Crosby, Stills and Nash

Not only did Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks dish to me in our July issue about the record that changed her life, Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark, in the interview she also revealed her first music crush: Crosby, Stills and Nash. “If you can’t fall in love with those three guys, you can’t fall in love,” she said. Since then, I’ve been obsessed with CSN’s 1969 self-titled debut—not only because their folky tunes make me want to revisit denim-on-denim (see Graham Nash on the album cover, far left), but their groovy harmonies (download “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”) eerily remind me of Fleet Foxes, one of my favorite modern-day bands. For CSN newbies like me, Crosby, Stills and Nash will be available in vinyl from Rhino this fall. Something tells me Stevie’s still got her original copy.

"....and if you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with...." Oh yeah, I think it's fair to say that Stevie has certainly lived by those words a time or two....or three....or four..........

I agree with Lisa, Crosby wasn't always a pudgy, jailbird. Plus he inspired Dennis Hopper's character in Easy Rider. That's pretty damn cool. And maybe it's just me, I prefer the idea of her crushing on Crosby than getting down and dirty with Dave Stewart or Waddy Watchel :distress:

All three looked great back in the 60s though. Back then I wouldn't say no to any of them.

That said, at the Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert, Stevie looked happier cozying up to Neil Young.

You're right, it's just the thought of running my hands through Waddy's scraggly, thinning hair is sometimes too sexy for my mind to handle.

omg, me too! Even if she just covered one of his songs, but a collaboration would be the ultimate. Plus, that picture of them together at that tribute has to be one of my favourite photos ever. That said, Neil has his hands full with these two lovely ladies.

All I know is that even pudgy, jailbird, whacked-out-of-his-mind-on-coke David Crosby is more attractive to me than Waddy in his best Sunday suit with his most Frizz-Eased hair.

After he used the hair straighteners could he then put his hair up in a bun? So when I remove his glasses and let down his hair, I can say, "Why Mr Wachtel, you're beautiful!"

Come on, admit it. You fantasise about it too!

I know that lindsey and mick were great loves in her life I am not a new fan been a fan since I was 9 years old and I am 39 years old now so I am aware of her great loves of lindsey and Mick but here is a quote from Stevie in a recent people magazine interview May 4, 2009.

"The Great, Great Love of my life for about two years was joe walsh". "There was nothing more important than Joe Walsh, Not my music, not my songs, not anything".Stevie says. But cocaine ruined the romance."We had to break up or we though we'd die. It took me years to get over it. It's very sad, but at least we survived."

My point being that Stevie thinks everyone is her greatest love. She's either an incurable romantic or delusional.

I'm confused. How has a conversation about a musical crush turned into one about Stevie's great loves?

Back to the topic, Stevie was talking about Buffalo Springfield's song Rock And Roll Woman in the Logo Online interviews and how it inspired her in the early days. And, of course, that's a Stephen Stills song.

It's interesting. Before this year Stevie has never talked much about her influences, bar Janis, but in recent months we've seen quotes about Janis, Joni and Crosby, Stills And Nash. I can hear all of those in her early work. Maybe she's getting nostalgic in her old age.

And there are those photos she took in the late 1970s that perfectly reproduce Joni's poses on "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" (wearing the black chiffon & top hat).

And then there is the admiration for Hendrix's "Little Wing" she expressed in 1990 in Japan, as well as the '60s vocal groups like the Ronettes & the Supremes, which is probably how she decided she wanted to front her solo stage with dancing backup vocalists, all singing planned harmony arrangements.

To be fair to Stevie, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter came out in late 77 and I believe Stevie had already started wearing the top hats and black chiffon by that point, but I may be wrong. I always thought Joni's look on the cover of Hejira was very Stevie-esque, with the black outfit and the big beret. I agree the backing vocalists idea is definitely inspired by the female vocal groups of the 60s, but there's a lot of Crosby, Stills & Nash in that too I think. It's funny, along with Vivfox's Oscar Wilde thread, I don't think I ever realised how much of Stevie's act was "inspired" by other artists, writers and stars. I guess the mish-mash of influences is unique, but there's hardly any original elements in there.
