Does anyone know the approximate date of this? My guess is before Bella Donna, based on the quality of her voice. Maybe even before the so-called "blues jam demo" that's out there (supposedly from the Tusk sessions). Is this the version she talked about recording in Dallas with Gordon and Lori Perry?

I can't hear it -- I don't Torrent. Is she playing an acoustic piano or a CP30? Remember that the CP30 was only around from 1979 on, & Stevie herself only played one (like on The Dealer) if she was at the Village Recorder for Tusk, if Christine wasn't using it (it was Christine's).

It's the 18 minute version. She talks a lot (as mentioned) about the inspiration of the song and cracks a joke about what a genius she is for taping the lyrics to the candle so she can read them without having to go "upstairs" and get her glasses (Tom M sessions?). She's playing what sounds to me like regular piano and some guy is trying to figure out guitar with her. It definitely sounds like she hadn't played it much before - lots of starts and stops and talking through chord changes ("And the middle part would go C...[then] A...whatever that is...")

Mine is labeled 1980, but that could be wrong.

Mine is labeled 1980, but that could be wrong. It might be earlier. Stevie once said during a Wild Heart tour concert that she wrote it during the summer of 1978 while the band was on tour, & recorded it at Goodnight Dallas (Gordon's studio) when the band was there (which was the end of July).

The reason? Mick Fleetwood's dad (Wing Commander Fleetwood, as he was known) was just about to die of cancer.

I believe Stevie also told a version of this story in the Jim Ladd interview from 1983. So, I'm gonna guess that the "blues jam demo" was the track she recorded with Fleetwood Mac in Dallas during that tour in 1978 and that this work tape was probably made in ca. 80 with Tom Moncrieff at the studio he set up (since she talks about her glasses being "upstairs"). That leaves the vintage of the other bootleg version of Beauty and The Beast, labeled "Alternate Take" a mystery.

So, I'm gonna guess that the "blues jam demo" was the track she recorded with Fleetwood Mac in Dallas during that tour in 1978 My problem with that dating is that there's a Yamaha CP30 on that recording, & Christine didn't have that instrument at that time. She was using a Hohner Combo Pianet on that tour. She didn't get the CP30 until the Tusk sessions were well underway -- in 1979. (That's why I think that the Tusk tracks that use a Fender Rhodes -- like Brown Eyes -- are earlier than the tracks that use the Yamaha -- like Angel & Never Forget.)

The presence of this same instrument on "The Dealer" & "If You Were My Love" also helps us with an early cutoff date for those recordings.

and that this work tape was probably made in ca. 80 with Tom Moncrieff at the studio he set up (since she talks about her glasses being "upstairs"). It's as good a guess as any. I certainly have no clue. We know Tom was working with her a lot in the years preceding the release of Tusk. Maybe she & he worked a lot afterward, too, as she was preparing batches of demos to get Bella Donna started with Jimmy Iovine.
