitely a messed up family but I still don't know if I believe Mackenzie. The Oprah thing and the book thing, really bother me. Plus the only other person in the family who has come out in support of Mackenzie is the daughter who had hardly anything to do with him growing up. But I'm also troubled by the fact that if Mackenzie told everybody in the family about this years ago (as Michelle, Chynna and Bijou have said) when he was still alive, even if she recanted, surely at least one of them confronted him about it? I know I would have. So that's weird too.
camchristo
09-26-2009, 03:29 PM
Sharon, good points. Who is getting the royalties?
And I thought that was weird also. Michelle, Chynna and Bijou all admitted that Mackenzie told them about this 12 or 13 years ago (or more?). And nobody confronted him about it? I certainly would have. But who knows? Maybe they were all being supported by him and didn't want to piss off the money train. But still.
I was just doing some more reading about Bijou online. She moved to NYC to model and got her own apartment in NYC when she was 14. Living on her own with her own housekeeper and car service. Left to her own devices to drink, drug and club. That time period coincides with when Mackenzie told her about the relationship with her father. Maybe Bijou thought there was something to it and got the hell out of there.
One of the articles I read (damn, I should have copied the links while I was reading) said that she had previously condemned her parents for basically letting her do the **** she did with no parental supervision. Letting her act like an adult instead of making her be a kid. Then, after John died, she totally changed her story and said that John was a great dad. Took her to school everyday, made her breakfast and dinner. That is weird. EDIT: Here's the link - interesting read: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2002/mar/03/features.magazine
Another article was talking about a song she wrote. I can't remember the name but the interviewer was asking her about the lyrics. She said the song was about her dad. One of the lyrics was "He touched me wrong". She said she used her songs to talk about things. The interviewer said the lyric was pretty blatant. She then did a 180 and said "It's just a song". So, ???? EDIT: Here is the other link - yeah, it's from Perez, whom I can't stand, but he is quoting it from an earlier interview, which I didn't find: http://perezhilton.com/2009-09-26-was-bijou-phillips-involved-with-her-father-too Here is the link to the full interview quoted in that Perez page. http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/39527122.html?page=2 There is some f'ed up **** in this article. She admits to having daddy issues and trying to make him jealous by dating a hot young rock star. And she has a "Daddy" tatoo on her ass. This interview is from 2000. It is copied and pasted to the lj site but the source is linked at the bottom.
Nobody will ever know except those involved. It's just an intriguing story to me. And a sick and sad one - no matter what the truth is. I think I'm going to read Mackenzie's book. I'm interested.
I know quite a bit about Bijou for some reason...it's a mystery to me but it might have something to do with her being the exact same age as me, being somewhat of a "celebrity" during the era when MTV would put anything perverse into their brief 'news' bits and all of those stories were somehow transformed into extended articles in "Rolling Stone" magazine when it was trying to become more "hip."
Here's one of the articles re: Bijou (http://www.indexmagazine.com/interviews/bijou_phillips.shtml) and a lovely little blurb of her amazing childhood:
BRUCE: It says in the book that Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall were baby-sitting you once when your parents were going through heroin withdrawal, and Mick and Jerry wouldn't give you back to them because they were too ****ed up. And then your father tried to burn down his own house. Do you remember that?
BIJOU: No. I was only three. My dad went to jail at the time, and no one would give my mom money.
BRUCE: But she had lots of rich, celebrity friends.
BIJOU: My parents ****ed so many people over that no one wanted to talk to either of them. Me and my mom ended up sleeping on the street.
BRUCE: You weren't sleeping on the street!
BIJOU: Yeah, we slept on the street a couple of nights, in doorways. And we had to steal food.
BRUCE: I read that your dad was a real grifter.
BIJOU: At one point, he bought a drugstore so he wouldn't have to cop on the street anymore.
BRUCE: And before he became famous he was a mailman, but he was too lazy to deliver the mail so he'd just throw it away.
BIJOU: He's just dumb.
BRUCE: Tell me about the new song you wrote — the one you were singing in the car on the way back from lunch.
BIJOU: The one about my dad? It sort of speaks for itself. I've made this decision not to talk to the press about anything that's gone on in my life, but just to write music about it. They can interpret it themselves.
BRUCE: There seemed to be some improprieties going on. You're talking about stuff in your music that's pretty heavy. Has anyone articulated it for you in the press?
BIJOU: No one has the balls to do it.
Fact: she has dentures now, put in at age 20, due to all her teeth being so rotten that no amount of dental work could actually repair them.

^That's from the article that I linked in my post above. It was quoted in a livejournal blog, but it sourced the index article in the blog.
