Thank you Alicia for posting these articles. I enjoyed them very much!

3. Oh, the Rolling Stone cover. You’re gonna love this story. This was basically a nightmare picture for me. This was taken by Richard Avedon. You know, it’s not every day that you get work with Richard Avedon, so this was a very big deal. It just so happened that this was taken right after Mick and I had broken up. We’d just ended the year-long relationship thing we had going on and things were very tense. We get to the shoot and Richard Avedon has this ladder set up and he tells me that he basically wants me to be hanging around Mick’s neck in the photo and that the rest of the band will basically be sitting around Mick’s feet. He had this whole composition already worked out. I’m looking at him like, Are you out of your mind? First of all, I’m not even speaking to Mick Fleetwood and I’m certainly not climbing up on a ladder and then hanging around his neck. I’m not touching him! So, I pulled him aside and told him that I really didn’t want to do it. Avedon looks at me and basically just tells me that I needed to just suck it up and do the photo. He’s like, this is the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and in 10 years you’ll be glad that you did this. Now, do it. So, I reluctantly agreed. Up I go on the ladder. I was literally hanging around Mick’s neck like a mink stole. I kept feeling like I was going to fall and Mick was trying to hold me up…it was horrific.

This reminds me of the photo shoot for the Buckingham Nicks album cover when her father told her she could have just said "no."

Another cool thing for me was when stevie says she's still the same basic person she was at age 15. For a few years now I've been telling my neices and nephews the same thing about me.

Me thinks she doth protest too much...

Oh, and when she said Lindsey didn't speak to "them" for weeks, she really meant he didn't speak to her for weeks...

Pretty much. It always amazes me reading these accounts of how rampant insecurity, jealousy, and resentment were in the band back in their heyday. You think the psychotic success would quell that some. But I suppose it can also have the opposite effect.

Lindsey's daughters wanting to wear her platform boots and capes? Very funny. I'm sure Lindsey just loves that. Thanks for posting!

Is there a Stevie photo shoot that went smoothly?

Awesome articles! Thanks so much for sharing :)

I read this quote and it slightly broke my heart:

I really think it has changed him though, and I think it’s made it easier for him to accept who I am and to deal with me. He’s less apt to argue with me these days and he’s more apt to understand what I say and not take it personally. I think he understands now that I really do always have his best interests at heart. He used to understand that, back in the beginning, but after we broke up he didn’t feel that way.
(Emphasis mine.)

*Sigh*

Excellent articles because we got new info and not things we'd already heard a million times. Thank you!

Yeah, I'm glad that Lindsey finally understands that Stevie only has his best interest at heart!

Does anyone have the uncropped Richard Avedon photo? I have seen it before. He was right to insist on that great composition.

these were great, thanks so much for posting! I love to hear Stevie talk about the behind the scenes stuff about the photo shoots, etc. Very interesting about the Rolling Stone cover. I think that was pretty ****ty of RS to crop everyone else out, being that the words "Fleetwood Mac" were on the front of the cover, not "Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood". I don't blame the band for being pissed off, even though it wasn't Stevie and Mick's fault. But, being that this is a Stevie story, I can't help think that there may be just a BIT more to the story, ya know?

I also love Stevie's take on her wardrobe. She speaks about her various outfits/looks through the years with such reverence, she almost sounds like she's a fan herself, the way she speaks as if she's looking at herself. I suppose she's always had this ability, especially in her writing. I think in many of her songs, she's talking about herself and her life in the third person. She does the same thing in interviews. It was cool to hear about how she came to purchase the infamous top hat. I don't know, just hearing that she bought it in a antique store with Christine just makes it all the more magical. That's just how you would expect Stevie to find that hat...in a dusty antique store somewhere with the elegant Christine McVie telling her she needs to own that hat!

Yeah, quite frankly, I don't think I would have even participated in that pose sitting on the floor at their feet. I know a Rolling Stone cover and story is very important publicity, but at what price glory? As one of the other 3, I would have just refused to do that pose.

Yes, I remember Cory describing how Stevie was showing her her old capes and costumes and telling her to try them on. Cory was scared to do so. She didn't want to damage anything. Stevie described each item she had worn and when. It was almost as if Stevie was taking Cory through a museum. The thing is, I think Cory said Stevie had many of her old pieces with her on the road during SYW, even the ones she could no longer fit into. So, it sounds like Stevie is traveling history.

I agree. That pose is so symbolic, considering the star status of Stevie within the band. It must have pissed them off, none of the three look real happy. And then to have them cropped out is like salt in the wound. Ouch!

I read that Annie Leibovitz has to repay a $24 million dollar loan by tomorrow or the bank would lay claim to all of her copyrighted work. I'm sure much of her stuff would go up for sale, to reap swift royalties.

It made me wonder what unseen FM shots she might have in her collection.

John and Christine never looked so glamorous in their lives, what a stunning out-take that photo is. I also think it is absolutely striking of Lindsey, who looks all of 21, maybe, in it. I'd never cared much for that RS cover, I didn't think it did Stevie much justice at all. But dang, Lindsey and Christine and John look gorgeous (well, I mean, for John). I think this photo belongs on a cover of something now, be it re-release of a cd, dvd, or even a book. Really, really nice shot.

PS- DAMN Lindsey looks sexy there! He probably knew it, no wonder he didn't speak to Stevie for 2 weeks :)

Well, technically it's not an outtake, the full shot was used (as a full page) in the magazine next to the article. I agree the rest of the band look great in it though. I've always thought it was a weird shot, not just because of the awful pose, but Stevie just looks so uncomfortable. It's not the most flattering photo of her I think.

I had a subscription to Rolling Stone at that time and I remember pulling it out of my mailbox and being blown away by this cover. It was on my wall for many, many years. It's not an insult to the rest of the band. After all it was Mick and Stevie on the cover of Rumours and not the rest of the band. I just think Rolling Stone Magazine wanted to portray that view to the world.
I do remember thinking that Stevies' boob must have hurt her, being squished into Mick's shoulder like that, so in that sense Sharon I'd agree with you.

I totally agree. The three of them look incredible (And Lindsey is beyond hot!!!). However, I think it's one of Stevie's worst photos ever. Her uneasiness about the whole shoot is written all over her face. She would have done better to not smile at all, instead of that forced, completely nerved out smile. I don't like her outfit either. :(

Thanks for the correction that it wasn't an outtake photo- I dug out my Rolling Stone Cover to Cover dvd and re-read the article, which was very wordy but oddly had a lot of observations and not a lot of band quotes- I don't think Christine was interviewed at all for it. It mainly covered the band rehearsing for the Tusk tour, I think in Oct. of 79, the issue is dated as very early 1980. Anyone else have the RS dvdrom? I like it, though it isn't the easiest thing for me to navigate it on my iBook G4, a cpl yrs ago when I bought it, I went in and did all the Stevie and Fleetwood Mac searches, but either overlooked or didn't see the full page photo. Thanks.

Stevie was absolutely bricking it there, to say the least, and it shows. I can almost imagine her screaming between shots.

It was before any of us knew who Sharon Celani was, so when the article mentioned Sharon (no last name) & described her as Stevie's beautiful girlfriend, we assumed the pretty brunette shown in one of the photos was that Sharon. But actually it was Sharon Weisz, a band publicist. The satin sports jacket she's wearing with her name embroidered was on sale later at Rockaway Records in Glendale, & I bought it!

In case you don't check nicksfix with any frequency, they have a link to this blog where Stevie describes her look in a few old memorable photos:

it's storytelling as only Stevie can tell.

We're about to embark on an enormous tour, & we need the airhead to pull in the crowds (& the revenue). So let's highlight her for all she's worth.

In fact, I'd have requested that the writer, Daisann McLane, emphasize Stevie a lot more in the story itself.

Good business is good business!
