Finally, this marks the 25th anniversary - and the last summer -- of the famed Huggy Bear tennis tournament that Teddy Forstmann started in honor of his brother, Nick. Don't miss the exhibition match with the top two doubles teams in the world, Mike and Bob Bryan and Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor, and the party finale on August 29 with a performance by Fleetwood Mac. For ticket information call Julia Harris at 212-627-0578. Proceeds go to Keep a Child Alive and the Southampton Fresh Air Home.

The Best Kept Secret In The Hamptons

For more than 20 years, the Huggy Bear Invitational, known as tennis' "best-kept secret," according to Tennis Magazine, has been one of the world's most popular five-day, 32-team, professional and amateur doubles events. Even if you are one of the Hamptons' most popular socialites, it is quite probable that you have never heard of the Huggy Bear. And you are not alone. For many years, the Huggy Bear has been kept as an in-the-know event. The press was not permitted to enter the concealed doors of the tournament, and thus, little is known about it.

The Huggy Bear is held every year by the Forstmann family and other wealthy philanthropists to raise money for children's charities all over the world. Started in 1985 by Tony Forstmann with his friends and local tennis pros in the backyard of his Hamptons' residence, they named the grounds Camp Huggy Bears (which is supposedly a reference to Tony's nickname - he is quite the hugger). A few years later, brothers Ted and Nick Forstmann got involved in the tournament, and it was during this time they decided to turn it into a charity event. Matches were played at Camp Huggy Bears, Ted's Southampton estate and other private courts in the area with a highly exclusive guest list. Dividing the tournament into two sections, one for professionals and amateurs and the other for professionals and ex-professionals, many of the sport's biggest names were attracted. Each year, the top doubles players in the world come to the Huggy Bear the week before the U.S. Open. Players such as Ken Rosewall, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova have all participated in the tournament.

It may seem unlikely for touring tennis professionals to feel an urgent need to participate in such a tournament, but this is not the case. Not only do entrants compete for the opportunity to receive a large cash prize, but the system set up for the Huggy Bear also encompasses a bisque system - a chance to use one or more free points at any time during a match. Each team in the tournament is given a different bisque handicap, which is designated by Ted Forstmann and the Tournament Director, Tom Annear. This system creates a great deal of hype and excitement for the players.

Not only are there intense tennis matches at the Huggy Bear, there is also an elegant party on the Saturday night of the tournament. In 2006, located outside the Southampton Hospital, a tent was pitched to accommodate the hundreds of people who attended the annual benefit dinner. Celebrities such as Faith Hill, the Dixie Chicks, The Temptations, Roger Waters and Ray Charles are among the entertainers who have performed at the event. In addition, Gwen Stefani attended the 2006 dinner with her husband, Gavin Rossdale, who also participated in the tournament.

Since its inception, the Huggy Bear has raised almost $30 million for numerous charities, including The Hole in The Wall Gang, a camp started by Paul Newman for children with cancer and other chronic diseases and Friends of Nick, a charity started in memory of Nick Forstmann, who died of lung cancer in 2001, that awards scholarships to inner-city students.

After Nick died six years ago, the Huggy Bear's chances of continuation were slim to none. Nevertheless, after a long period of lobbying by supporters, Forstmann agreed to host the Huggy Bear for one more year in 2005, and then agreed to extend the tournament until it reaches its 25th anniversary in 2009.

The 2007 Huggy Bear Invitational will be held from August 22-26. The celebration dinner on Saturday night will include cocktails, dinner and a special performance by Stevie Nicks. This year's tournament will help to benefit charities including, Keep a Child Alive, ACE Africa, Friends of Nick, Southampton Fresh Air Home, United Friends of the Children, Hollygrove, Vijay Armitraj Foundation and National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship.

I wonder how much it costs to get tickets. I wonder if you can pay for just closing night and not all 5 days.

I wonder how much FM is being paid for the gig.

They always play the most random events....

When I heard Stevie was performing at the City of Hope benefit, I was praying that she did her song City of Hope. I would have never complained again...

I read that last year's event raised 1.5 million. And you have to keep in mind that this is being held at some dude's oceanfront estate, so it's not like some kind of stadium. So I think tickets should be in the $1000-$2500 easily, if not more. The same night, Rufus Wainwright and Nora Jones are doing a benefit show in Water Mill where tickets are in the $500 range, so this is not too unreasonable for a Hamptons society event. I would totally pay $2000 just for the surreal experience of pretending like I'm of this social element and being able to drink champagne under a white tent while watching my favorite band. My house is way north of the highway, so I'm always up for the opportunity to peak behind the hedges into the lives of those who live south of the highway!

Yes, if it was in California, I'd try to go.

The problem is, at those prices I could only get one ticket and the more private a function, the more awkward it is to show up alone. I think nothing of going to regular concerts alone, but small charity or corporate functions are different.

Once the music started, it wouldn't be a problem. But milling about stag before the concert . . . I've done it before and it's the pits.

Still, I'd do it, given the opportunity.

Well, I beg to disagree! These kinds of events are ripe for celebri-stalking. And it would finally give me an excuse to buy white pants. I relish the thought of going out, popping the collar of my Ralph Lauren purple label shirt and and acting like a total self-important douchebag- for just one night. Although some would argue that I am a douchebag full-time anyway, but that's another matter for another time... And it's not inconceivable that FM members (as well as their extended clans) would be milling about and pressing the flesh.

I would have been in the exact same situation-- so you would actually have a buddy if they ever magically came and did something similar in California! :)

But honestly, I am going to get serious about this entire "Fleetwood Mac and Stevie thing" (as my mom lovingly calls it) considering we don't have a whole ton of time left with them. If they started doing smaller shows like Heart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc in upcoming years just for kicks.... I would be ECSTATIC.

But would you be comfortable alone? It's easier to blend in, if you're with someone else. Then you can celebrity-stalk together without looking like that's what you're doing. You can pretend to be discussing your other summer home, all while really checking out how Mick is feeding Stevie the duck confit.

That's the worst part about going to FM concerts with middle-of-the-road fans. My parents were doubting my sanity when I was like, running in circles at the show. I got especially weird looks when I started crying when we were on the stage before the show hahahahahahaha

I really would, if only I had heard about it with just a week more time to make plans.

Yeah, that's what I did when Stevie played Cal State Fullerton's fundraiser. I used it towards my taxes.

But to make up for missing out, let's just tell ourselves it won't be that special anyway. I'm sure they won't do a full set.

Yeah, Mama Bear must be at around $45,000.

I wonder what you get that's different based on the varying levels of your donation. For $75,000 you get to watch Stevie take tennis lessons, to warm up before the show. For $2000 you get a nice seat in the owner's walk in closet and hear the performance through the house's intercom system.

Ooh... now you're really tempting me to go... only a couple of things worry me. For one thing, aren't we supposed to get hit with a hurricane on Saturday? Secondly, I hate the thought of paying $2000 and then having nothing to eat (I'm vegan/vegetarian). Okay, I know it's charity and all that, but I don't care whether I'm paying $20 or $20,000... WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
Ask most brokers about business and you'll probably hear something like this: "We're seeing green shoots—verdant little signs of life that the market is recovering." There's also anecdotal evidence of a pickup in current demand from clients. Take the case of developer Jay Furman, who, two years ago, purchased and since rebuilt the Water Mill retreat of Wall Street tycoon Ted Forstmann. The estate was known for hosting the annual Huggy Bear Invitational, where charity viewers could watch tennis pros take down friends and neighbors. The new owners rebuilt the original estate and fashioned it into a stunning new residence. Mrs. Furman was most anxious to move in and begin entertaining.

"Not so fast," said her husband, "We're not moving until we sell our existing house." Their home had lingered on last year's market for some time. This season, it sold in a wink. After a year of no lookers and no takers, everything changed. The new buyers wanted immediate occupancy. Champagne flutes are now being filled at Chez Furman. And it looks as if they will be inviting the Huggy Bear crowd to return this year, as well.

...and they also play tennis! Although I am not sure how well Jill Z. was able to maneuver around the court with her size H watermelons (which have been surgically reduced, I've heard...). BTW, I did see Jill Z. at the MSG show in June- she was maybe in the 5th row (behind the rest of us ). At first I almost didn't recognize her because she wasn't fully made-up in Jill-drag- but she definitely looks much younger and tinier in person.

I too am shocked that they did the full show and I'm harboring deep non-buyer's remorse now. I was all set to go... but I felt a wave of jitters at the last second. Could it be true or is FM just rumour? What if it's a wash-out? What if it's an abbreviated show? :distress: And I was starting to put price tags on everything. $2000 would be enough to buy enough mahogany lumber for a new deck. $2000 would be enough for a long weekend to catch FM in Europe. Ugh... I guess sometimes you have to tell your better judgment to STFU!

all i can say is that it was an amazing concert... lasted for at least 2 + hours and i do not think they missed one song from unleashed tour .... i had promised myself that i was gonna list what songs they did, but once they started playing(and invited the audience to put on their dancing shoes and rock n roll ) we left our table and were on the dance floor maybe 20 feet from the stage (only separated from the stage by the poppa bears, who were considerate enough to remain seated at their table/s for almost the entire concert ) that was the end of my list making !!.... we saw them in atlantic city, this performance was far much better.. i have a bunch of pix i will try and figure out to send

BTW... the closing song :: SILVER SPRINGS !!!!

how do i send pix ?? all are in jpeg's but over 100 KB

Quite simply actually...

Go here TINYPIC (http://tinypic.com/) and upload from your computer, once loaded, it will give you the share code. Copy it and paste it within your thread here on the ledge. You don't need an account at tinypic.

Thanks for the firsthand account! It does suck that there was a "pecking order of the bear," and that you had to sit/stand behind the poppas, but it must have been surreal. So did you spot many A-listers in the crowd? How was the food? Were any of the Macs (and their entourage) out and about?

I'm sure all of y'all in Europe can breathe a sigh of relief that SS has not been dropped... yet! :p

That's great that they were the only ones in front of you.

So, did FM have their energy up for this one? Since they've been off the road for a few weeks. I thought they might be a bit rusty and not as enthusiastic in front of a smaller crowd, but it doesn't sound like that was an issue at all!

Look forward to your pictures. Thanks for the report.

i was going to go into a long story telling the tale of what transpired from the moment i saw michele's posting a week or so ago till i actually walked into this estate in watermill, ny and saw FM but it might be boring to anyone except me, but.... .... i cannot say often enough THANK YOU Michele, for making me aware of this... they were FULL of energy and seemed to love the smaller , more intimate, venue.... i was too engrossed in the concert to do much people watching, but hizzonor bloomberg was one of the poppas in front of us who never even stood up till time to go home ( go figgure ) .... howard stern was behind us somewhere on the dance floor groping his latest, but I and the rest of the area i was in were in were totally into FM... i met some very nice people there and will try and get them to also share their experiences and pix from this event with you all ... now its time to get all my stuff in order and get ready for europe... we have tix for antwerp, rotterdam, paris and wembly !!

That's interesting about Howard Stern. I went to his website and he did mention it on his show, but the website didn't give details. It just said:

Howard noted that he recently saw Fleetwood Mac perform at a Hamptons charity event.

And then it had a link to Katie Lee Joel's twitter page that mentions it: http://twitter.com/KatieLeeJoel/status/3638949266: "Fleetwood Mac concert @ Huggy Bear Foundation was fantastic! All my faves... Gypsy, Rhiannon, Tusk, Stand Back, Landslide, etc"

Awesome pics... looks like a very well-dressed (and -heeled) crowd. And I could just imagine Stevie's horror at the thought of performing on astroturf.

But the real question is, who's gramps sitting in on the keys?? And WTF is he doing at the front of the stage? I'll bet the show sounded drastically different without Brett's bank of keys.

And of course the question on everyone's mind is whether Mama had the Frankenboks on all night, or if the boots came out at all.

Okay - if you look very closely, you can kind of see me in one of those pics.

The concert was amazing. It's a long story. My seat was incredible as was the whole night. La Nicks looked IMO fierce and sang with a vengeance - sort of like the second MSG concert this year. They were all very good actually.

Thanks for posting the pics... They all look great!

So since it was a full setlist, did they include their rehearsed speeches for each song as well.

I was wondering about the boots too... But it looks like the crowd was treated to the runners with the shin guards.

You mean the tele-prompted speeches? Thats what they are. Kinda like the ones at the Manchester show that read "Go To Tent" on Stevie's monitor :) Makes me giggle.:lol:

What the hell Stevie? She performed at the Hamptons and wore the sneakers? She couldn't let them rest just this once? Haha. I love Stevie so much. I think she is getting to the point in her life where she like, whatev; I do what the hell I want regardless because I am fabulous and people are still going to spend loads on money to see me. Well, maybe she has always had the attitude, idk.

But yeah--did they boots come out at all?

gramps is ted forstmann, the one behind the whole event, he was asked in to play GYOW ... Stevie also dedicated Landslide to teddy !

Mayor Bloomberg dined with Patti and Bruce Springsteen and Diana Taylor before flying to Boston for Ted Kennedy's funeral, then jetting back to East Hampton in time to dance to Fleetwood Mac until midnight at the Huggy Bear benefit.

LOL!! I was thinking the same thing about those sneakers. I thought after a few weeks of foot rest she could have endured the boots for most of the show. The boks look particularly awful in most of those pics but Stevie's comfort is really all that matters. :) I wonder if the burgundy ensemble made an appearance.

Here's a mention of the event in the Southhampton News

http://www.27east.com/story_detail.cfm?id=231680&town=Southampton&n=Beachcomber%2C%20September%203

The Hamptons Social Scene, Beachcomber, 10-8-09

Saturday night, the main event was in Water Mill at the Gilberts for the 25th annual Huggy Bear Party. The evening benefits Ted Forstmann’s charity, which is dedicated to helping to keep alive children dealing with serious illness in developing countries. The highlight of the evening was an incredible performance by none other than Fleetwood Mac. Sunday was a winner-take-all men’s doubles tournament between the number-one and -two ranked men’s doubles partners, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, against brothers Bob and Mike Bryan; the Bryan brothers claimed victory. The weekend raised more than $1 million for Ted’s charity.

...and they also play tennis!
