It's 12:50 A.M. Just curious, who didn't have a date tonight? And why not?

I helped babysit. That's my excuse what yours?

I'm too tired and Christian is not interested (yet). That's him on the left.

I went on a date tonight, haha. Whats wrong with the rest of you??? just kidding...

The man I went out with, Nick, is now going to be joining The Ledge. I can't wait!...or should I say "I can't wait, I can't wait...!"

I am supposed to be reading three novels by Wednesday, plus a short story for my French class.

Currently have 100 pages read of one book, am halfway through the second book and the rest is unfinished.

Needless to say, I have no idea why I am on the Ledge right now.

:) That's awesome! Too bad most boys my age don't know who Stevie Nicks is! (Or they think she's a boy...)

Exactly. Thats why I don't date guys my age. This guy is a bit older than me. I'm strange...I've never quite felt like I connect with guys my age.

If you date an older man once, it's harder to go back.

The boy I'm dating is technically older than me, but only by a little over a year. :) I'm kind of liking this older(ish) guy thing. I don't know how much older I'd go though. (But if Billie Joe Armstrong wanted to date me, I'd SO be there.)

I'm seventeen. I now believe that anything under 25 is too young after dating more than my share of significantly older men.

a) I am going to hell
b) I'm gonna love it there if I can keep this up.

daniellaaarisen

because you're the cool chick.

It's because I love you guys and, of course, La Nicks and the Buck.

I would much rather be talking about them than reading White Teeth (although Zadie Smith did, admittedly, do an excellent job with this novel...)

And now I just remembered that I need to fill an excel spreadsheet with all the contact information for over 100 Vice Presidents of Engineering for my dad by tomorrow morning. Awesome.

I bet if you tried you could have a girlfriend from your own neighboorhood. All it takes is some talking. Tell the girl you like how you feel. And then be respectfully persistant. People like being persued.

why don't I have a date tonight? [or any other night for that matter]

many reasons.

1. I'm really not interested in anybody right now
2. I don't think any guy I've been interested in in the past is even worth my time
3. I'm very picky...horribly picky...and I'm about as shy as I am picky
4. The guy I have the most interest in right now, is, well, animated - but I do have a picutre of him on my iPhone :D
5. I have to set up my moms iPhone...again....
6. I'm more interested in my iPhone than a person....
7. I'd rather not date a guy I have little or no interest in, or better yet someone I know I'm gonna regret dating, because I'd rather save my special pureness [XD 17 and still haven't kissed a guy...] for somebody actually woth it.
8. Big Brother is on tonight.

I think those are essentially my reasons

and yes, I'm aware I went above and beyond on this thread :D

I don't have a date because the boy who is interested in me has a girlfriend. And I'm just not getting tied up with a boy who's in a relationship. Plus, I don't cope well with guilt. If he wants me that much, he'll end it.

The trick is to NOT pursue them. Then wait until they pursue you. You gotta be a member of a group and make yourself "stand out" somehow. One very easy way to do that is to dress nice, which is absolutely mandatory. Dressing nice doesn't have to involve spending a lot of money. But there's more to "standing out" than that. Stevie said it best, i.m.o. - - "It's ALL in the way you say very little."
And you gotta look like somebody who's "headed somewhere" - - Women like guys with a little bit of ambition - but don't make it obvious that you're trying to sell yourself that way - "hints" are more interesting anyway.

Mostly, you gotta make yourself seem unavailable; 'cause scarcity has value.

Or the exact opposite of that or somewhere in-between.

BUT . . . You won't listen to that. Hell, *I* didn't! I'm not convinced ANY guy ever does until it's too late.

And seriously, for the love of God, check out the X-Files - - - Especially the pilot episode:

Thisd may also be true of guys dating older women. I was with someone who was 18 years older than me... the age difference did get in the way eventually (I was fine with it, I may add!) but while it lasted it was great!!

Plus women's drives vary widely. Not that men's don't but testosterone tends to get things going, so to speak.

I didn't have a date. I was at a pig roast and a man who seemed to be nice was chatting me up, someone asked us to get up for a minute so they could move the picnic table, I turned around and he was walking off.

I am an asshole magnet. Or, there are just plenty of them to go around.

In our quest to find, attract, and keep our perfect partner, we often wonder what turns men on. And while it’s important to know how to light a man’s fire, it’s equally important to understand what douses his dating flames. By being clear about what kind of behavior turns men off, we can be better prepared to keep the spark alive from our first encounter to happily ever after. What follows are the top five male turnoffs.

Turnoff #1: Flakiness
Guys report that one of the biggest turnoffs when dating a woman is when she either can’t commit to plans or constantly flakes on plans. If you regularly pencil in your plans with a “maybe” and/or cancel plans at the last minute, you’re giving your guy the impression that he’s tentative in your life, aka “good enough for now.” Who wants to date someone who makes them feel temporary? Chances are you don’t, and you shouldn’t be the girl who makes her date feel that way either.

Turnoff #2: Poor communication skills
Raise your hand if you’ve been this girl in your relationship past: your date/boyfriend said or did something you didn’t like, but instead of saying anything, you went along with it. You may have even said it was “fine.” But then at some point down the road, you got upset. Maybe you even blew up at an inappropriate time, causing an argument that completely took your significant other off guard. Most of us have been guilty of passive aggressive behavior at least once in our dating past. It happens. But when you repeat that kind of behavior over and over in any dating/relationship scenario, the only thing you’ll succeed at is sabotaging your efforts. Just as you deserve to be with someone who’s comfortable communicating his wants, needs, and desires, you, too, should be a healthy communicator. Don’t say one thing if you really mean another. Instead, get in the habit of saying what you mean. Guys appreciate that!

Turnoff #3: Not playing fair
From your initial encounter to your first date and beyond, guys pay attention to whether or not you’re playing fair. If, for example, you always expect the guy to come to your side of town, pick you up, open your door, pay the check, drop you off, call you the next day, and in general placate your every need without you so much as lifting a finger, you’re not dating fairly. More important, if there’s a disagreement and you don’t fight fairly, i.e., you throw things in his face, hold grudges, and insist on winning every argument, you’re going to be a very lonely single girl because you’re not being fair. In the new millennium, chivalry goes both ways and the dating game requires plenty of give-and-take. If you can be fair in dating times both good and bad, guys will dig you so much more!

Turnoff #4: Trying to change him
It’s almost cliché how often in the media we see, hear, or read about a woman who tries to change her man. Whether it’s changing how he dresses, what he watches on TV, his manners, or his friends, the woman at the helm of all this change always comes off as a control freak. Don’t be that girl. Just as the guy in your life should accept you warts and all, you, too, should accept him for who he is. And if you can’t? Don’t date him. It’s as simple as that. The whole point of being single and dating is to meet a variety of different people, find out who you are as well as who your perfect partner might be, and eventually settle down with someone who’s right for you. Rather than trying to change the wrong guy into Mr. Right, why not keep playing the field until you meet that special someone who’s far from perfect but whose imperfections you have no desire to change? (He’s out there — keep looking!)

Turnoff #5: Ultimatums
Nothing turns a man off more than a woman who gives him an ultimatum. Not only are they not sexy, they’re ineffective. Healthy and happy relationships don’t need ultimatums. When you’re regularly communicating your needs to the person you’re in a relationship with, ultimatums are unnecessary. It’s when communication breaks down, when one person feels his or her needs aren’t being met, or when the relationship isn’t going in the direction one had hoped or at the speed one had anticipated, that ultimatums are usually issued. I have a big reason or two why my luck with relationships sucks, but I don't think they root from the turnoffs you listed. Not that the list isn't accurate... I'm just not good at the "settle down and stop messing with his head for fun" thing. I like to play with my food before I eat it and although I am unnaturally good at keeping a guy's interest because of it, it never goes to "the next level".

gross, gross, gross. not only is this notion gross, but it's wildly popular too. it's comments like these that totally undercut the idea that there is widespread misogyny in our culture. women are not victims of a patriarchal society; they've been complicit in the push-me/pull-you game of sexual and romantic relationships between men and women for millenia. it's just easier for women to cast themselves as victims than it is for men.

Hi Dani,

While of course I don't agree with what you've out here if you are deliberately messing with a guys head, you really shouldn't be so hard on yourself! You're 17 right? I really don't mean this to be patronising and apologies if this is how it comes across but who says you should be settling down or going to any level other than just having fun? If you want to settle down then go for it butif not then don't feel too guilty aboutit.

I know you say you date older men but surely if he's a good guy he will appreciate you for who you are and everything that goes along with that, including an age difference. They shouldn't be expecting you to move to the next level (I'm not saying they will be of course).

Having been in relationships with both older and younger women, it's all too easy to put too much pressure on yourself as regards how you think you "should" be acting. This never ends well because you always end up feeling uncomfortable.

I'm really sorry if I've assumed too much and spoken out of turn but I just found your post interesting, having been there and seen it from both sides (being the younger and older one in the relationship) and from the guys point of view!

Al.

I agree. Despite my last post, if this is deliberate then yes, stop it. The "play with your food" line would seem to suggest this, not a good idea...

You seem to recognise that in yourself though so that's always a great start. There's a middle ground between head games and not putting too much pressure on yourself. I guess that's what I meant.

Curious because I would have thought that the older men really wouldn't give a damn about anything but bedding a seventeen year old girl. I'm surprised you can mess with their heads and I'm surprised that any of them would want to settle down with you. Older men aren't generally looking for a long term relationship with a much younger woman... Maybe I'm just cynical?

Ugh there was this guy at my school in Colorado who I liked like for two years (and he knew that too), but those were two things he LOVED. He'd claim not to like drama, but then he'd go around spreading rumours (<<<haha) and hooking up with totally random girls. (Sadly, I was not one of them.) And then whenever I would get mad at him, he'd like follow me around and be like "What, what'd I do?" and then I'd be like "YOU'RE A JERK." And then he'd somehow convince me that he wasn't a jerk and go right back to ignorning me. Oh and he started dating my ex best friend, which totally crossed the line. To be slightly related, Dani, you're not like other people. You do what you want to. Or something ;) I'm pretty sure you're not the first teenager to enjoy the thrill of the chase more than its aftermath, you're just the only one who has admitted it here.

Wow, you got to the final round!? I have never met anyone who's actually gotten that far in any of Seveteen's contests. :D You're so cool!

The guy I'm dating is only 1 year older than me. Though I will confess my love for Billie Joe Amstrong, who is 22 years older than me. But I have never met him and probably never will, so that plan will most likely fall through. He is also married and has two kids that are closer to my age than he is. :(

Sigh, I did. I would have been featured monthly in a huge magazine at 18 years old, quite a way to meet my "get something published" life goal. Oh, how it still hurts.

My two most significant relationships were pretty far apart on the age spectrum, the first was seven years older than I, the latter a year younger. Billie Joe is that old now? I never would have guessed.

I'm not looking for a "long term" thing with the older ones-- well, depending on how much older. 25+ are definitely out of that category. Typically, any other "relationships" are still much more than the physical-- I have a lot of very close friendships with the older men of the past. I am aware the the age difference will continue to be a problem for me if I ever do want something more serious, but for now, I would much rather have outstanding conversations and a casual thing with someone significantly older than me.... instead of seriously someone my age and only enjoy the consistency of it, not the person himself.

People never guess I'm seventeen, and I sure don't feel this young. It's an awkward place to be.

i don't think i could have put this any better myself. Dani, I feel the exact same way. It's like you're a 24+ year old in a 17 year oldsters body, and it's the truth that nobody your own age can appreciate it.

At least you've been able to get to somewhat excercise your liking of older men. I tried to get a 19 year old, and he thought I was too young for him. Then I just had a 19 year old pokemanz lover call me immature...that I laughed about.

I, however have mixed feelings about the casual and long term thing. I wouldn't mind being in a casual relationship that I know isn't going to last - I hate when teenagers think that their relationship will last '4evrrrrr'. It's like...get real. But I prefer, and would rather a long term. But you can't really expect it. Especially your senior year of high school, when you're probably going 2.5 hrs away to college (hello beautiful Hamden, CT).

I'm just most dissaponted that I'm probably going to go to prom stag again this year, or going with a friend...either a girl or a guy as I view like a little brother...I would have liked to have a legit date to appreciate my dreamdress. (it's not til May, but I don't get out much lol). I'm not taking back what I said before, but sometimes i feel abnormal as I'm the only 17 year old I know that hasn't had a relationship...be it short or long term....the only thing tha relatively makes me feel better is that I'm in the top 12% of my class :D

that's true of any relationship. most relationships don't end in marriage, and even 50% of marriages end in divorce.

so it's common, but can still be devastating at any age. and when you're 17 and stupid, of course it seems like the end of the world.
