View Full Version : Taylor Swift Takes an Accidental Stab at Stevie?

I picked last month's Glamour magazine up from my magazine rack and decided to leaf through it again. Since I had read every artical (except for the dirty ones) except the interview with Taylor Swift. (Who was on the cover.) So I read it, and didn't find it too interesting because I don't particularly like Taylor... until I read the last line of the interview.
Glamour: What kind of life do you picture 10, 20, years from now?
TS: As far as my career goes, I hope I'm still touring. I'd love to always be present in music, writing songs, but I'm not the kind of person who will hang around if I become irrelevant. I'll bow out gracefully, raise my kids, and have a garden. And I'm going to let myhair go gray when I'm older--I don't need to be blonde when I'm 60!
Although I'm sure that she wasn't singling out Ms. Nicks herself, this article offended me more than it probably should have. Especially the thing about blonde hair.
Thoughts?

lol...I don't think she even considered Stevie wen she made that statement.
I really don't care for Taylor Swift...I knew it before I even knew who she was. Whenever I would hear that "Teardrops on my Guitar" song come on the radio I would cringe and turn the station as quickly as possible. Then "Love Story" came out and I had the same reaction. I didn't know who was actually singing either one, I just knew I really, really didn't like the voice. Then, one day I found out it was the same person. There is just something about that chick that irks me! I have no idea why I have that reaction to her...its not that her voice is bad...its just that the sound of it irritates the hell out of me.
And anyway, what the hell does she know about getting older??? Its pretty easy for someone as young as she is to make statements like that :p

when i was in HS i used to say i'd never dye my hair. then i started going grey at 19.
as for TS's music - it's not that bad. her writing surprises me with its brevity and clarity. but she is criminally awful live. reba mcentire uses auto tune live, why can't she?

Is Taylor Swift a natural blonde? I dunno... It sounds as if she meant it in that "sex sells" sort of way. She hopes she not "putting herself out there" at that age. I highly doubt she was referring to Stevie Nicks in any way.
But... even if she was...

I definitely don't approve of the entire "sex sells" mentality but considering Miley is 15 and was recently caught on a stripper pole.... I think Taylor is the least of the media's worries right now.
Plus, for my generation (I'm 17), the vast majority of 19-year-olds sleep with other people. Actually, many 16-year-olds do. Not saying its right, but as I said... Taylor is doin' pretty good :)

i think it'll be a great day when we finally de-sensationalize the idea of anyone under the age of 18 having sex.

I mean, did my heart stop a little in my chest? Maybe.
Taylor's blonde. If I said I'm going to let my hair go grey, I don't need to be a brunette at 60, I'm not insulting Cher. I'm just telling you about my my life and the way I see my own image changing through the years. You probably don't care, and DEAR GOD, I would never actually let myself go grey, but there you have it.
And as a little sidenote that I just have to throw in, Nicks should f*cking love Taylor.

I agree. She writes about what matters to her in a way that a pretty large audience can relate too. I think her live performances might improve with age, it almost seems like she's just really nervous which makes her voice a bit shakey.
As for the actual topic of this thread, I think someone should remind Taylor of this remark when she's in her 50s. :p

Medium/dark brown. It's around the same colour as mine is naturally, which of course is incredibly helpful. ;)

Yeah, didn't Stevie say something along the lines of, 'I can't imagine myself doing this when I'm sixty.'
She's said it many times through her career actually. Strange how things turn out.

I think if her writing keeps improving with every album, she just might.
Like Carrie said, Taylor writes with a clarity that's quite impressive for someone 19 years old (and whose songs are being pulled from a back catalogue that starts at 14.) Is her singing voice incredible? No, it isn't, but that only shows how far her other talents have carried her. This is a girl who turned down her first contract offer, RCA, because they wouldn't allow her to write her own music, and who has now progressed to the point that she's co-writing songs for other popular country acts. She's one of the highest grossing artists of the year, and she's not above poking fun at herself (see "Thug Story.) I haven't done quite as much with myself since my 19th birthday this year.
Find fault with her songs for being "too teenage" if you will, but keep in mind, they were written by a teenager; fault her for being anti-feminist in Love Story, but remember that true feminism is the belief that a woman can follow any fantasy of her heart and mind. If you ask me, Taylor Swift is one of, if not the, most admirable young mainstream artists out there today.

The girl wrote Our Song when she was in the ninth grade. I'd call that pretty spectacular. You can't go anywhere but up.
I was driving around with my nieces and that song came on and all 3 of us (10 years old, 16 years old and 40+) were singing along, bopping up and down like ninnies.

I think Taylor Swift's great. And if you listen to some of Stevie's earlier songs, they're quite different to the style she wrote in later.
It's just developing, life experience and practise. I think Taylor will go far though.

I like Taylor, and her music, anyway due these new artists in the last 15 years they fade away into the sunset like gangbusters,we wont hear them again on the radio until something bad happens,. they have no longevity like the legends ,but she won't be remembered like Loretta Lynn,Tammy Wynnette,Patsy Cline,Emmylou Harris and other legends of country music went she gets to be Stevie's age.she will be a unknown .I wish her luck, she's only 19 ,lets see what happens 41 years from now.I wont be here to see that ,Emmylou Harris is a year older then Stevie,Emmylou's hair started to gray when she was in her 30's, I'm very supprized she did not mentioned Emmylou 's hair.

She could just as easily be talking about Dolly. In fact wouldn't that be more likely as she is a 'country" singer although Dolly's blonde hair is a wig.Taylor will never have the career longevity of a Parton or a Nicks. The uniqueness and talent are just not there. In fact I don't even think they make em' like that anymore.

I didn't mean to take a stab at Taylor. I actually like her quite a bit. I agree that she is very talented. And I think she's very smart career wise and that's especially astonishing given her very young age. But will she still be around 25-30 years down the line? I'd say given her talent, she has a fair shot at it, but in the end, only time will tell. I've been around long enough however to see more than a few, very talented people with very promising careers ahead of them either self-destruct or burn out or simply not deliver on their early promise. I don't think most people have any idea of just what it takes to sustain a decades-spanning career. That's part of what I was trying to get at with my one-liner earlier. Beyond that, I've also lived long enough now to know that how you think you'll feel at a certain age is sometimes very different than when actually reach that age. I've heard Stevie make similar statements when she was much younger about performing in her old age. And then there's this very famous quote from Mick Jagger: I'd rather be dead than singing "Satisfaction" when I'm forty-five. -- Mick Jagger. For the record, Mick is now 66 and still singing Satisfaction.

I don't really dislike Taylor, I just don't think she herself is all that great. I like her lyrics, they're very good and flow well together. But I don't like her voice. That probably has something to do with the fact that the only country music I can tolerate is anything that comes out of Stevie's mouth. (AND BY THAT I MEAN MUSIC!) I"m also quite sick of her songs being the only ones I can listen to when I turn on the radio. SHE'S ON IT ALL THE TIME.
But... she should defiintely stick to country:

Yeah I don't think shes "bad", she clearly can sing. But whenever I think of Taylor Swift I just think...generic. No spice or sass or anything. Its not even like real country, its too pop.

Yeah, she definately treads the line between country and pop, but trying to define genres always gives me a headache! I agree about the lack of spice, just personal taste but I like a bit of outlaw to a country singer. :p
I do wonder if she's got much staying power, her appeal has a lot to with her youth and girlishness, I wonder how she'll develop.

Sometimes when people do interviews they forget years later that they even said some of the things they said. i think by the time she is 60 she'll stay blonde. She's only what 20? She's still a kid and she has a long way to go in her life. I like Taylor Swift, I enjoy her music, she sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't think she was poking fun at Stevie in anyway. She probably gets so many comments about her hair. And I do love her hair. I wish I had curls like that. I wish I had curls period. LOL!

And Dolly's hair has always been a wig. She supposedly never lets anyone see her without it...
And I totally agree. They honestly do not make them to last anymore. (Which I have very strong opinions as to why that is...) I bang my head on my desk every time the new flavor of the month's CD comes across my way. I die a little inside when I plaster on that smile every day at work and try to convince people that some of this Top 40 "country" music is the best thing since sliced bread.
It's amazing what kind of record deal you can buy these days... (even though if you ask, it never happened that way in Taylor's case. *rolls eyes*)
Emmylou's hair started to gray when she was in her 30's, I'm very supprized she did not mentioned Emmylou 's hair.
As a side note, Emmylou's hair is gorgeous. Especially in person.

1 - the mere idea that what Taylor said in that interview was in any way, shape or form directed at Stevie is ridiculous and the fact that it's being discussed is even more so.
2 - I like Taylor. I didn't like the "I'll tell everyone you're gay" or whatever it was line from her song Picture To Burn that ended up getting changed...that kinda sat really sour with me, but whatever. in the end, I can't help but think she's a cute little praying mantis with cute, bubbly songs and cute, bubbly videos. I sing along in the car and stop to watch her videos. so...I ain't hatin.

I didn't mind her at first... I liked most of her songs.. not enough to buy her cd or anything.. I listen to country music 40 hours a week, at work, because that is the only radio station they want to listen to. So I hear her ALOT. So lately I do get tired of hearing her, but then again I get a lil tired of all the country... cuz it's all I ever hear!!.....Til I come home and put on my Stevie songs. ......Ahhh Relief at last!

Why should Stevie be jealous of that? Being on that label is not any better than being on a major. That's an indie label with a major label mentality.

I couldn't have said it better myself! A singer like her won't last like Stevie has. Plus Taylor's voice and music has no ass behind it. It's just there.
Singers like Taylor are just a fad.
She may or may have not been talking specifically about Stevie, but we get the drift, lol! She really shouldn't have said that, IMO.
It sounds like a back handed compliment to me, and coming from the dog show circuit, I have heard my fair share of back handed compliments! Everybody has.

Hmm...I don't know if she's directing that at Stevie specifically. Aren't there many people who are 60 and have blonde or whatever coloured hair??
I actually find it a bit of a rude statement even if it wasn't directed at Stevie. Taylor is very young though, so you know, she may just not have developed a very mature outlook yet. *shrug* If she intends not to colour her hair when she's 60, good for her. If she changes her mind in the 40 years before she gets to 60, then good for her also. It's all quite irrelevant really.
I think Stevie looks fantastic and her hair looks completely normal/natural, as it always has. (just as an aside, my mum is 62 and colours her hair. I can't imagine her grey. It'd freak me out! lol)

All she said was " I don't need to be blond when I'm 60". She didn't say "People who dye their hair at 60 are shallow and superficial". So what's the problem? Are young people not supposed to say how they feel at their current age because it might not be how they feel when they are senior citizens?
I think she'll do fine with her career. She's already sold over 5 million albums between her first and second releases. She appeared on an episode of CSI and was very good, and she's making her film debut next year. She's not my cup of tea, but I'm not a fan of country music. I don't get why anyone would be so negative as far as foreseeing a successful career for her. Her success will not take away from any of Stevie's accomplishments.

Curly hair is a right pain in the arse. Ever seen that episode of "Friends" where Monica's hair goes 'fro like in the humidity so she gets dreadlocks? Dreadlocks would not be a solution for my hair.

Yes, there are country artists I like, such as Julie Roberts and Tim McGraw, and I may enjoy them immensely for the songs they choose and the way they perform them (which is certainly a talent in itself), but I do feel less due to the fact that they don't write their material -- or at least they don't write the songs that are the better ones.
It's great that Taylor is writing at such a young age and she can only improve.

I agree...even though I don't care for her music...I have huge respect for people who write their own stuff. I understand that performing is difficult and it takes a certain talent to do it but writing your own stuff makes it more personal and in turn has an effect on what the audience takes away from it...at least, thats true for me, maybe not everyone. I do have a thing for writers, though, so that may be why I feel that way. To me, it just seems like it becomes more of an art when the singer writes it himself/herself whereas if someone else writes it for them it can have a more commercial feel to it. LOL...in my head that makes sense but I don't think I explained it very well
