View Full Version : Aerosmith's Steven Tyler: Sex change?

Steven Tyler's recent stage fall forced the cancellation of Aerosmith's summer tour, but this photo of the 61-year-old Tyler that appeared in yesterday's Boston Globe makes me wonder if a bad fall can result in a spontaneous sex change. He looks like a little old woman.
It was taken in Massachusetts liquor store with some local actor.

LOL that is funny. One of my girlfriends sent me an email the other day that simply said, "how is this even possible at age 61?" with this photo:

Notice that he's holding his actual glasses in his hand, meaning he probably decided he should put the sunglasses on for the picture. I almost said shades, but those aren't shades.

Hm. When I met Steven Tyler several years ago, he was definitely clean and sober. Let's hope for the best and say he was there with a friend.

It is possible for an alcoholic to reach a state (which can last for years) where they can imbibe yet not be self destructive- even if said behavior inherently risks self destruction. Steven Tyler is only one of a very long list of celebrities who once had counseling in alcohol rehabilitation yet today still openly partake (see: Drew Barrymore).
I do, however, doubt that he still uses cocaine- I think that was the crux of all of his problems back in the day.

Tyler does look whack there. I think the glasses don't help. People need to stop wearing big sunglasses. For real. It's ridiculous.

Me too. Plus he's probably on pain killers after taking that fall. Mixing them with alcohol is just asking for trouble. Then again, maybe he was just in there buying a lottery ticket. ;)

Saw this online just recently, take it for what it's worth:
AEROSMITH Singer Is "Uninsurable Because Of All The Accidents And Cancelled Dates"
Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa from Bostonherald.com is reporting:
AEROSMITH isn’t breaking up, but the rock ’n’ roll legends are going on strike until lead singer Steven Tyler straightens up - and sobers up, according to band sources.
“Truthfully, he’s a liability for the band,” one source told the Track . “He’s uninsurable because of all the accidents and cancelled dates.”
Steven, 61, who had been the poster boy for the 12 steps, has fallen off the wagon hard and was partying like a teenager at the 69th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota where he fell off the stage during a show, we’re told.
As you know by now, the Bad Boys of Boston had to scrap their summer tour last week after Tyler’s fall, which left the frontman with a broken left shoulder and 20 stitches in his head.
Since the Sturgis drama the frontman hasn’t picked up the phone to call his longtime bandmates Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford, sources said.
Instead, we hear, Tyler’s new management company, Union Entertainment Group, dispatches health updates and other Steven news via e-mail to the band’s longtime managers Howard Kaufman and Trudy Green .
(Steven’s manager John Greenberg at UEG didn’t return e-mails yesterday seeking comment.)
“Everyone is very worried about him,” said another source who wished to remain anonymous. “All of this didn’t happen overnight. Sturgis was just the final straw.”

I didn't say "indefinitely" - I said "which can last for years". Inevitably, they'll find themselves in the same position they were in before (although maybe not to the same extreme), but there is a time period in the interim where they can be functional.

Usually when an addict or alcoholic relapses, they pick up right where they left off.

Usually, but not always. There can be different levels of/reasons for dependency. Its not an exact science.
Regarding Tyler, that Boston Herald piece is pretty damning. Friends/associates of Tyler- the same ones who rushed to defend him last year when there was wild speculation about his stint in rehab- have been conspicuously silent, lending credence to the possibility this is a full blown relapse. His girlfriend (the former Live Nation flunkie) seems to be the root of the problem.

No. It's not. The person you cited was treated for an addiction which probably was not alcohol. She was probably clean and sober for a period of time and did not/does not imbibe in the thing (s) to which she was addicted. It's fairly complicated and I don't want to get into a big long discussion over it. You are certainly entitled to your point of view though.
Also, I really hope Steven is clean and sober. He already has liver disease.

Oh no. It wasn't that long ago that he had the interferon treatments for his Hep C. If this is true, it's really sad. :(

Barrymore had multiple stints in rehab for both drug and alcohol addiction, according to numerous published reports. You are right that it is complicated- that was my original point. Its not black or white as to whether someone is a dependent, self-destructive alcoholic or not.
Inevitably, they will very likely pay the price for their addiction, but it doesn't mean they can't have long periods of time where they can imbibe and still maintain a desirable level of productivity and happiness... whether its their second stint of rehab 10-20 years later, or dying of liver failure at age 60.

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler Enters Rehab, Vows to Stay in Band
12/22/09, 9:00 pm EST
Rolling Stone can confirm that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has entered a rehab facility to treat an addiction to prescription painkillers. “With the help of my family and team of medical professionals I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain and am eager to be back on the stage and in the recording studio with my bandmates Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford,” the singer said in a statement.
In an exclusive statement to Rolling Stone, Tyler also addressed his bandmates’ recent allegations that he demanded a two-year break from the group: “I wish to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumored two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false and I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled.”
In November, Whitford told RS he believed Tyler “doesn’t act like a sober person,” adding, “I’m not hanging with the guy, but his history of drug abuse is well documented.” Tyler fell off the stage during a South Dakota show in early August, forcing the band to cancel the remainder of its injury-plagued summer tour. At the time, Tyler told Rolling Stone he resented implications that the accident occurred while he was intoxicated. “The easiest thing in the world is to say he’s drunk or stoned,” he said. After the tour was canceled, word of strife within Aerosmith began to leak out; in early November, Tyler told a reporter he was taking time off to work on “Brand Tyler” and his bandmates responded by announcing they were beginning to search for a replacement singer.
Tyler, 61, last entered rehab in May 2008 to deal with pain from foot surgery. Dr. Brian McKeon, a physician from the New England Baptist Hospital who has treated the frontman, says in a statement that Tyler’s addiction stems from difficulties with pain management. “Over the past 10 years, Steven Tyler has suffered orthopedic injuries and has been in severe chronic pain which will require further surgeries on his knees and feet,” McKeon said. “Managing and controlling his pain has been challenging and despite our use of alternative therapies and the creation of custom shoes built by a team of engineers from Timberland, Steven’s pain has progressed. The balance between managing his pain and avoiding addiction is tenuous and difficult and his bravery in persevering through rigorous touring is admirable. As with many athletes, Steven put his performance first as he struggled with acute pain for years.”
Tyler’s daughter Liv also issued a statement expressing her support for her father. “He is a courageous man,” she said. “We love him and are so proud that he is getting help to balance his pain management, not just for himself but for his family, friends and fans.” Just last week, Tyler hired new management at 10th Street Entertainment.
Rolling Stone will have more news on Tyler’s condition and the state of Aerosmith as information becomes available.

I agree they do look ridiculous. Big sunglasses like that make me think of some of Stevie's old candid photos where she wore them as a joke 20 years ago.
