..or just dislike, and why? Here are my confessions:

I felt asleep with the 3 MATRIX films. don't know why, but I didn't like them.
Citizen Kane. Sorry, I don't get it.
Passage to India. Another Valium
The Hours. Coudln't wait the hour to finish it!
Birth. Another Kidman nightmare. Sorry, some say this is a masterpiece. Not for me. And the ridiculous end of a bride crying in the sea. don't get married then!!
American Beauty. Not a bad movie, but a bit exaggerated. Sorry if I hurt my american friends, but it seemed to me they were imitating some good european movies. Don't change style, Hollywood is good being Hollywood.

Gone With the Wind.

Sputter, gasp, choke...what!? I know it's not PC, but I love this movie to death. Very excited about the blu-ray release, but I understand it's not for everyone. More Rhett Butler for me!

The Dark Knight - way too dark and jaded
Fight Club - ridiculous, adolescent, vapid
Requiem for a Dream - depressing & nihilistic

Every movie starring Tom Cruise except Risky Business. I fell asleep in the movie theatre during The Firm. My friends woke me up when the movie was over. I loved the book though!

Why are you people doing this to me?

Since I never answered the actual thread question: Twilight.

Fox and Hound. It makes me cry. D:

Gone With the Wind is TV right now! Hah, and I also dislike Starwars and other sci-fi movies. It's either something you're in to... or something you're not. And I'm not.

Twilight. Worst part? My mother is OBSESSED with Robert Pattinson.... she has a RP poster AND shirt, both hung up in her room. She spends her afternoons at work watching YouTube videos that fans took off their cell phones of him walking down the street. She is 46. It is nauseating.

I'm not sure Twilight qualifies as a "great" film, IMO.

I'd agree with you, but someone else listed it and it inspired me to complain some more about my mom's obsession with it.

The Matrix films would hardly qualify as "great" either.Upon seeing this thread I presumed it meant critically acclaimed and award garnering films that one would hate.I 'd have to say Forrest Gump would come to mind..just ponderous.

The Dark Knight - way too dark and jaded
Fight Club - ridiculous, adolescent, vapid
Requiem for a Dream - depressing & nihilistic

I agree on all of those.

Others I'd pick are:

A Clockwork Orange
Pulp Fiction (and yet, I like Jackie Brown)
Star Wars Ep 1, 2 and 3

Dodfather

The first 2 films on this list may be important for several reasons in cinema but that doesn't make them good.

Easy Rider
Taxi Driver (possibly the most over-rated film ever)

Pulp Fiction
Raging Bull

I'm sure to think of more soon enough...

I wasn't paying too much attention to the actual topic of the thread. I was thinking popular movies versus critically acclaimed. The only one I can think of is Lawrence of Arabia. I was extremely bored during that movie, and I normally love O'Toole.

"Gone with the Wind." Sorry . . . Can't stand it. It romanticizes womanizing and for me personally, all four hours of it basically
boil down to a shallow drama about a spoiled brat who eventually learns that it would be a good idea to change because
a war just burned down her entire state and impoverished everybody and their dog including her. Sorry, but she
should have figured that out by the end of the first reel. "As God is my witness I'll never be hungry again," rah-rah-rah
we get it, now get out in the field and work to repair your state like every single one of your neighbors already is. Sorry
to any fans, but I just simply don't get this movie.

Oh dear god, yes. I liked Forrest Gump, but otherwise - ick. For a while in the '90s, he was seemingly in every other movie that came out, and I just got sick of him.

Robin Williams is another one that I can't stand. I don't think he's funny. At all. Tim Allen, either.

She's even more dis-likable in the book, and dumber. Rhett rips her to shreds through the whole book, but it just goes over her head. The movie didn't really capture that aspect of the book, but despite her behavior you end up somehow rooting for her. How ruthless and passionate she is, which is why she survives while others who are stuck in the "old" ways fail in the New South, like Ashley. Plus I saw this movie when I was pretty young and was mesmerized by Vivien Leigh. I'm also a big fan of Clark Gable. I will say the romanticizing of slavery in both the book and movie is distasteful, but unfortunately a product of the times.

I forgot to say why I chose Gone with the Wind. I saw it for the first time when it was re-released in the movie theaters several years ago (late '90s?). I went with my mother and my mother in law, both of whom were SO excited to see this film in the theater! Omg it was so painful for me- PAINFUL! I get the whole point, and I get it was done in the 1930s but still...awful. I was still relatively new to The South (born and raised NYer), so I may have had some bitterness. I will give Vivien Leigh credit for making me hate her, though!

I agree about both. I also avoid Jim Carrey movies, I just don't think odd facial contortions are amusing.

I agree with you and the person you were commenting to. Tim Allen is not at all funny. Neither is Jim Carrey or Steve Martin for that matter.

But the HP books are AMAZING-- and that's coming from a Tolstoy and Fitzgerald fan :) They get more complex and dark as the series continues and its impossible to deny JK Rowling's ability as a storyteller.

Gone With the Wind is my favorite movie. I have a book on the making of it as well.

I read that The Untouchables was great, and I despised it. Absolutely as gory as any slasher film, with "heroes" who don't even believe in their cause. Junk!

That's the interesting of this world. So many people, so many opinions. I love GWTW, I love Scarlett, I loved the movie, I adore the book. I even love the "Making of" included in the dvd special edition.

And I still fall asleep with Matrix, and never liked Harry Potter. Lord of the rings.. was ok.

And I, on the other hand, have learned that I'm extremely easy to please! Love GWTW, LOTR, the original Star Wars movies, like the Harry Potter movies (the books are so much better), and enjoyed the Matrix trilogy although I don't have any desire to watch them again.

The English Patient and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
I tend to enjoy most films though

Totally with you on The English Patient. So boring it made me want to look around for something sharp to stick in my ear just to liven things up a bit.

Of course I like this one too, and even if you don't, you cannot deny Ralph Fiennes was looking might fine (ha!) in this one.

I can't remember if he was attractive or not - I think I blocked most of the film from my memory. Ralph Fiennes is generally good to look at, though, so I won't argue. ;-)

I actually prefer the book Scarlett to the movie Scarlett. I think the book did a better job of giving us her internal motivations, as it were, for behaving the way she did, so her actions are easier to understand.

But I love Scarlett's dresses in the movie. I want a dress big enough to knock people over. I would wear it to the grocery store.

It's been so long since I read it but I vaguely remember understanding her better in the book as well. Ditto on the clothing, I got a Scarlett Barbie with the green dress which I loved (as an adult, haha).
