I thougth I'd add one to the "Let's talk about" agenda...

I had never really given this song much thought until I put in my RAL tape, and have repeated it over and over for about a week.

I am getting hooked on this song for the moment. I like the lyrics, and the music is 80s, but, hey, it was recorded in the 80s!! It's just catchy, and overlooked, I think.

My favorite line : thing is, time was, part of me used to love you, part of me still does...

Anyone else????

Question: did Stevie not write any of this? just looked at the credits and it lists David Williams, Amy Latelevision, Peter Rafelson.

Great Choice!

This is not the world, this is not the world... this song has grown on me a lot lately! Am still on a big Rock A Little kick right now.

Just running out now but I'll have a think and post the results of said thinkage later on..

The Williams Brothers -- a struggling pop act at the time -- recorded it on one of their albums. I love their slower, more grinding version & the sprightly funky rendition on Stevie's album. I went to see the Williams Brothers in concert in Hollywood in the 1980s (they opened for Suzanne Vega), hoping to see Stevie Nicks, but she was a no-show.

It would have made a good live tune in Stevie's set in the old days.

Oh, my favorite non-Stevie-penned, Stevie song, because I think it falls in perfectly with the message of songs she did write. Superb.

I like the whole thing. I like the "thing is, time was" part quoted above, but I also like, "I could never make it better for you, anyway." Just the way she sings it. Her voice seems to carry a whole relationship arc in one sentence. Exhausting all efforts to make it work, maybe for years and then just summing the whole affair up very quickly: I could never make it better for you, anyway. No matter what I did. Love Changes reminded me of this part.

Now the memory of giving you is giving out. Whoa.

Then, didn't want to be the one to say goodbye in a stranger's eyes. That captures it even better than the title phrase, which is pretty good in itself. By the time they parted, he was just someone she didn't know or recognize anymore.

Then, I like the ending and the exchange of words from "some become strangers" to "soul become a stranger."

I don't really understand the "this light here" part.

Whatever, I love this song.

Magic. That's my favorite line of the entire song.

I agree with Michele (as usual). I am usually against all songs recorded by Stevie that she does not personally write, but this is one of the few exceptions.

I didn't know Stevie didn't write Some Become Strangers! That's my favorite song off of RAL! Especially the the I don't really need this in my life part. I think Stevie sounds so cute there. Such attitude, LOL.

Some Become Strangers transitioning into Beauty and the Beast (you're not a stranger to me) would be a nice seque.

Great song...Loved it then and it still holds up well today. Even though she did not write it, she totally owns it in her delivery. I always felt this song was buried on RAL and should have been given more attention. It should have been a 3rd single contender along with If I Were You..... instead of HAEWAFY.

This has always been one of my faves from RAL. Can't really pinpoint why, other than it's a cute little slick song with good attitude!

I LOVE this song. I never really listened to the RAL album all the way through before until a couple months ago. I do LOVE this CD as well as this song.

Glad to see the mostly positive reviews of this song. I've always liked it a lot. RAL I think is still my 2nd favorite SN solo album after Bella Donna. Anyway, this is just a great little song - the lyrics fit Stevie's personality and the overall feel of the album, even tho she didn't write it, and I think it's one of her best vocals on the album.

The thing is, time was
One of the ways that an iTunes library will always be inferior to physical CDs, records, tapes, etc. is that songs are much more likely to get lost in a sea of music when they are digital files. Even on my iPod, which contains about 25% of the music on my computer, I really favor probably a 10% chunk for frequent listening. There are so many hidden gems in my iTunes library that have simply been lost in the shuffle.

Anyway, I found a song this morning that I had forgotten about and I immediately added it to my favorites list. It is The Williams Brothers "Some Become Strangers". Actually, in my world, it's their cover of Stevie Nicks' "Some Become Strangers", but that is not really accurate as they wrote it, even though Stevie recorded it before them. I have spent the last 15 minutes looking for an embeddable version of their video for the song, but I can't - a state of affairs I always find utterly ridiculous. Anyway, I think it's gorgeous, moody and very autumnal.

Watch it here. Seriously. Do it.

What I think is funny about this is how similar and different it is from Stevie's version, which she recorded for Rock A Little in 1985. Listen to Stevie's after you listen to theirs and you'll see what I mean.

I can't decide which I like more - obviously I have much more history with Stevie's version. I think it's funny how there's differences in nearly every line of the first verse between the two versions. Plus I love the Stevie stamp of "I don't really need this in my life! / Why don't we forget about it?" at the end of the bridge which the Williams Brothers wisely did not use.

I am trying to find a copy of the album this song came from but - to no one's shock, it is not available for download on either Amazon or iTunes. The only copies for sale are used copies. I will NEVER understand why anything is out of print now. The artists will not make money off of sales of used copies, whereas if they put it up on iTunes for $7.99, I would have already purchased it and they would have my money. But the record companies are too busy going after 30 second song samples to actually be paying attention to what consumers want. (Earth to the music industry, that's called FAIR USE!)

Anyway, this is a perfect song for this gray weekend. Hopefully I can find some more of their music.

(I found their second album, The Williams Brothers, on iTunes hidden amongst the discography of the gospel group of the same name!)
