If you went to see Stevie during the Rock A Little tour, post here! Tell us anything you remember from that night...share your stories with us all. :) RAL is my personal favorite era of live Stevie. :blob1:

"I wasn't going to talk on this tour. But I have to tell you something very special. They asked me when they were making my tour, where do I want to start. And I said - Houston!"

Here's the opening night setlist, though some stuff was dropped later on. (like Gypsy, Sara, Gold Dust Woman)

Gold Dust Woman
Outside the Rain
Dreams
Talk to Me
I Need to Know
No Spoken Word
Sara
Beauty and The Beast
I Can't Wait
Gypsy
Leather and Lace
Stand Back
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
How Still My Love
Edge of Seventeen
Rhiannon
HAEWAFY

So please share your stories if you got to see any of the dates on this tour.

I wasn't there, but my mother went to the Boston show and she said Stevie was an absolute mess. She doesn't remember much, but she says that Stevie kept tossing her head back during ICW and almost fell off the stage a bunch of times.

I can vouch for that- Mama was a hot mess during her show at the Capitol Center in Largo, MD. From where I sat, she was a blur of chiffon and frizzy hair with all the head banging, even during the slower numbers. And she basically vamped throughout the entire show- every other line had a "well" or "baby" inserted into it. So it was such a surprise to see the stoic, mummified-but-living-corpse of Stevie just one year on the TITN tour.

I saw Stevie for the RAL tour in Baton Rouge. I brought a pastel portrait I made of her and gave it to Christopher to give to her and he did. He then said she wanted to meet me. I was only 17 at the time so you can imagine how freaked out I was. I was taken to her dressing room where she sat holding my sketch! Apparently she had an issue with how I had depicted her eye makeup. She then taught me how she did her's by applying eyeliner to me! I swear it was so surreal. She then wrote me a lovely poem on my RAL tourbook. I hugger her and kissed her cheek goodbye. Her managers escorted me out to a hallway where I got to met Waddy and Sharon. Then I was able to hang out and watch the show with Rebecca Alvarez backstage. It was awesome!

Wow, how amazing! And Stevie's eye makeup was interesting on this tour. LOL I think she fired the makeup artist and did it herself. ;) That's really wild that you got to share that moment with her. What did you think of her when you first met her?

Do you mind sharing the poem she wrote for you?

Come on Bubba post yours too - we take 'em all! I'm serious though they are all exciting to read. Your WH story was great, what did you think about the change in stevie from those 2 tours?

For this tour, I saw her at Fingerlakes, outside of Rochester, NY. Her set list was almost identical to the one listed above, though she did not play "Gold Dust Woman."

What I remember was her voice was pretty frayed through most of the set, though she performed Beauty and the Beast perfectly. She changed costumes for almost every song. The crowd went bonkers when she began singing "I Can't Wait."

In the middle of the show, she got anxious and, either from excitement or agitation, threw her tambourine way up over the back of her head and it landed somewhere backstage, far behind the drummer's kit. I remember wondering if some poor stage hand might have gotten hit by it.

Another recollection: there was some sound problems during Outside the Rain which made her turn away from the microphone in disgust. The sound was remedied by the third or fourth song.

I'm not sure if she did Rhiannon during Rock a Little......:)
of course she did~ i saw that tour in april of 1986, in lincoln, nebraska~ was an awesome show~ i gave her a pale pink shawl & she wore it for "no spoken word" & i about died!!!~
here's a pic my ma took of stevie wearing my shawl, i was front show, my mom was 9th~
http://i25.tinypic.com/29l1u2h.jpg

here's my story from the other ral thread~ but i'd like to add, my dad died when i was 16 & he knew how much i loved stevie~ & we knew how much he disliked our mom (she turned into a horrible woman), on his death bed i remember him crying & telling my mom, that if stevie ever came close she better take me~ & the ral show was 2 days off from being exactly a year ago my dad passed~

i remember hearing the first concert announcement while i was sleeping, i woke up & told everyone stevie was coming & the all laffed~ i thought the whole thing was a dream~

I saw the Rock A Little tour in LA, at the Forum, and I think it was the first time I had been to the Forum since Mac's amazing '82 Mirage concert I went to. I remember a few things about the show- one that stands out was that at the conclusion of I think every song, there was a person who would appear near the edge of the stage, light a cigarette, and Stevie would walk off stage as she took the lit cigarette from the person- I think it was a woman, but honestly, I don't remember for sure.
I was depressed because I had to take a bus to and from the concert and was thinking about how much my life had changed since '82 and then '83 when I drove out to the US festival with friends. A few years later, my car was totalled, my education was stalled and incomplete, and for the RAL show, I had to, or chose to, go alone, because I couldn't afford a second ticket! Circa 1986, LA became very tough for me. After the show, at the bus-stop, groan, I met an Asian guy just about my age, who spoke very little English, but was able to convey how much he liked Stevie Nicks. He also knew how to try to pick up on me. I'm not racist a bit, but I figured I needed someone who could speak the language (more than 'stevie nick and d*ck') and had more than a bus pass, like myself. "I can do bad all alone" I think was my attitude in those days.
I told the cigarette story to my best friend Rea, who had to work and couldn't go to the concert; she seemed shocked --"Stevie's smoking?"-- when RAL came out, we had both commented how her voice had seemed much more vibrant on 'The Wild Heart' than on 'Rock A Little,' and after I told her the cigarette after every song at The Forum story, Rea was sure the cigs were the reason for her voice changing, not the drugs, which we figured she's always done, from the start.
I do recall 'I Can't Wait' was performed, and some of the music seemed pre-programmed, and the song was too slow, live. Stevie could have performed the song well live, except she was improvising a lot of the lyrics and that didn't work too well, because she seemed to lose her place, a lot. I'd always loved Stevie's variations on her recordings at her concerts, the records were always kewl but to me, when she sang the songs live, they were even more impressive. In the case of 'I Can't Wait,' I think she could have knocked it out of the ball park had she stuck with the recorded lyrics... I recall part of an early verse when she sang something like "Sometimes she wakes up and then she really wakes up" and it was just a hot mess, oh well!
But mainly, I remember that person walking to the edge of the stage who would light the cigarette just precisely at the moment when Stevie would be about to reach out her hand for it.
I also (s0mewhat) recall that Stevie seemed to wear some kind of odd pants during the show- like leggings, maybe? But they only seemed to come to just past her knees, they were odd looking to me. I seem to remember more than one pair of them being worn during the show, too- I don't think I'm wrong about this, but I won't swear to it. I just remember the pants or whatever they were- were odd.
In any case, I think she should try to do 'I Can't Wait' again, any time now. Just stick to the RAL lyrics.

What an awesome thread!
I wish I could've been at one of the concerts in '86, but somehow I think that would not have been a healthy environment for a 2 yr old

I have very little memory of this show, other than that I went. We wrote "Stevie or Bust!" in red lipstick on the back window of my camaro and blasted the tunes all the way to Jones Beach. I don't remember her sounding crappy because I had never seen her live before and I just remember being totally mesmerized. I have realized that I confuse this show (in my mind) with the OSOTM show.

The Rock A Little Tour was my first time seeing Stevie in concert the first show was at the hartford civic center in hartford,CT on May 2, 1986 this was at the begining of the tour I believe I went with my mom i was 16 at the time now i am 39, I told my mom we got to get there early for some reason so we were there early we were waiting in fron the doors to where they would let you in we did hear the sound check and shortly after they did a few songs a while after i see some people come in out and on the end door didn't recognize them at all and then two ladies one i did recognize it was sharon celani and the other woman with her was jennifer condos they both came from wendys with a few bags of food and they trying to open the door so i went over to the door that people we coming in and out of and opened it for them and they both smiled and said thank you and after they left i said to my mom that was stevie nicks back up singer sharon celani i found out it was jennifer condos the bass player inside the concert afterwards if i only could have said to her if it possible to meet stevie i wondered if it would of happened then but it took to see stevie this year in march 2009 at a cd signing in nyc to finally meet her which never though was possible. i loved this tour. i remember stevie opening with Gold Dust Woman and incredible show she came out in this beautiful black velvet cloak for rhiannon and at the end of the song she took down the microphone and stand with her when she twirled and fell to the ground with the song she was high at both shows i went

second show was New Haven Colisuem in New Haven,ct on July 29, 1986
she had peter frampton open at this show this was torwards the end of the tour weeks before she went into the betty ford clinic she was flying high at this show awesome show yes lot of head banging with standback and I can't wait voice very raspy on this tour too if i remember some one gave her a beautiful gold chain or charm she mentioned at the show and said thank you to who ever gave it to her she was going to cherish it i remember her almost falling off the stage at this show too.

Lots of girls dressing like stevie at the shows i think it was more so than today really

I was FAR from front row! But it was then that I told myself I would make it to that front row some day and touch Stevie's hand. It wasn't until the Gold Dust Tour that this actually happened-lol. :)

You were still there, though-- that's more than I can say. I've only seen Stevie/FM twice (TISL and Unleashed) and although I had awesome seats to both (3rd for TISL and 1st for Unleashed), I still didn't get to see the magic in which is the earlier tours. :(

It's just another excuse to make up for all that lost time now that I am able to see them. :) They better be ready to see my hysterical screaming/cying/singing face right next to the stage every night of a potential upcoming tour. I am DETERMINED.

Let see it i remember,I went to see Stevie at the old New Haven Colisium"now gone from the New Haven skyline" in my old 1969 Firebird with a bad engine, i got there early to get some tee's and aprograms i had crappy seats, I remember this young girl dressed up like Stevie telling me to move down, due to i was sitting in her seat,at the time i must of misread the ticket stub and move down to the right seat.,as Peter Frampton hit the stage, he's awesome, which i like his tunes anyway,It was real awesoime to hear "Show Me The Way" like the record.,the only problem with his set,was they had the volume to high and it was distorted, then when Stevie came out and of course I feel the energy from her when she starts to sing her set, swhe was fine to me as I remembered 25 years ago.I recorded the show on a crappy walkman which security did not bother finding it i guess those days they did not bother looking for cameras and recorders at the time.At this time with a crappy paid job and a old car, I could not afford to go on out of state trips like today, so i had to stick to the local concerts in the state.that what I got out of my head for now,If I think of any more ,I will add later.

I remember I used to take a small recorder to concerts and it would have a red light that was on when it was recording. I would put black duct tape across the light, so that it wouldn't shine like a beacon in the dark venue.

Anybody else remember Stevie wearing pants on the RAL tour, it couldn't have only been the Forum? Uniform and all. What were they, anyway? Leggings rolled up to just below the knees? Spandex maybe? I remember it wasn't the 'pants' so much, but the length of them that was odd- she had the billowy blouses and what not on top, but anyone else see pants on the RAL tour?

Anybody else remember Stevie wearing pants on the RAL tour, it couldn't have only been the Forum? Well, I was at that show, & my memory is that Stevie wore no pants.

I remember she had pants on at the Bowl at the end of the Tusk tour. I even have a super-blurry picture of it.

My earliest FM-related memory was of hearing a commercial announcing Stevie's RAL tour gig at Jones Beach (I think it was on WALK, or some other Long Island AC station). They played "Stop Draggin", "Talk To Me", and one other (probably "Dreams") during the commercial. I was 3. I took note of it at the time because I thought it was quite funny that a female had a name usually reserved for a male.

If I recall correctly, the Jones Beach show is one of the three RAL shows that Stevie nearly overdosed before. Can anyone please confirm this?

I went to some Rock A Little Shows. Providence, Great Woods and in Worcester - I meet some girls in Worcester -I hung out with them on the side of the stage and when the lights went down we jumped the railing and stayed in the front row for the entire show ~ it really was the best time ever ~ I really felt like she was into her audience. I don't really remember the set. I she sang I can't wait, some become strangers, Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You ( I think she opened with Dreams into Outside the Rain). It was the highlight of the night when she shook our hands ~ she had a difficult time getting up ~ I remember that we where like stay here with us!!! Good Times!!!

Hey it's me Viv! I was at this show too and I don't remember any pants on her either. I wore blue sweatpants. I do remember that because I have a picture of me that was taken outside The Forum that evening. I was also wearing my "blame it on my wild heart" tour tee shirt.
But who knows cause I had ****ty floor seats near the back. I had to stand on my chair all night and still couldn't see much cause I'm so much shorter than most people.
I thought the show sucked and she hardly spoke to us at all. The only thing I recall her saying was, "well this is another one of those Forum shows."

Yes, thank you, I did mean No Spoken Word - which my friend has reminded me that~ she didn't actually ever perform live ~ my memory is a little blurred but I do remember going to Great Woods 7/30/1986 for Rock A Little ~ I think the venue opened the summer before because I remember seeing Petty and Dylan as one of the first shows.

This was my first Stevie concert experience. I saw Stevie 3 times on this tour, 2 shows back to back at Jones Beach, and then later at Madison Square Garden. I, like some of you have a foggy memory of most of the details. I do remember frequent ad-libs and numerous costume changes. Peter Frampton rocked, as the opening act, but it seemed to me that not many people were that into him, which was kind of sad. But Stevie herself put on a great show. The Garden show stands out in my mind as being real energetic and loud. Stevie was really into the concert as far as excitment, and she was most :nod:definitely under the influence. So were most of the people in the arena, lol. But all good. I just know that my friends and I had a rockin time.

All that vamping and "well" and "baby" just added a spontaneity and passion which made it so compelling. I just wonder why it takes coke and booze to make someone that loose on stage. Is Stevie naturally a performer who holds back, and everything we saw up until 1986 merely an illusion fueled by the chemicals she took?

One thing I adore about RAL tour music is how Stevie crams twice the amount of lyric into a verse, giving it a frantic urgency. A lyric as benign as
"look at my eyes, touch my face,
baby is there anyone who can take my place"

becomes

"Wellllll look at my eyes,
wontcha touch my face well baby,
tell me is there anyone else in this whole wide world
that could well ever replace meh baby!!??"

It's like 'word salad'

Yeah, agreed. This ties into why I think Red Rocks is both amazing and a little scary at the same time.... but that "frantic urgency" really adds a new dimension to her performances. I like it 75% of the time.

I was at The Forum show and I remember little of the show - but afterwards I was at The Forum Club which back in the day was where the after-parties were held.

Two memorable things happened for me that night:

1. Stevie borrowed a pen from me to sign autographs
2. I met J.D. Souther, which led to Stevie and I having something in common.......

That night definitely changed my life!

and "Edge Of Seventeen" where she sits on the stage kind of screeching....

I think thefire and passion and downright craziness of Stevie's performances during the RAL tour were caused by a combination of things. She was still suffering from the loss of Robin, her failed relationships with Joe Walsh and Jimmy Iovine, her now out of control drug addiction and lastly, her seemingly boundless rise to fame, first in FM and now as a solo artist. I think the RAL album and subsequent tour were a culmination of all these things, and probably a few more. The Bella Donna touring Stevie seems almost sedate compare to the RAL version. I can't help but think that this was all part of the plan, that Stevie set out to make this tour over the top. She was doing what she loved and her dreams had come true in a big, big way. However, along with that joy she was dealing with a lot of pain and heartbreak. Perhaps she was also acutely aware that her partying days were nearing their end and she wanted to go out "with a bang".

 I love it. Good work.
 Oh my! J.D. was quite the ladies man back in the day I hear. LOL.[/QUOTE

He wasn't an official Eagle, but he was at the show with Henley! I actually interrupted their conversation to meet him - he was surprised I knew who he was.
He's been touring this year for the 1st time in 20 years - still as smooth as ever - remembered my name as well as other details, and it's been over 20 years......

In the middle of the show, she got anxious and, either from excitement or agitation, threw her tambourine way up over the back of her head and it landed somewhere backstage, far behind the drummer's kit. I remember wondering if some poor stage hand might have gotten hit by it.

am i the only one laughing at the mental image of this....

I missed this tour. The main thing I remember is that, at least in Philadelphia leading up to that show, one of the radio stations - had to be YSP or MMR - seemed to be running non-stop promotions and chances to win tickets to see "Lady Lace". Every time I turned on the radio I heard someone calling her "Lady Lace". I don't remember hearing that epithet used on any of the promotions for later tours.

I really like the article you posted! Especially the part about dancing like a belly dancer, i'd like to have seen that! Also is that the time that is referenced where she fell offstage? or is it just talking about she was so high she fell offstage?

I saw Stevie for the first time at the Worcester Centrum. It was awesome. She messed up Beauty And The Beast in the very beginning and said, I think we should start this over...then she screamed something. She then did the song perfect.

She did I Cant Wait...but it was being played with a mix of a recorded track...so it was hard for her to stray with a break or a lyric...I know it must be hard.

Great Woods...second leg, shed tour...She was awesome...her performance was outstanding...she wore short boots with a fancy ribbon tied to one boot...and a muli colored/shimmering lame' sp shortish skirt...

I think the 1st show...the audio was bad as well known for that arena...

2nd show...much better

I never saw her almost fall...or being all fuc*ed out acting...

just rock n roll

I saw her twice on the RAL tour- In Biloxi, MS & Jackson, MS. The Jackson show was the night before Halloween and many people were in costumes. During the show a guy in cape with a gruesome mask on rushed the stage and security dragged him away. Stevie immediately ran to the side of the stage to speak to someone. A few songs later she brought the guy in the mask up on stage next to the mike with her and told the story of Beauty & the Beast as a lead-in to the song. The crowd loved it! And she mentioned several times during the show how Halloween was her favorite night of the year. She gave an awesome show that night!

My first Stevie show - and one of my first concerts ever - was also during the Rock a Little tour at the Worcester Centrum - both shows - and then the show at Great Woods, which wasn't the best experience since I had lawn seats, which was more of a mudslide since it was damp and raining on and off all night. I just loved it when she turned her back to the audience and snap her hair back 'n forth - very headbangerish - during "I Can't Wait."

My dad took me to Chicago to see her since she wasn't coming to St. Louis...it was one of the last things my dad did for me before he died (later on that year). I remember the show was fantastic...I was very close to the stage...I loved "I Can't Waite"...it was my fav song at the time (and still one of her best singles)....I was only 12 so i didn't really pay attention to all the craziness...I just remember the concert being brilliant and Stevie rocked the whole night. I don't believe she did Sara and Gold Dust Woman..certainly no gypsy. Rhiannon also wasn't done but How Still My Love was in it's place.

I recall part of an early verse when she sang something like "Sometimes she wakes up and then she really wakes up" and it was just a hot mess, oh well!

There's a boot of this show on The Ledge here somewhere. I was so upset they didn't have I Can't Wait on Red Rocks but when I heard that recording I thought, oooh yeah. I see now. LOL!

"I Can't Wait" : June 3 & 4, 1986 Rock A Little tour at the Worcester Centrum.

Not the best recordings, but decent enough to reveal just how all over the map she was.

I was FAR from front row! But it was then that I told myself I would make it to that front row some day and touch Stevie's hand. I had front row at the Forum in 1986. But that damn hairdresser, Jose whateverhisnameis, had a chair set up for him in front of the front row, during the beginning of Beauty & the Beast. The little squit disrupted everything. And then he left after a couple of songs. What a little squit.

I saw her 4 times in 1986 and I am a bit hazy on the shows..I was at the MSG show and I do remember that being the best and most high energy of the shows that I saw. Here a review of Jones Beach and they didnt even use her picture.

And also 2 photos from Jones Beach...the second close up was during the Edge walk.

I was at the Chicago show as well - Poplar Creek. This was my second and last time seeing her on this tour. Saw her several weeks prior up at Alpine Valley - WI. The sets were both the same. By May 30th (Alpine) all forementioned songs had been dropped - GDW, Gypsy, Sara.

BTW, Rhiannon WAS performed in Chicago. There's some bootlegs floating around with the entire set, or at least until HAEWAFY - that song always seems to get cut off.

Memories? Nothing earth shattering from any other performance. The WI show was on fire and she was a hot mess. This was also my first concert ever so it was pretty exciting too. A lot of head banging, a lot of ad libs, a LOT of twirls.

The Chicago show was more controlled. I remember thinking that back then. Her vocals weren't all over the place as in WI. But I had lawn seats for Chicago and had to keep sneaking up to the seating areas to get some decent views.

It's really funny to hear audio from these shows you went to so long ago when you were a teenager. I had gotten both bootlegs of these shows back in the mid-late 90's and certain parts of the shows started coming back to me that i had forgotten. One in particular is during the instrumental part of Rhiannon she starts singing "well we heard it through the grapevine...you started it!" Don't remember who she was directing that too but I seem to recall she was looking over at Waddy. She also apparently forgot to introduce her band so did so during this part.

I doubt this but did anyone here see her at the Fairgrounds in Middletown, NY? I had a friend years ago that claims to have seen her there and said she was really f'd up, someone threw their underwear onstage to which she held it up, laughed quite a bit about it and even danced around with it, and then put it on her mic stand, she only did 3 songs because she was too f'd up. I know she was there but the rest of this sounds like an urband legend...

No, she played the whole show. I have the audio, actually. I'm trying to envision the date in my head but I believe it was 8/17/86. I am positive its Middleton, NY.
