How odd.

Stevie was supposed to sing the national anthem at the first ever Arizona Diamondbacks game back in March 1998, but she backed out a week before (much to my 16 year old self's disappointment).

I'll believe it when I see it.

According to Perez Hilton:

The Jackson family just announced the names of participants at tomorrow's memorial for Michael:

They are (in alphabetical order):

Ron Boyd (family friend); Kobe Bryant; Mariah Carey; Andrae Crouch Choir; Berry Gordy; Jennifer Hudson; Shaheen Jafargholi (finalist on Britain’s Got Talent); Magic Johnson; Martin Luther King III; Bernice A. King; John Mayer; Lionel Richie; Smokey Robinson; Rev. Al Sharpton; Brooke Shields; Pastor Lucious Smith (family friend); Usher; and Stevie Wonder.

The memorial will be broadcast on all the major networks.

I wish she were performing.

I think it would be most fitting for her to perform Landslide and Edge Of Seventeen...

To me those are probably her main signature songs from both her solo career and her Fleetwood Mac career.

It would be incredible with Landslide signifying change for so many...and with the background of Edge Of Seventeen (the death of John Lennon and so on...) I feel that Edge of Seventeen would be relevant and symbolic - the white winged doved ...the soul leaving the body.

And finally, Stevie has always been able to sing Landslide beautifully, and it's really been nicer than usual on this recent MAC tour. And if she only performed that and Edge Of Seventeen, it would probably be the best performance of it in a long time - considering she always sings it at the end of the set in her solo shows - This way she'd have lots of vocal strength.

Of course, this is just my dream.

This is the only report I have seen Stevie mentioned so I'll take it with a pinch of salt. TMZ have the confired (byt the family) line up and her name isn't included

I'm sure she'd probably do Landslide, but I think Edge is too much of a rock song for a memorial, despite some of the meaning to the song. If she were to perform I personally think Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You would be the best choice out of the songs she has performed live. I think the final lines "Poet, Priest of Nothing, Legend" would be especially fitting.

I don't think she backed out of this, I think whoever wrote that article got confused with Stevie Wonder, who is confirmed to attend.
I would be really surprised if she turned up at this, I mean, she's never professed to be a fan of his and she wasn't a friend. It would just be odd imo.

I suspect that Stevie's rendition would not have been dissimilar to Carl Lewis's rendition:

It's a pretty easy mistake to make when people are only referred to by first names: Cher, Madonna, Mariah, Beyonce . . . "Stevie." 'Little' Stevie Wonder has had 30 top ten hits, and 21 Grammy Awards. Stevie Wonder, although blind, has a special insight on what it was to perform his entire life as a singer/songwriter. Aside from Fleetwood Mac fans, "Stevie" could only mean one person in conjunction with Michael Jackson.

I don't know how in the world anyone - let alone a journalist - could confuse Stevie Nicks and Stevie Wonder... Even so, it's Michael Jackson - the way this thing has been trending, if you're a performer, it's almost a certainty that you're black.

Frankly, I'm glad she's not performing. Though she would likely sing Landslide and sell a couple thousand records, it's not her audience and he's not her type of person, in my opinion.

I guess I missed that one. I was already recording it, since I'm in and out around here, and really wanted to see it. I'm still in disbelief over the whole thing. I just saw Mariah Carey. It's got to be hard performing at this without getting emotional during the performance, and Mariah looked like she was getting there. It's hard to sing with a lump in your throat.

I dont think she;d be singing one of her songs. Since its a memorial for Michael and so far everyone's been singing a Michael song.

I cried the entire service as it all tore my heart out, and when Paris, got up at the very end and said what a wonderful Dad he was, I reeeeeeeeally lost it.. There wasn't a dry eye anywhere at that point.. He will be greatly missed for sure..

Ok, though anyone could be invited to perform, I don't think Stevie should be one of them. She was not one of his friends, and they not even shared music styles. I would think in Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, some of the USAforAfrica singers, or even Slash or Van Halen who played with him. But Stevie Nicks? Maybe there is something I didn't know, but I guess they (M&S) never shared anything, except the Clinton ceremony, though that is not enough.

I was watching the whole ceremony since 7am LA time and it was indeed an incredible beautiful quiet service throughout and from the start to the end this was the ceremony that Michael, the Jackson family and the fans deserved. I was never a Michael fan but I grew up with his music so this is a little part of my life. Well, but at the very end as Michael's little daughter Paris cried into the micro I had to leave the room crying myself because I couldn't stand it. No matter how Michael was to the public and how the public judged about him...I'm sure that he was the light for his children and I'm soo sorry for them that they've lost their daddy. This is something you can't replace.

Oh good, I am not the only one that got excited there for a moment. For a brief moment I thought it was Stevie.

I only got to see snippets of the event today as I was at work, but from what I saw, it was well done and respectful. I heard the crowd outside the center was also very good.
His music was a big part of my life growing up as a teenager in the 80's so he will be missed. There is something that makes you dance when you hear Billy Jean or Thriller just like hearing Stand Back or GDW or The Chain ... pure magic and pure talent.

I cried today and said a little prayer for Michael to rest in peace.

I too heard Paris on the radio and got a lump in my throat. No child should lose their parent that early in life. So very sad.

Lindsey was singing on the "We Are The World" in 1985, but then a lot of celebrities were too. Whenever something like this happens or when there is something big going on in the music world, everyone seems to think that Stevie will be participating in it some how. What can you do about Rumours????

I always wondered why Stevie wasn't present at the 'We Are The World' session. She was pretty big then. Maybe she was asked, and we just don't know. Then again, maybe MJ was intimidated by her because she was friends with Prince. But that doesn't hold any water though, because Sheila E was at the recording and she was definately Team Prince.

Imagine the looks of shock & dismay on the faces of Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles (well, not Ray Charles), Bette Midler, Kim Carnes, Bruce Springsteen & the others as they watched Stevie & Lindsey chase each other out the studio door & into the parking lot.

I've heard she was in fact asked but she would only do it if they could guarantee her a solo part instead of being in the background choir (like Lindsey) they could'nt guarantee that she would be singing solo so she decided not to do it.

But it's a better theory than the "Lindsey was already invited" one.

I remember a DJ read a new in the radio, back in 1985, telling Prince didn't accept to join the USA for Africa team, then he learned most of singers did, so he was kind of embarrased and contact MJ offering him a guitar solo in any of the songs of the album side b. But Michael answered No thanks, we don't need your help anymore.

Though wikipedia mentions "Michael Jackson was to be paired with Prince, but Prince was a no-show for the recording, so Jackson was paired with Diana Ross instead.", I never could confirm this story completely through a reliable source.

I tend to doubt that would be true. With that many stars in the room "swallowing their pride." I doubt La Nicks would not have, esp, considering the honor of being there, etc. She likely was doing something else or was unable to attend for other reasons if she was asked at all.

We had a big thread about this several years ago that went into the timeline. Maybe someone can post a link to it.

Who was it that wrote the Jackson tell-all, years ago? Albert Goldman? Andrew Morton? Whoever it was, there was a page or two detailing a meeting of MJ and Prince. Prince arrived and sat at one end of the table, MJ was at the other end, and neither one would speak. Prince was enigmatic back then, I could totally picture him frozen like a statue, piercing people with his eyes. So I don't think the pair were exactly friends at all, so that made me come up with my Stevie 'We Are The World' hypothesis.

Here's another theory I just made-up: Stevie was honking loads of coke back then, maybe MJ, Lionel Ritchie, etc who were arranging the session didn't want her there because they wouldn't know what condition she'd be in? Back then, MJ was big into healthy living, no meat, no alcohol, still practicing Jehovah Witness's, etc. Maybe Stevie was too scary for him. Too rock and roll sexy scary.
