View Full Version : "It's a song we like to call..."
Does anyone else chuckle when Stevie re-names her own songs on stage? For example...
"We like to call it 'I Have Always Been A Storm'" -- San Diego, CA 5-31-09...of course she called it the same thing every night of the tour it seems.
"I wrote this song. It's called 'I Never Promised You-'[nope, that's Lynn Anderson] 'You Never Promise Me A Rose Garden'" -- "Unaired" 1998 Concert
I know I'd be ready to punch someone in the face who insisted on referring to Dreams as "Thunder Only Happens When It's Raining"...but she kinda does the same thing sometimes.
But she's our girl!
Can anyone think of any other examples?

Well, there's kind of a little controversy on How Still My Love/Still of the Night. Haha, I don't get it! I guess they were both the names of books, right? :D Oh well, she can do whatever she wants, and I'll still be entranced! Such is ze magic of Miz Nicks!

i am still wondering how "if anyone falls" became "if anyone falls in love?" i have heard stevie do this @ her shows w/songs (" i never promised you a rose garden") =..i always thought either of two things: she truely forgets the names of the songs...as i forget the names of my kids sometimes...or she is a bit buzzed..and of course it could be a combo...which SOMETIMES is my excuse..either way..i don't care if she calls "talk to me" "go f*** yourself" i would still listen and love!!

A Bit Of Gold And Braid became Golden Braid.
And Bell Fleur should be Bell Flower. Just like in 1975 when FM was driving thru Maryland and Stevie saw the sign for Silver Springs, she lived in LA near the suburb of Bell Flower.
Whoever came up with Fleur anyway??

Actually I find it a big pain in the ass when she renames her own songs. It's STORMS. That's how it's called & named on the Tusk album, and that's how I will always think of it!

I always thought she originally called it "In The Still Of The Night" but as a song with the same title exists, changed it, either herself or someone else, but reverted back to the original title when talking about it onstage???

haha! that is very funny! And I do agree about I Can't Wait/ Go F*** Yourself" ! But "If Anyone Falls In Love" does annoy me more than the others, for some reason...

See now that one I knew as "Belle Fleur" first (I may be adding the 'e' at the end of 'Bell' but don't think so?)

Actually, 'Belle Fleur' most likely comes from the book by the same name, 'Bellefleur'. At least that would be my guess, considering that's where she got the line "Though deep-set and somewhat shadowed.." from for Golden Braid.
As for the title, I'd never seen it as anything but 'Belle Fleur' till the master reels appeared.

It doesn't bother me that much, because when you're seeing her live there's a novelty to it being given a different title - it makes it a little special - but I do remember that she introduced Say You Will on the 2003 concert I saw as Won't You Say You Will? and I thought WTF? It could've been a reference to Walter Egan's song Won't You Say You Will, but I didn't get that at the time. He's not that well-known over in the UK and it wasn't a line from her song. So when she expands on Beautiful Child and Storms or changes How Still My Love to In the Still of the Night, I don't mind because those are lines from the songs, but I didn't get that SYW reference and I kind of thought it was pointless. But that's just me.

Well you must be correct then. Stevie has a habit of taking lines from novels and putting them in her songs.
So you're telling me that when you got the master reel it said Flower not Fleur on it?
Thank you for this info BTW.

Yes and on Letterman 1994 she said that the song President Clinton selected for his campaign was "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow."
It's often not the artist who titles a song on the album. The producer does it in many cases. Shorter titles are almost always better.

Hmmm, I always thought the fleur thing was weird, too, considering I first saw the track titled "Bell Flower" and that phrase actually comes up in the song. Oh, the ways of Stevie's mind.... its easy to get confused.

There is also No Light/Planets of the Universe. Wasn't that one first called No Light, and than changed to POTU? Or I assume it was at least labled on the master reel as no light.
gold_dust - that SYW thing is really funny. Imagine all the titles she could strech out. "This next song is called -Have you any Dreams you'd like to sell me?" LOL.

You are correct. It was No Light.
Candlebright used to be called Dreamer or Something of a Dreamer.

I think it shows that her songs aren't stagnant.
Over time they take on new meanings. So I think its cool.
and plus they are her songs. she can call them whatever the fudge she wants.
but I don't think it is just a case of her forgetting the name.
maybe she gets bored easily and likes to shake things up a bit, who knows?

Or something like 'This is a song I like to call "When she is asked about the men in her life, she says they were poets, priests of nothing, but they were legends"'

Not to be picky or anything...but I think that Candlebright was originally called Nomad. The original demo version with Stevie and Lindsey is awesome!!

Stevie also sometimes introduces Sharon and Lori and she'll say something like "her name is Sharon but we like to call her Sharona" or "her name is Lori but we call her Loretta" etc. I wonder if in fact, they are ever called Sharona and Loretta by "we". The band is probably like "no we dont'!"
