Okay, so who makes the best Batman/Bruce Wayne?

Without a doubt............ADAM WEST.
No other Batman ever pulled a sardine out of his utility belt.
Baile number two. Toughest Batman.
Keaton three. Way too small.
Kilmer four. He can't be Batman, he's Doc Holiday.
Clooney worst ever Batman.

Haha! I almost picked Adam West for a laugh because lets face it, the old show is ridiculously fun, and that 1966 movie is hilarious! Got to be Michael Keaton though. In the name of God...nobody can possibly pick George Clooney!
I do love the two more recent Batman movies (apart from Katie Holmes...aaargghhh!) but in The Dark Knight, which I think is better, Christian Bale's Batman voice really, really gets annoying! Gotta loooooove Maggie Gyllenhall though!
demon, are you aware of the following book:

It's this guys phD thesis, bits of it are underdeveloped but it's an interesting read. There are better ones out there but this is the only one I own.
If you're a comic book/movies fan where do you stand on Superman? He was the one for me growing up and I've never grown out of it! I'll fight long and hard for Superman Returns and the early episodes of Lois and Clark to get their due respect, haha!

Christopher Reeve will ALWAYS be Superman. ;)
I enjoyed the freshness of Superman Returns...and the fact that they incorporated the soundtrack to the original films into it. I also like that the storyline was taking place several years after the events of Superman II.
But, I did not like the portrayal of Superman by brandon routh. Nice guy... good actor in other movies...Just not Superman to me. Kevin Spacey didn't quite get Lex Luthor right either. I think this is the fault of the material and not really the actors though. And being even more picky... I don't like what they did to the suit. especially the "S' Shield. Totally pointless.
If you like Superman, I suggest the Dick Donner cut of Superman II (its out on bluRay now) and its amazing. I always loved Superman II anyway, but this new cut makes it even better.

Man, I had this pre-ordered in the massive 13 disc box set that came out a couple of years ago and I was SO excited to finally see that film the way it should have been done. Damn the Salkinds and their penny pinching! The Donner cut is is fantastic, particularly the first half hour and with Lois figuring it out etc. So much better than what Richard Lester did.
Superman II was always my favourite too, I didn't really start to love the first one until I was afew years older because as a kind you're just waiting for Superman to appear and it takes an hour for that to happen in the first move. An excellent, important hour but that's a long time when you're a kid.
Superman III will always have a special place in my heart. Yes, Richard Pryor takes over the film and the direction is questionable and the tone too slapstick but the fight in the scrapyard is AWESOME. Vera getting sucked into the computer still freaks me out too.
I refuse to discuss Superman IV: The Death Of The Franchise.
I have never been more excited about a film's release than Superman Returns and I was suked in from the minute those brilliant credits started. Such an homage to the first film. Too much so for some people and that's why it came in for a bit of criticism. There's so much in the film for fans ("you really shouldn't smoke" really made me smile) and yes, the score is wonderful. John Ottman did an incredible job at keeping the old musical cues and leitmotifs in while still making it sound original enough.
I thought Kevin Spacey was GREAT! Sinister and funny in equal measure, just how I've always thought Lex should be. He was the best thing about the film. I thought Brandon Routh was really good actually, although Kate Bosworth wasn't great. Then again, I've never thought Lois was that great a character, always a little annoying.
There has to be a sequel. Bryan Singer has said on several ocassions that he'll go all "Wrath of Khan" on it and that there will be a lot more action from the word go. In this way it will make the 2 films very similar to the original two with Christopher Reeve. That seemed to be the major sticking point with critics and the audience, the tone of the film is not your typical super hero action movie. It's a romance about the wronged woman and about what happens when we discover that Superman has flaws: ie. how could he leave? He's not supposed to get lonely, he's Superman.
The suit never bothered me at all, although I know a few people who were pissed off by it. I was just tooexcited to see him back on the big screen!!
I want General Zod for the next villain.
Oh dear, my fanboy geekdom may have taken over here...

I have to respectfully disagree with you about Lex Luthor. even though I generally love Kevin Spacey. Again, I think it was the material. Hard to usurp Gene Hackman's place there, either. Speaking of usurping the throne...general Zod?! I dont know if anyone can outdo Terrence Stamp there either. I truly believe they all just put the bat on the ball in terms of those performances.
I agree with you about the junkyard fight in Superman 3... even though I don't like that movie on the whole.

I don't think it's about topping other performances. Terence Stamp is too good as Zod to be bettered - deliciously evil! Same goes for Hackman's Luther. It is the one...but I still appreciate what Spacey did with it and hopfully they'll get someone who can play Zod well, if differently.

Well what I meant with Zod was...there's not a lot to go off on (comic or graphic material that is). So I guess Zod is really one interpretation that was put "up there" by Terrence Stamp. It's hard to see him played by anyone else. I'm not saying it's possible. Frankly, I think for Superman to work they need to cast another guy as Clark Kent...go back to something closer to the original costume and get that magic back. I also think Braniac is a villain better served for these times (He represents a global/unviersal threat) and has yet to be explored. ;)

I think its more a matter of the age demographic. If you're under 21, of course you're going to think that Bale is #1, because The Dark Knight seems to be best movie of your generation.
Those who've been watching these movies since the beginning can look past the production values and evaluate the performances, where Keaton clearly shines.

I'm definitely in a minority because I'm not keen on Brainiac at all. Everyone else seems to be though and Bryan Singer has said that he may well sue him if the sequel ever happens. I really like what they did with Brainiac in Smallville though, very interesting.
That said, what they did with Zod was better! Having Zod posess Lex Luthor, genius.

I kind of almost wonder what Batman Returns would've been like if they had only had Catwoman in it? A better film perhaps? I think that was the mistake of the movie...having 2 villains...and the mistake of subsequent films as well.

I think Batman Returns works well with the 2 villains, Catwoman and Penguin have a very twisted relationship. I like it. As for the other 2 films, Batman Forever would have been much better with just one villain (which one though? cos they were both great individually) and as for Batman and Robin, well, I think having 2 villains was one of far too many problems with that truly terrible film!
I'm also not keen on Scarecrow as a villain in Batman Begins, bit of a strange choice, although maybe they did it so that a higely well known villain wouldn't overshadow what they were trying to do with the franchise? The groundwork had tobe liad before they brought in The Joker.
mylittledemon
08-23-2009, 05:33 PM
Yeah I will agree with the Catwoman/Penguin relationship comment. They did manage to make it work. I just think there's just more room for deserved character development that way to keep the films to 1 baddie.
I think Batman Forever would've worked better with just The Riddler. I love Tommy lee Jones, but his "Two-Face" just didn't work. I think he's not to blame here in this instance though... I think also they made a conscious effort to not overshadow Batman like Nicholson did in the 1st film, but in introducing two villains they manage to still do that.
I think using the Scarecrow worked in Batman Begins, as well as Ra's Al Ghul. They were two of Batman's "less wacky" vilains and make it more believable... which works well with Nolan's vision of the "believable" Batman.
Saying that though, I still think Nolan's version is missing something. There's an absurdity thats missing... that comical element. Batman to a certain degree is about suspension of disbelief, not trying to make him "really real." OH well.

Oh that's right.
Now it's ironic to see how Keaton is finally the favorite, cause I remember when they released Batman, many people said Oh, but that Batman, nooo, or this movie should be called The Joker, not Batman.
The point was that Keaton wasn't bad, but Nicholson was great as the Joker. He was the best Joker, until Heath appeared.

Haha... well Nicholson was the ONLY Joker until Heath. ;)
Unless you count Mark Hamill (also excellent).
I think Nicholson was a better Joker in the sense that he also got closer to the way I've pictured the character in my mind. I'm not saying Ledger wasn't great... he WAS... but his Joker was more sadistic than Nicholson's. Neither better, nor worse in my opinion...just different.

Have y'all seen the recent whinging about Ledger's Joker "exacerbating stereotypes about mental illness" (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6043231/Heath-Ledgers-Joker-exacerbates-stereotypes-about-mental-health.html)?
Yeah, because every time I hear someone's schizophrenic, I immediately think that they spend their spare time prancing about in bad makeup and an outdated nurse outfit, blowing up hospitals.

The only Batman I've ever seen beginning to end was the '89 one, and I liked it as a kid. I've always liked most anything Tim Burton has directed... he's great at fantasy atmospheres. So Michael Keaton has to be my fav Batman... because he's the only one I could vaguely tolerate (I'm not into superhero stuff at ALL).
For those who are big fans of the '89 Batman, the house of the screenwriter who wrote that movie, along with Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice house is for sale near me. Looks like a neat place... I can see how he might have been inspired by his surroundings:

I have felt that Aaron Eckhardt was the shining star in The Dark Knight, not so much Ledger's Joker. I like Ledger's take on the Joker, I do (even though I prefer Jack's)... My major issue with the Dark Knight, other than the plot being a little weak was that they killed off Two-Face. They did a great job building up Dent's story only to kill him off so quickly? Two-Face deserved his own movie. :distress:

I have such love for this completely rubbish, guilty pleasure film. Faye Dunaway is ridiculously camp yet fun as Selena, the main witch villian. Peter O' Toole is Zaltar, an Elder on Argos City who loses the Omegahedrom (power source) and so banishes himself to the Phantom Zone. Sorry...haha.
There is a poster of Superman on Lucy Lane's wall, who Linda Lee/Kara/Supergirl shares a room with at a girls boarding school. Christopher Reeve was supposed to be in the film but backed out at the last minute. The only link to the Superman franchise is Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen.
The film is ridiculous yet so bad it's great. It includes the immortal line: "You were hit on the head by a coconut".

i've never seen that last picture of Catwoman before so I had to post it.
Umm... I think Pfeiffer was superb as Catwoman... a little nuts, a little creepy... I wonder how Anne Hathaway is going to portray the character in Nolan's next Batman?

My favorite Batman is Christian Bale just because he's hot. :wavey: Brandon
Michael Keaton is good as well. I actually think Batman was the first movie period I remember seeing in the theaters when I was 4 0r 5. Hmm. I'm old.

Hey don't feel old. I was 11 when the first Batman came out. the one with Michael Keaton. I was immersed in Bat-mania.

At least you didn't pick Bale just cause "he's hot."
ew, bale is not my idea of hot.
and we were the same age when batman 89 came out. i remember seeing it in the theater and being scared ****less just like everyone else. my brother was OBSESSED with batman, and he's 4 years younger than me.
i saw a lot of movies at the theater that year, as an 11 year old. honey, i shrunk the kids comes to mind  (which according to wikipedia, they opened the same weekend).

Yes, I was referring to the one with Keaton. I don't remember much of the details since I was so young other than The Joker being awesome. I do remember Batman Returns though. Michelle Pfeiffer, ftw.

Years later after having been a fan of the film I do see that Nicholson really took the lead in the film. Burton has said he always felt Batman was in it "just enough" as a character who would naturally stay hidden, in the shadows...
