Vibe, one of the nation’s leading popular music magazines, is closing immediately, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Word was broken early this afternoon by the Web site dailyfinance.com and spread to other music and media news sites. The spokeswoman, Tracy Nguyen, said the Vibe staff would be formally notified in a meeting at 2 p.m. She said she did not know how many people would be laid off as a result of the closure.
The closure of Vibe leaves just two large-circulation music magazines, XXL and The Source, focusing on hip-hop and R&B. The Source has had its own troubles, going through a bankruptcy and emerging under new ownership last year. A rock-focused magazine, Blender, folded last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rolling Stone itself went belly up in bankruptcy before long.
Magazines were doing poorly even before the recession. Kids get all their coverage of their beloved music idols from the Internet these days, & Rolling Stone political writing hasn't managed to make its mark on the landscape in the last few decades -- I think its political stories were more touted & read in the '70s.

Most of these mags are vehicles for advertising and promotion and companies have cut their ad budgets and even suddenly reneged on reserved space in some cases. I've never paid for any of them out of principle and because people give me their used back copies (sometimes with CD sometimes not). R&B seemed a lot more happening a few years ago and has mostly gone into a big gloop of formula lately like rap often has (aimed at suburban white kids with money like Eminem or whatever). There was some great stuff coming out for awhile that wasn't a formula, now I'm just burnt out by too many second-rate knock offs.

People give me their used magazines all the time. I don't care how old they are, I still enjoy reading them.
I'm never burnt out on hearing new rap and hip hop music. It keeps me feeling youthful and current.

It was $10.00 for a year. I got one issue. They went out of business. They keep the nine.

Oh! Got it. Sorry, missed that. Hmm. Bummer. Well maybe you can protest by lighting the one mag you got on fire outside their offices.

So they closed up shop and sent everyone home with pink slips that day, eh?

They did. Be careful whose doom you wish for, for someday you might be sent home with nothing but a kiwi to console you. I'm talkin' 'bout the fruit, not the bird.

You might get something back. You're a creditor and may get a partial refund.
