View Full Version : Wrote a letter...

So I have written a fan letter, but i'm debating on sending it. do you think it's dumb to send fan mail to celebrities? LOL I guess i figure if it gets returned then the Marines will think i'm dumb for writing fan mail! I pretty much just said that I thought I could relate cause i get percieved a certain way and that I really enjoy her music and that I commend her for visiting my brothers and sisters in arms who are injured and hope that she continues to do so because we need more compassionate people in this life and others! And couple of other things

The best fan letters are those that criticize the object of the fanaticism. I once wrote a letter to Jacques Barzun, criticizing some of his conclusions in his then-recent book A Word Or Two Before You Go. He wrote back -- a long letter -- getting into detail on each point I made, disagreeing with many but agreeing with a few. I was thrilled.

But a fan letter that just says I LOVE YOU SO MUCH doesn't really give the recipient much to enjoy, paradoxically enough. (People like being told they are loved by intimates, not strangers.)

Some stars, or so I've heard, even get a bit creeped out by such gush.

So I would say go ahead & write your fan letter -- but say something.

Mmmh never thought of it that way and who is Jacques Barzun. The only criticism I have with Stevie Nicks is that I think that she contradicts herself on the whole Wicca (i don't say witch because there's a difference between practicing Witchcraft and practicing Wicca) thing, because I myself am a practicing Wiccan and she seems to contradict herself when she says no i'm not, but I'm not a black magic witch (ok then what does that mean exactly?), etc idk that's just what i'm picking up on. I think she's just afraid to admit it, but i'm not going to start a debate, nor will I complain about that in a letter! I think that would be rude. Idk hell i've never written a fan letter before!

That's cool that you are going to write a letter. My question is, where are you going to send the letter? Do we know where Stevie lives? And even so, does she check her own mail? Do you think she'll really get it. I hope she does though.

Guys i already wrote it! read my first post! I stated that I wrote it and included what I wrote! I am just debating on if I want to send it, because if it got returned it will go to my company and Marines are nosy! They'll laugh and be like hey she wrote a fan letter to a celebrity! all that bs that joining the Marines gives you confidence it's a lie! LOL Recruiters do lie! Anyway....bad mood today had a irritating day at work...

In your opinion, are good fan letters exclusively criticizing ones? Or do you think that sometimes a person can have such a specific and unique message to convey to a musician/writer/etc. that it is worth sending? Granted, much of that is based on the writer's definition of "specific and unique" in this case... but I ask because I think I have something to say, I really do.

Anyway, I think that she'd eat up the fact that you're a Marine. Send it-- I highly doubt it will get returned to you and what's the worst that can happen, you don't get a response?

I sent the letter, hopefully i'll get a reply it'd be cool cause I just think that it's so admirable that she's overcome what she has and continued to strive and like i indicated in my letter i've done the same I lost both my adopted parents(when I was 16 and before going to bootcamp my dad died) but I didn't let it beat me i wanted to accomplish being the Marines and I did it. Granted I haven't done what alot of Marines, i've never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan to be honest I am a conscientious objector I learned that after 3 years I was asked if I wanted to go to Afghanistan but I said no. Sometimes I kick myself, because I don't feel as up to par as the rest of the Marines who've gone but I won't be responsible for the death of someone else be it Marine or an enemy yet I would never want anything to happen to my brothers or sisters. But i've grown as a person, and I have learned about myself and was in Japan for two years. I'm rambling i'm gonna shut up!

But if ~GoldDustWoman~ doesn't tell Stevie how much she loves her, who will? Some graphic artist from Ann Harbor, MI?

I think one thing to keep in mind is what Lady GaGa said in between her lines in the song "Paparazzi" -

"I'm your biggest fan, I'll follow you until you love me
Papa, paparazzi
Baby, there's no other superstar, you know that I'll be
Your papa, paparazzi" - - -

Stevie doesn't do the Edge Walk to get more stuffed animals - she's got plenty of those. She does it 'cause she loves the fans, and because she loves all the
attention and the love people are trying to give her. Who wouldn't?

Point being, I have a sneaky feeling Stevie is used to receiving fan letters and wouldn't be terribly shocked or upset if she received one more. ;)

By the way, it's hard to know what to believe, of course, but I've heard that she at least makes an effort to read every single one of them. Time permitting, of course; and naturally they're "screened" by John Kinney and Karen first. But yeah, I've heard she at least tries to. Which she would only be doing if she enjoyed receiving them, of course....

And, really - it doesn't say on Nicksfix, "Don't send fan letters to Stevie" or "If you MUST send Stevie a Fan Letter..."

It says flat-out, "Fan letters may be sent to Stevie at the address below." It's an open invitation and i.m.o. it's intended to be exactly that.

The letters are submitted to the nicksfix. I would think that most fan letters that say what David mentioned about being her biggest fan and what not probably get thrown away. Letters that they feel may be of interest to Stevie probably get forwarded to a more personal address and then reviewed by her assistant Karen, or some other administrative person. If at that point they feel it warrants being shown to Stevie directly, she'll be given the letter. If a letter makes it directly to Stevie through these channels I think there is a good chance she would reply. I doubt that many letters ever do get to her though.

I sent the letter

This is sweet. And everyone enjoys being told they're loved and that they've been a positive influence on and an inspiration to someone else. For most people that never gets old. And as for getting a response, you never know . . .

In 1994 I wrote her a 64 page letter but never sent it. I re-read it once and then tossed in back in the closet again. I'm glad I never sent it. When I'm older than I am now I'll want to read it again to remember how I felt about her then.

Well that takes dedication! I'm interested in what drove you to feel that strongly. Another perk of this forum: I'm apparently not the only person who feels completely changed by some aspect of Stevie/Mac. It's comforting to hear.

It was everthing I ever wanted to say to her. I started in 1976 when I first heard her sing Rhiannon on the radio and went year by year from there.

I just wrote in a diary the other night of an experience I had in May and that took 11 pages. And that's just from a one hour conversation with some guy.

I once thought of writing a letter to Stevie, explaining how her music helped me through a difficult time, but I never got around to it. And then I lost interest. :)

Vicfox, I was glad to see your manifesto took years to write. A 64 page in-one-sitting fan letter made me nervous. :o

I have a letter a started but not finished.I keep thinking she probably hears the same stuff over and over so I wanted to say something besides I'm your biggest fan or whatever lol I want it to be special .. Even if it may not actually make it to her. But I'd like to let her know what an impact she's had on my life with her music and it's helped me through some hard times ect. But I think it's a lovely idea! :)

Honestly, I do not see how I could have made it through my freshman year of college (aka fall of last year through the spring of this one) without Stevie's music in my life. There was so much drama going on all around me and to be able to escape with my iPod and Stevie's albums, live shows, interviews, etc at night was amazing to me.

... And it helped to keep me from absolutely breaking down and quitting school.

Jannie, you mis-understood me. It wasn't written throughout the years. It probably took me less than a week. I took from memory all the things I wanted to say to her about each song or album that had a great effect on me. But it was actually one line I wrote in that long letter that I convinced myself would not be a good idea to send it.

So Jannie you can get nervous now.

What address are you sending this to?

I tried sending my Stevie letter to an arena on their concert tour- but it came back in the mail, so I'm thinking about sending one to a different address.

In 2004 I sent a letter to Stevie through the fan mail address posted on the nicksfix. Four months later I received a package in the mail with the nicksfix address in the corner and I about died

I can't believe I was only 14 when I wrote Stevie that letter and that she actually read and responded (even though I didn't ask her to). On the autographed picture she sent me, she thanked me for my "beautiful letter" and said she "enjoyed it so much." In my letter I had also mentioned how much I loved Live in Boston (it was the only Mac dvd I owned at the time), so I'm assuming that's why she also sent me an autographed Live in Boston dvd too. It was signed with her name on the outside and the inside said 'To Amber' and had her little heart with wings thing she likes to draw.

Oh in the picture she also put 'To Amber'- "Always be Amber"-- I thought that was so cool that she quoted her own unreleased song like that for me.

So needless to say people, send your fan letters! You never know, you might get something back!!

Here's what's going through my mind now:

We should all write Stevie a letter & send it. We all individually pick a body part & each letter-writer says: "I love the way your little brown mole crinkles up when the skin on your xxxxxxxx moves."

One of us is bound to guess the body part correctly -- after all, how many body parts does Stevie Nicks have?

It will freak her out! She'll think: "Oh my God! How does this person know that my mole is on my xxxxxx?!"

Oh, how you hide your tender feelings behind a veil of brusque humor. If you've kept a journal of everything that Stevie's life and music means to you, you should share it. Don't be afraid or timid. No one here will judge you. I'm sure there's nothing you can say that someone here hasn't also felt just as strongly.

I myself am seized with both OCD and excessive sloth. I am currently writing a movie review that will surely be 69 pages or longer, but it's going to take me about 2 years to finish it. I am already one year in. Sigh.

I'm with Michele on this one. If I write a letter, I will be pouring a LOOOOOOOOOOOOT into it and I'm not exactly comfortable with that. I still wanna do it and maybe even share it on here. I think everyone should, including (if not especially) you.

I really agree with David's point about making critical comments. I mean, they don't have to consist of negative criticism, but I think you have to say something analytical, insightful and specific.

I remember when I was in college, Lawrence Kasdan came to speak to us and I was really trying to ask him if he got more satisfaction when he wrote something meaningful as opposed to something salacious, but commercially successful. But trying to phrase the comment, so that it would not insult, I worded my question awkwardly. So, all he heard basically was, "I really loved Body Heat" and he responded accordingly, which really made me mad, because that's not what I'd said and it certainly wasn't what I'd meant to convey.

I probably didn't write anything she hasn't heard before other than we need more compassionate people in this world and how i appreciated that she visits the wounded military, and that i haven't deployed.
