I was looking up this song on google which is one of my favorites and I came across some interesting things.
We know Stevie sings backup vocals on it, but there's more to it apparently.

"Stewart tells the full glorious story in The Dave Stewart Songbook http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0615235689/songfactscom1-20, but here are the highlights: Eurythmics had a huge hit with "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" and became a phenomenon in the United States. They played the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, and Stewart met Stevie Nicks backstage after the show. She had broken up with Joe Walsh the day before, so she took Stewart home with her and they had a romantic encounter. The next morning, Stevie kicked him out, and Stewart flew to San Francisco for his next gig. After the show, he used a Portastudio to create a track using a drum machine, a synthesizer and a sitar. Reflecting on the last 24 hours, Stewart says: "I really liked Stevie and she seemed vulnerable and fragile when I was leaving that morning. I was thinking about that and the situation she was in and I started singing, 'Don't come around her no more.'"
A few days later Stewart was staying with producer Jimmy Iovine, who was working on Stevie's Bella Donna album. Stewart played him his demo, and they started writing the song for Stevie. Stewart didn't know that Nicks and Iovine were once a couple, and when she came over to record the song, tensions boiled over and she left in a huff. Iovine decided to give Tom Petty the song, and had him come by, where they finished it up. Petty and Nicks had worked with Iovine on the duet "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," which went on Stevie's album, so it was only fair that Petty got this one."
Wow.I wonder if it's true.Stevie and Dave Stewart, who would've thought!
Has anyone read his book or heard other stories about it?

Is it just me, or does there tend to be a juicy story behind everything Stephanie Lynn Nicks has done within the last 30 years?
I love it. I guess that's what happens when you live life like she did/does. This is really interesting, though-- stuff like this reminds me that there are so many things we probably don't know that would totally blow our minds.
I didn't realize Stevie sang backup on the song. I'm re-listening now...kind of hard to pick out...but I think I can hear it.

"Don't Come Around Here No More" is the third track on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' 1985 album Southern Accents and one of Tom Petty's biggest hits. It was a collaboration with David A. Stewart of Eurythmics. The original inspiration was a romantic encounter that Stewart had with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. [1] On The Howard Stern Show, Dave Stewart explained that the title's phrase was actually uttered by Stevie. She had broken up with Joe Walsh the night before, and invited Dave Stewart to her place for a party after an early Eurythmics show in L.A. Dave didn't know who she was at the time, but went anyway. When the party goers all disappeared to a bathroom for a couple of hours to snort cocaine, he decided to go upstairs to bed. He woke up at 5am to find Stevie Nicks in his room trying on Victorian clothing and described the entire scenario as very much reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. Later that morning, she told Joe Walsh, "Don't come around here no more".
How could he possibly not have known who she was in 1984/85???? That's absurd!!

How could she possibly have gone to school for five years to be an English teacher and still say things like "don't come around here no more" and "I should have turned away and ran"   Sorry, personal pet peeve/secret guilty pleasure.
I love this story. It's so humanizing (especially the detail where she informs him that they f*cked, very specifically, TWICE in what I can only imagine was a "you're-not-Joe-but-I'm-damn-well-telling-SOMEONE-that-I-don't-care-about-him" moment.) Oh, Nicksie <3

I think my morning was just made. Where have I been?! this is the type of thing I would know about!

Yeah Stevie wanted to teach English. My understanding was that she was a communications major. I don't know why she wouldn't major in Education then - but I don't know anything about what major to pick if you were going to major in English.

Mmmhmmm, like nailatixela said, she was a Communications major at San Jose State and wanted to eventually become an English teacher. I don't think she was a full time student, in one interview I read, she listed some dates that made it seem like she was taking classes sporadically for around five years (but then again, we all know how Stevie is with dates), but I'm glad to help even more with your kindred spirits theory :p

So you think I'm lying for some reason? Okay.
I'm not, however. I've lived in the UK all my life and hardly anyone I know outside this community know who she is, especially in 84/85, as she hadn't had even one solo hit here at that time and even her famous Fleetwood Mac singles like Gypsy weren't that big.
So in my humble experience it's very plausible he was unaware who she was especially if he wasn't a fan of Fleetwood Mac and I've found that even casual fans are often unable to name the members of the band. I'm sure he knew of Fleetwood Mac, but I know of Foreigner, but if you said the name of any member of that band I'm certain to respond with "who?"
But if you know better please enlighten me.
I don't think anyone is saying you're lying, it's just that Fleetwood Mac was incredibly big in England durng the 70s and into the 80s. Mick, John & Christine are British and even before Stevie and Lindsay joined the group The Mac had a very large substantial following in England. Fleetwood Mac sold out Wembley Stadium for several nights during the Tusk tour in 1980. I hardly think people would have forgotten Stevie by 1984/85. I have several very good friends in England, not all are "into" Stevie but they all knew exactly who she was back then. I know what you mean about being a casual fan of a band but with the Mac, there was so much drama and personalities that even casual fans couldn't help but be made aware of the members, esp. the front runners like Stevie, Lindsay and Chris. Foreigner and other bands that didn't have their personal laundry aired out the way the Mac did remained, probably gratefully, more anonymous.

Isn't that story that Stevie WAS supposed to show up (and Sharon and Lori actually did), but for some reason or another didn't make it? I'm sure we've discussed this before, and I think the common consensus is that you can definitely hear Sharon on the song, Lori is questionable, and Stevie is a no-go.

It's not a personal attack. I just think someone in a successful music group, involved in the music business, on any continent during the mid '80's would know who Stevie Nicks was, regardless of personal like/dislike of Fleetwood Mac. If he saw her backstage and didn't REALIZE who she was, is entirely different than saying he didn't know who Stevie Nicks was... just sayin'...

Maybe Annie Lennox carefully hid everything relating to Stevie from him, which would explain all the cut out photos in his vintage music magazines.

Everything about this story is a little off. Everyone loves juicy gossip, so who cares? Forget the timeline being totally ludicrous. All credibility is lost when Stewart claims he didn't know Stevie. Forget he banged her when he was still in a relationship with Annie Lennox. Stewart and Mr. Buckingham were thick as thieves in those day and remain so. He didn't know who she was?

Dont Come Around Here No More was released on the 1985 album Southern Accents but it was recorded in 1984. On http://www.whosdatedwho.com/celebrities/people/dating/stevie-nicks.htm, it says she had a "romantic encounter" noted by the "s" below his name in 1985. Then it also says she was with Iovine again in 1985.I'm curious to see if he has the whole story in his book.

Stevie dated Joe Walsh from 1983-1985/86, the song was recorded in 1984 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Come_Around_Here_No_Morebut it was not released until 1985 and somewhere in there she had a "romantic encounter" with David Stewart? :confused:lol.
If Stevie did sing backup on this song, you can't even hear her.At least I can't.Maybe the song is just about her but doesn't have her back-up vocals on it.
Maybe Stevie got back together with Joe Walsh for a year before finally calling it quits with him after her brief romantic encounter with David Stewart?
Stevie and David would have had to hook up in 1984 for the song to be about her and the events that happened.

Everyone is getting so hung up on the timeline....
Stevie and Joe started their relationship during the Wild Heart tour of 83' which had wrapped by Jan. 84'. Stevie began sessions for her 3rd solo record Spring-Summer of 84' which was originally suppose to drop the fall of 84' (we all know what happened after this...the recordings were shelved and Stevie went back to the drawing board w/o Iovine to what would become RAL released Nov. 1985)
Stevie and Dave Stewart had to have their encounter roughly around Spring/Summer of 84' while Iovine was working on RAL. Its no secret that Iovine was actively looking for collaborator's which would yield the almighty next hit single, he was instrumental in introducing Stevie to Dave.
Joe and Stevie had a very volatile and drug fueled relationship to which I'm sure they broke up many times in typical dramatic "Stevie" fashion during their fuzzy 2 yr. relationship which emotionally ended finally when Joe sent a car for Stevie in the middle of the night to share the final acetate of RAL before it's release, (inspiring the song "Long Way To Go".) She told her housemates at the time...This is a long way to go to say goodbye all over again...the encounter ended badly with Stevie leaving without her acetate and crying all the way home, vowing she would never be that vulnerable again!
Stevie has documented many strained occasions of Joe & her relationship during this era, remember the time she recounted that Joe ruined a session cause he was clowning around with her studio musicians, many of which Joe was also friends with, afterwards he told her he was flying to Australia the next morning...and she told him "if you walk out that door...you cease to exist".
This era was a very bloated and excessive time for Stevie. She was at her pinnacle as a solo artist...having accomplished the back to back trifecta that was Bella Donna-Mirage-Wild Heart, and coming off her very successful WH tour....and steadfastly into a heady and dysfunctional relationship with Joe Walsh. Undoubtably the RAL era was the unraveling of the Stevie Nicks the world had come to love, and would never see again till her unparralled re-emergence during "The Dance".
The dizzying combination of success, the death of Robin, impulsive decisions (marriage to Kim Anderson to start with....) dysfunctional relationships, alcohol and of course the ominpresent "marching powder" all aligned to shift Stevie forever. Its no wonder why many fans are fascinated by this time.

Good timeline, Chris. Interestingly I was listening to one of the Wild Heart shows from later on in the tour. She told the fans that the name of her next album was "Rock A Little". I thought this was funny cause we always considered all those demo songs to be 'mirror mirror' but I guess that was just the made up bootleg title. But it seems like RAL took so long to make - and she already had the title for the album in 83. She also went on to say the fans don't know what she is talking about! LOL.
Joe was very important to Stevie around this time...and a LOT of her songs from the RAL demos and later in the 80s are not about Lindsey...they are about Joe.

Yes I agree, Stevie loves to be in the throws of passion and misery...and her relationship w/ Joe inspired many compositions for RAL thru Street Angel...."Love is like a River", HAEWAFY, "One More Big Time Rock n' Roll Star" & "Long Way to Go" immediately spring to mind. And all the way up to TISL ("I Miss You"..she loved to talk to Joe about life and the price of fame during their relationship.)
While many insist that Stevie was originally going to call her 3rd solo record "Mirror, Mirror", I too recall Stevie mentioning in a article all the way back in August 1983, that she already knew the title of her next record was going to be "Rock A Little". As I digested everything Stevie back then, this stood out to me because I remember thinking it was an odd title for a Stevie Nicks record, not as mysterious or haunting as her former releases.

Off topic...I first became aware of Lone Justice when they opened for U2 in the early eighties. They only released two albums, but Maria has a very eclectic solo artist in a variety and genres for many years now. I've seen her a half dozen times. She's truely challenging and unique! There's also a touch of Grace Slick in her.
