Hi everyone,

Yes, you read correctly...I've just made a covers mix tape for my car (it's old and doesn't have a cd player!) so thought I;d share it with you and see what you thought... You'll probably get an idea of my music taste from it too...

I love finding random cover versions, the more unusual the better, especially if they're by some of my favourite artists. I kind of collect them so if you know of any others I might like after looking at this list let me know.

It's a bit mainstream because I decided to go with a selection of my favourite covers, so you'll know a fair few, if not all, of them. I also was of course stuck because I don't own all the ones Iwant to, so that's why there's nothing from Shelby Lynne's wonderful Dusty Springfield covers album! I've had it on sppotify for ages, must buy it soon...

What I really meant by this thread was that it would be cool if others could let us all know what their favourite covers are, and what they think are the worst too of course!

Here's my tape:

Side A

1. Sugarland - Irreplaceable (Beyonce)
2. Stevie Nicks - At Last (Etta James)
3. Counting Crows - Return Of The Grievous Angel
4. Neil Young - Oh, Lonesome Me (Don Gibson)
5. Sara Evans - Every Little Kiss (Bruce Hornsby and The Range)
6. Kate Bush - Sexual Healing (Marvin Gaye)
7. Sister Hazell - Gold Dust Woman (Fleetwood Mac)
8. Linda Ronstadt - Tracks Of My Tears (Smokey Rombinson)
9. Emmylou Harris - To Daddy (Dolly Parton)
10. Bonnie Raitt - Thing Called Love (John Hiatt) (Tough call between this or Runaway)
11. Amy Winehouse - Valerie (The Zutons)

Side B

1. Carpenters - A Song For You (Leon Russell)
2. Alison Krauss - Carolina In My Mind (James Taylor)
3. Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee (Kris Kristofferson)
4. Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night (Roy Orbison)
5. Nora O'Connor - That's Alright (Fleetwood Mac)
6. Counting Crows - Borderline (Madonna)
7. Dixie Chicks - Landslide (Fleetwood Mac)
8. 10, 000 Maniacs - Because The Night (Patti Smith)
9. Dusty Springfield - Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa (Gene Pitney)
10. The Beatles - Roll Over Beethoven (Chuck Berry)
11. Linda Ronstadt - Willin' (Little Feat)
12. Dolly Parton - Drive Me Crazy (Fine Young Cannibals)

Phew! There you have it... I'm usually quite strict with myself and for a mix I try to limit myself to only one song per artists but I love the 2 Counting Crows ones so much... As for the Linda Ronstadt ones well, let's face it I could make an entire collection of her covers alone and not find a bad one there! Maybe I'll do that next...

Oh, and a few worst cover versions. My top/bottom 3:

Tori Amos - Heart Of Gold (Neil Young).
Now I love Tori, I really do, and was looking forward to this, but it is unlistenable. Worst. Cover. Ever.

All Saints - Under The Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
In the name of God, what were they thinking?! Missed the point of the song entirely.

Mariah Carey - Bringin' On The Heartbreak (Def Leppard)
What the?!? How dare she..??

Thoughts anyone? What covers do you love or hate....?

Good choices. It looks like you will really enjoy these songs. Did you know that Patti Smith is a cover artist on Because the Night? Yeah it's a song written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen. However, I don't think he released his version until AFTER she had a hit with it. I'm sure someone else will let us know...

Actually I'm not sure you could call her version a cover as Smith is listed as a co-writer, along with Springsteen, on Because The Night :)
Springsteen originally wrote it for the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album but couldn't find a place for it. Smith was working at the studio next door and he gave it to her and she re-wrote the lyrics from a female perspective. A studio version of Springsteen's take has never been released but he often performs it in concert. There's a live version on his Live 75-85 album.

That's true. His version didn't come out until later. I think the same is true for Dolly Parton's 'To Daddy'.

Some interesting stuff here. I love Cassandra Wilson and most of her stuff is covers so I wont bore people with a list of what she has recorded.

Other than Jazz covers , I like Natalie Merchant singing Neil Young's After the Goldrush. Worst - Wilson Phillips as I've said elsewhere......

Because the night - entirely written by Springsteen (ever word of the PS recording) but entirely owned by Patti Smith. The reasons for the co-credit are well know but she paid the cash so I guess you were right to say that it was a Patti Smith song - she was the only person who ever owned it!
