this is embarrassing but I will go ahead and share it.

I used to be into hiphop/r&b pretty heavily. When Destiny's Child came out with Bootylicious, I was hooked on that riff. While in the car, listening to a classic rock station...Edge of Seventeen came on. Now, at the time I was familiar with Fleetwood Mac but it wasn't "cool" to be into what mom and dad listened to. So anyway, it comes on and I'm like why in the hell would this station play Bootylicious?? and my mom literally goes "oh for God's sake, that's Stevie Nicks" so that night when we got home I went straight for the computer and learned everything I could about her and then went on to Fleetwood Mac.

I have been a rabid freak-fan for like 8 years now.

Well, 1979 in London, I saw Tusk promotion posters and found the blonde girl very pretty, the guy with the curls quite sexy and the blonde woman sneakin' behind him quite interesting. I read the name Fleetwood Mac but had no idea what that meant.

On the way home to germany, I heard a song on the radio. "Tusk". That was it.
Later I found out that I knew quite some songs from Rumours and from the Blues aera, but that was later.

Edit to add; Wow, I'm a fan for exactly 30 years now. Boggles my mind.

My parents had always been into a little mac, and I'd heard songs before. But when School of Rock came out and Edge of Seventeen was played in the movie I thought that song sounded really cool. So I asked my dad about it and he showed me the boxed set that she released a couple of years ago, two CD's were missing but the one that was left had edge of seventeen on it. After that I started listening to a lot of the classic rock stations and started listening more to the mac, now I'm pretty much addicted to them, but I dont know if I would have been if it wasnt for school of rock haha

Here's my story:

I was at home and my dad came home after being out in the town, shopping food or something, and he had bought the Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits album. He said "This is a group called Fleetwood Mac" and he put on Dreams, and I thought it was awesome! Stevie's voice was incredible! I listened to some of Christine's songs too, Little Lies and Everywhere and I very much liked Seven Wonders, by Stevie. I looked at the photo in the booklet and read about them. I don't remember it very well, but I know that I was looking after facts and photos of Stevie Nicks the other day. I was on youtube.com searching after songs and it's how I became a Stevie fan. Like 4 months before I became a fan, Linda Schönnberg gave me a CD to me with different music on it and I thought "Isn't that Fleetwood Mac?" when I, 4 months later, heard some of the tracks, and yeah, it was, now I know that they were from The Dance concert :) I liked Kate Bush back then, in spring 2007 and she also liked her music and she gave me the CD to discover other music like Kate's and she gave me a CD with only Tori Amos songs on it. And I became a huge Tori fan and was a fan the whole summer and bought all her CD's etc...And then, in the authumn, it was Stevie and since then, I have been a Stevie/Mac fan :) I also want to tell you that when I heard Fleetwood Mac, some days later, me and my little sister Maja, dresses up in 80's style with big hair and strange clothes (LOL) and danced and sang to Little Lies and Seven Wonders in my room!!!!! Maja said "I want to be that one with the greates voice!" and I said "No, I want to be her!" Can you guess who we wanted to be??? Haha, Stevie of course! I tured out to be Chriss, she has a good voice to, and Maja was Stevie! That was really fun! No, Maja and my other sister Klara, kind of hate Fleetwood Mac and Stevie...:( And all Maja's friends too!!! The christmas, 2007, I performed Blue Denim, Edge Of 17 and Sorcerer live. It has been a year and a half since I first heard her wonderful voice and she has been a huge inspiration. She was the one who made me write my own songs and my first song was named The Rock'n'Roll Woman and was dedicated to her. She has also been my inspiration when it comes to painting, 'cause the only thing I paint is Stevie portraits, hehe! Now I got almost all the Stevie Nicks/Mac stuff...All Stevie's solo CD's and some in vinyl, all Fleetwood Mac (from 1975) Lp's and CD's. I got lot's of photos and almos all the dvd's. I have spent a lot of money buying their stuff in a year, I think, haha!

Well, that was my story and I hope you enjoyed reading it :)
Stevie is the Queen Of Rock'n'Roll and she will ALWAYS be in my heart.

Interesting stories so far, everbody!

Here's mine:

I've seriously been a Fleetwood Mac fan for my entire 19 years of life. And before that even. No joke. My mother had "labor tapes" that were filled with tons of FM songs while she was pregnant with me. So I pretty much remember listening to FM while in the womb.

But anyways, every summer growing up my family and I would take a two-week vacation to various states. We drove it. My parents always had classic rock tapes/CDs (FM, Eagles, Journey, Heart, etc). Of course, at the time, like golddustdrummer said, it wasn't cool to like the music that your mom and dad liked. I liked, you know, '90s music (Britney Spears, all the boy bands, etc. Oh gosh that sounds terrible now looking back...). Looking back now, I could kick myself for not having been completely into that music back then. But still, that's all my parents listened to so I was kind of predestined to love it someday.

Finally, at some point when I was around 15 or so, I started realllllly getting into the classic rock that my parents listen to. I became obsessed with every FM album I listened to. I then proceeded to become obsessed with Stevie Nicks' husky, velvety voice that you either love or hate. I happen(ed) to LOVE it. So then I got all her albums. I now collect anything and everything FM/Stevie related.

That's kind of the evolution of FM in my life. :)

Shawna: I love your story. It made me laugh.

Here is my story, that I OH so love telling:

My parents had an old record player and the WORST records too, like Grease and weird showtune type stuff. Anyway, I was 6 or 7 and didn't care, I just loved music, so I was totally rocking out. I never really did care what was cool to other people when it came to music. I remember hearing 'Little Lies" on the radio when I was maybe 6 or 7, maybe 8, and going "HEY--turn this up, I like this!" and like rocking out in the back seat all by myself. I mean, this was the mid 90s, so it's not like "Little Lies" was this new major hit at the moment.

Anyway, years pass, and it is 1997. I am sitting on the floor with my dad putting together a lamp, I think I am 11, and we're watching MTV and the preview for The Dance comes on. My dad tells me that he really wants to see that, that he kinda liked Fleetwood Mac back in the day. This WHOLE time, I am thinking, that might be kinda cool, I don't know what they sing, but it sounds like something interesting to watch.

The night The Dance aired on MTV, I was really thrown back in amazement. Who the heck is this lady? And who is this man on guitar? And why have I gone my 11 yrs without them in my life??? I immediately was hooked. When "Rhiannon" played, I KNEW, in that moment, that this would forever be MY band. And to this day, "Rhiannon" is my favorite song and will be the name of my first daughter.

After that night, everytime MTV replayed The Dance, I was watching it. I went out and bought all FM's cd's and for Christmas that year, my parents got me all of Stevie Nicks' cds AND a white tamborine AND a real Dale Tiffany blue lamp, lol. They encouraged this illness and now my dad is like "you spend too much money on Stevie stuff"--okay...but HE is the one who bought me this $400 blue lamp, so whatev.

Anyway, throughout the years, my connection with Stevie's songs have grown, especially after my mom passed away, "HAEWAFY" become a new favorite.

I know, it's no great story, but it makes me happy to tell it to people who have stories to share as well. My best friend hates the fact that we have Fleetwood Mac posters in our room and concert pics everywhere...poor girl.

I was at a performance of Pelléas and Mélisande quite some time ago in New York. During Act III the Mélisande entered, attired in diaphonous chiffon & silk opera hat. Next, the Pelléas appeared (a tenor), wearing a kimono & bell-bottom denim.

Something just clicked in my head.

For me it was the summer of 1977, right around the 4th of July, and I was in the car with my mother and Gold Dust Woman came on the radio. I was immideately transfixed. I asked my mom who this was and she told me, and the rest as they say, is history.

My love for Stevie/Fleetwood Mac I owe all to Tom Petty. Through him I discovered Stevie. I had heard of her before, of course, but I've always been the kind of person who likes individual songs more than specific groups which unfortunately means that while I liked some of her stuff, I hadn't ever actually gone to a record store and bought and any cd's or anything. So, when I saw her walk out on stage with Tom, it was one of those lightbulb moments, like "oh my god...Stevie Nicks...where the hell have I been?" Suddenly, I just got it! Mind you, at this point, she hadn't even begun to sing yet. Then the music started and she grabbed her tambourine and I was completely sold. After that, I started looking for anything and everthing I could find which of course led me right to Fleetwood Mac. It was then that I realized that so many of the songs that I had loved for so long were FM songs. I remembered being younger and the Little Lies video being on tv and thinking that I actually liked it and this Fleetwood Mac band was actually pretty good. So that's what I wanted to find first. I couldn't remember the song, but I knew I was looking for the video of them in the barn. I found it...and then I was caught up in this whole world of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. Needless to say, I have been collecting everything I could from that moment on.

So, thank you Tom Petty!! I will forever be grateful

I would have to say Go Your Own Way first caught my ear as far as FM goes...... I remember hearing it on the radio in the late 70's but I could never understand what they were saying for some reason???  But I knew I really liked the song a lot...... then my brothers girlfriend one day had the Rumours album and was playing and singing to Dreams.....after studying the album and listening to the whole thing I was then officially hooked--I would guess this was around 1977 but it could have been 1978 I honestly don't remember..... I remember hearing Rhiannon on the radio back in the day and my brother saying the girls name was Stevie and I didn't believe him because that wasn't a girls name!! ha ha But it wasn't until Rumours that I was really hooked and could say I knew who Fleetwood Mac was.... and as a little funny I used to think Christine and John were sister and brother!! ha ha  Hey I was young.......

My story goes back to when I was four yeas old. Edge of Seventeen is the first song I have a memory of hearing, taking notice of, and liking. My mom and I were in the Monroeville mall parking lot, and we were about to get out of the car when the riff started--all shopping expeditions were immediately delayed as my mom started telling me how this song had always been her favorite. We cranked it up and danced inside our little buick. Later that day, I tried asking her what the song was called, but I really thought the lady singing had been saying "just like the one we heard" in the chorus. I was getting no answer fast by asking what the song was that was "just like the one we heard," so I put it out of my mind...although how successfully, I'm not sure, since this is the first detailed memory I have of my childhood.

I had another isolated incident of obsession when I was ten. I was at my Grandma's channeling surfing and heard Stevie's version of "Free Falling" on Party of Five. Instantly another "this is the best thing I've ever heard" moment began, and when I heard the Tom Petty version hours later in the car with my father, I begged him to tell me who the girl was who sang the "original." My dad told me that I must be confused, Tom Petty's version was the real deal and had only been out for a couple of years. I had struck out once more.

Another four years went by before I took my mom's Timespace cassette out of her car when I was looking for something to listen to. I now knew who sang Edge of Seventeen, and I was addicted to everything else on the album. I started collecting anything I could get my hands on by Stevie, and when that led to Enchanted and "Free Falling," I had the strangest sensation that I had unknowingly been obsessed with this woman for as long as I could remember.

I've now made it to almost twenty, and many concerts, friends, memories, and one tattoo later, I'm still glad we didn't get to that parking lot just a few minutes earlier.

I actually started out a Fleetwood Mac detractor. I had made fun of Bill Clinton for liking them, to the astonishment of my father who was a longstanding fan of the Rumours lineup and even owned Bickingham Nicks on vinyl. Turns out my mom had her own copy of Buckingham Nicks on vinyl.

Twelve years ago a friend and I were set to watch a video of a different band. One thing I like to do sometimes is have a little "opening act" -- three songs or so from another artist before watching the main video. My friend had the Mirage video and Fleetwood Mac had been quite visible of late due to the Dance video and tour. I thought let's give them a shot for a couple songs.

Well Stevie's vocals on The Chain had me hooked from the start, and the playing of Lindsey and really the whole band opened my eyes wide and left me amazed. Suffice it to say we watched the whole video and I was a convert. Stevie's vocals and Lindsey's solo on Go Your Own Way finished off the conversion experience in high style. (I love that final "another lonely day" that Stevie sings by herself.) The whole band just cooked. And to think it would be one of their last shows for fifteen years.

I have always loved listening to "Rhiannon", "Dreams", "Little Lies", "GYOW" ect. when they came on the radio. So in my early teens I bought the Greatest Hits and then The Very Best Of cd's.. and I found even more songs I loved that I didn't really realize they sang like "Sara" and "Gypsy". I still wasn't listening to Stevie solo stuff yet.. I was into "Britney Spears" and such.. Stevie seemed wild to me because really the only pics that stuck out in my mind of her was TOSOTM cover that my mom had a cd of... and I thought "whoa!"
So anyway I ended up watching "Silver Springs" sometime during The Dance and I fell in love with it. So I got to listening to my FM tunes and I realized I loved all the ones Stevie sang so I figured I'd get her greatest hits cd's and listen to them. So I fell in love with her solo stuff as well. From then on I have been addicted to her and FM! I get every cd/album/book/dvd I can get my hands on. I love the music, I can relate to soo much of it.. I have a room dedicated to them with all my stuff on the walls. Records, posters, and pictures. Now I am 27 and they are still and will always be my #1 band and Stevie my #1 solo artist.

Let's see, I became a life long Fleetwood Mac/ Stevie Nicks fan in March 2008 . For some reason I had been listening to my 'Very Best of Fleetwood Mac' CD non stop before my trip to see my dad in CA. Rhiannon, Sara, Landslide, Gypsy, Go Your Own Way, and Don't Stop were songs I've always known and loved but I wasn't 'FM's biggest fan' yet. I went to visit my dad in Mountain View California. (Btw, my parents also loved Fleetwood Mac. They saw them on the Tango tour. Dad had to miss the San Jose and Oakland shows for my graduation). It was my last day and we were going to a Sharks game. He told me to pick put two CD's to bring; The Beatles 1's and Very Best of Fleetwood Mac. We listened to The Beatles on the way there and on the way back it was Fleetwood Mac. On the way to the airport the next day, it was still in the CD player. I hate to fly so he played Sara to calm me down. Tusk came on two songs later and my step my mom said something about 'I use to burn a hole in this CD!' and I was like ohh I should listen to this. I thought it was incredible! When I got home I had to listen to Tusk. Then I remember looking Fleetwood Mac up on YouTube and found Silver Springs. After I was done being amazed by what I hadjust seen, I had to know everything about Fleetwood Mac, I was hooked. Now I credit that band, espically Stevie with changing and saving my life. They mean the world to me and I'm greatful to have them come into my life when they did. And that is my story!

I think it was February of 1993, and my Mom and I were in the car on the way to a shopping day in Raleigh, NC. Our local classic rock station was having one of those Two For Tuesday things, and they played Gold Dust Woman and The Chain back to back. I was just immediately hooked and blown away. At the time, all my peers were listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but I just couldn't get hugely into either... I didn't like how depressing they were. I'd always loved the mystical... I grew up on stories of magic by Tolkein, John Bellairs, and always loved the supernatural, ethereal, and witchy. So when I heard both those songs back to back, I knew I had finally found MY band. At the time, Fleetwood Mac couldn't have been LESS cool to my peers. I'd never really cared what was in style, and was a weird little person (still am). Anyway, my parents have a huge music collection, so when we got back home I made my Mom try to find some Fleetwood Mac stuff. The second she pulled out Rumours, it just further cemented that these guys were my band. They actually LOOKED the part! Then she dug out Bella Donna too, and I knew for sure that Stevie would be my icon. I must have listened to those albums nonstop for a decade lol. My Aunts gradually began supplying me with more Mac music over the years, and the instant obsession with the Mac just grew and grew and grew.

I remember hearing about the upcoming Going Home documentary on Disney in 1994, and waiting what seemed like AGES for it to air. I couldn't have been more captivated. I always wondered why Stevie had voiceover commentary in that show, but didn't have any on camera shots like the other band members. Then I saw this interview late one night:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCZ7ockvw4M
I was just so shocked at the change in Stevie's speaking voice and appearance. I guess that's why I never ended up going to any Street Angel shows. Let me tell you though, for any of us who were fans before The Dance, it seemed like some sort of unfathomable miracle sent from the heavens that the Rumours crew reunited. I guess it can also coincide with the advent of the internet, but I've been especially active in the Mac community since then. And that's my not so abridged story! :]

It would have been around 1993 or 1994 that I started buying music. I remember getting my first payday and going to the shops and buying Kenny G's Breathless and R.E.M's Automatic For the People (eek bad choices! don't own either of them now).

I was very much trying to discover a musical taste (I was 19/20 at the time) as I had never bought my own music or even liked any bands when I was a teenager. So I would hear a song on the radio and like it and go out and buy the album by the artist. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't!

Back then you used to get catalogues sent in the mail and you would get several cheap CDs but then had to buy a further six or so over the next 12 months at full price. I remember getting one of these and selecting FM's Greatest Hits and Stevie's Timespace as two of my cheap CDs (I think they were like 4 or 5 CDs for $10 or something).

I had heard Rhiannon on the radio and liked it although as I have mentioned in a previous post, I always wondered who the woman was and why she was singing about Yemen.

When I played the FM greatest hits, I realised that I actually quite a few of the songs from the radio, really liked this blonde chick singer (you have to think about the pics in Timespace and then forgive me but I was a young red-blooded male), and started buying other FM CDs through the catalogue. I bought all of Stevie's solo albums except "The Wild Heart" which wasn't available. It was a year or so later before I managed to find it. I had to import Lindsey's solo albums from the US through a record store as they weren't available in Australia (and still aren't I think). I found second-hand copies of John's solo album, Christine's second solo album and Mick's second Zoo album all in the same store!!!

When I was 21/22 I walked into a second-hand record store where I found three pre-Stevie/Lindsey albums (Penguin, Mystery to Me, Heroes Are Hard to Find) for A$27 each (scarily expensive but back then CDs were harder to find - though not as scary as the A$60 I paid for Dave Mason with Cass Elliot and then listened to twice).

That was the point when it went from just liking a band to becoming a crazy obsession. I went out and bought Bob Welch albums, pre-Bob FM, then Peter Green albums and so on. So, 15 years later and here we are (listening to Bekka' Bramlett's brand new solo album as I type).

First of all, I adore this thread and I love hearing everyone else's stories. Whether extremely unique or relatively mundane, each tale has one very important commonality: Fleetwood Mac hit, and it hard. It lasted, too-- we're all here for a reason :)

In many ways, I was a born Fleetwood Mac fan. My mom was very into them during the 70's and ironically revisited her old albums in the months she was pregnant with me. I have known Rumours fairly well for as long as I can remember.

When I was five, my mom bought The Dance and she would listen to it constantly, especially in the car. The day she bought it, we listened to the entire album through. When "Silver Springs" played, I loved the beginning immediately-- at five years old, I didn't quite understand the meaning behind her imagery, yet I adored the way her words molded together to create something beautiful to both ear and eye. By the time she really got going in the ending portion of the song, I was crying and I had absolutely no idea why. I suppose the message was simple enough, even to a 5-year-old: this chain will never break and I will make sure of it for the rest of your life.

My mom didn't really know what to do with me. Her daughter was literally bawling for absolutely no reason, so she tried to comfort me in whatever ways she could. I was so, so far from upset-- I had just been seriously moved for the first time in my life, and I automatically attributed it to Stevie Nicks' lyrics.

I wrote my first "song" that night with my tiny toy guitar :)

Thanks for asking, it's great read the stories posted!

I knew who Stevie was as the girl that said "I want my Mtv" when Mtv first started, and my 4 year older brother had Bella Donna, but I never listened to it.

In on 4th of July1982, I was 12. My brother's girlfriend's sister was sort of a rocker chick and her band was playing at the town celebration before the fireworks. I watched thinking she was a great singer and was blown away by this song Rhiannon. My brother told me she loved Stevie and taught herself how to sing listening to her. I went home and listened to his Bella Donna over and over again, later I got Wild Heart and never stopped playing it.

I sort of lost touch with Stevie as the years went on, always stopping to listen if she was on the radio. Until the first night in my new apartment, I was going to bed and the Dance was on. wow, Stevie! It was had been so long since I was a huge fan as a kid...I remember thinking I was going to watch and see how she was doing and how she has aged, I was hooked again after seeing that. The Dance was actually the first time I really understood about Fleetwood Mac, and it was my first time hearing Landslide and Silver Springs! Before that Lindsey was that guy that sang that annoying Holiday Road song in my eyes lol.

A few years later I was bartending in a dance club in Boston. The owner asked me if he should book Kimberly Locke. I was like hell yea she's a great singer. So, he spent way to much money to have her show up for two songs. Well, a month before she was coming another bartender there knew I was a Stevie fan and asked if we should go see her for her first Vegas show! Four of the best bartenders at the club decided to go and we left the poor bar owner high and dry with no bartenders for Kimberly!

It was my first time seeing Stevie, we had 2nd row! I called my brother right before it started and told him he'll never believe where I am, he was so excited for me! Near the end it was strange that everyone was rushing the stage, so we went up...I watched the last couple songs pushed up against the stage and noticed Stevie doing her walk! She shook my hand and I told her I loved her! While still shaking my hand, she took her other hand and rubbed my arm and said she loved me too! I can die happy now lol!!!

After the show I had to climb up on a Ceasers column that had a Stevie poster on top to have my picture taken. One of my very cute friends came up with me. We ended up taking our shirts off and hoisted girls up to have their pictures taken with us (we may have been drinking some lol). Well, Ceasers wasn't to happy with us and sent over some goofs in gladiater outfits for pictures, but the girls liked us better haha!

Anyway I've seen Stevie in concert countless times since and it was awesome to finally be able to see Fleetwood Mac this year!

My brother passed away a few years ago and I always want to call him before the concert to brag where I am and thank him for making me a Stevie fan!

These are so fun to read. The similarities are really interesting.

And now for me...

My earliest memories of the Mac are looking at my dad's cassette of the White album. For some reason, it was kept next to Alice Cooper's Welcome To My Nightmare. I remember that the combination of that title, and Mick and John's picture really creeped me out as a 6 year old. I think I confused which album was which for a long time.

When I was 14 I was bored and looking for songs with my name in them. I came across Sara, and even thought it was spelled "wrong" I decided to give it a listen. It had to be better than Jefferson Starship's Sara anyway.

So I listened to it...and it was okay, but didn't blow me away. I put it aside and went on with my day.

A few months later, I returned from a summer camp I was working at and was again searching for something new to listen to. I came across the mp3 of Sara I'd downloaded and thought "Hey, I didn't give this much of a chance...let's try again."

And that time I got it. And I wanted to know more about this band. I wanted to hear more of their music.

I got my hands on the essentials right away...Dreams, GYOW, Don't Stop...and some randoms like Angel, Honey Hi and Silver Springs. And I had the realization that I'd heard many of their well known songs before, but had no idea that THIS was Fleetwood Mac.

From there, I was hooked. Within a year, I had all the Buckingham/Nicks era albums, and some of Lindsey and Stevie's solo work. Part of the reason it took so long was because I heard the remasters were in the works, and being a jobless 15 year old, I didn't want to buy the albums twice.

It was around the time I turned 16 that I started to have some drama in my life. I remember one night, after getting some terrible news, just lying on the floor and listening to Gypsy on repeat. As the drama went on, the lyrics really started making sense to me. It was really a comfort to hear something I could relate to. In some of my darkest moments, it made me feel like I wasn't alone.

I credit this band with saving my life. I love them for it. And I'm fascinated and inspired by their story. The whole "never break the chain" thing.

And I guess it's lucky that Stevie has such great taste in names :)

Well when I was about 12 I got into Classic Rock and nearly all my fathers CDs mysteriously disappeared out of the living room and found their way into my room where they still are. I remember looking at a CD one day what was black and white and had a really strange guy on it with balls hanging from his pants and a woman who laid one leg over the guy's leg. The whole thing was really weird to me and I put the CD back in the shelve and looked for others. Some months later my Dad asked me if I could show him how to save songs from his CDs (which weren't many anymore...) to his computer. So I went to the living room, turned his computer on and told him to give me a CD. He stood before his shelve and said "lets take Fleetwood Mac". I had never heard of them and I didn't care much, I just wanted to get finished soon. I put the CD in the computer and it started to play Second Hand News. I heard the very first second and was like "what the hell did I do this 12 years of my life without this music???". Immidiately after I showed my Dad how to save tracks on the computer I took the CD and put it into my player where it stayed for weeks. It was, and still is, the best I ever heard. That's how I became a fan of the forever best band of this world and every other one. Thank you Daddy!!! I'm forever grateful.
Some weeks later I taped "Fleetwood Mac" into youtube and found all the great stuff there. I really got into Stevie then, Edge of Seventeen blew me away and she's my inspiration ever since then. But luckily FM has also a blues history, I find me getting into all the eary stuff currently. There's always something to discover it seems.

Well I first be came a fan of Fmac first than Stevie....it was like 1988 or so 1 yr after graduting HS in '87....and for some reason my brother rented the Mac video for Mirage (VHS I mind you no dvds yet)....I might have asked him cause I really didn't know alot about Mac than. So when I saw The Chain & of course my favorite of all 'SOTM' with crazy Stevie it just blew me away. I was off and running & hooked.....the hunt was on to collect Mac/Stevie stuff (as well as Eagles/Henley since I liked them as well)....I got Goldmine magazine looking for all I could find .....the days way before ebay.....those snail mail days .....all the Stevie/Mac fanazines....that was the only way to get 'news' back than or MTV....not like now with the Net....if we'd only had the 'Net' back in those days wow....just think.....I've got tons of posters in tubes of Mac/Stevie/Eagles/Henley....I used to change them but its not easy to do.....I probably have more than I need ......the interest isn't like it was in those 'beginning' days yrs.....I guess cause I've gotten older and they have too. I'll always love the music though.....as I do love other music too......its easy to say don't let it consume you.....but it did me.....but all things have there ups & downs don't they.....so Stevie & Mac etc....will always be a part of me.....no matter what....but life does go on.......as it should......sometimes I long for those early days that I was so crazy about stuff....but that time is gone........enjoy what you love.......:wavey::D

Thanks to everyone for sharing stories. I love hearing how fellow Mac fans fell in love with the music!!!! I'll have to post my story here in a little!!

It's amazing to read these stories, especially those from fans so much younger than me, and at what point they discovered Fleetwood Mac. I actually don't remember a pivotal moment for me. I just have the feeling it was a natural part of my being, my spirit, my blood, and it was meant to be that way. I was quite young when Stevie and Lindsey joined the band, and most likely the immense success of the White Album brought them more to my attention and it grew from there. My Mom had the Bare Trees and Christine Perfect LP anyway, and we always adored Hypnotized on the radio, so it was a natural progression. Furthermore, Stevie was a reflection of everything i loved, so that was that. And then she went solo! I do remember watching the HBO special every day like a drug, before school and after school, during the time it was being aired. I have deep affections for many musicians, but Fleetwood Mac/Stevie has been IT! Probably too much.

For me, it was definitely The Dance. I was 15 in 1997 and addicted to VH1 and MTV. At the time, VH1 was running "Artist of the Month", which was what had gotten me into the Bee Gees earlier that year (Still Waters had just come out, "Alone" was on high rotation, miss those days). I had just realized how much I really enjoyed classic rock and was starting to convince myself that I was born into the wrong decade when I first saw The Dance. I remember thinking it was weird that the guy was Lindsey and the girl was Stevie. I remember the first time I heard "Bleed to Love Her" and not knowing if that was a "classic" song or if it was on the CD, which I didn't get for a few more weeks. I remember thinking that now that I had The Dance, I didn't need to buy any more albums because I had all the "best" songs. That lasted about three weeks and I bought Rumours, then Tusk. I was studying for my sophomore geometry exam to Tusk and was re-writing the songs so I would remember stuff for my test, leading to lyrics like "what makes you think you're an equilateral triangle" and "said Sara, you're a parallelogram!" And the rest came soon after too. Live, somehow the Mirage video before Mirage itself (I think around this time I had found The Ledge and started collecting), Tango, boots, the much anticipated "Oh Oh Tee Cee" and much more. I started taking guitar lessons because I loved Lindsey so much. I got flack from my friends because my favorite band was comprised of people old enough to be my parents (but it was a step up from the Bee Gees, in their eyes, so it was okay enough). It's so much fun to look back on this period of my life even now, knowing that except for a few hiatuses, I still love this band as much as I did then. Oddly, most of my favorite bands to this day are bands that I first started listening to in or around 1997, so one could say that is just when my brain turned on.

Well my memory is a bit blurred, but back in 1987 TITN came out and I knew the single of the album (Big Love).

So, to make a little pocketmoney I was cleaning the balcony of my uncle of tons of pigeon-drop. He had quite an impressive collection of CD's back then and meanwhile I was cleaning, I recorded dozens of CD's. He suggested TITN and The Wild Heart to me and I quite liked them...later that year the concert video was on TV and I taped it and played it 1000000times. In june 1988 they came for a concert in The Netherlands, I, 18 years old, went to my first big concert...of course I knew songs like GOYW and the songs of the TITN-video but I also heard lots of songs i did not knew...the day after I got Rumours and a year later I had all of the back catalog up to the White-album and Belladonna on CD and saw Stevie during her first and only Dutch solo-concert (OSOTM) and became a die-hard fan already.

Basically, I was there at the beginning.

I was a big Eric Clapton fan, back when Eric was in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (I was about 10* and was also in mid-Beatlemania as well...I remember reading that Eric had been in the Yardbirds and they were one of my favorite groups, too) When Eric left to co-found Cream, I wondered who could take his place. Along came Peter Green. I became a big Peter Green fan (in parallel to being a huge Cream fan, as well). So, when he left the Bluesbreakers to form his own band, I was right there with him. (and, wondered, again, who would take Peter's place...along came Mick Taylor...who eventually would take Brian Jones' place in the Rolling Stones from 1968-1975)

Since I lived on the West Coast of the US, there wasn't a whole lot of exposure for Fleetwood Mac except on the local "underground" FM stations that were popping up in SoCal. I remember seeing their first album in the record bins, but I didn't have the cash to buy it right away. A short bit later, I heard "Black Magic Woman" ...but, almost at the same time, Santana's version was skyrocketing up the charts and getting tons of airplay on local AM stations (in an edited form). Kind of lost track of Fleetwood Mac until I heard "Oh Well" on KMET-FM ("a little bit of heaven, 94.7, tweedle dee!") in Los Angeles....I was hooked...like a marlin on 25 lb line. The rest, they say, is history (we Aries just love that phrase. Right, DavidMn?)

*= I had older cousins who were musicians and/or very musically oriented, they would turn me on to loads of stuff, even groups & artists from the original rockers like Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Do-Wop, & Surf music, too...so my musical tastes are actually of a person a few years older than my chronological age.

howd you guys become a fleetwood or stevie or lindsey fan?

This has been posted Oh so many times! But always a fun thread.

I first "discovered" the Mac around the time of The Dance. it was that year that I had really started practicing my guitar more. Around Oct or Nov of '97 a good friend of mine said "You play like Lindsey Buckingham." I'll never forget I said "Who's she?" :D

My brother actually bought The Dance CD right around that time, that same year, and we listened to it on the 5 hour drive to my mother's sisters house for Thanksgiving with the fam. I remember my mother actually singing some of the songs (big shock to us 'kids', even though I was 18 at the time).

Not long after that I picked up the "Greatest Hits" CD...I found that I knew most of the songs. I had heard them growing up. Especially Gypsy, Little Lies and those mid 80s tunes. I just never knew who the band was that sang them.

As my guitar playing progressed I got more and more into Buckingham.

And the rest as they say is history...I joined the Ledge right around the time Stevie's last solo CD was released...can't believe it's been over 8 years now!

I always liked FM's music growing up, but never owned any albums. I remember really liking the Tango songs when they were on the radio in the late 80s. My fandom really took off, however, in college when The Dance came out.

My roommate and I shared a 2-room suite and whenever I was gone and she was in the bedroom with her boyfriend she would turn on the stereo to let me know they were in there when I came back. She always played The Dance. Let's just say she and her boyfriend were quite amorous so I listened to The Dance a lot, and I really grew to love it. Thanks Kelly and Keith!

I can relate to this sentiment. Probably sometime in the early 90s, about the time cassette tapes were all but extinct, i got/bought the Greatest Hits CD and like many others I was like, "Hey, I know this song, I know that song, FM really sings these?" Anyway, that CD became one of the top 3 in rotation for my late high school and early college years. I had some big love for Big Love. My friends and I would all sing the oohs and aaahs in the car over and over again. Of course we thought it was Stevie doing those with Lindsey. If only I knew then what I know now!

Next, I remember buying the Dance CD not long after it came out. Unfortunately at that point in time, i lived without cable (GASP!) so i never got to see The Dance on MTV back in 97-98, but for me, the CD was enough to enjoy at the time. I spent a few summers as a teen travel camp counselor and we spent many many hours on buses going all over the eastern seaboard. I remember curling up in the seats on the bus with my CD player (remember those clunky things!) with The Dance on repeat for the entire summer. Especially Silver Springs. I must have listened to that song 10 times a day for 8 weeks straight. Again, had I only knew then what I know now. See what happens when you don't have cable tv?

So I admit at that point in time, I had very minimal understanding of the band and it's interpersonal dynamics and was solely into the music. So, for the past 10-12 years I guess I need to consider myself mostly a casual fan. I do remember every time I heard that FM was touring, I really wanted to go, but never made it a show. And when i heard of people who went, i was sooo jealous.

Finally this year, my cousin asked if i had any interest in going to see FM. I said ABSOLUTELY and was so excited. Well, after that first show I was completely sold and managed to make it to 3 more shows this tour. I even managed to be in the 7th row for the last show I went to. AMAZING, by the way.

I am really kicking myself for missing out on all the opportunities to follow FM and SN/LB over the past 2 decades, but hopefully there will be some more chances to make up for that.

With that first concert this year, I truly rediscovered my love for this band and it's members and have spent the past 6 months educating myself about everything and I mean everything. Thank goodness for the internet and the good people who share so much! I'm slowly trying to feel worthy of contributing.

I've been diligently working at building up my music and DVD collections and thanks to all the wonderful people on here, I've acquired quite a bit of live boots and demos.

It's such a great feeling to know that there are other people out there who love this band and it's members as much as I now do. I just wish i figured this all out 20 years ago!!!! Oh well, better late then never.

My dad had one cassette, where was copy of Fleetwood Mac´s Greatest Hits from 1988 and first half of Timespace (cut in the middle of If Anyone Falls). I just love that stuff and it was long time till I heard something else! Then I gradually got to know all Fleetwood Mac´s albums from 1975 and also whole Timespace and new and amazing for me Trouble In Shangri-la album. And then, thanks to internet, I got to know the rest (most of Stevie´s solo albums and pre-Rumours stuff, and then (thanks to you guys in this forum) tons of demos and live records, which I love. So that Berlin concert in October, when I´m gonna see them for the first time, is kind of top of this everything :).

But now I hope that they will record something new, I wouldn´t mind if Stevie record some songs, which she wrote long time ago, simply I wanna hear new recorded album! :)

Yeah, and I rememmber what video I saw first. It was video of Rooms on Fire and soon after that I saw video of Little Lies. It was great.
Which video of live concert I saw for the first time? I know that The Dance I hear for the first time (only audio), but video... maybe Tango Live DVD... but I´m not so sure.

this is embarrassing but I will go ahead and share it.

Hey Gold Dust Drummer....Fantastic Drumming!! I am a musician myself check out my myspace www.myspace.com/johnbrandoli
Anyway, in the beginning of your recording of Gypsy there is an orchestral version played briefly. Where is that from and how can i get that version, I love it!

1973 and 1974. i was in high school and heard the mystery to me and bare trees albums played on the local fm station. after that i constantly listened to the radio to find out who they were. i know that's when they got their hooks in me. and i've been happily addicted ever since. i have alot of their recordings on vinyl, tape and cd. there are two stickers on my car in each back, side window. red tusk-era stickers. and i just got one for the back window - "got fleetwood mac". i just love them.

I got the first Greatest Hits as Christmas present in 1972 after the BBC used Albatross on a sports programme. I found out about the band and then went to see them at the Manchester Free Trade Hall on 31 May 1973. I can't remember too much about the concert although I have a feeling they weren't that good! Bob Weston asked someone in the crowd if they were going to "shut up and f*ckin listen" when he kept shouting for Albatross to be played. Dave Walker explained the meaning of Rattle Snake Shake which as a very naive 14 year old I hadn't quite grasped.

After that they were "my band" and I bought each album as it was released and went back and bought the older albums as well.

Although I have fallen out of love with them since Christine left I hope we can still be friends!

The year Rumors was released, my oldest sister bought the record and wore it out. We heard it non-stop for two years in the house. Then, when I was 9, I remember watching the premier airing of the Tusk Video on tv. It was amazing to me that this strange song was done by the same band who made Rumors.

Two and a half years later (1982) I was watching MTV and saw the Gypsy and Hold Me videos in heavy rotation and fell in love with the group. I bought Mirage, unearthed the old Rumors record, purchased Tusk, and then the White Album. I was hooked. I was twelve.

Firstly hearing everyone else stories has been amazing, this is such an awesome thread and since i'm new to this site it really all seems wondrous to me...
I remember in 1998 i was seven and i heard "Everywhere" on the radio in the car, i immediately fell in love with it, i asked my mum who sang the song, she said to me "Christine McVie" and i was like huh? she doesn't sound so great....
The same happened with "Little Lies"...
The Years went by....
Then at christmas time in 2005 my older sister left the second cd of her very best of fleetwood mac at our house, so i put it in the cd player and i momentarily died... I had found the band to end all bands... i was especially captivated by Stevie! I soon bought all their albums and learnt as much about them as i could...i forcibly share all this info with my family and friends driving them to the brink of insanity...unfortunately i missed stevie's gold dust tour in feb 2006 as i was still discovering them at the time. so now in 2009 i have my chance to see them live, i can't wait!!!

In April last year, after watching 'School of Rock' again, and yet again falling in love with Edge of Seventeen, I decided I needed to find out about Stevie Nicks, so I got Crystal Visions from iTunes. I never listened to the whole of it, I was just obsessed by the studio and live versions of Edge (and sometimes listened to I Can't Wait).

Around October, I was watching a music channel, and Everywhere was played. I was captivated by the video and recognised the song, and I had to know who it was by. At the end, it came up 'Everywhere - Fleetwood Mac'. I recognised the name Fleetwood Mac, so searched it on Google, and read their Wikipedia page. I saw that Stevie Nicks was one of the members, and remembered how much I liked Egde, so I decided that I'd get the the Very Best of, and Say You Will (as it was their latest album).

I listened to both albums quite a lot (I recognised a couple of songs from the Very Best of, Little Lies and Albatross), and decided I'd need to hear more from them. After Christmas, I decided to buy Rumours as I loved the story from what I could gather from the internet, and if so many people had bought it, surely it must be a great album. I fell completely in love with it.

I was so happy I'd discovered the band just as one of them was releasing something new. Got Soundstage, found out they were about to start a tour, and hoped for UK dates. I'm going to see them at Wembley Arena, and I'm so excited.

In grade seven or eight I was looking through my parents cds and found Rumours. I thought they were a cool "hippie" band, and I liked the group picture inside (I thought Stevie was really cute), but never really explored anything beyond that. Grade ten rolled around and I decided to download FM songs. I liked what I heard, and quite a few songs were already familiar to me, and that's how I became a fan!

I can never remember exact years for things like this! I do know that the first time I sat up and took notice (literally) of Stevie was during Fast Times at Ridgemont High, when Sleeping Angel played in the background. I had to find out who it was and how I could hear the rest of the song. Once I saw "Stevie Nicks" in the credits, I had to laugh at myself for not figuring it out sooner. There changed my life~

After that, I got into solo Stevie and FM. I had actually been listening to pre-BN Mac for ages before, unbeknown to me, since my dad was a fan of the blues stuff and Chicken Shack.

So here goes it...
I knew of Fleetwood Mac because my father had the Rumours record and I had known some songs that were just randomly on my iPOD (Dreams, Little Lies, EO17, etc) maybe just some mainstream stuff. Admittedly I did not know what I was getting myself into!! One day on the way to work I hear on the radio that there would be a Fleetwood Mac concert in DC, said to a friend at work... "wanna go" and the answer was yes that she liked them too, then the tickets were bought. Like any cheesy ass, I knew the set list before going, made a cd and listened to it over and over. Come to the day of the concert, we were a little late to be able to have a good meal before drinking at, and before a concert. After the first 5 songs she needed a smoke and went outside without her ticket stub, a desperate call from her outside the venue made me leave our seats (that really were not ours, much better) and go and get her, on the way...I tripped on my pantleg down the escalator and could not get up at the bottom...at the time (even in the drunken state I knew this was not good) i just kept on going and got us back to the concert. Later back at the hotel i saw the damage to my leg...7 uniform gashes on my shin, deep! Took 3 months to heal the wounds, the scars are very much still around! Left with the scars and the knowledge I missed out on a great concert, we ended up going to go and see them later again on this same tour, so I didn't feel as though I missed out so much. But the initial experience (the fall) made me investigate and appreciate all that they are. Unfortunately I have a leg that is ruined, but I guess I was at a good place and time for it to have happened!

Since then, it has been all about FM, CDs and DVDs, youtube (hrs and hrs spent), books, etc.

Before I was a FM fan, but not as much as I have been since my big fall. I have for a LONG time been searching for some good music to discover, being a late time come around fan (they made it big before I was born), it has been very refreshing to hear & see some great music, whether it is old & nostalgic to someone else, it is great and refreshing to me!!!

I was fairly antisocial in grade school and rebelled against pop culture so I never listened to the radio. I remember a neighbor giving me a ride to school and a song came on with the chorus "Don't stop thinking about tomorrow". She commented that she couldn't even think about the afternoon let alone tomorrow which I found pretty funny. I had no idea who the artist was and didn't particularly care either. I also remember hearing another song which I thought was about Vienna. Years later I realized it was "Rhiannon". It wasn't until I was in high school during the eighties that I began exploring pop culture/music. All the guys in class were into heavy metal which sounded like so much noise to me so during my senior year I started listening to an adult contemporary station and was instantly mesmerized by this song. Someone at the station must have been taken with it as well since it was not a new release/hit and yet they played it just about every day. I became obsessed with the song and finally managed to record it in its entirety. The song was the original album version of "Sara" - about six and a half minutes long. To this day I still can't stand listening to the single edit version. It wasn't until I went to college that I actually purchased my first album, "Tusk", at a used music store. CD's were just becoming popular and vinyl was on its way out but I preferred the vinyl packaging even though I didn't own a record player. Months went by before I finally broke down and bought one. In the meantime (pun intended) I was fascinated by the convoluted packaging and the photos/artwork from the Tusk double album. Even before listening to the music I began seeking out their other albums. The shop owner recommended that I try some solo albums as well including "Buckingham/Nicks". Just before Christmas there was a closeout sale and I purchased a combo stereo system with a record player/cassette recorder. I spent the holidays exploring all this music. I made tapes of my favorites organizing them into categories - pop, blues, hard rock, country, etc. I held out purchasing vinyl as long as I could until "Time" was released in 1995. This was the first CD I ever purchased. I know I'm turning this into a novel and I haven't even touched on their videos. Let's just say I was mesmerized by the "Gypsy" video in the same way that I had been by the song "Sara". What's odd is that, although these remain favorites, overall I prefer Christine's and Lindsey's compositions. My favorite Christine track (and second favorite by the Mac) is "Why". With Lindsey it's harder to pinpoint (there are so many gems) but overall I think his best and most consistent work was on "Out of the Cradle". I've been to three Fleetwood Mac concerts - the Rick/Billy, the Dance, and the Buckingham/Nicks lineups. I enjoyed them all but the Dance concert blew the others out of the water. And yes, perhaps you can tell by my username, I really dig early Fleetwood Mac too but this is already way too long to detail my first impressions of the earlier incarnations of the band. Oh well, that's enough for me. :sorry:

i had an older 1/2 sister (like 14 yrs) and I used to spend summers with her and her hubby. I was about 9 yrs old. She was playing The White Album and Rhiannon came on....I was immediatly entranced. I think I was always a spooky lil girl so I liked the mysteriuosness of the song. I just kept playin, playin and playin the that song. My bro n law was a DJ for one of the top stations in Nashville at the time and I would call him to play rhiannon several times a day. So of course I went back to TX with the record. And I've been hooked ever since. I've heard some say they are sick of Rhiannon, never will I be. It always brings me back to a lil kid sittin cross legged on the floor with headphones on. I've have been to my share of FM & SN concerts but only once have I ever made it to the edge walk and that was about 4 yrs ago.
