Would any of you like to trade your Ipod for a Sony walkman.

I still have my Walkmans,I still have all my worn out StevieNicks/FM cassettes to play.
I remember the Walkmans. I thought how cool is this you could actually listen to music while jogging. Before this you had to carry around a big "boom" box. Remember those?

I remember boom boxes. I was pretty young though. There was a guy who would walk down our street everyday with that thing.

I remember headphones with a built in radio which was before the walkman. I still don't have an ipod (or clone), I do have a CD Walkman I can put a disc of a couple hundred mp3s in and that's almost as good.

I owned a Sony walkman, that lasted me throughout high school (I wore it in classes 70% of the time) and college/tech school (Where I wore it 99.999999% of the time). I wished I could find some thing of a similar quality because "it took a lickin' and kept on tickin' "
Ipod? Never will own one...They dont make 'em large enough to hold my music collection.

That's nice, but did anyone say you needed to carry your entire music collection along with you portably?

I was going to say! Also, did the walkman hold all your music collection? The ipod is great for me but it definitely doesn't carry all my music, I wouldn't need that.

It's funny because for the past few months I've been wishing I still owned a walkman. I want some good quality player to play all my cassettes. I'm terrified to buy any type of used tape recorder 'cause you know what will happen, don't cha?
They'll get chewed up!

my mom loves hers tho, she uses it at her desk daily~

What a trip down memory lane...wish I'd held onto 1-2 of my old ones. I remember how cool the walkman was--it was a 'must have' to say the least. How great it was to walk round in headphones and ignore the parents, or at least let them think they were being ignored.
Love the ipod though---so much better than lugging those tapes/discs around.

So much better sound quality to.
I think if your not happy with the amount of space you can get on an ipod then it's not the ipod that's the problem! I have more than the space on mine. My boyfriend reviews music and we have every possible artist on cd given for free, there's too many that we can't store them, but who would honestly want to carry that much? It's like its cool to say you don't like ipods to be different from most people.

Yeah, we were really "modern" then. To think you could walk around with head phones not plugged into anything. Cell phones and iPods were beyond imagination. Even the PC was primitive..no hard drive.

I will probably upgrade to an ipod at some point, but the CD Walkman can plug into car radios and other things so I wouldn't hand it over either. A little volume stick thing with a screen tells you the song and artist etc. I got this second or maybe even third-hand and it's worked great for six years now. Maybe I'm more of an album oriented person though.

I was always fascinated by the old fashioned ways of listening to music. I remember when I was a child I spent hours in front of our record player just looking how the needle went over the grooves allthough cd players were already everywhere. One day my father gave his old walkman to me and that was the greatest present I ever got from anyone. I have it still (:blob2:) and I prefer it to any ipod.

But your Sony Walkman didn't hold your entire music collection either and still you used it, right?
I have a 160gb and it's completely full, I now have to take off stuff to put new music on but I completely love it, it's enabled me to listen to far more music than I used to. There are so many older albums I've rediscovered through it.

I can't stand things in my ears either and like you I want to know if someone is approaching or not but I didn't like hanging the headphones around my neck cause it made me feel like I was wearing a dog collar.

10,000 PHYSICAL cd's (When I feel like counting 'em)...Not into mp3 files saved on a hardrive.

Did I say "I say I wanted to carry my whole collection around"? No, didnt recall that I did. Once again you assume WAY too much there fella...My mood in music changes from day to day (As does with many people), so why have an Ipod when I may not have the music I want to hear on a specific day loaded onto it.

How was it wrong to assume that as long as they don't make iPods "large enough" for your whole collection, you wouldn't want a portable storage device/player? Help me out here.
One of the great features of the iPod & iTunes (and all MP3 players, for that matter) is the ability to create playlists. While you may not be able to forecast what you'll want to hear two weeks from now, you'd still have the ability to make as many playlists/mixes as you want, categorized however you want. They may not be the exact songs you'd want to hear on any given day- but, given the benefits of having a portable player, is that not a fair tradeoff?

I apologize for my earlier comments...
I have several reasons for not wanting an Ipod.
Recently, my older bro bought his daughter (My 16 year old niece Kendra) one of the new Ipod's (Don't remember which one, but one of the higher end/large GB models). He has had nothing but issues with it (ie- unable to upload music due to "Technical errors").
It was such a joke that he had to return it and purchase her a smaller sized Ipod. The dealer he purchased it from stated "That some of the newer Ipod's have had major QUALITY issues that the former and older Ipod's did not have".
So #1 is from a QUALITY stance (Q.C. was my major in college - and I am forever a stickler for Quality, not disatisfaction from bad Quality...Off topic, but I still laugh that the Japanese make such top-notch quality electronics using QC processes that the US taught them back in the 1920's, but American companies couldnt make a toaster to save their asses). It is really sad that I had to help my older brother figure out HOW to work an Ipod when I don't see myself owning one anytime soon.
As a person from an older generation (I'll be the big 4-0 next year), I have never been into listening to a couple of songs on a playlist from one artist then skip around (Or is that "Shuffle" around) to another and so on and so on.
I am a strictly ALBUM person, I listen from start to finish any album I play...Never just one track. I can see an Ipod being beneficial to those who do adhere to the "Shuffle" around of artists and songs, but for me I really don't see a need for one if I am driving (I have a 6 disc Bose factory disc changer in my ve-HICK-le), If I am shopping, nor do I see the need to have one when I am at home.
I am also a person who prefers the physical ALBUM in their hands, instead of a file. I enjoy looking at album artwork in my hands instead straining my eyes to look at artwork of the lil' iPod screen.
I have been collecting music for over 25 years now, and I still have the most joy when I find a physical disc/tape/vinyl release than I would have I found the same release on iTunes (Believe me, I have seen albums I have hunted for on mp3 format, but the quality is ALWAYS 192kbs, which sucks ass...At least FLAC provides the BEST quality since it is "Lossless", Btw, "Apple Lossless" format is truly not "lossless".)
Nothing against ANYONE who owns an iPod, it just doesnt seem logical to a music junkie like me is all.
Afterthought:
Something my older brother and I talked about recently is why do people save music files onto their PC hard-drives, then when they have a PC related problem and lose their files, why did they not burn the files onto a disc (DVD/CDR) just in case of such a 'disaster'?
Same goes for electronic devices (iPod/mp3 players) because they have a life expectancy of only 5 years, what then if you lose all your files and you did not backup the files? You have to repurchase the files? Another reason why I stick with the physical disc over the file.

I think when people talk about ipods they refer to all the mp3 players on the market. it's just the easier than listing all the brands. There are heaps of other brand options if you don't like ipod itself.
I didn't get the big deal with ipods until I started catching public transport to university and compared to those old walkmans its like a fantasy machine. You create playlists for different styles or moods or can just go straight to all your collection of one artist. Heaps of options and as I said I too have far too much music but if the space on the ipod isn't enough then that's kind of petty. I mean is it really not good enough that you can't carry every song ever released? And also I don't get how that makes you love the old walkmans more cause they carried less than 1% of what ipods can.

Probably why I dont have a Ipod yet.becuase I have friends with them and all theirs deid with their collection held hostage in their dead Ipod,I have and had several clones I been using since 1999.I still have my first player which is a Diamond Rio 300, with a whopping 32mb memory .no typo.BTW yes ,Boomboxes,I still have my 3ton JVC boombox ,I picked up in the summer of 1982.I do remember first recording FM's Hold Me on cassette and Stevie Nicks off the radio with it.

Same for me--the London commute to work finally inspired me to buy an ipod. I'm in the US now and travel a lot for business--the ipod is handy for airport stress, hotel boredom, etc.
I do back-up all of my music-usually twice. I burn any downloads to disc, back-up my hard drive and itunes on an external drive, etc. My previous MP3 player (not an ipod) died after a year and I've been through a few PC / laptop crashings/deaths. Learnt a few lessons the hard way...
