Okay guys... I thought this might be fun!!
If this has been done before, then forgive me -- but I haven't seen anything on here about this in a fun poll format.
So... who is the true "great love" of Stevie's life?
A. Lindsey Buckingham
B. Mick Fleetwood
C. John McVie (*hides under desk*)
D. Don Henley
E. Joe Walsh
F. Jimmy Iovine (hehe... had to!)
Justify why you voted the way you did!

I myself had to go with Lindsey. I'm a total shipper. *sigh*
This quote from Stevie from 2003 pretty much sums it all up:
“Now I just adore him,” says Nicks, with ravishing candour. “He is my love. My first love and my love for all time. But we can’t ever be together. He has a lovely wife, Kristen, who I really like, and they are expecting their third child. The way he is with his children just knocks me out. I look at him now and just go, Oh, Stevie, you made a mistake!”
Heartbreaking.

It's always been Lindsey.....except for when she's mad at him for some reason or another. I always wonder what it would have been like for them if they had never joined fleetwood mac. Do you think they would be together today? I'm not sure.
Yes FMLex, I also love that quote.
I consider myself a bit of an un-shipper. I'm not convinced they're still boning, but I'm fascinated by their 30+ year unrelationship. And that is why I voted for Lindsey. Who's the one she can't escape? And probably doesn't want to for the most part.

Definately Lindsey. She's obsessed with the man.

Without sounding too much of a shipper - it's always been Lindsey, hasn't it? I think the only reason she throws all of these other men's names into the mix is to:
a) Confuse the press/fans/people in general.
b) To sound like she's not pining after a married man.

Great point, Black Moon!
I think she publicly talks about these other men as a way of sort of telling herself that it wasn't just Lindsey. But she knows deep down in her soul that it's always been Lindsey.

I think Lindsey is her great musical muse, but that does not make him the love of her life.

In my completely unbiased opinion, I picked Lindsey. What a combustible, crazy-making, awesome love that was in its time. They really loved each other before they were somebodies, and that's gotta mean something. Did I pick right? What kind of prize do I get? :D
LOL John McVie. Is there something I haven't heard?

I voted Lindsey I honestly just think that he is love of her life and she is the love of his now that doesn't mean that she didn't love Joe Walsh just as much but in the long run I just think its one of those things that's just obvious.

Where's the "Other (explain in post)" option? Who are we to say that we know that Stevie's "great love" is amongst the handful listed?

Quite obviously John McVie. Given Stevie's past of "spreading the love around", I find it curious that we have never heard anything about her and John. The only conclusion I can reach is that John is her true love, and it has been kept secret because it is so special to her.

I agree with this. I'm also an un-shipper because I think that they're not still together but everyone has someone who they can never quite get out of their head. You just find a place to keep them. It just so happens that her person is in her band!
It also never ends well if you hook up with them once randomly because it means more than that, I think so anyway. See my Thrown Down thread, lol.

I think people read more into the lindsey stevie relationship because of the way she dramatizes everything, and alot of that may be for dramatic effect and to enhance the history of the songs and maybe some of it has to do with the fact her other relationships were just plain awful.
The question should not be who did stevie consider the real love of her life, but which of these men really ever loved stevie?
I have serious doubt about Lindsey, he seems to be more possessive than anything. he certainly never wrote any beautiful love songs about stevie and seems most of the time to have contempt for her
I have read alot about the time when lindsey and stevie were together and it strikes me even then that relationship was toxic from the start. all the stories like when he left her during that period she wrote landslide, after coming back from the everlys tour, he left her in aspen with no way back to LA. there are tons of these stories of his possesiveness.
her first action after getting some money from joining mac was to get her own place. I dont know, maybe one day he will write a bio, her versions of things changes yearly. But I don't think this is a great love story or even a love story at all, just two amazingly talented people who hooked up in san francisco and san jose, moved to LA , met the the mac and changed the world with their talent.
Even reading storms, mind you taking into account the writer but she was with buckingham longer than stevie and him dated, you never get the fact that this was a beautiful love affair between nicks and buckingham and that the the break up effected Buckingham as much as Stevie would like to think. He rarely seems to have cared for her except on stage during those hugging bits they do.
like someone said alot of this buckingham- nicks love affair is fleetwood mac mythmaking and part of the whole rumours affairs gone bad stuff and the onstage shtick they do tour after tour . The lov eaffairs are part of the allure o0f fleetwood mac for some people at least
I think Joe walsh probably was the one she really loved the most,at least she claims he was "The One". it may change though, in next years interviews and be John mcvie. her life story changes every year.
she deserved alot better than any of these guys, I would of loved to have heard more about that young guy she dated, the waiter.whatever happened with that?

In one of the more recent interviews, Stevie said that no man ever loved her more than Lindsey did. I don't know if it's true or not and I think she said it at the time because she was annoyed with him. Even so, I think she believes that he loved her more than any one she's ever dated ever has.
As for Aspen, she never said he ditched her, with no way back. He drove back, but I don't think it was against her will. I would imagine that angry with each other, they worked it out that he would drive back with the dog, probably because she didn't want to do all that driving alone. And she would go back on Greyhound and I can hear her telling him she could travel all around the country for free with her dad being the second in command and everything -- without realizing there was a bus strike going on. The only reason she was stranded is because she wasn't able to take the bus back as she had planned.

I think she was being straight up about Lindsey being the "man who loved her most". It seems obvious even. What kind of man is hell bent 40 years later to "work things out" with a woman he's not involved with on some emotional level? LOL. That's hysterical.
And, you don't hear Stevie talking about being left alone on the bed when any of the other "love of her life" die...
Anyway, the Aspen story cracks me up too. I love it when Stevie said she had to get her parents to wire her money or send her a plane ticket and they were like, what are you even doing there in the first place?? Obviously, they didn't know she had followed Lindsey to Aspen and was waiting on him until the Everly tour was over.

You are probably right about the story in colorado Michele. it just seems to me there seem to be so few happy memories between them and so many arguments. so much of their relationship was just about being famous which is what happened but once they did acheive success they split pretty quickly.
they seemed to have split up or were on the rocks even before mac. I really wonder sometimes how much lindsey really ever loved stevie, sometimes people confuse possessiveness and dependence with real love. who knows, I wish stevie would release her journals but it wont happen for along time if ever
Buckingham just seems to never talk with any happiness about the past with her or mac and i dont think he ever wrote her a nice love song, but he certainly has a wonderful life with his wife, kids and their gorgeous house so maybe he doesnt care about the past.
here is the story about stevie and aspen
stevie nicks-
" Landslide I wrote in Aspen. Three months before I joined Fleetwood Mac, along with Rhiannon. And uh, that;s where the snow-covered hills come from. And I was definitely doing a whole lot of reflecting when I was up there. Lindsey was on the road with the Everly Brothers and I was very unhappy and very lonely. And trying to figure out why he was out with the Everly Brothers and I was in Aspen with $40 and my dog and my Toyota that went frozen the day we got there. And we thought he was going to make like lots of money. He didn't.
He came back to Apsen and he was very angry with me ~ and he left me ~ took Ginnie the poodle and and the car and left me in Aspen the day that the Greyhound buses went on strike. I had a bus pass cause my dad was president of Greyhound, I had a bus pass, I could go anywhere. I said, 'Fine, take the car and the dog, I have a bus pass.' I had a strep throat also. He drove away, I walk in on the radio it says 'Greyhound Buses on strike all over the Unites States.' I'm going, oh no, I'm stuck. So in order to get out of Colorado I had to call my parents and they unwillingly sent me a plane ticket because they didn't understand what I was doing up there in the first place. So I follow him back to Los Angeles, that was like October, it was all around Halloween, two months later Fleetwood Mac called on New Years Eve."

I had to vote Lindsey! Of course I am a shipper.. :xoxo: But with all the songs she writes about him and just the way they look at each other. It may all be a put on but still.. if it is they are good at acting. I just love the idea of them together. And this is by far one of my favorite quotes!

So few happy memories? That's a pretty big assumption. We have no idea what their private life was like. They were together for a few years prior to their catapult into stardom. I think they were a normal, happy couple who struggled with the same issues and problems that all couples do. They were "a little on the rocks" prior to FM because they were realizing the gravy train was running out (all their finances were depleted) and their album had bombed, Lindsey's dad had died, Stevie's grandfather had died, and her dad had given her an ultimatum to actually do something with her life. That's a lot of strain in a short period of time on any relationship. Overall, though, they seem to have great senses of humor and I'm sure have shared a lot of happy times that remain as they should be - private.
We can't expect to know about happy things and good times. I mean, all we really need is the drama to keep buying the music, right?!
If Lindsey and I had just been happy, happy, happy there would have been no Go Your Own Way- it would have just been like here we are happy, happy and the audience would have been like, ok well next couple! Stevie Nicks CNN 2009
Go, on - sell it! Sell it!! :D

Yeah, working things out.
Lindsey really seems to have an enduring soft spot for both Stevie and Mick. And I'd like to think the English dame as well, but I'm feeling a little disheartened on that score.
Anyway, I was always moved thinking about that part in Mick's book after the Tango argument when he said Lindsey sat out in his car for a long time, but none of them was in the mood to go after him. That little detail of LB sitting alone in the car, not leaving, not going back, says so much.

I think that Under thte Skin is a beautiful love song,
Yeah, and going back in time, if it's about Stevie, even the early DLMDA is a beautiful love song.
Then, as we get to Rumours, saying I'd give you my world, but you won't take it from me is quite a beautiful sentiment. In that context, the "you can go your own way" part can hardly be interpreted as callous disregard. It's not even a false show of bravado or disinterest, considering he's already bared his soul.
The words might be wrathful heard in a vacuum, but when paired with a lyric saying I'd give you everything, but you won't let me, so you can go your own way, the anger can't be seen as anything but a thin wrap for the pain and hurt.
Stevie cries that "beautiful love song" plaint, but except for the softer musical tone, there's nothing more tender about the loneliness driving you mad sentiment in Dreams than the "another lonely day" one in GYOW.
