View Full Version : Does your love for Stevie affect your social life?

Well, this probably is intended more for those of us who were born in the 80s or 90s, since their music would be relatively new to us (even if we have been listening to it since we were 3). But my question is whether or not your friends/family think you are super weird for being such a Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac fan.

My dad grew up listening to FM and Stevie and he thinks I am ridiculous for how much I adore Stevie. He doesn't understand it, in fact, he thinks I am somewhat "weird", haha.

My roommate doesn't understand how I could like their music or what it is about it. I get weird stares in parking lots when I blast my Stevie music as I drive away. All my friends go "who's that weird girl on your tshirt" when I wear my Stevie/Mac attire. It's so annoying...because, to me, the world needs to know why Stevie is so great and amazing, but all I get is rude comments and weird looks.

So this is the thread to post your weird/awkward social life moments where your love for Stevie Nicks has made you very "uncool" to others.

But in spite of what they all think, our lives are so much more enriched than theirs, right?

P.S.--Someone just asked me today if I was a lesbian because I like Stevie so much. What the hell is that about???

I'm going to school in platform boots and mountains of black chiffon on Halloween.

I'll give you some good stories after that experience.

Not particularly...but I have had a knack, over the years, for turning "Mac haters" into Mac-fans. ;)

I love the feeling when you start going out with someone and you ask them about their musical taste, and they tell you they love Fleetwood Mac.
Its the best :] . It actually happened to me a couple of days ago woooo

Someone asked me that too.

Actually, though, I've managed to turn some of my friends into fans. They think she's cool (and beautiful, of course). It's mainly because I send them Rosebud "Rhiannon" performance on YouTube and then "Sara". If people don't like them I just think, oh well, it's you who's going to still be listening to ****ty indie/R&B/chart music, whilst I'm listening to some of the most beautiful songs ever written.

My husband and mom get my love for her but some of my friends think it's a little overwhelming! lol I have one who anytime I say something or post something about her on facebook she always has to say "STALKER" she is funny.. I say I am not a stalker.. just a very devoted fan who tries to keep up on every aspect of her entire life. ;)

four of my friends and I went on about a 6 hour road trip. Since I was driving, I took it upon myself to control the radio. I had my iPod plugged in and my Fleetwood Mac playlist playing. at the beginning 3 out of the 4 were bitching about it. Needless to say, by the time we got home we were doing group renditions of Dreams and Stand Back.

P.S.--Someone just asked me today if I was a lesbian because I like Stevie so much. What the hell is that about???

you need new friends.

When I'm in one of my super FM fandom modes, I have a history of turning people into fans. When I'm REALLY into them, I think about them a lot, and feel like talking about their music a lot, but sometimes my friends don't get it!

hahaha. I'm assuming that my Stevie/FM/Lindsey obsession contributes to why I have like 2 friends.

If it's relevant, I always write about one of the above for the school newspaper...my monthly review. Essentially everyone in the school thinks I'm obsessed
I'm apparently known as 'the Lindsey Buckingham girl' at my high school....

Last year, I always gave a copy of the paper to the kid I liked, and he only read my reviews...so that's not a bad thing....

I went as Stevie both Freshman year and Sophomore year for halloween, and first year was 'eh' nobody gave a crap, but the second year, I like....owned essentially.
Strike 2.

And of course my teeshirts....I've gotten both the 82 Mirage Tour [penguin] shirt, and the 2009 Unleashed concert tees in the yearbook...two consecutive years....strike 3. XD

I really don't care. I essentially don't want to talk to many of the kids I know anyways. and if a guy likes me, then he can learn to deal with my music choices. I tried getting one loser I liked recently into them. it worked, but he held my CDs hostage for about a month...for about 2 weeks after he essentially called me bipolar...hes lucky I'm lazy and didn't beat the crap out of him...and unfortunatly my signed copy of Tusk was amongst the CDs that the loser had. Thank god he didn't deface it, or he may be on a breathing tube right now :)

My mom just makes comments about 'fleetwood crap' whenever something is said. In the car I blast the music of course, and when I'm mad, my friends don't put it past me to start singing some nasty Stevie-written song.

Essentially at this point, I don't have a social life, and its not really upseting to me. I care more about what I like and want, than what the people associated to me want me to like and want, so that's honestly all I can say. If anyone lets my love for Stevie [and related] affect (effect?) my relationship with them, then that's thier poragative.

My obsessions and likes shouldn't discredit me- I mean, I talk to kids who like rap music :p

My friends are obsessed with Stevie because my friends are obsessed with me.

No, seriously, they put up with a lot and take it with a smile. May 26th, junior year of high school, about fifteen people threw me a Stevie party in the cafeteria. We sang Happy Birthday at the top of our lungs, ate cupcakes one friend had made and cookies from another, and my best friend even broke out a black shawl for the occasion. Most of my cd collection came from them as birthday gifts or random surprises, and it's not out of the ordinary for someone to text me and complain that Silver Springs from the Dance isn't on youtube anymore.

Now, I'd be lying if I said they don't think I'm obsessive, over the edge, or most likely on coke myself, but they're just as likely to buy me a Betty Ford coffee mug and get the joke as they are to say that if they have to hear one more theory on Stevie's current feelings towards Lindsey, they're going to open the car door and push me out.

Wanna send some of your friends to me, lonely and by myself in California?

Oh, or I can just come there. Buahaha.

My peers (20yo) also donīt understand how can I love this music. But itīs simple, I was wrongly born in bad time... and also in bad place :). I just hate nowadays music... (everything like rap, techno etc.)... everyone in my age just say me that I have opinions are like from some old gradma :D. But itīs true. I would love to experience everything since 60īs till 90īs... I hope that rock music will never be dead!

And in the concerte my obsession about Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks... well in my country is really not many fans of them. Some people know them, but they arenīt so interested like me. They say that itīs something old and long time forgotten.

And my familly started hate them, maybe because I love them so much. They say how can I listen to that bablle voice, that itīs so grisly (I hope I use right word, I found them in dictionary :)).

But I donīt care, I like rock music instead any other kinds of music and I love Fleetwood Mac, and thatīs it.

I have a few friends who are casual fans, but we really don't discuss FM all that much. They were probably most sick of me during the SYW era, when I finally got to see them in concert. No one I have ever dated has been a fan. One of my exes really hated Stevie - said her voice sounded like a vibrator wrapped in wax paper.

My obsessiveness has never affected my social life. I've never had a large group of friends anyway, I've always kept things tight knit, but whenever I feel like discussing the mac or stevie and I can't get online I just text my "stevie" friends that I've met on the boards over the years so I don't annoy my friends who are just casual fans.

My fandom has created some issues with my mom though. When I snuck off to chicago for a concert (best time of my life) and about gave my mom a heart attack, she grounded me for a month and continuously asked, "When is the bitch going to retire?"

Yeah, Iīd say that people in the world are fission to three parts
1. Who know Stevie and love her.
2. Who know Stevie and hate her.
3. Who donīt know Stevie :).

I think itīs because her voice is so expressive, determinant and unforgettable, so someone like it and someone donīt like it.

Classic!
Stevie recently said in an interview, "Im never retiring." Make sure you tell your mom!

I feel inclined to also add that my financial status has somewhat suffered because of my adoration for Stevie.

When FM came to Salt Lake City in June, I was definitely on a budget. I was about to graduate college and move and all that craziness, yet somehow, I felt completely justified in spending $200 on tour merchandise and an expensive dinner at a fabulous restaurant pre-concert, and also a fabulous hotel, lol. I mean...I was in this mentality like "go hard, or go home", haha.

Now as I sit in my brand new fabulous apt, haha, with no job yet, I am thinking back to that money I spent on that concert....$400 for tickets, $200 on merchandise, $60 on dinner, $150 on a hotel...lol, that's rent! Yet...I still feel completely content with my previous decision. But hey, some things are just worth it, right? It's just a state of mind...."is that what you want"?

Truer words have never been spoken.

My parents have been giving me a ton of crap lately for all of my "Stevie plans". I have been in love with this band since I was four years old and they are still convinced it will die down one day. I recently told them about my tattoo plans and also my hopes to take a semester off of school to go to as many shows as I possibly can. I've wanted to follow a band around for a long time, and if it wasn't Fleetwood Mac, it would be someone else-- they just happen to be my all-time favorite bar none and the timing of any potential tour should fit perfectly. They think I am completely insane and either laugh at me or severely lecture me if I even mention Fleetwood Mac.

Two things have recently occurred to me:
1) They simply will never be able to understand why I am so willing to spend time and money on Stevie (I don't think I've even really talked about it here-- for another post)
2) In a matter of time, I will be able to spend my money on things that I care about and feel are worth it. While they focus on importing antique furniture from the Parisian flea market, I focus on my love for music and horses.

So yes, I know exactly what I want-- I just can't wait to be able to actually DO it!

Yeah girl, I know what you mean about the parents situation.

When I first started to get into FM hardcore and I immediately needed to purchase ALL cds ASAP, my parents were reluctant to give me any money (bc at that time, I was too young to have a job) because they told me that this would be a "passing phase" in my life. Well, I'm 24 years old now and I am positive this is no passing phase. Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks are as much a part of my life as eating and sleeping.

Of course this is for another thread as well, but I don't think my dad fully understands my connection with this band, especially Stevie Nicks. So, Danielle, do tell your story if you feel comfortable and I will share my thoughts, as well, about why I am willing to invest money, interest, and time into this woman.

Affecting my social life.........hmmm....
Well I've had a few girlfriends that were a little jealous of Stevie.
I don't know if that says something about them or me???

And for Daniella and others writing about spending money on Stevie
and the Mac. I remember the years where I had less "fun" money to
spend, and yet spent more on music than I do now. I'd hate to know
the percentage of my income that went to music in the 80's. But you
know what, I sure enjoyed it!
