Hi everyone,

So.. this is the first thread I've started on this section of The Ledge.

Since this is the chit chat part I thought it would be cool for us to know a bit more about each other if anyone is cool with that. So other than Fleetwood Mac and everyone associated with them, who are our other favourite bands?

I totally agree with John Cusack in High Fidelity when he says that you can tell a lot about a person by their music taste and that it's very important for starting conversations etc (in a non-judgmental way of course) so here goes my list of other favourites...

Oh, and that film of High Fidelity sucks - the book is amazing though!

Counting Crows
Emmylou Harris
Sheryl Crow
Carpenters (Karen was the best female pop singer ever in my opinion)
Bonnie Raitt
Ryan Adams
Matchbox 20
Beverley Knight
Neil Young
Kylie Minogue (all the way back from hear early late 80s stuff. You guys in the US missed SO much!)
Alison Krauss and Union Station
Pearl Jam
Steve Earle
Bruce Springsteen
Jackson Browne
Sara Evans
The Beatles
Dixie Chicks
Belinda Carlisle
Roxette
Sugarland
Linda Ronstadt (who has the same birthday as me - cool!)

Phew - I didn't mean to put so many! As you can see, bit of a country fan here, which can sometimes suck living in the UK!

Anyone else like many of the ones on that list? Looking at it I'm struck, as ever, by the fact of how un-British it is! I suppose I should add The Jam to help even it out!

Thoughts?

I may do a thread about favourite films and actors if this one goes well...

Lets definitely do films and actors! I'm a music and movie fiend-- more so music, but I'm always up to talk about great films.

Hi Danielle,

Ryan Adams is fantastic - although Cardiology hasn't grown on me yet, it will though! Heartbreaker, Gold, Easy Tiger to name a few are all great. Good call on Jose Gonzalez. Have you heard his cover verion of Kylie Minogue's Hand On Your Heart? It's really cool! Although you have to know the original to get just how different it is... Good call on James Taylor, although I prefer Jackson Browne, and of course the awesome Heart!!

I can't believe I forgot to put them on my list - I love Heart!! Oh, and Journey!

You have to keep trying with Cardinology-- once it hits you, its in your blood for life :) I like it better than Easy Tiger because its just a more solid album-- Easy Tiger has some great tracks but as one work, it isn't nearly as consistent IMO.

I have heard that cover-- phenomenal, like everything he does. I am a really really big fan of Jose's original work but he also has never failed me with a cover. His version of "Teardrop" is beautiful, too.

I've seen Heart like 4 times-- SUCH a great show again and again!

I'd LOVE to see Heart live but alas, one of the setbacks that comes from living in the UK. I know they've just done a tour with Journey - wow!! I live in the wrong country musically. I'l see them one day, I hope!

For me, honestly I dont have a terribly varied interest. I have basically 2 bands that I LOVE besides Fleetwood Mac. they are:

1. The Stereophonics

2. The Sundays

I first heard the Stereophonics when I was on holiday in Europe in 2002 getting on the ferry to crosss from Calais to Dover when their song Have A Nice Day came on the sound system on the boat. It was one of those moments where a lighning bolt hits you and you have to find out who this artistwas IMMIDEATELY! I fleew home the next day and bought the album that song was on that night, and the rest is history. TO me, Kelly Jones, the Stereophonics lead singer is one of the most incredible songwriters in modern music! As for The Sundays, I have ben a fan of theirs since their inception in 1990. Their lead singer is a lady named Harriet Wheeler, and to me she has the most angelic voice of any woman I've ever heard. Unfortunately they havent made an album since 1997.:( Incidentally, that large picture in my sig is when I met the Stereophonics back in 2005 when they came to Minneapolis. on the far left is Richard Jones the bass player. Kelly Jones the lead singer and guitar is on the other side of me with the hat on and Javier Weyler the drummer is on the far right.

I got into Carpenters about 15 years ago afte5r seeing that awful tv moie The Karen Carpenter story. Im 27 now so was only 12 but just loved the songs. Since then I've been a huge fan. Do you have Karen's solo stuff? The album is ok but patchy and the unreleased songs, well, there's onlureally one good one...

My all time favourite Carpenters song is 'A Song For You'

You're kidding?! It's in my top 3, along with Rainy Days and Mondays and Superstar! I can't quite out the 3 in order though. I love A Song For You. As for their other covers I also love their version of Desperado. That, Eagles amd Ronstadt's version are all fantastic. Their version of Help is mad - haha!

I think in terms of albums I'd have to go for A Song For You and Horizon as possibly the best 2. I do have a very soft spot for Made In America and Lovelines though. Passage and A Kind of Hush, not so much (with the exceptions of I Just Fall In Love Again and I Need To Be In Love, which was apparently Karen's favourite of all their songs).

I think my least favourite songs are probably Man Smart, Woman Smarter and Beechwood 4-5789 (as much as I like Made In America).

The only thing I don't have is Richard's Time album from the mid 1980s, which is IMPOSSIBLE to get apart from stupidly priced vinyl copies on ebay. The cd version has completely disappeared. It's frustrating. The one thing I need to get to complete my collection. Do you have it, is it any good? I've never thought I was missing out on much because I have Something In Your Eyes.

Other than the Mac my faves are Neil Young (who I worship), Wilco, The Flaming Lips, Neko Case, The Mars Volta, Bruce Springsteen, Hawksley Workman, Cat Power, Juliana Hatfield, Dinosaur Jr, Elliott Smith, Mark Lanegan, Greg Dulli, Jenny Lewis, My Morning Jacket, The Replacements, Tom Waits, The Jayhawks, Pearl Jam and Ryan Adams.
To name but a few. I could go on and on really.

GREAT call on Neil Young (I'm obsessed), Wilco, Neko Case, Cat Power (awesome live), Dinosaur Jr, Elliott Smith (although Damien Rice is even better-- check it out), Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley?, My Morning Jacket (Evil Urges is amazing), Tom Waits and, of course, Ryan Adams. :)

My other top favorite band is Hanson. It goes with the territory for people to think they're just those kids who sang "MmmBop", but they were so much more than that song even then and have only continued to grow as musicians and songwriters over the past twelve years. I essentially grew up with them having been a fan since the early days, I adore their music and style and their live shows are among the most fun I've ever had at concerts (and they never fail to bust out a kickass classic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FovFw0YBv6E) rock cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K3wvBLgseM) or two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDCkwsvmrN0&feature=related)). Great guys and great tunes.

I'm also really into Kings of Leon. I'm one of the fairly new fans in that I wasn't aware of them until Only by the Night came out, but I love their entire catalogue. Their sound is amazing and they are another band that gives me faith that people of my own generation can still put out some quality music.

Also high on the list are REM, the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys (especially Dennis), Matt Nathanson and Sister Hazel.

The Beatles, The Who, Heart, Three Dog Night, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Ambrosia, Andy Williams, Simon & Garfunkel, Sly & The Family Stone, Jackson 5, The Carpentars, The Hollies, Alice Cooper, Frank Sinatra, Helen Reddy Roberta Flack, The Bee Gees, Sheryl Crow, The O'Jays, The Spinners, 5th Dimension, Seals & Crofts, Gordon Lightfoot, The Violent Femmes, Romeo Void and a billion others I can't think of right now.

Hip Hop: #1 favorite= Ludacris
Mos Def, Styles P, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Bubba Sparxx, Eminem, The Pack, The Game and a million more rappers I know none of you give a crunk about.

I honestly can't stand alot of the newer country music out there. (I think much of it stems from the fact that a TV playing CMT/GAC sits in front of me all day at work.) But I looooove them. I've seen them live twice. They were the local opening act for Pat Benatar at the Wildhorse and then I saw them at CMA Fest. Excellent both times except for the fact they don't have a backing band yet...

GREEN DAY - I love them about half as much as I love Stevie, which clocks in at right about 'unhealthy obsession.' Sadly, even though I begged everyone I know who can drive, I found no one available to take me to their concert. I cried.

Paramore - I absolutely love both of their studio CDs, 'All We Know is Falling' and 'Riot!' and I'm superrr excited about 'Brand New Eyes'. I also didn't go to this concert. Even though my best friend and I had tickets. Our parents wouldn't let us go alone. :/ So we sold them.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I got to see them last summer, and we had 5th row seats! It was an awesome concert!

Cheap Trick - They were 'My Obsession' (hehe, that's one of their songs!) before I discovered who sang Silver Springs. :) I saw them two years ago, and stood on my chair the entire time to see Robin Zander over the 6 foot man in front of me. :)

Katy Perry - Some of her songs are strange, but I think she's pretty cool, and whacked out. :] I read her interview in Seventeen and she sounds more down to earth than the other current poppies. I have a Katy Perry t-shirt. :D

Nirvana - I'm not like a huge fan or anything, but I have their two studio CDs. And I like most of the songs, if I ignore the lyrics.

Secondhand Serenade - He's just cool, and I like several of their songs.

The Fray - I've listen to 'You Found Me' more than most people would care to.

Rihanna - She's also just cool, and her name reminds me of Rhiannon, which is also my name :)

Guided by Voices/Robert Pollard (my actual favorite); The Byrds (and all shootoffs); Wilco; Cheap Trick; Big Star; the Breeders; Material Issue; and the Replacements have been getting up there. And, I've developed a major soft spot for old punk bands (Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, the Stooges, the Rings) as well as bands like Velvet Underground, Wire, and Pere Ubu. I find myself appreciating the ACTUAL eccentric artists (screw you Lindsey).

In addition to that, of course, I love all of the other (main) projects of the other guys in my triubte band. Especially The Tasties and our vocalist Jesse Remnant. Their songs just give me gooseflesh. The other guys' stuff is killer, too (if not available on CD). I'm one of the luckiest people in the world to work with such talent on such a casual basis. I mean, there's nothing quite as cool to having a big practice, and then singing along with somebody in the band's CD on the way home!

I tend to hate "mainstream" music. There's so much more worthwhile out there, that it becomes very limiting. That includes classic rock, BTW. Sure, there are songs that still get me there (Funk #49, Start Me Up), but so much of it is REALLY tired by this point.

Good thread idea!!!

Some of my faves outside the realm of Mac:
Colbie Caillat (she counts lol)
Vampire Weekend (almost forgot them lol)-saw live
Maroon 5- seen live twice
Jason Mraz
I'm just getting into some ABBA, who are IMO a weak Mac
Franz Ferdinand
the Beatles, of course
Chester French (similar to VW)
the Killers
L'Homme Run (very few songs, but very good)
Lily Allen
Taylor Swift

Honestly, I find myself liking a few songs by one artist moreso than liking a majority of one artists songs. Which is another reason why I hold FM so dear- I only dislike maybe 12 songs during Rumours era, which is where my fandom lies. I mean I saw AC/DC Tuesday, don't get me wrong, they're really talented, but if not for the obv hits I wasn't as into it as the people I went with (but to be fair, I mostly went for a guy...) anyway I also like Alanis Morrisette, Dire Straits, and the Cars- but not everything in their catalogue. Two more honorable mentions are Tom Petty, and Supertramp

Oh geez, this is hard! I could list so many. Basically I like anything (but mostly easy listening / soft rock) from 50s-80s and some 90s. So here's an attempt off the top of my head.
Steppenwolf (Magic Carpet Ride is my all time favourite song); Dire Straits (Sultans of Swing is my second); The Monkees (Daydream Believer third); Toto (Africa fourth)
Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music (Avalon all time fav album); Lindsey Buckingham (Go Insane was brilliant); Stevie Nicks; Sting and The Police (Soul Cages FTW); The Alan Parsons Project; Billy Joel; Phil Collins and Genesis; The Moody Blues; Electric Light Orchestra; Elton John; John Lennon and The Beatles (I prefer Lennon, believe it or not!); Russel Morris (an Aussie); Roy Orbison; The Carpenters; Chicago; Bread; Split Enz; Santana; The Doors; America; Don McLean; Gene Pitney (Only Love Can Break a Heart is phenomenal!); The Eagles; The Beach Boys; The Pretenders; Jackson Browne; Frank and Nancy Sinatra; Sade; Van Morrison; The Motels; Joe Jackson; Otis Redding; Creedance Clearwater Revival; Bryan Adams; The Dream Academy (Life in a Northern Town is a great song!); Diana Ross and The Supremes; Abba (their later songs like Winner Takes it All); The Rolling Stones (song like She's a Rainbow and Angie were great, but I don't listen to them often); Dido; Michael Buble; Jet; Eskimo Joe; John Mayer (I don't like much else from 2000s)... I'm sure I've missed lots of bands where I'll go "Damn! How did I forget them?!", but that should be enough for now.
And just for the sake of it, FM is my all time fav band! Hooray for The Mac!

U2-I'm probably gonna get beat for this one, since there seems to be a lot of hate in the other thread.
Oasis-yeah, I'm sure a lot of you don't like them either!
Patty Griffin
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Sheryl Crow (glad she didn't join the Mac, however)
The Beatles
The Corrs
Coldplay-ducks
The Eagles
Ryan Adams and his various incarnations
Traveling Wilburys
Chris Isaak
The Rolling Stones
The Police/Sting
Tonic/Emerson Hart

I get it--the club is open! Were any sober people in that audience or on that stage? I can smell the beer thru my computer.

I don't get what you mean by this. I love Abba and of course there was the dynamic of 2 couples that split but that's where the similarity ends. Bjorn and Benny didn't write any songs about Agnetha and Frioda until the last 2 albums and the girls didn't write any at all (in the band, they did solo before and afater). During their miost successful period there also wasn't huge amounts of booze and coke. I just don't see any similarity at all that can make them a weak Mac, or any kind of Mac. Not criticising. As a fan of both I'm genuinely interested in what you think makes them similar.

She probably meant that each band had two couples in them. Over the years the media often pointed that out.

Essentially what I meant was that overall the groups and the dynamics are similar, but ABBAs songs aren't as passionate, or as good IMO as FM. Don't get me wrong, I like ABBA a lot, but they don't do it for me all the time like FM does.

Audience? Probably not. Most folks had been drinking for a day or so by that point. Granted, Miller Lite is the beer of choice in that crowd. The Pollard crowd is a pretty drunken one.

Stage? The band was (mostly) sober. I'm fairly certain Jesse (our singer) was sober, and that Pollard was drunk when he got up and sang with us. Luis (bassist) doesn't drink, but I'm not sure about where the other two were by that point, but I assume they were sober. I was only slightly buzzed when I took the stage, but that was only because I had been hanging out with people in the audience earlier in the day! People didn't come in to Dayton from parts unknown for a Bible reading.

Actually, the BEST part of that night was after our set, when Bob and a bunch of us took part in what has become the annual tradition of taking over the cover singer's set. It was a big, stupid, drunken mess. There is video. I'm not proud. I'm especially not proud of the part where me and this guy from the Baltimore area started singing "he got a microphone stand up his ass" for no apparent reason (that line was from the first really big party we had a few years back).

Speaking of Pink Floyd, I just heard Pigs(three different ones) for the first time in my life this past week and absolutely LOVED it. I can't believe I've never heard it B4!!!

Thanks Dod. Over the last ten years Shelby's released some great music.

I love Shelby but I'm an even bigger fan of her sister, Allison Moorer. I've fallen in a big fat pile of love with her album 'Miss Fortune' lately.

Hopefully I'll have a really big "SHELBY LYNNE STORY" soon.

I only have two of Allison's CD's "Alabama Song" and "Ultimate Collection".
She's got a great voice too.

Allison Mooorer is great. I actually only have the Ultimate Collection at the moment - I need to fill in the gaps. Very unususal that I don't have more of her stuff, cos I'm such a country fan. Ruby Jewel is a fantastic song - very dark though.

Allison Moorer and Steve Earle are on the list of coolest couples ever! Maybe they could do a joint tour with Shelby...but if they did it wouldn't come to the UK so I'd just be really jealous! That said, Steve is coming to my hometown in Decekmner, I can't wait!
