I T A! They only sound good with Eno -- and even then they're a poor man's Echo & The Bunnymen, Simple Minds, etc.

AC/DC.

Writing the same simplistic power-chord-driven male-posturing rock anthem set to I-just-ate-a-porcupine vocals for 35 years straight.

However, on the plus side, I have realllly started getting into Def Leppard!!! Love them!!

Well, I don't like most classic rock bands, but if I had to pick one it would be the Beatles, just because it seems like high treason to say you don't like them.

I do like the Rolling Stones, tho.

We're calling Metallica "Classic Rock" now? That's new to me.

The whole resurgence of Journey- particularly the obsession over "Don't Stop Believin"- I've found horrifying. I never thought there could be a song I'd despise as much as "I Will Survive", but thanks to the "OC", we have a new contender.

I don't like Led Zeppelin. I know!
And believe me, I've tried. I've tried soooo hard to like their music. But I just don't. Of course I like "Stairway to Heaven" but besides that and maybe one or two others, I don't like listening to them.

None of which I would consider "Classic Rock" bands....well, MAYBE "KISS", but that's stretching it.

My "despiser-oonies":

Journey (once Steve Perry joined...they were pretty good before that)
Styx
Kansas
Boston
Chicago (especially after their 2nd album)
Foreigner (after album #4)

Ok...who mentioned "The Beatles"??? That's heretical, sacreligious and downright satanic!!! Be GONE with you, HEATHENS!!!!! "High Treason" is right...that's a lynch-worthy offense!!!

Yeah, I definitely don't think of Nirvana as "classic rock," but I never liked all that angsty '90s alternative **** - even when it was actually current. It's weird to me how '80s music is so popular now. I loved '80s music when I was in high school (1993-97), but back then it was *not* cool.

QFT. They totally suck. Its just been the recent renaissance that revolves around the "so-bad-its-cool" theory where "Don't Stop Believin'" got its second life.

If Journey is good for anything, they definitely keep the heat off Foreigner (as far as commercial/often tacky classic rock bands go)

asia, my husband bought their cd recently, i about died~ i hated them in highschool & my hate has done nothing but gotten worse over the years~ it sucked in the 80's watching mtv, waiting for a stevie or a mac video to come on & it always seemed they played an asia video that i had to painfully sit thru to see stevie~

i used to hate the rolling stones, but they have grown on me, especially their way older stuff~

is there a thread about hated song?~ i like the doors, but hate "riders on the storm", still do, sucked then, still sucks now~ when i was little i used to play the radio softly at night & that song would always come on & scare the crap out of me:shocked: seriously~ i would hide under my covers too afraid to go change the channel & the song still freaks me out to this day:distress:~

Whoa I'm surprised at some of the bands named here. Metallica is together with FM my favourite band ever and I love 90's grunge and just rock in general.
Anyway, one band that's high on my "hate-list" is Supertramp,I dunno if that's even considered classic rock, but I think I might be allergic to them.

markolas
07-28-2009, 09:25 AM
Neil Young - I kinda like his country-rock stuff...like Harvest. But everything else? ick, ick, ick. I think he and Dylan (and most '60s rockers, for that matter) wrote most of their lyrics when they were bombed out of their minds. They make no sense, yet the rock critics cream themselves over it. I'll take Cole Porter over Neil Young singing about getting high in a burned out basement any day.

Tho, to be fair, Harvest Moon is a beautiful song.

the Beatles. like, I get what they did for rock and roll as we know it but I can't stand their music (or movies).

and I don't like Pink Floyd (except for Run Like Hell but thats it!)

I only listen to Rush to hear Neil's drumming.
I hated the whole 90s grunge crap.
I change the radio station whenever Areosmith comes on.
I don't like Bob Segar's voice....and Old Time Rock and Roll makes me want to vom.
I hate Rod Stewart's voice too.

also, I don't know if they are classic rock...but Focus really chaps my ass.

Ham hands Ginger Baker has nothing on Clive Bunker.

Quick trivia fact: Glenn Cornick, who was Jethro Tull's bass player at the time, was married to Judy Wong. Wong was a friend of FM, and later worked for the band.

Sticking to the original thread subject: Chicago after Terry Kath's death. They lost their soul when he accidentally shot himself. There was nothing to save the band from banal Peter Cetera songs.
There are many others, but this the band on my mind right now.

I'm really glad to see I'm not the only one who dislikes the Beatles. I wonder if it isn't a generational thing - those of us who weren't around when they were still together and didn't experience all the hoopla surrounding them are perhaps less likely to get what the big deal about them is. Maybe. They really did kinda take over everything - I think practically every pre-rock pop singer did a Beatles cover album in an attempt to stay current, and they were usually terrible. Even Ella did one, which I haven't heard. I cringe just thinking about it....

fleetwoodtrick
07-29-2009, 12:21 PM
I've never really liked the Beatles. My uncle had one of the original LPs with that picture of them with all of the fake bloody babies... thus causing me to strongly dislike them. And I still kind of do. :/ But then again, I haven't really heard very much of their music, and neither do I intend to, so no need to bomb me with links!

But the list goes on...

I HATE The Eagles. My mom has an Eagles obsession like I have a Fleetwood Mac obsession.

I HATE Def Leppard.

I HATE Led Zepplin, because they scare me very much.

I could think of more, but I really dn't feel like it. But hey, I like Nirvana! Kind of. LOL...

maybe "boring" wasn't the right word. I just can't stand them.
That flute....they way the dude singing and phrases his words. someone
and the drummer is good, but I can't get into the whole "look how fast I can play" solo in those videos. no soul.
((she says as she realizes she said she likes to listen to Neil Peart's drumming LOL)))

Interesting point(s). Though as you point out Neil Peart is soulless, and way too clinical. I never liked him when I was learning to play.

After Keith Moon, John Bonham, and Ian Paice, I went straight into progressive rock drummers: Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, and the Tull drummers (there were several). Looking back I guess they all did the "look how fast I can play" routine. Now that I'm much older (been playing since '83), I'm far more attracted to jazz drummers such as Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck), and Elvin Jones (John Coltrane). Morello is in rare company as a drummer who can play technically perfect, yet with the utmost feeling. Elvin Jones on the other hand is just a force of nature. I also like S. P. Leary who played with a lot of Chicago blues artists. That guy was something else. He makes blues drumming interesting.

Yet as a guilty pleasure I still find myself drawn to the big kit drummer that used to drive bands instead of today's beat thumpers.

If you want to talk individual Classic rock singers, Joe Cocker to me is like nothing short of nails on a chalkboard or swallowing a dozen razorblades. Absolutely the most hideous voice I have EVER heard! He is one of the few musicians where when I hear a song of his come on the radio I can tellin the first few notes and have to immideately switch the station.

Metallica
Stone Temple Pilots
Creed
Nirvana
KISS
Alice in Chains
Guns N Roses
Jane's Addiction

Now that's not to say I don't think that they all have some level of genius. I just don't care for them.

Alice? Oh nooooo!

It got its second life from the series finale of The Sopranos, right?

I never got the Dylan thing either, his voice is horrible and I can never get past that to his supposed poetry. I just don't get the appeal.

The Police. UGHH I absolutely cant stand them. Roxanne to me has to be one of the most unlistenable songs of all time.

I like them, but loathe Roxanne. I saw Sting solo a few years ago, and the torture went on for 10 minutes! I saw the Police at Wrigley, and mercifully it ran the usual time.

Why did the album cover turn you off them? I've never heard of someone disliking a band cause of the album cover.

I didn't initially see this until it was recently quoted. Do you realize your uncle has/had one of the rarest Beatle album covers? It's the infamous "Butcher" 'Yesterday and Today' cover and is now worth (mono-$7500, stereo $12,000)! Does your uncle still have it?

Capitol records didn't print many of them, and quickly replaced the cover. I'm sure a lot of them were burned in the south when the bible thumpers threw a collective fit over John Lennon's Jesus comment in 1966.

If you're a fan of the pop era of Fleetwood Mac, you're doing yourself a disservice not giving the Beatles a chance. Albums such as "Rubber Soul", and "Revolver" would fit nicely with any fan that likes "Rumours". I'll throw in "Abbey Road" as well.

There is also a number of ones that were printed with the original cover but because they'd already gone through when they had to be changed, they had the new cover pasted over the top. I have one of the ones that has had the second cover removed. It cost about $2000 as I recall and they're a good collectors item but not worth anything like the ones that never even had the second cover stuck over the top. I also have a piece of paper that has notes written by George Martin and then John Lennon over the top which is assumed to be in reference to the production of A day in the Life. It's pretty damned cool.

The Grateful Dead. their whole scene sounded so groovy when I was younger, and I thought that they would be a band I'd love just based on my friend Tim's raving over them (he was a Head, and would go on tour the entire summer all over the US)

than I heard them. I didn't find them appealing at all, and I was disappointed because I was expecting something so cosmic and far-out and instead it sounded just so average.

He lives in a multi-million dollar house. The man has money LOL. He also has several John Lennon paintings, but I know nothing about them, like if they're originals. They could very well be, because he has LOTS of original art in his house.

And as for the cover turning me off... I just thought that was gross. And that they probably had sick minds. But I'm sure I'm wrong, but I don't really care anymore. Because I'm sure that if I listened to their music, I'd love it and dive into the Beatles too. My poor laptop can't afford for me to love any more artists. What version is this?! All I know about that track is that it was written for Bonnie by Bryan Adams and I have it on The Bonnie Raitt Collection (the excellent collection of her 70s/early/mid 80s Warners material). I don't have the Nine Lives album that the song is from, it's meant to be pretty bad. I do like the song though, it's very different for her but very fun!

Have I been listening to the song on this collection all this time and not noticed Chris on backing vocals? I must know!! Haha.

I actually got into Bonnie after hearing her hit version of Thing Called Love. Like so many others under 30 I suppose. That song also got me onto John Hiatt. I like her stuff from Nick of Time onwards too. Luck of the Draw and Longing In Their Hearts are both great, although now we're into the 90s...

Overall I prefer her 70s output too though. Bonnie and Linda Ronstadt tended to swap songs a lot, which I love! Have to say I prefer Linda's version of Louise whereas Bonnie of course does the better version of Love Has No Pride.

Surely it's time she gave us a new album? Her last one was 2005 and she's normally more regular than that with her releases. Oh well.

I had one of those brilliant fortuitous accidents with seeing Bonnie live. For some strange reason I wasn't aware of her live dates (I usually am!) and was visiting somewhere to go and see a gig on a sunday night and decided to go down on the saturday morning and have a day wandering around just chilling before meeting my mate on the sunday. I was walking past the venue on the saturday afternoon and I saw a poster of Bonnie and when I saw the date she was playing...it was that night!

I walked into the venue and asked if they had any tickets left and they did! Also because I was on my own I got one of the few standing ones left (there are always a few left because very few people just book 1 ticket at a time) so I got a great position in the crowd, made all the better by the sheer surprise of the whole thing! I had Matchbox 20 the following night which is what I'd gone for in he firsr place. 2 great gigs in 2 days!

She was fantastic!! Think I was the youngest person there though, haha! I was 25.

My goodness...someone else under 30 in the UK who likes Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt! I was feeling very alone..haha! Whereabouts in the UK are you?

The firsr release I actually bought was The Best of Bonnie Raitt[/I], that collection of her late 80s/90s stuff on Capitol that came out in 2003. I bought it because I'd heard and loved Thing Called Love. After that I got more and I now have Give It Up, Takin' My Time, Sweet Forgiveness, Nick of Time, Luck of the Draw, Longing in their Hearts and Road Tested. Along with that collection of her Warners material I mentioned. I've got loads of her other albums on spotify and listen to them a lot so I'm familiar with them. I just need to pick them up to fill in the gaps.

Have you heard the Carpenters version of Two Lives from Sweet Forgiveness? It's on Voice of the Heart (1983) and it's really good. I actually knew it before Bonnie's one.

What a strange post! I realise you didn't ask for my own Bonnie collection information!

Why not throw in The Beatles for good measure? Holy ****.

Might I suggest trying out any of the Classic 7 from the Moodies for starters, and Stand Up, Aqualung or Living In The Past from Ian Anderson & Tull. Or just spin up one of their Greatest Hits collections - though that would hardly scratch the surface of what comprises either of these bands' extensive catalogs.

I suspect you have a hard time with anything Mac prior to say '75? And certainly anything that constitutes so called Progressive or Art Rock (aka Classical Rock)?

Peter Cetera gets off WAY too easy for all the **** he foisted upon listeners of popular music in the 80's.

I'm with this question. There's such a huge difference between late 60's/early 70's Chicago and then the post-Terry Kath stuff. I won't lie, I like all eras of Chicago, but I can see why people loathe the power ballad stuff. I always thought the best songwriter in that band was Jimmy Pankow anyway.

There's such a huge difference between late 60's/early 70's Chicago and then the post-Terry Kath stuff.

You're right about the group's eras (late 60's/early 70's Chicago vs their later "lite" stuff) but the oft-attributed tailing-off of the band due to Terry Kath's untimely - and ultimately senseless - death is hardly accurate. Kath was in the band for quite a few years while it was choking and spiraling into a sugary mess. In some ways I view his death as getting out well past the nick of time (was he subconsciously putting himself out of obvious misery?). Ok that may be stated in less than stellar taste, but really... I might have done the same intentionally if I had to put up with one more Cetera power ballad.

I always thought the best songwriter in that band was Jimmy Pankow anyway.

I always felt it was Robert Lamm myself, with Pankow pulling up the rear as needed. Add a sprinkle of Cetera - and only a sprinkle - and you would have set things about right. But in the end not only was Kath's clout and contributions largely lost in the mix, Lamm and Pankow's songwriting and stylistic abilities started to tank too.

Beginnings, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?, I'm A Man, Questions 67 And 68 ... all from 1969 alone. Where oh where did the originality and promise of the Chicago Transit Authority sound go? :(

After reading through all the masses of people's least favourite bands i only have one contribution to keep it simple, I'm not sure that it counts as Classic Rock but it's from the Seventies...(actually i'm pretty sure it's country)

How could I forget Rush. I effin' can't stand them and they've been around as long as Fleetwood Mac.

I love Rush! ♥.

Okay, so I definitely not a fan of Nazareth. They would be who I would pick if I had to pick ONE. But then again, who IS a fan of them? I seen them a few summers ago but didn't have the heart to tell my friend I was going with that I can't stand them.

Others I loathe:

Metallica
Genesis (Besides the odd song)
That one with Kurt Cobain in it... for the life of me I can't remember.. oh.. Nirvana
The Grateful Dead
Could never get into the Who or Pink Floyd

The Doors(I like a few songs)
Grateful Dead

Bob Dylan

Fleetwood Mac (especially when that guy Stevie Nicks joined and brought his girlfriend Lindsey Buckingham along ;))

Music genres can get kinda silly, you get too many genres and they start overlapping. The MusicChoice channels on my TV have a "Classic Rock" channel for 60's and 70's pioneers of rock music and a "Retro Rock" channel for bands like Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses. Remember some artists qualify in several genres, just depends on the song and album, really.

As far as bands I never cared for, I never got the whole "Beatles" thing. I've listened to some of there songs...yeah not exactly the best vocally and that's what I look for in my music, hence my love of the Mac!!

I used to hate the Beatles because I always felt they were horrifically overrated and their importance greatly overstated. After listening to their catalogue outside of their cliche hit singles, I no longer feel that way... they were highly innovative, and definitely way ahead of the curve. Not only that, I genuinely enjoy the hell outta the Beatles outside of the garbage such as "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and similar bubblegum trash they recorded early in their game.

Bands/artists I truly despise?

I am revolted every time I hear Guns N' Roses. Pretty much the same for Jethro Tull. Never been a big fan of the Rolling Stones. U2 lost their magic after Joshua Tree, IMO. Especially their material from the past 10-15 years is just extremely pompous sounding to my ears. The vocalist from Rush is nails on chalkboard to my ears. Creedence Clearwater Revival has always struck me as a horribly cheapened imitation of real delta blues... WTF does a white dude from Northern California with a lady's bobbed haircut know about that kind of music? Chicago is almost as annoying to me as showtunes. I used to love John (Cougar) Mellencamp, but I now find him to be highly disingenuous. I feel Bruce Springsteen is just as insincere, and on top of that, his voice sounds like he's straining to take a giant crap.Elvis Costello's voice and style of singing annoy the sh!t outta me.

I'm sure there are others I'm neglecting!

I loved the U2 cd 'Achtung Baby' a lot. I haven't been able to stay interested long enough in their material since, but to me 'AB' is their best cd, with each song building til there's a dozen great songs on the cd. So, for me, it surpasses 'Joshua Tree' by miles. Just the fresh, Euro angle really worked on 'AB' for me.
Oh, Louie- no Rolling Stones, really? If ever interested, I'd recommend starting with 1971's 'Sticky Fingers' and then maybe 'Some Girls' or cherry picking two late '60s albums. I admit I've had no interest in their newer material but 'Gimme Shelter' alone makes The Stones a must spin on my cd player at least once a month.
I've been wanting to find 2 Stones songs- 'Dandelion' and 'We Love You' and don't even know if I have them, anymore. '40 Licks' has most of the essentials- but some great tracks- like those 2, are left off of it.

I remain firmly convinced that Steve Perry won't go back to Journey, because he can't hit the notes anymore. Do you know HOW MUCH bank they could make, with HIM?
If you watch the Escape Tour dvd, and the Raised on Radio dvd, there was a pretty big change in his vocal quality, in just those few years. If he can't hit the notes anymore, I for one applaud him, for going out on a high note, and leaving his legacy intact. Something some other musicians could take a lesson from(not naming names, clears throat and thinks of a certain band we're all here for).

This is an old-ish thread that I've apparently posted on already; I wouldn't take back any of the posts I made on here a year ago. But the list of rock bands that I *do* like would probably be a lot shorter than a list of the ones I don't.

There are a few bands/artists mentioned here that I have mixed feelings on.

U2: I like The Joshua Tree, but that's about it; Bono is incredibly pretentious and annoys the crap out of me.

Springsteen: I pretty much only like Born in the USA, which I know Springsteen fans generally hate. And louie, I agree that he sings like he's really constipated. lol

The Eagles: I like them in theory; if you ask me if I like individual songs of theirs, I'll say yes to most of them. But if you ask me what I think of The Eagles in general, I'll say they're boring as hell. I rarely listen to them.

Somebody mentioned Billy Joel. I can't effing stand him. Oddly, I love Elton John, at least up through 1980.
