View Full Version : "What if..." -- alternate versions

As a collective group of what I presumably consider the biggest Fleetwood Mac fans around, I'm sure we've all considered the following questions. I want to know your responses! If you could magically unleash new, high quality recordings, tell me about what you'd choose as an alternative version of a released or unreleased song?

For example, I want an a capella version of "Crystal" with nothing but Lindsey and Stevie's voices together.

Also, I would have loved if "Smile At You" on Say You Will more closely resembled the angry version. And finally, I would KILL for a high quality version of the piano demo of "Silver Springs" that I requested a while ago.

I'd like soundboard quality shows to magically appear and fall into my lap of every show Fleetwood Mac ever played.

(or atleast for the entire Mirage tour)

LOL not like that will ever happen.

Hmmm great idea but I'll change that a little. I'd like a soundboard recording for every live performance of "Rhiannon", "Sisters of the Moon", and "I'm So Afraid", "Gold Dust Woman" and "Angel." Can't be too picky :)

Woah...that would be amazing.

Um...I would like the infamous 16 minute version of Sara...but produced exactly like the album version...NOT just the demo.

A nice, high quality version of If You Were My Love, ala Mirage Sessions, but taken to the next level, would be amazing.

I'd also request higher quality versions of Down Endless Street and You & I Part 1...but I guess they were B-Sides, correct? My 12-inch single is a misprint though...I have Part 2 instead. The versions I have are from the Tango Sessions, and I just feel like the quality could be better.

Two others I just thought of...

You Make Loving Fun with both the "it's all I wanna do" and "beginning to wonder why/feeling it's time to try" lines at the end.

Edge of Seventeen with "I know what it sounds like...when the doves cry" at the end, as an homage to Prince. Yes, I know, she hated Purple Rain and now they don't speak. I just always thought it would be the appropriate ending to that line. I sometimes sing it that way, and I always think...it must've crossed her mind...at least once.

Ooo...this is fun!

Ugh I TOTALLY want that version of "Sara".

I also want like a 15 minute long soundboard recording of a super emotional, coked out Rhiannon live. Like, 2 minutes of the verses and 13 minutes of "dreams unwind...", getting taken by the sky, listening to Stevie wail like a lunatic and finish the song crying....

Omg I'd give both of my kidneys for that.

I'd keep at least one kidney, but still

Here's what I know about from the sound mix board:

tour rehearsal ("Sisters of the Moon")
US Festival 9-05-82
East Rutherford 9-14-82 ("Sara")
Memphis 10-12-82
Baton Rouge 10-13-82 ("Sara," "Hold Me")
Baton Rouge 10-13-82 (entire show)

I would love to have all the Live concerts from the Tusk Tour that I currently don't have. There's about six of 'em.
I'd also love to have a DVD copy of the FM show from the first night of the Unleashed Tour. I know it exists. It was promised to me, but never delivered.

You don't by chance need the one from St. Louis, MO, do you? I believe it's from September 1979. I just uploaded it on Mediafire and could easily post it for you if that's one of your missing ones.

You know what, I don't think I've ever heard this whole show. I know the Tusk Doc we have been talkin' about in another thread took it's performances from this/these? show(s). Me, the expert on the Tusk Tour and I can't remember if there was 1 or 2 St. Louis shows?
Yeah I'd love to have it. Any possiblity you can post it as a zip file or Mp3's? I can't do torrents. If it's to much of a hassle don't worry about it.

One show I can think of offhand from the Tusk Tour I don't have and would like is from Wichita, Kansas in August 1980.

I remember reading a long time ago that she attended the Purple Rain premier and left half way through because she was offended by it. Of course, I can't find the quote now...so take it with a grain of salt. There may be more to the story...

What I was trying to say was that I would like a version similar to this, but better. My understanding is there are about 10 shows where Stevie may or may not have sung the "Is this what you want" line, but I believe Mobile is one of the few, if not only show in circulation. When you read Mick's description from his book, you imagine it to be a lot more emotional and haggard...where as this is just sort of coked out. And like I said, the quality could always be better, if we're talking about wish lists. Still awesome though. Here you go...

I don't have quite all of those. Not sure if soundboard is the best word - for example my US Fest show is only B quality, even though, I guess, it is considered soundboard since it wasn't an aud. recording. Maybe I should change my first request to A+ quality. There are some very high quality aud. recordings out there.

It only characterizes the technical method with which the performance was recorded -- direct line via the mix board, no mic.

Here's the best audio quality I have from my US Festival soundboard -- Dreams is the example:

Thank you David. The quality is no problem for me when it comes to the Tusk Tour. Can you spare me a little Rhiannon from this show?I probably threw out my cassette awhile ago. The last several years, I seem to have no patience for the rotten audio quality of so many of our audience recordings & demos. Some of my soundboards have that awful sound-editing that people apply to their files, using freeware. I wish people WOULD NOT DO THAT!!!!
It leaves a horrible tinny ringing sound on the files that is awful. PLEASE, everyone, do NOT sound-edit the files you share. Let others do that themselves to their own copies if they want. Most people who apply the sound-editing techniques in WAV & MP3 editing programs apply WAY TOO MUCH. Those little levers are very sensitive in the GUI.

If anyone has any of the following soundboards in NON-SOUND-EDITED MP3 files, ripped at 160 bitrate or higher:

Yokohama 2.13.80
Baton Rouge 10.13.80

I'm trying to fix my Memphis (10.12.82), Oakland (10.20.82), & Sydney (3.15.80) files right now.

I'd like soundboard quality shows to magically appear and fall into my lap of every show Fleetwood Mac ever played.

Well, a pretty decent recording has surfaced of Fleetwood Mac's VERY FIRST gig, so anything's possible.

But, wouldn't the shows get kind of redundant during the Rumours (latter legs), Tusk, Mirage, The Dance & Say You Will tours?

I could see wanting shows back when each show was fairly fluid and song choices changed pretty much from show to show (from 1967-76)...but from the mid-summer of 1977 onwards, once the set was static, DAMN!!, it was static. Maybe having two or three recordings from different legs of each tour (when they'd tweak the set slightly...EVER SO SLIGHTLY) would be good, but jeez, from hearing recordings from The Dance and Say You Will tour, one would suffice just nicely.

All those Sisters renditions throughout the '82 tour were quite good -- & quite similar in their passion. (My favorite was the Irvine Meadows rendition.)

One recording I've always wanted is the version of Castaway from the Uncirculated Rumors album. The first one, with the drum machine and organ. It sounds like she's singing into a tape recorder then dropped the cassette into a fish tank then tried to dry it with a hot air blow dryer. Than ran a magnet over it a few times just for good measure. The song, in my opinion, is brilliant and the harmonies she does are incredible, but the quality of the recording sucks. I would soooo love to hear what the original recording must have sounded like.

My second request, since we're talking fantasy, I'd love to hear Castaway if it had been fleshed out into a full studio song.

-Stevie/Lindsey doing the Coffee Plant material and Races Are Run, the Mac doing the rest of the Buckingham-Nicks record
-acoustic Seven Wonders, Edge Of Seventeen, I'm So Afraid
-Lindsey singing Songbird at the piano (or maybe trading verses with Stevie, and/or maybe playing it on acoustic guitar instead of piano)
-Stevie singing Glitter Fades with Lindsey on piano
-live concert with no backing musicians/singers -- just Lindsey Stevie Mick and John -- power trio!

What if somebody had recorded Stevie and Lindsey's first show with Fleetwood Mac?

Actually, I bet that show kinda sucked. Oh, it's still better than anything they've done since 1995, but the chemistry probably wasn't there yet.

An instrumental of Stevie's version of "Crystal" from Practical Magic.

I would say:

HQ versions of:

The Dealer (Mistress of my fate)
Julia (is no Fool)
Smile at You (angry version)
The Tower (the piano one)
Sisters of the Moon (piano demo)

and many others....

I'd give my firstborn child for Tango in the Night live, Big-Love style or album-style. I'm not picky :p

I want a remastered, crystal clear recording of Stevie's HBO special...the WHOLE show. I know it's out there. I want Stevie to release it. I also wouldn't mind a soundboard recording of "Juliet" from OSOTM tour.

It would be good if Lindsey and Stevie put out an album of songs that would have been used if they had done a second Buckingham/Nicks album. Stevie had said that "Rhiannon" and other songs that went on their first album with FMac were already written for it, so I just wonder if they would have sounded differently as Buckingham/Nicks material.

The biggest What if...? of them all:

What if the rest of Fleetwood Mac (CM, SN, LB, JM) had joined Mick Fleetwood on his musical sojourn to Africa? Imagine Edge of Seventeen with that African choir. And weep for what the world lost because the fivesome no longer shared a vision.

Even in my daydreams, I really could never imagine that Stevie would have Ever done that:) Still, I was kind of surprised that Lindsey didn't go for it since he was so into experimental sounds.

I have the Hollywood Bowl show from 9-01-80, I just haven't had time to listen to it yet. Now I will...

Thanks for the higher quality Mobile Rhiannon...it's much nicer. Do you have the whole show at 192? What would I have to do to convince you to post it?
Love your new sig pic Lala

I don't know if this Juliet is soundboard (it could be) but it's extremely good quality.

That Mobile 'Rhiannon' is a keeper, thanks for the download of it. I'd gone back to youtube about 5 times in the past 2 weeks just to blare it with the headphones, and now this download mp3 of it is way clearer quality. This 'is that what you want' version is up there with the Rosebud and 'Whos The New Girl' boot cd version I've long loved. For now, it's my favorite 'Rhiannon'... Funny how sometimes you do just get into the mood for a
"Whole Lotta-Rhiannon"- like clockwork, every 10 years or so.....I think I need to dig out a Mirage Rhiannon next.

I think nothing beats the version from the Mirage DVD.

This is AMAZING!!! I need the MP3 to this!! I mean, I'd probably stand up and jump up and down if I could get my hands on this. My computer, car, MP3 player, work computer, etc. would get a daily dose of this!!

A very weird one, and I'm not sure if it counts as an 'alternative', but I want to hear Stevie sing Poison by Alice Cooper.
I don't really know why.
:sorry: :o
